    This video features LTEX, CSX, I&M, AMT, KRM, NYC, DME, BNSF, CEI CO, GECX, USMX, MEC, VRE, UP, NS, and more! I took the photos with both my canon vixa hf r800 (used for zoomed shots this day) and my iPhone 8 (used for closer pics and videos this day). Enjoy!

    Just like humankind, mechanical things have finite lives. I know that cognitively but nonetheless it breaks my heart to see row upon row of locomotives that have ‘died’. I could never work at such places as I’d be in tears half the day doing what needed to be done to the once-vibrant machines. A boxcar….meh! A locomotive, however, has ‘personhood’, something to be revered and respected.
    Emotional thoughts aside…this video was an awesome collection of locomotives I have never laid eyes on before and for that sir, I’m most grateful.

    1:15. Those Genset switchers didn't have a very long life. I wonder how many of these locomotives will have a second life with class two roads or return to the rails as leasers.

    • @galaxyrailfanning7860
      @galaxyrailfanning7860  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      epistte- Ah ok. That’s explains why they’re there at LTEX then lol. Last time I went I actually didn’t see many of them at all so I think most have them have actually been scrapped. Too bad NRE is basically going out of business... maybe they would’ve improved on future models. Eventually I’m sure someone else will start making some more gensets, hopefully they last longer next time!

    • @epistte
      @epistte 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galaxyrailfanning7860 The gensets need some sort of battery or a bank of supercaps, so the operators aren't stuck waiting for the second or 3rd Genset to fire up under additional load when they asked for more power and it wasn't there. Genset switchers are a good idea but it wasn't properly developed and executed. It's sad to see so many once-proud locomotives waiting on the deadline to be torch bait. The Wheeling and Lake Erie seems to like older SD40s and it wouldn't surprise me if they picked up a few of these retired SD50/60s to be rebuilt as a backdated SD-40

      I disagree, these units have paved the way for new technology and enhanced safety features. These units have had good lives and their parts will certainly be used in newer locomotives. The cost to scrap them is a lot less than to keep them running. And trust me, if you worked for the railways, those old -8’s are death traps. (CN has a huge number of second hand units they bought for BNSF and UP, 3/4’s of them don’t have working emergency brakes or RSC).
      There’s no point in spending millions of dollars in trying to keep a 30, 40 year old unit in safe operating condition when it’s cheaper to buy a brand new ET44AC’s with enhanced safety and crew protection. Plus the crews will certainly thank you for giving them air conditioning
      While it is sad, they have done their duty and they’ve earned their rest.

    • @Maine_Railfan

      It wasnt due to PTC that the older GE's were phased out, they were older and were at a age that they started to have more and more mechanical issues. Marco393 brings up a good point about how unsafe they are, and that's why they are being phased out, or rebuilt. Pan Am has a good deal of exCSX C40-8's and they have installed PTC on them, so that is not a issue.

      Railroading Fan- Thanks! You have my permission to use it this time but you have to give me FULL credit for whatever parts you use.

    EVEN THE GECX'S ARE GETTING SCRAPPED?!?!?!??!?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?!?!

    • @galaxyrailfanning7860
      @galaxyrailfanning7860  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Trainz Kid- I’m not sure if all of them will be scrapped. Some are still on lease to CN, some are probably here for storage, and some may be here for maintenance. I could be wrong about some of these things but I doubt they would scrap a lot of them.

      A good deal of the exUP C40-8's are, they are in rough shape, and if I recall are being used as parts sources.
