THANKS SO MUCH for creating this carburetor cleaning tutorial! My mower started surging real bad after running out of gas during operation (I presume some dirt found its way into the carb) and I was stumped. I looked at other videos and they appeared complex. Your video had my EXACT engine and explained everything perfectly, and my mower's back in top shape. Thank you! No more surging! You are a STAR!!!
I bought my mower several years ago. It has always been a bit of a s*d! I've had it back to the dealer but that made little difference. I knew it was a fuel problem with lumpy running and being difficult to start and almost impossible to restart when hot. I followed this video and cleaned the carburettor and replaced the gasket and diaphragm. It's a different machine now. It starts easily whether hot or cold, runs well and tackles long grass with ease. If only I had done this years ago. Thanks for your easy to understand video.
Thanks. Could not have fixed my mower without the likes of you. I watched a load of TH-cam videos on these carbs 'running too rich', 'lumpy throttle control', sooting up spark plug, 'fuel leaking', 'not sucking up fuel unless tank more than half full', 'primer bulb not sucking fuel' etc. My mower was doing all of these things. I started off cleaning the carb with carb spray and changing the diaphragm and gasket for a non genuine version off ebay. This may have made it a little worse. Making a sandwich with the diaphragm between two gaskets made minimal difference. The problem was these plastic carbs are prone to distorting with heat and time making the surface that contacts the gasket uneven. I tried flattening it a bit with a sharpening stone and that did not help. Finally using the carburettor replacement fixed all the problems. If your carburettor is distorted get a Briggs and Stratton genuine replacement. They are not expensive
Quite a few years ago a good mate of mine found one of these in someones street side hard rubbish and gave it to me mainly because I kept nicking his! No idea how old it is. Another old mate serviced it and got it running. Since then, we’ve move to a bigger property. Recently it started to run a bit rough and stalling but I’m too sentimental to replace it! Thanks to your videos I’ve had a crack at servicing it myself and it is now running like a dream and better than when I first got it! Quite easy when you’ve got clear instructions! Thanks! Still plenty of years left in the old girl!
This is EXACTLY what I needed! My little Briggs and Stratton push mower is running beautifully now, and I know NOTHING about small engine maintenance (but now want to learn more...)

Thank you, helped me tremendously. I'm 27 female and helped my mama with her mower
excellent video.. 5 STARS I stumbled across your video looking to service a mower i bought off ebay. The oil dipstick screw wouldnt turn and the whle thing came out! (fixing screws were missing) managed to twist cap open, lubricated it a bit, put it back in and put 2 replacement screws (finally my collection of odd screws has come in handy) so the dipstick unit is now fixed and cap can now be turned and oil checked. quiet proud of my self! I hate DIY because something always goes wrong!! I even managed to clean the Air filter!! so now feeling confident I searched youtube and came across your video, and now after watchng it i feel confident enough to tackle a simple service !! (at this rate i'm going to put my local lawnmower repair shop out of business!!!) cheers mate
Many thanks for your time and effort of this. most helpful. The only thing is when reinstalling the tank/carb to the mower, the O ring and its keeper seat into carb inlet.
From Mark. I enjoyed watching your video with the diaphragm and carburetor gasket replacement. At this time, I have my sister’s mower at my place for the exact same repair. The B&S engine (10T802) runs great for about 2 years and will promptly blow another gasket. I tried another carburetor and there was no change in the end result. Now I purchase the carburetor parts in bulk for my sisters mower and a Series 300 B&S engine that I have. Best Regards From KY. Cheers.
Youve given me the confidence to service my lawn mower. Never done engines before. Ill get the parts needed including new primer bulb, governor spring that's broken and carb diaphragm plus cleaner. Then for the tricky bit...
This is my first time at doing anything mechanical. As a result of watching your video a few times (3) I got a kit, cleaned the fuel tank (old fuel was syrup) cleaned carbi, new gasket new plug chnaged oil.......started first pull. woohoo. now onto the whipper snipper.
Thank you for this excellent video for both cleaning up the carburetor and replacing the gaskets to fit it back onto the fuel tank. Not only are your instructions clear but you have a nice delivery that instills confidence that it will work. The result for me today was exactly that. The 4.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine runs without surging anymore and my wife will probably stop expecting me to fix that hand lawn mower she brought back from the garage sale.
Thank you for this video. I have same briggs and Stratton engine in my Mountfield empress 16 and had changed the carburettor gaskets but broke my leg and shattered knee cap so had a delay finishing the project and when I came back to finish up for the life of me I couldn't remember which way the springs went back on. Really should have taken a picture but didn't anticipate starting the job one spring and having to finish it the next one lol. You're a star. Thanks again.
Awesome video. The instruction work for me on the first shot. Easy to understand and to do after watching this video. Just be very careful with plier to remove springs. Take pictures before disasembly. Thank you! You saved me 125$ the repair guy wants labour and parts.
From Chicago IL. Million thanks for this excellent presentation. I have an older Jacobsen mower that looks very much like the mower you have described.
My apologies that I haven’t replied to any comments after making these videos I lost my log in details but thx. You all for your great comments love and peace david 😃👍👍👍
Ohmigosh!!! I just found out that for years I've been a "go faster air filter" guy!! Oops! :-) Well filmed, nicely and patiently demonstrated and explained. Very enjoyable. Thanks!
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Aydin Ira thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I usually brush off the top of the tank and around the carburetor to make sure nothing falls in it. So it's easier to clean and maintain before putting the thing back together with new parts.
The best "how to.." video I've watched ever..and I'v seen plenty. Very well presented, visuals are excellent, knowledgeable and no mindless chatter in between. Very helpful. Subscribed and thank you!
Hopefully you still monitor these comments - I just cleaned my air filter and I can't get the long crew to "bite" into anything. Where does that long screw thread into? It's driving me crazy, it should be dead simple! Thanks for your help if you see this! FOLLOW UP NOTE - after asking about where the long air cleaner screw needs to thread I figured it out - I removed the tank and carb assembly from the mower, then took the carb off from the tank and looked at where the long screw should thread into. It turns out that the hole was full of dirt (not sure how it got in there) so I cleaned it out with a narrow pick which took a while to get all of the dirt out until the screw threaded in enough. I tested it as I went with the carb off. Once the screw threaded in enough I put everything back together and onto the mower - the long screw seated fine and holds the air cleaner cover in place securely now.
🥳🥳🥳 Watched the video one time, and cleaned the carburetor. 💪 When you said in the video, that you only need a descent socket set (or at least a socket set), I was like... Yeah that's already fixed then. Just got the best gift from my boyfriend, the biggest Barco socket set, he could find. 🥳😁 But anyway. First time ever, I played with lawnmower engine stuff, and you explained it very well, and our mover now works perfectly. I'm so proud. 🥳😎💪💖 Girls just wanna have fun. (and one thing... Why do you have Copenhagen 62 on your shirt? 😁 Yeah, I'm Danish...)
Great vid . A couple of things to note, the o ring on the carb should be fitted to the carb and clipped in place before it is put back on the mower. Also, if you put the black sump breather pipe on the carb before putting it back on the mower, it makes life easier.
Thanks my Briggs & Straton started lsosing power after a few minutes of use. I changed the oil, bought a new spark plug and cleaned the air filter but that did not help! Alas I now know how to clean my own carburetor since I suspect that's where the problem exists.
I really enjoyed watching your video especially your two Assistant/Inspectors ! I always clean and blow everything off with air gun "before" I take everything apart. That way all that dirt doesn't get in the carb or engine etc. (that's just how I am- it bothers some people) Also so much easier to work on from that point.
Just a couple of tips, I only ever use warm water and soap to wash out the air filters. And to get a proper seal take the o ring and retainer and insert them in your carburettor before putting it back on the mower.
Thank you for this video. I'm near the middle of this project now using this video. I don't much care for working with gloves on, on certain things. I like to be able to feel what I'm doing hence I end up with filthy hands! God made me "wash and wear", I'd suppose they'll clean. :-)
I have other small engine equipment like honda, etc. But briggs and Stratton has always been the problem starting. I put fuel additives, fresh gasoline with stabilizer and run it regularly and still a pain!
Thank you for the excellent video. I have successfully followed your instructions to service my Mountfield SP470. One problem I still have is that the primer bulb gets sucked in after about 5 mins of running and the engine cuts out. If I pull the bulb back out and prime again, the engine starts and runs again for another 5 mins before repeating the cut out. any ideas what the problem could be? I have tried loosening the fuel cap in case that is the problem but that doesn't help.
Hello congratulations for the video that taught me a lot. But I noticed that in my opinion there is an error when you mount the carburettor with a free oring seal on the intake pipe !! I believe this must be mounted first on the carburetor with the ring of pastica that blocks it and only after inserting it in the intake pipe !! Otherwise this would not fit well by not closing and allowing the engine to suck in outside air. I specify that it is not a new controversy and only to avoid this error to others and forgive me for the translation made with Google translator. Greetings from Italy
Great video mate. You made everything pretty simple to understand. I love Briggs Stratton mower and generator great and reliable. Just cleaned out my generator carb today hopefully tomorrow it will start with no issues.
Great video mate and thanks. What size are the 2 sockets you used to take the carb off the mower? Also, can you tell me what size of spanner I will need to remove the blade? Thanks.
My filter screw does NOT tighten down any more. Vibrates loose so filter wobbles and is not efficient. Is it missing something? Does it fit/screw into a gromet because the screw treads are NOT damaged but just looking into the cup the screw doesn't catch any corresponding threads to seat & hold screw in place.. Do I put some loctite goop in the hole a create new threads?
Great video. Really enjoyed it. I have a problem with my B & St mower. It starts really well but wont stop. Would you provide a video on the causes of non stopping. Cheers. Norm
Very grateful for you sharing your knowledge. Mower runs a min or 2 & dies, primer bulb sucked in. New parts, reworked, now leaking petro. Could it be the gasket or o ring not sitting right ? I'm hoping. Gonna redo it tmrw.
Hi, great video, and like you said, being cack handed and making mistakes comes with doing something that I'd never done before . Eventually, I got the job done, but the reving up and down is still present. I've also changed the governor springs too. I can't understand what I've done wrong? Could you help out?

me too.
Well done, thank you very much! Note: If the primmer bulb has crack or pinhole it will pull air and cause mower to run lean. Worth checking.
I have never worked on this type of carb, thank you so much for showing the step by step!!
What kind of carb is that eh! No bowl (gas tank is the bowl), no float you can see, no pin, no jets... weird ass thing, built into the gas tank... lol
You just saved my day, old but gold video. Thanks champ

I'll replace my floppy diaphragm and give the carby a clean. Thanks for the video.
VERY NICELY PRESENTED and your JOLLY personality does the rest
Many thanks David. Carried out this procedure this morning and mower started first time. Excellent tutorial.

Finally a video with my exact type mower. Thanks!
my track record fixing lawn mowers is not good, however i did what you said and it works thanks
Perfect, thx for the video. I also had a flabby diaphragm :)

Thank You for taking the time to show which holes the springs /linkage go into. I did take pics but they were too blurred.
Thanks for the video dude. Helped me get the old machine going 👍
Outstanding video. Thank you for such a good presentation.
Onya mate! Gave me confidence to take off the carby/tank, give it a scrub and get me mower goin again.

Thanks for this through demonstration, we'll explained video.

Yes we do love our fingers. Great video.
Great video 👍
None of the bullshit chat that certain other mower channels spew out for 45 minutes to do a 15 minute job 😉
Great Video , Love your relaxed style of working .
Thank you, I have seen your carburetor repair process. Please broadcast how to change the rotating knife and start rope , spring. Here is South Korea.
Thanks for the great video, very helpful!
Great video, very helpful I now have a clean carb with a new gasket and diaphragm.
Thank you very much. Great instructions.
Thanks for your vid. It was very instructional.

You are correct.
Great video mate. You made everything pretty simple to understand. I love Briggs Stratton mower and generator great and reliable. Just cleaned out my generator carb today hopefully tomorrow it will start with no issues.
THANKS FOR THE GREAT & clear VIDEO. I WAS ABLE TO SEE WHERE A LOOSE SPRING NEEDED TO GO AND MY MACHINE WORKED GREAT AFTER.
G'day Mate enjoyed your tutorial; your instructions were clear and easy to follow many thanks
Great video. Really helpful. Mines in bits just waiting for parts to arrive. I’m hoping it will fire right up when it’s back together.
Lovely little dogs!
Great video mate and thanks. What size are the 2 sockets you used to take the carb off the mower?
Also, can you tell me what size of spanner I will need to remove the blade?
Thanks.
Great job on this. I need to clean mine and this explains it pretty good.
Great video..
My qualcast and mountfield are misfiring, popping every now and then.
Could it be the carb needs cleaning out ?
Nice one geezer. This video helped me to repair a Briggs and Stratton sprint 40 lawnmower. Happy daze.
Great video. Really enjoyed it. I have a problem with my B & St mower. It starts really well but wont stop. Would you provide a video on the causes of non stopping. Cheers. Norm
Throttle spring probably
Very grateful for you sharing your knowledge. Mower runs a min or 2 & dies, primer bulb sucked in. New parts, reworked, now leaking petro. Could it be the gasket or o ring not sitting right ? I'm hoping. Gonna redo it tmrw.
what would make my mower rev up and down on normal cutting would it be the diaphragm
Hi, great video, and like you said, being cack handed and making mistakes comes with doing something that I'd never done before . Eventually, I got the job done, but the reving up and down is still present. I've also changed the governor springs too. I can't understand what I've done wrong? Could you help out?
Awesome vid hopefully it’s gets me going again
My man thanks 4 da help your ok for a gezza
Great video.
I shows how far we’ve evolved when we play with highly combustible fluid and sparks while surrounded by wooden buildings.
I take the carb off and apart and use a garden hose to clean out all the ports and tank. Clean the diaphragm and gasket and rub a little oil on them. Blow dry with a hair dryer. Reassemble and cut some grass. Works every time unless the diaphragm is to far gone.
Good video. The only thing I noticed is you didn't oil your filter???
Very good video! Thanks for your useful explanations.
Your little dogs are 🐕🐕🔝🤗 adorable!
Best wishes, man!
El mejor vídeo the best video
This is the only video that gets out the intake tube of fuel to clean it.
So I guess the intake tube just snaps back in?lol never mind
He just pushed the tube in until it clicked lol ok
This was great help, thanks mate
Great ! thanks for information, have an Briggs almost the same model...the body is different but the carburator is the same...
Is there an alternative to carbon spray I can use using household items?
10:13 is the order the diaphragm goes in if you’re here for that like me, good video
Thankyou so much. That was really good and keep you mishaps. Exelliant video
Helped me a bunch. Thanks
Thanks for the video, I'm going to do the same thing to my Briggs and Stratton this evening. She starts, but not running smoothly.
Mine is a Rover mower with the Briggs engine.....when I watched this video I noticed that the diaphragm on yours doesn't have the pump linkage to a butterfly flapper in the intake tube that mine has.....maybe mine is an old model ..........I got it in the early 90's, still running.....your carb is a much simpler model than the 6 screw carb model that mine has.......mine also doesn't have the primer bulb for easy starting.
