This video was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and it's permanently displayed there as a piece of video art. It was the first music video to be acquired as a piece or art in a museum. The song talks about leaving the conscious world and entering the unconsciousness into an altered state of mind. The video recreates several paintings by surrealist painters Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. It also contains elements from Jungian psychology such as the representation of the collective unconscious and archetypes. So the whole thing is a journey into the unconscious world, the world of dreams and visions. The spinning dancers are called dervishes. In sufism (the mystical side of Islam) they say that when the dervishes twirl they get unconscious and they become one with God. It also recreates specific scenes from surrealist movie "The color of pomegranates" and from "Hellraiser", that is about a puzzle box that opens the doors to another state of perception beyond the human limits of experience.
Madonna is a very visual artist! She used the music videos as a medium to push her art even further during the early MTV faze! Her videos are ICONIC and set the standard for what everyone else does nowadays. You really have to watch her videos!!!! Along with Michael Jackson, Madonna is an artist you can’t miss her videography, because it’s that important!
You chose the BEST video to start video reactions....not only Madonna's best music video ever, but one of the best ever made, a work of art, and was or still is in the Museum of Modern Art or something, as a permanent display. Madonna is a visual artist too. Cute doggie btw!!!!!
Most Madonna video’s have a (hidden) meaning. From the early 80s till now. There is so much more to unravel if you gave Madonna’s Music video’s a change. You will be surprised! If there is one artist you want to discover by video’s it has to be Madonna. There is no one like her 👑
This video is one of my all-time fave Madonna vids (she has so many good ones!) This one was inspired on surrealist art by artists like Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst. Google some of their work so you can understand/appreciate this video even more :)
madonna's interest in the arts - particularly classic hollywood and art house films, photography, dance, painting, and religious iconography - shows up in her own work as homages and sources of artistic expression. you can see this throughout her oeuvre, as when she invoked marilyn monroe to critique reagan-era self-absorption ("material girl"), the paintings of tamara de lempicka ("open your heart," "vogue"), or the contentiousness of a black jesus and burning crosses ("like a prayer"). this may, in part, derive from her close friendships with basquiat, keith haring, and other artists, who all inhabited the same creative communities in the early 1980s. i understand that, today, she is known in the art world as a major collector with exquisite taste. this video seems to explore the realm of the unconscious by drawing from the great surrealists who fixated on similar themes. taken chronologically, this may have set the stage for her venture into mysticism and eastern philosophies, the "ray of light" era.
Oh wow Sal! I love seeing and hearing your reactions to these Madonna records, tours and videos. Bedtime Stories was my first Madonna record. I was 13, and I wish I could be you, seeing all of this for the first time. For me, there are 3 tiers to appreciating Madonna’s art - hearing the songs first, watching the music videos second, and then experiencing them live within the story arc of her shows. Each layer adds meaning and context. The 90s was a golden era for music videos, and both Madonna and Michael Jackson really defined and elevated the medium as a true art form. Further to other people’s comments I would definitely recommend watching American Life, Express Yourself, Justify My Love, Bad Girl, Rain, Take a bow, You’ll see, Frozen and Nothing Really Matters. They’re all absolutely beautiful, and the more recent videos for Ghosttown and God Control are also really worth watching. Madonna is incomparable.
Just found out the clip yesterday as well and I had the same of your face’s reactions 😁 It was a collab with Björk and this is the most expensive clip ever made (USD 5m)
This is def a case where the video takes the song to another level. Groundbreaking at the time and just reminds me of dreams I don’t understand. Thanks for reacting 👏👏
Thank you for this reaction! You could also react to Madonna's "Bedtime Story" live performance at the 1995 Brit Awards (the only time she's ever performed this song live) if you want. Interestingly she did not sing the original version of the song, she used a really cool dance remix instead (you would probably enjoy that version more than the album one by the way!)
You can find Madonna is a real intellectual person, the images contained on this vid, are about her favorite writers work such as Kundera, Pablo Neruda and her favorite surrealist paintors like Salvador Dalih, Frida Kahlo and Mercedes Varo... Just amazing...
Occultism in Bedtime Story video by Madonna 1º At the beginning of clip, we can see 'The All Seeing Eye", the highest symbol of the Illuminattis. This eye welcomes Madonna, by displaying a 'welcome' notice as we see a Madonna going through a sort of trance and heading for a state of 'unconsciousness'. This video refers to a 'cosmic journey' or 'astral travel' which Madonna experiences, in which 'words are useless' and this journey can only be done by means of the mind. 2º Below this notice, we can see the legend "Ciconne, M.", which may mean Ciconne is masonic or "Ciconne, Madonna". 3º The blue liquid running down a crystal tube represents the 'blue blood' or 'cold blood' from the Masons, which finally makes her wake or become 'lucid'. This situation reveals that Madonna is mentally controlled by her Mason Masters, who decide when she must be lucid and when she must not. 4º Madonna is seen singing with a sunflower behind her. This represents the symbol of the Sun, which is usually cult object in Secret Societies and old pagan religions. It is well known that The Sun has been worshiped for thousand years as a pagan god by numerous old civilizations e.g. The Celts, The Egyptians etc. 5º The levitating cube, in another scene, with black and white faces of Madonna is related to the cult to Saturn and Adoration to Satan, then. 6º The animals' skulls floating on a water tank beside a naked Madonna are the highest symbols of the dark elites. This scene may describe the destruction of animals and the ecosystem, since the images suggest that the animales are dead. 7º The doves which come out from a pregnant Madonna are related to 'peace' so this scene may suggest that Madonna will give birth to a Messiah who will bring 'peace' to humanity. Besides, this situation may make fun of 'The Holy Spirit'. 8º The two mirror-headed Madonnas , seated one in front of the other, try to unveil Madonna's multiple personalities, after being exposed to an MK-ultra mental control. 9º Madonna, levitating along a corridor, displays the fact that she has been lifted to a higher level of a Dark Priestess, where she lies above the rest of the Illuminati puppets, represented by the 3 boys who look at her in admiration as she passes flying by. 10º In the minute 3:22, we can see Baphomet represented by a sort of brown glasses with the form of goat which a woman uses to cover her face. This odd glasses seems to represent Baphomet's head. 11º The woman looking up to the sky represents a 'fallen angel' since she is showed with scars on her back where evidently there were wings as well as 'goat legs' instead of human legs. 12º The foot treading on a bunch of grapes on an Arabic scripture may suggest the way wine is made but it may also mean "stepping on 'Jesus Christ's Blood'". 13º In the minute 3:33, which constitutes the masonic number by excellence, Madonna sticks out her tongue at the time when a flashing light comes out from her forehead, showing the opening of her third eye. This means that she receives secrets and gifts from 'the dark magic' as a result of her worshiping her reptilians entities. She opens her mind to the 'Dark Magic'. 14º Madonna falling to an empty space full of stars gives us the idea that 'once she signs the pact with the dark elite, there is no turning back': She has given away her soul to the Devil. 15º Madonna sleeping on a human skeleton, which is watching over her very attentively, means that now Madonna is embraced by The Death itself and that Madonna becomes a living dead: she has no longer a soul so as to become a puppet, losing her consciousness and becoming 'unconscious'. 16º In the minute 4:03, Madonna's face displays lips where normally the eyes should be and an eye where normally a mouth should be. This scene unveils the fact that The Illuminatis will control what she might sing and say as an artist. That is why she sings 'Today is the last day that I'm using words...They are gone now....Lost their meaning....Don't function anymore...." 17º At the end of this video, the 'thank you' notice gives thanks to Madonna for having signed the pact and given away her soul to the Devil. This means that Madonna will give service to 'it' until the end of her living days. 18º 'Bedtime Story' seems to be the last song that Madonna has sung before giving her soul and agreeing to be lifted to the grade of Dark Priestess.
Madonna Ray of Light music video, Madonna’s Frozen video. Most of Madonnas videos from Album Ray of Light are works of Art. Then again all her music videos are memorable.
Music videos are the visual artistic expression of the song. I’m surprised that you are admittedly not a music video fan, judging by your posters in the background I would had guessed that image was important to you. Perhaps it’s a generational thing. Madonna got where she is primarily because of her music videos, and to an equal extent her live performances.
By the increadible Mark Romanek! En Vogue - Free Your Mind, Michael & Janet - Scream, Janet - Got ’Till It’s Gone, Madonna - Rain, Jay-Z - 99 Problems, Johnny Cash - Hurt are a few of his other videos.
That song was written by Björk for Madonna, somewhat forced to do it but it is a work of art. I recommend Björk's work is pure art, starting from Debut. 👍🏻👏🏻
This era makes me think, that, before Madonna was a Kabbalist, she mostly delved into Alchemy (the most obvious sign of this is on Sanctuary). There are a lot of Alchemical symbols during this era, one of them being the sun and the moon. Not to say a Kabbalist can't also be an Alchemist, but I think she singularly dived into this before finding that later. A stage in Alchemy, from what I remember, is decay before you have a rebirth (Ray Of Light). Another song talks about death on there as well (Mer Girl), but on Bedtime Stories, Sanctuary seems to fit that requirement. She buries that older part of herself in order to be reborn. Nigredo, or blackness, means putrefaction or decomposition. In analytical psychology, the term became a metaphor for the 'dark night of the soul, when an individual confronts the shadow within'. It would only make sense for the album to pave the way for Ray Of Light. It was her first step on this personal journey through the other steps, albedo (bringing light and clarity to the prima materia "personal material"), citrinitas (yellowing of the lunar consciousness), and rubedo (signaling great success, and the end of a good work). Certain psychologies of Carl Jung are also reflected throughout the Bedtime Stories era (anima, shadow, opus), specifically the Bedtime Story music video, with which it takes about the unconscious, and references Eastern religion. Especially in the nineties, after what was considered her failure with Erotica, Madonna needed to bring together a union of conflicting opposites to ensure harmony within her own career and personal life, so she could find solid footing again after what seemed like neverending tumultuous-ness with Erotica. Music would also continue this spiritual direction, with not caring of what other people thought, of reclaiming oneself against an onslaught. Erotica was a battle of the ego, and it was with Bedtime Stories that Madonna truly began to break free.
Madonna and Michael Jackson practically created MTV and the concept that a song should have the visuals to go with it , and Madonna songs are created already thinking on the video that will illustrate the lyrics, no artist I know were able to create videos that are so beautifully connected with the song being play, most her videos are really like small movies on itself, what she did and still does in videos deserve to be watch, all were well thought out and got a message, you should totally should do video reactions do her videography, I actually think it would be great basing that you starting from the point of someone that doesn’t particular like music videos
both did good but this is more so a Madonna trait than Jackson while Jackson did revolutionize things with "Thriller" it became the same old stale repeated video over and over with the same monotone storyline. as MTV quoted when they gave Madonna the MtV vanguard award (and the artist of the decade Award ) over jackson "Madonna is the first Video Music Superstar"
Madonna is the real Music Video Auteur with her influential visuals. You've got to see her entire videography that became a springboard to modern pop stars today.
OMG - this was the best reaction of Bedtime Story video ever! I laughed so much and I do love this video. You should do some more please :) - maybe Rain ? - - - or Bad Girl
That last shot with the mouths and the eye gets 'em every time. One thing I would suggest though: Don't assume the video's interpretation of the song is necessarily the key to understanding the song. As I'm sure every fifth comment here probably mentions, it was written by Bjork not for Madonna but for her friend and producer at the time. And to try to analyze anything borne of Bjork's mind is to invite insanity. LOL. My personal take on the video is that it represents a sleep study in which Madonna's very abstract lucid dreams are explored, with many references to artists that inspire her. You did well in how you interpreted it. And I have to say, you really impressed me: Of all the "Bedtime Story" reaction videos I've seen, you are as of right now the ONLY one to have caught the SUBJECT: M CICCONE detail. Well done!
Perhaps maybe you are just not a fan of BAD videos. Maybe? Madonna is a visionary and very much a visual artist. She is so well rounded. She has always taken music to a whole different art form. More than just the beats, lyrics and vocals....the visual is like the 4th dimension. This is one reason her LIVE performances and tours have been so successful. It’s not just the singing and the dancing, the visuals are always stunning.
You have never experienced Madonna without seeing her music videos and live performances. There's a reason shes known as the pioneer of music videos (With Jackson) and live pop concerts.
Enjoyed your reaction to this and the album. I personally love the album. It's a mood. Anyway, Madonna is one of the greatest video artists of all time, so you're really missing out if you don't check out her videos. Some suggestions: Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Oh Father, Vogue, Justify My Love, Erotica (uncensored), Bad Girl, Rain, Secret, I Want You, Frozen, Don't Tell Me, American Life (uncensored), Hung Up. Get at it!
Told ya! 😉👍🏻 now you can talk! I think the other reactions already filled you in on the symbolism and other great tidbits about this video! You are welcome btw! 😛😘
This video is very avant-garde...and to this day considered a work of modern visual art. It is permanently exhibited in different art galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art as well the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Great reaction mate!!! Please react to take a bow from the same album and then you’ll see which is the sequel video and continues the story from where take a bow leaves off
Thank you for this réaction . Nice to Know thatMADONNA continue to be THE QUEEN OF POP I NEVER DOUBT ÀBOUT THIS .such an iconic video only madonna CAN do it PLEASE RÉACT ON:VOGUE. JUSTIFY MY LOVE, médellin , AMERICAN Life God save THE QUEEN 👑👑👑
So madonna used to have a magazine for her fan club named icon and there was a comic strip explaining the video... she is abducted by aliens and then all those images we see after are the thoughts in her mind 😍
Music videos are basically shit now. They used to be an art form for a lot of artists that you anticipated. In fact for this very video Madonna held a big premeir/watch party on Mtv back when they played music instead of crappy shows.
At the time I didn't understand the art of this video, I liked it a lot though, I'm sure younger generations wouldn't understand it. You need to search because it has a lot of art in it. There is something here resembling a paint of Frida Khalo.
I don't blame you for not being that into music videos. They don't seem to be very creative anymore. Just the singer gyrating with a troupe of dancers doing choreography. *yawn* And I HATE when videos are literal interpretations of the lyrics. Artists like Madonna, Duran Duran and Bjork really lifted music video to an art form. The video should be inspired by the mood of the music, not necessarily a literal depiction of the lyrics. You'll notice that near the start of the video, the computer she is attached to reads "Lucid". Lucid dreams are dreams in which you are fully conscious and aware that you are dreaming. Things take on a hyper-real quality, even if they are strange or impossible in reality. With practice, you can also learn to manipulate and control aspects of your dreams. Tripping or falling can wake you suddenly out of a lucid dream too, so towards the end as we see her start to stir in her sleep, it's intercut with shots of her falling through a starry sky. Then she fully awakens. I have been practicing lucid dreaming for years so I was really excited when this video came out. The fact that it was written by Bjork and Nellee Hooper makes it one of my favorite Madonna songs ever.
Sigmund Freud...try not to analyze the Video so much. Just accept as an amazing work of Art. The Graphics, the colors, the imagery. Visually this is an Amazing video.

I tried to find the video when I was there in 2018 but couldn’t find it - I even asked a member of staff🥺 it is a piece of art 😍
also from Tarkovsky (apropos of movie references - the boy moving the glass with his mind). fantastic video.
And the video was also inspired by Fridah Kahlo's painting The Two Fridahs where you have 2 Madonnas interacting with each other.
Madonna's Brilliance. Absolutely.
Yes, thanks....I would answer but you were perfect. All this write is true.
If you keep doing Madonna reactions then I’m going to follow you. Love to see you discover the genius of Madonna

OMG - this was the best reaction of Bedtime Story video ever! I laughed so much and I do love this video. You should do some more please :) - maybe Rain ? - - - or Bad Girl
Great idea!!
Yay! Someone else who likes Madonna. I don’t understand why she’s not liked. I love this woman!
Thank you so much for watching!

Anyway, Madonna is one of the greatest video artists of all time, so you're really missing out if you don't check out her videos. NOT CREEPY ...You Do not quite get it ... Totally miss the Boys holdings the Poppies , Heroine , OPIUM Watch :All is full is love by Bjork
Ok
