This video was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and it's permanently displayed there as a piece of video art. It was actually the first music video to be exhibited and acquired as a piece or art in a museum. The song talks about leaving the conscious world and entering the unconsciousness into an altered state of mind. The video recreates several paintings by surrealist painters Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. It also contains elements from Jungian psychology such as the representation of the collective unconscious and archetypes. So the whole thing is a journey into the unconscious world, the world of dreams and visions. The spinning dancers are called dervishes. In sufism (the mystical side of Islam) they say that when the dervishes twirl they get unconscious and they become one with God. It also recreates scenes from surrealist movie "The color of pomegranates". And the spinning box was taken from the movie Hellraiser, that is about a puzzle box that opens the doors to another state of perception beyond the human limits of experience.

@@sillywilly7887 yes. I've been studying Sufism for many years. It's beautiful. Their poetry is amazing. Actually Madonna did a sufi poem by Rumi in her song "Bittersweet". He was the main sufi poet.

Madonna asked Bjork's producers to have Bjork write a song for Madonna, because she appreciated Bjork's artistic aesthetic, and Bjork did the 'ol 'I don't know her' bit, but after much more pleading from Madonna's team Bjork, settled on writing Madonna a song:
"Björk did not consider herself a fan of Madonna's music, but she was intrigued by the offer and she accepted it. She wrote a song initially named "Let's Get Unconscious", with the opening lyrics "Today is the last day, That I'm using words"-the lines being born out of Björk's own criticism of Madonna's aesthetic. The singer clarified, "When I was offered to write a song for [Madonna], I couldn't really picture me doing a song that would suit her... But on second thought, I decided to do this to write the things I have always wanted to hear her say that she's never said."

...and if Bjork sparks any sort of interest with you, I suggest watching/ listening to her work with 'The Sugar Cubes' before going solo with 'Debut' & 'Post' (if ya don't know Bjork she's an acquired taste (that I find delicious) and I wouldn't jump ahead to her work she does today, because it might not make sense out of context of her 'journey' (each CD is intentionally placed in the order she wanted to tell her story with)

I love watching you react to the Queen's work. I forget that young people (I'm 41) did not get a chance to witness M's evolution take place in real time.
MTV had a launch party for this video's premiere. Madonna made an appearance at Webster Hall, danced her ass off, and read the audience a bedtime story.
The video was inspired by the work of female surrealist painters, specifically Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. It was a fun time to be a fan - the singles/music videos from the Bedtime Stories album showcased M's creative range.
Some Madonna video suggestions (in chronological order, but I won't tell you the years):
Material Girl - An homage to Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
    Open Your Heart
Express Yourself - Directed by David Fincher (before he was famous)
Vogue - ICONIC (you must also watch the MTV VMA performance from 1990); also directed by David Fincher
Bad Girl - Some of her best video acting; also directed by David Fincher (can you tell I stan?)

The director of the video Mark Romanek explained that he and Madonna had the idea of making a video in wich each scene is a video version of a painting, Madonna have always been a big art collector, and they both agreed that it would be interesting to put focus specially in female surrealists. So for example the scene with her in a space covered with water and strange creatures heads is a reference of The Ends of the Earth (1949) by Leonora Fini, an Argentinean surrealistic painter, and the scene with the 2 Madonnas with mirrors as heads is Los amantes by Remedios Varo. Its fair to say that with this one Madonna made history since the MoMa included this video as a permanent piece in their collection. Loved your reaction guys, its really great to revisit this videos through your eyes. 🐀🇨🇱

Occultism in Bedtime Story video by Madonna
1º At the beginning of clip, we can see 'The All Seeing Eye", the highest symbol of the Illuminattis. This eye welcomes Madonna, by displaying a 'welcome' notice as we see a Madonna going through a sort of trance and heading for a state of 'unconsciousness'. This video refers to a 'cosmic journey' or 'astral travel' which Madonna experiences, in which 'words are useless' and this journey can only be done by means of the mind.
2º Below this notice, we can see the legend "Ciconne, M.", which may mean Ciconne is masonic or "Ciconne, Madonna".
3º The blue liquid running down a crystal tube represents the 'blue blood' or 'cold blood' from the Masons, which finally makes her wake or become 'lucid'. This situation reveals that Madonna is mentally controlled by her Mason Masters, who decide when she must be lucid and when she must not.
4º Madonna is seen singing with a sunflower behind her. This represents the symbol of the Sun, which is usually cult object in Secret Societies and old pagan religions. It is well known that The Sun has been worshiped for thousand years as a pagan god by numerous old civilizations e.g. The Celts, The Egyptians etc.
5º The levitating cube, in another scene, with black and white faces of Madonna is related to the cult to Saturn and Adoration to Satan, then.
6º The animals' skulls floating on a water tank beside a naked Madonna are the highest symbols of the dark elites. This scene may describe the destruction of animals and the ecosystem, since the images suggest that the animales are dead.
7º The doves which come out from a pregnant Madonna are related to 'peace' so this scene may suggest that Madonna will give birth to a Messiah who will bring 'peace' to humanity. Besides, this situation may make fun of 'The Holy Spirit'.
8º The two mirror-headed Madonnas , seated one in front of the other, try to unveil Madonna's multiple personalities, after being exposed to an MK-ultra mental control.
9º Madonna, levitating along a corridor, displays the fact that she has been lifted to a higher level of a Dark Priestess, where she lies above the rest of the Illuminati puppets, represented by the 3 boys who look at her in admiration as she passes flying by.
10º In the minute 3:22, we can see Baphomet represented by a sort of brown glasses with the form of goat which a woman uses to cover her face. This odd glasses seems to represent Baphomet's head.
11º The woman looking up to the sky represents a 'fallen angel' since she is showed with scars on her back where evidently there were wings as well as 'goat legs' instead of human legs.
12º The foot treading on a bunch of grapes on an Arabic scripture may suggest the way wine is made but it may also mean "stepping on 'Jesus Christ's Blood'".
13º In the minute 3:33, which constitutes the masonic number by excellence, Madonna sticks out her tongue at the time when a flashing light comes out from her forehead, showing the opening of her third eye. This means that she receives secrets and gifts from 'the dark magic' as a result of her worshiping her reptilians entities. She opens her mind to the 'Dark Magic'.
14º Madonna falling to an empty space full of stars gives us the idea that 'once she signs the pact with the dark elite, there is no turning back': She has given away her soul to the Devil.
15º Madonna sleeping on a human skeleton, which is watching over her very attentively, means that now Madonna is embraced by The Death itself and that Madonna becomes a living dead: she has no longer a soul so as to become a puppet, losing her consciousness and becoming 'unconscious'.
16º In the minute 4:03, Madonna's face displays lips where normally the eyes should be and an eye where normally a mouth should be. This scene unveils the fact that The Illuminatis will control what she might sing and say as an artist. That is why she sings 'Today is the last day that I'm using words...They are gone now....Lost their meaning....Don't function anymore...."
17º At the end of this video, the 'thank you' notice gives thanks to Madonna for having signed the pact and given away her soul to the Devil. This means that Madonna will give service to 'it' until the end of her living days.
18º 'Bedtime Story' seems to be the last song that Madonna has sung before giving her soul and agreeing to be lifted to the grade of Dark Priestess.

One of the most iconic creative videos of all time, directed by the incomaparable Mark Romanek! The song was written by Bjork. I had the pleasure of experiencing this music video in an epic way. So she premiered this video in April 1995 by having a Pajama Party at a gay club in NYC, Webster Hall and the only way to go to this "party" was to win tickets off the radio......I won. She go-go danced for us, she read a bedtime story and the premiered the music video on a huge screen for us. If you look up MTV Bedtime Story Pajama Party you can see it. Drag queens, gay go go boys and Junior Vasquez DJing - she was in an epic mood too because I think she had just found out she got the role for Evita.

This video (not the song, which was written by Bjork and has a lengthy story of its own) is a commentary on lucid dreaming. At the beginning, she appears in a futuristic clinic. The words: WELCOME. SUBJECT: M. CICCONE (which refers to Madonna's full name). It suggests a sleep study and shortly thereafter the word LUCID appears, at which point we enter the surreal imagery of one's dreams. Some is beautiful, some is terrifying. At the end, she wakes. The experiment is complete and the screen reads THANK YOU.
So glad you two did this one - I came across these videos a few days back and was eagerly anticipating your reactions to this. I've had a lot of fun in the past playing BEDTIME STORY for friends - including one bad episode where someone that had taken hallucinogenics reacted badly to the shot near the end where mouths replace her eyes and her mouth is an eye. The song was written by Björk, Nellee Hooper and Marius De Vries; which collaborated with Bjork on her critically acclaimed debut album, called Debut. Madonna wanted that British pop sound and since she recruited Nellee Hooper (Bjork´s producer and personal friend) she asked him to reach out to Bjork for a song.... Nellee did, but he didn't tell Bjork it was for Madonna, so Bjork did it as a personal favor to Nellee... a lot of people at the time said that if Bjork would have known it was for Madonna, she probably wouldn't have done it. You can see an interview for a VMAs show in the 90s where Bjork talks about this.

This video was such an important piece of art that it is on constant rotation in I think the New York museum of art? That's what I read and these are references to surrealist feminist artists that Madonna was inspired by, in a dreamlike state. Madonna starts the video as a test subject to see what her dreams would be and that is what we end up seeing. It's literally one of the most amazing videos and I remember watching the bedtime party on MTV when it premiered, stayed up all night for that one!

@DanDTV This music video is one of the most daring and compelling video from Madonna and, in my opinion, from anybody. Madonna has said that this music video is inspired by certain surreal painters: Remedios Varo, Frida Kahlo and Eleonora Carrington. The video has been part of various art gallery exhibitions and it's been permanently kept in MoMa and the School of Visual Arts in New York. This video is more than a music video, it's art.
To me this video represents a surreal dream. Dreams don't have logic that could be explained or compared to "real life". Dreams are beautiful, sometimes scary and odd. When we sleep, our brain builds a model of the world we experience without sensory information of the "real" world. And that's what we experience as dreams. I think all of this is represented in the lyrics that the Islandic music genius Björk wrote. Björk thought that at the time Madonna was too in control of herself and her art and she wanted her to loosen up and "go with the flow", follow her intuition. By the way, Björk released her own version of this song, called (incidentally) "Sweet Intuition". Both have expressed huge mutual admiration towards one another. There was no negativity surrounding the making of this song, despite some of the comments here.
This song was produced by Madonna and Nellee Hooper. If you like this song, you should check out "Blue Lines" by Massive Attack, "Debut" and "Post" by Björk. All of these albums were produced by Nellee and they're really awesome!

Bedtime Story, the track, only happened because Madonna begged Nellee Hooper (one of the co producers on Bedtime Stories the album) to ask Bjork for a song as he had produced her first album and Madonna loved the sound. Bjork was hesitant at first but ultimately accepted it as a gift to her friend Nellee. The video was exhibited and permanently kept in different art galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art as well the School of Visual Arts in New York City. It was influenced on many surrealist paintings done by artists Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo and it's to date the fourth most expensive music video ever done in history.

The video received acclaim from critics and is permanently displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City

You HAVE to do Deeper and Deeper... ICONIC song and even more ICONIC video... paying homage to the clubbing days of the past. An homage to Andy Warhol as Madonna plays the role of a character based on Edie Sedgwick and goes to meet her boyfriend out at the club. As a young gay, this was the video I used to see on MTV that made me wish to go to the clubs.
    DEEPER AND DEEPER PLEASE!!!

This video (1995) was and still is eons ahead of its time. It was filmed as to mimic a surreal painting and it was inspired by various female painters including Frida Khalo, Leonora Carrington, and Remedios Varo. Fun fact this video is considered work of visual art and is permanently exhibited in prestigious museums around the world including MoMA and The School of Visual Arts in NYC.

This video dramatizes the song lyrics, which were written by Björk. The song is about breaking away from logical, rational thinking that can’t really articulate the full depth and complexity of feeling, and instead respecting and accepting the unconscious or subconscious and what it presents. The video presents a variety of religious, natural and other types of archetypal symbolism in a collage to convey feeling without any specific meaning, as dreams can do. It’s my favorite Madonna song and video. She has never done anything else like it, but you should watch Björk’s videos for Hyperballad, Hunter and Joga immediately, as well as Tori Amos’s Caught a Lite Sneeze. :)

Madonna tried to get Bjork to write a whole album for her, but Bjork declined and gave her this song instead. The original is called Sweet Intuition and there's two versions of it by Bjork. This is actually very well produced, but as a Bjork fan, I love the original too.

MTV had a whole special to premier this video where Madonna threw a pajama party with fans and read them a bedtime story before MTV premired the video. Those were the days when MTV actually focused on MUSIC and played videos!
The crowd when Madonna was trying to read her bedtime story (while in a bed) would not be quiet at the start and Madonna was getting angry about it and would stop reading the story until their was silence. At one point someone yelled out "YOU GO GIRL!" and without missing a beat Madonna goes, "I will go if you don't shut up!". Classic.
Here's the MTV special. Check it out.
