It was the first electronic onslaught on Madonna's career. The video is one of the most striking and brings the surrealist influence of the artists Remedios Varo, Frida Kahlo, Lucien Freud, Leonor Frini, Leonora Carrington, among many others, under the watchful eye of the talented and brilliant director Mark Romanek (who had already directed the brilliant video Rain).
The work is so important and significant for modern art that it is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMa).
He had one of the most expensive budgets for a video clip at the time, $ 5 million.
This video brings countless symbologies, meanings and re-readings of surrealist works. The freakshowbusiness blog has done some time ago a thorough analysis of what is portrayed in this video and what message Madonna wanted to pass. The general idea is of death and life, birth and rebirth through art, especially the surrealist, who preaches creation through the unconscious, the work of art as the visual concretization of dreams, something that can not be expressed in words, abandoning the logic and reason. As the lyrics say.
Lucien Freud is not surrealistic like the other inspirers of the video, but is grandson of Sigmund Freud, father of the psychoanalysis and master of the interpretation of the dreams. The reference to the picture, therefore, can be a hint to the viewer, stating that the clip is based on dreams, on images of the unconscious and needs to be interpreted by a bias that runs away from the obvious.
The light of the moon reflecting in the water inside a well is probably inspired by these two paintings by the Spanish surrealist artist Remedios Varo: Born Again (Renascer, 1960) and Moon Reflection (Moon Reflection, 1957). The reference in Los Amantes de Remedios is also very clear.
Another strong surrealistic inspiration of Bedtime story is the film Sayat Nova (USSR, 1968), by the Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov. The work, about the poet who gives it its name, is better known in the West as The color of Pomegranates. It is a surrealistic film, which intends to speak with the language of the soul, of the dreams, of the unconscious. From him came out several images that we find in the clip of Madonna, like the foot treading a bunch of grapes on written words, or the child being covered.
    SYMBOLISMS
White dove: In the Christian tradition, baptism is a rebirth, the central theme of this clip. When Jesus was baptized by St. John the Baptist, a white dove came down to him. For Catholics, the animal represents the Holy Spirit.
Fish: For Jung, it is a symbol of a deep state of unconsciousness, when seen swimming in a dream. For Christians, it is an ancient symbol of their belief. In times of Roman persecution, Christians used the fish symbol to identify themselves as followers of Jesus in secret. This is because the initials in Greek of "Jesus Christ son of God the Savior" form the word "fish". It was a way of saying a Christian without needing words for it, just like Madonna does in this clip. Unlike many of her previous videos, Madonna shows no cross on Bedtime story; however, this is his video with the largest number of Christian symbols. (At that time, 1995, she was not yet a Kabbalah supporter, an esoteric doctrine of Jewish origin that would dominate her music videos later.) It is no coincidence that in this clip a fish appears swimming over a verse of the song that has the following translation in Portuguese:
    "Words are useless, especially sentences"
Madonna has already revealed that the scene is inspired by the work of Jenny Holzer, an American conceptual artist who designs or exposes giant-sized phrases in public places.
Grape: For Christians, the grape symbolizes the joy of living, the great gift of God, and the fruitfulness of the Christian faith. And from the grape, trampled by human feet in the ancient tradition, comes the wine, symbol of the blood of Jesus.
Eye: As an ancient Christian symbol, the eye represents ideas, concepts and abstractions, so dear to surrealism and Bedtime story. It is also the image of the omniscience of God.
Fallen Angel: For Christians, angels are links between God and man, divine messengers. And fallen angels, stripped of their wings, are those who have been banished from Paradise because they rebelled against God. Lucifer is the best known of fallen angels.
Egg and Child: The egg appears at some point in Bedtime story. For Christianity, it is a symbol of the generation of life, birth and rebirth. It is the cocoon where the origin of life is, and not by chance the female sex cell has been called egg. At Easter, the egg represents the renewal of life, just like the child.
Sunflower: Another symbol of Easter. It represents the search for light in Christ. Just as the sunflower seeks the Sun, Christians seek in Jesus the way, the truth, and the life.
Octogram: The eight-pointed star is, in some cultures, another symbol of creation and fertility. For Christians, it symbolizes regeneration. Therefore, many fonts have an octagonal base. In a video scene, a child appears seated on an eight-pointed star.
Pregnancy: Obviously, it is the life in gestation, the miracle of life, the imminence of the birth of a child and the rebirth of the mother.
Peacock: In the scenes where Madonna appears pregnant in Bedtime story, there is a peacock on each side. In early Christianity, the peacock symbolizes resurrection and is related to Easter. For others, the peacock is also a symbol of eternity, due to the ancient belief that its flesh does not deteriorate after death. But in other traditions, the peacock also represents vanity, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Antichrist.
Water: Present throughout the music video, water symbolizes the origin, because, as they say, all life comes from water. Bathing is a rebirth, and not by chance is water essential for baptism. Also, getting into the water can also represent a dive into the unconscious for some cultures. Here it is back to the lyrics:
Rock: In some cultures, the rock represents the womb, the place where life originates. In the Bible, rock is constantly cited as a reference to God and Christ. In the Old Testament, it represents the Creator's strength, protection, refuge, and salvation of the people. In the New Testament, Christ is the cornerstone of everything, it is the rock from which flows the spirit of life.
Algae: The green that sprouts through the rocks under water is life being born and imposing itself. Algae is the primary source of oxygen, essential to life. A particular Bedtime story scene brings together this and the two above symbols: seaweed, stone and water:
Book: The book, when opened, symbolizes the revelation of truth, the word of God.
Poppy: Symbolizes spiritual drowsiness and sleep of death. Hence, she is often portrayed in crucifixions and the deaths of saints. From his flower is extracted opium, hallucinogenic drug. And opium is made of morphine, a drug that relieves unbearable pain, but can also cause hallucinations and lead to death.
Circle: Another symbol of eternity, having no beginning or end.
Skeleton: Universal symbol of death. In Christianity, the skull at the foot of the cross carries the message that everyone dies but can continue to live in Christ.
Well: It is the source of water, of life. It represents the womb, place of birth and rebirth. It is also a remembrance of Jesus, the source of the water of life, as he referred to himself when he asked for water from a woman standing in front of a well. A certain scene from Bedtime story suggests that Madonna is inside a well, watched by a man on the surface.
Moon and star: There are also Islamic symbols in Bedtime story. The moon next to a star is the best-known symbol of Islam. But it is also a representation of the power to carry through the cosmos.
Dervishes: They are members of an Islamic sect whose dance in continuous whirls culminates with a hypnotic trance, in a ritual of delivery whose objective is the ecstasy. In general, they advocate open mind and art. They wear a white shirt (which represents a shroud) with a coat over it. Taking off the coat during the ritual is born to the truth. They dance around their own axis to feel in the eye of a hurricane, the quiet place in the midst of the storm, and so they connect with God, who is within everyone.
    Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷

Marissa!! You totally saw it and I am glad you liked it! As others have said in the comments, the video represents 4 different artists.... in the beginning and end she is having this "experience or dream" loaded into her through the drip. Madonna's last name is the program she is accessing (Says Ciccone). I have always loved this video but didn't know for years it was based off 4 artists works. I am so glad this video is in the MOMA in New York, It truly is a work of video art.

Occultism in Bedtime Story video by Madonna
1º At the beginning of clip, we can see 'The All Seeing Eye", the highest symbol of the Illuminattis. This eye welcomes Madonna, by displaying a 'welcome' notice as we see a Madonna going through a sort of trance and heading for a state of 'unconsciousness'. This video refers to a 'cosmic journey' or 'astral travel' which Madonna experiences, in which 'words are useless' and this journey can only be done by means of the mind.
2º Below this notice, we can see the legend "Ciconne, M.", which may mean Ciconne is masonic or "Ciconne, Madonna".
3º The blue liquid running down a crystal tube represents the 'blue blood' or 'cold blood' from the Masons, which finally makes her wake or become 'lucid'. This situation reveals that Madonna is mentally controlled by her Mason Masters, who decide when she must be lucid and when she must not.
4º Madonna is seen singing with a sunflower behind her. This represents the symbol of the Sun, which is usually cult object in Secret Societies and old pagan religions. It is well known that The Sun has been worshiped for thousand years as a pagan god by numerous old civilizations e.g. The Celts, The Egyptians etc.
5º The levitating cube, in another scene, with black and white faces of Madonna is related to the cult to Saturn and Adoration to Satan, then.
6º The animals' skulls floating on a water tank beside a naked Madonna are the highest symbols of the dark elites. This scene may describe the destruction of animals and the ecosystem, since the images suggest that the animales are dead.
7º The doves which come out from a pregnant Madonna are related to 'peace' so this scene may suggest that Madonna will give birth to a Messiah who will bring 'peace' to humanity. Besides, this situation may make fun of 'The Holy Spirit'.
8º The two mirror-headed Madonnas , seated one in front of the other, try to unveil Madonna's multiple personalities, after being exposed to an MK-ultra mental control.
9º Madonna, levitating along a corridor, displays the fact that she has been lifted to a higher level of a Dark Priestess, where she lies above the rest of the Illuminati puppets, represented by the 3 boys who look at her in admiration as she passes flying by.
10º In the minute 3:22, we can see Baphomet represented by a sort of brown glasses with the form of goat which a woman uses to cover her face. This odd glasses seems to represent Baphomet's head.
11º The woman looking up to the sky represents a 'fallen angel' since she is showed with scars on her back where evidently there were wings as well as 'goat legs' instead of human legs.
12º The foot treading on a bunch of grapes on an Arabic scripture may suggest the way wine is made but it may also mean "stepping on 'Jesus Christ's Blood'".
13º In the minute 3:33, which constitutes the masonic number by excellence, Madonna sticks out her tongue at the time when a flashing light comes out from her forehead, showing the opening of her third eye. This means that she receives secrets and gifts from 'the dark magic' as a result of her worshiping her reptilians entities. She opens her mind to the 'Dark Magic'.
14º Madonna falling to an empty space full of stars gives us the idea that 'once she signs the pact with the dark elite, there is no turning back': She has given away her soul to the Devil.
15º Madonna sleeping on a human skeleton, which is watching over her very attentively, means that now Madonna is embraced by The Death itself and that Madonna becomes a living dead: she has no longer a soul so as to become a puppet, losing her consciousness and becoming 'unconscious'.
16º In the minute 4:03, Madonna's face displays lips where normally the eyes should be and an eye where normally a mouth should be. This scene unveils the fact that The Illuminatis will control what she might sing and say as an artist. That is why she sings 'Today is the last day that I'm using words...They are gone now....Lost their meaning....Don't function anymore...."
17º At the end of this video, the 'thank you' notice gives thanks to Madonna for having signed the pact and given away her soul to the Devil. This means that Madonna will give service to 'it' until the end of her living days.
18º 'Bedtime Story' seems to be the last song that Madonna has sung before giving her soul and agreeing to be lifted to the grade of Dark Priestess.

From Wikipedia. I would loved to have seen her opening up her chest cavity!
“Filming stopped for few hours when a minor earthquake shook the film studio.[49] Few complications were encountered like Madonna getting dyed in blue color from sitting in the water tank, as well as technical difficulties leading to cancellation of a storyboard showing the singer opening her chest cavity. One shot involving Madonna lying in the lap of a skeleton had to be postponed since the skeleton was too small for the singer, and had to be rebuilt from scratch. The last scene filmed was the one involving the laboratory where Madonna was shown sleeping in a futuristic dress.”

This was acclaimed by music critics when it came out in 1995. It’s considered one of the most expensive music video produced ($5mil in 1994, $8.5mil in today’s money) filmed over 6days at the Universal Studios in Los Angeles using then state-of-the-art tech for its visual imagery. It’s on permanent display as surrealistic art at the MoMA in NYC. Marissa got the part right about the amazing centuries-old mystical dance of the Turkish Sufi “whirling dervish”-that requires skill and mastery to perform to overcome dizziness. Their clothing, fez-like hat, arm and head movements, diet and music-all has specific function to achieve the trance state of mind over the body.

Watch some Björk from that era and you will understand why it’s trippy. Voilently Happy has rather simular beats but Hyperballad is more easy to listen too. In the beginning of the 90’s most experimental electronic music came from the UK and it was such a breath of fresh air with all the grunge and R’n’B going on everywhere. Madonna has always had an eye for upcoming trends so she wanted part of this sound. On the other side she wanted to win over the US again after being shamed for her previous Erotica album. So Bedtime Stories, the album, is very R’n’B orientated but has 2 tracks that have the ‘triphop’ sound. This one and Sanctuary. I didn’t get this album when it came out since I love Madonna doing things she wants and not giving a F***. This felt like a super commercial crowd pleaser. Over the years it grew on me tho, for it’s retro 90’s sound.

    How to explain unconsciousness?
The video is about the state of non-consciousness, about dreams, the name of the song is self-explanatory.
The surrealist language used by various artists was brought together to illustrate all of this.
Traveling, traveling in the arms of uncounsciousness... leaving logic and reason... 🎶

It's supposed to be about being unconscious and dreaming. You should check out her live version of this, it's pretty cool.

One of Madonna’s contemporaries is Kylie Minogue, who has done similar dreamlike videos: Finer Feelings, Breathe, and On A Night Like This, where you are not too sure of the narrative. Few of my Madonna favourites are Spanish Eyes, The Look Of Love, Time Stood Still and Live To Tell (album version, the video version is edited savagely.)
