I always smile when John says, "it's not very old, just a couple hundred years or so...", the U.S. audience look at that time as nearly the existence of this country, according to our limited history.
Saw an interesting article in the Guardian today: "Silver coin boom in medieval England due to melted down Byzantine treasures, study reveals." Those silver hammered coins have a pre-minted history too.
You have to imagine wth all the small toys found that many of the women who were seasonal workers in the fields brought their small children with them since they couldn't leave them alone. Gives you a different view of the workers life.
Blessings, my Scottish Detectorist friend, from this old man in Tennessee. Thanks for making my day better. It was overcast and drizzling rain all day long. The eclipse came and went and we only saw a slight dimming of the outdoor light. Oh well…it was a thing. Great show…and I also think that Simon is a good luck charm for ya.
Haha 😜 that would have been nice but no just my first Perthshire Polar Bear 🐻❄️ love it!! I’ve had a couple of Canadian coins and military badges, but maybe one day a $2!!
Thanks Sally!! Amazing info! Thanks so much!! And what about the great lead animal debate?? Well now we have sloth, 🦥 polar bear 🐻❄️ sheep 🐑 and Dinosaurs 🦖 oh…. And a Tapir 🤣 the great lead animal debate!!
The hump makes it look like a polar bear, but I agree with Simon that the face is either a very poor rendition of a polar bear or else it might be a tapir or some other animal.
Did you catch the new 3-part Time Team community dig in Modbury on TH-cam over the weekend? They reenacted making lead musket balls and so on. He talked about size, shape & dates. They found signs of occupation dating back to... oop, gotta watch and see. lol Cheers guys

Silver arrives! Fantastic range of finds and I think that’s a watch face surround near start of your Vid, nice little bear, sloth or whatever?? 😂 it’s amazing how items come from around not only the U.K. but around the world and end up in Perthshire fields? Love your videos and always good to see Simon with you 😊
Who’s been a busy boy then, a really good haul of finds there John, love the Polar Bear and the six pence piece with the Lion on also in the previous videos the 3 legged horse and the horses head etc, it’s got to Animal attraction 😂
Hello John and Simon it's been a while! I haven't been on you tube for 3 months !! It's good to be back and seeing yous having a good day detecting I've just checked and worked out I've got 16 hours or so to catch up on your videos gutted I missed out on the giveaway but at least I get to binge watch your videos now. Great video as always John thanks for sharing keep up the hard work mate 👍
Cute polar bear! (Sorry Simon lol). Some great finds, looking forward to seeing them all in the lightbox. Hope you're having(or had) a great time away, well deserved before the silly season starts! Simon's doing fab, loving his channel, as I told him the other day you two make a great double act 😀
I think that the workers in the field lost their money, cutlery and jewelry after too much White Horse whiskey with lunch.😅 The silver thimble, and the polar bear/tapir, and Simon's pin were some very nice finds. I wish Texas was just across the creek from Scotland, it would be nice to do some detecting in the fields of Perthshire. Cheers from Texas. Enjoy the time with your wife, got to keep her happy.
Thanks Cleggy, that would be great!! And what about the great lead animal debate?!? now we have sloth, 🦥 polar bear 🐻❄️ sheep 🐑 and Dinosaurs 🦖 oh…. And a Tapir 🤣 the great lead animal debate!!

When I saw the 'polar bear' I thought its head remibded me of sonething else. Simon said Tapier! I think it's probably a pilar bear with a not so great head. Ive also seen taylors thimbles with no 'end'. As always a great video 👍
Another really interesting one buddy. Thoroughly enjoy these uploads. Props for getting 41K, a couple of silvers & the Polar bear, Tapir, dinosaur type thing.!! 😉 Bless up 👊
Ring-Pull: Instructions for entering through an automatic door. Justin Case: the husband of Shirley? The polar bear: probably dropped out of the retreating ice during the end of the last ice age. Beautiful thimble, like the Simon says, it’s silbah!! 😄🫣 congrats!
I’m expecting one of these days you’ll find an ark for all your animals… 😂 my vote is that the latest animal find is a polar bear. Nice silver thimble, too. 🥰👍👍
Great video john. I like Simons too, already a subscriber to both channels. I like Simon's music, and how he always catches you stuffing your face. It would be cool If you two filmed what was for lunch. I live in the USA so, I'm curious what on the menu in perthshire
Open top thimbles are often used by farmers to strap a large handkerchief around their neck, just roll the handkerchief up and pull the 2 ends through the thimble.
Great video John. Love that silver thimble, I've not been lucky enough to find a silver one. If I remember correctly you found a couple of nice silver ones a couple of years ago near a bridge 🤔
I think the moons and stars brooch is meant to be up the other way. Based on the clasp position, it would flop forward if pinned on with the stars topside. 🤔
Another great day and plenty of great relics and unknowns as well. Hopefully the museum can shed some light on some of them for us that round gear looking thing was very interesting, but looked really old, so thanks for sharing and see you on the next one.👍🏼👊🏼
Many thanks. Yes, I’m now wondering if the round gear looking thing is part of an Iron Age enamelled brooch!! And now we have suggestions of a lead sloth, 🦥 polar bear 🐻❄️ sheep 🐑 and Dinosaurs 🦖 oh…. And a Tapir 🤣 the great lead animal debate!!
Thanks Sally. I did now wonder that too!! Found some very similar enamelled things online!!! 🤩 Well now we have sloth, 🦥 polar bear 🐻❄️ sheep 🐑 and Dinosaurs 🦖 oh…. And a Tapir 🤣 the great lead animal debate!!
It’s a polar bear. Poorly rendered head, but a polar bear nonetheless. Makers of children’s toys were not known for their authentic looking pieces. Moulds would wear after so many castings.
Time Stamp 34:10, could be a Roman military button or a modern military button with all the flowery designs, LOL! Pink guild?? Sorry, had to, with todays state of things anymore.

@@thescottishdetectorist Polar bear. Painted white, not a tapir, they are brownish and have hooves. Probably dates from the Polar explorer period, Admundsen, Scott, ect, back in the 1920s or so.

When I saw 'polar bear' in the thumbnail, my first thought was "he's found a Canadian coin!". Our $2 coin (toonie) has a polar bear on it :)
Haha 😜 that would have been nice but no just my first Perthshire Polar Bear 🐻❄️ love it!! I’ve had a couple of Canadian coins and military badges, but maybe one day a $2!!
How freaking sweet would that be
Yes, it looks like a polar bear to me too!! Thanks John, wonderful video!
Your #1 Alaskan Fan is loving the polar bear!
If anyone can spot a polar bear 🐻❄️ it’s you Teresa!! Thanks 🤩
The silver thimble is Chester mint and made by Charles Horner (CH) A very well known and collectable silver smith

Quite possible the person making it has never even seen a polar bear before 🤣 I love it!!
I believe your first "odd" find was a back winding key for a Big-Ben dresser clock. I'm thinking early 1900's. Let me know please.😊

Back just before decimalization my pocket money was 3d when it changed over it was 2p 8 blackjacks, fruit salads or flying saucers for a penny
I think the first mystery item is a picture hanging hook, minus it's hook. They use two small nails rather than one
The Victorian Penny with the veiled head is 1898, Veiled, or Widow head only 1895-1901.
I wonder if the curved bronze could a scrap bits of a hollow sculpture. The first one look smooth on the outside but cast on the inside.

That 1853 Penny is pure copper, they changed in 1860 to Bronze
I think the silver thimble hallmark is London 1933 but couldn't see clearly enough.
The first bronze piece looks like a cut-off sprue from casting.
