  • Kenan returns to his friend Bob Blome's place in Arizona to hang out with some of the largest Sulcata Tortoises you will ever see. There are hundreds of them here and the burrows are massive. But keeping big torts can also be a big headache as we'll learn in this episode of Kamp Kenan. Check it out!

When I was young, I wanted a sulcata, but after doing a TON of research, I figured out it was going to be WAY outside my comfort zone. Still love tortoises, though, so I adopted a native Sonoran Desert tortoise from AZGF. Because of Socrates, I turned my back yard into a beautiful desert botanical garden. They don't get big, so I don't need heavy equipment, and his personality is just so cool. The best part is that my dream of having a tortoise came true, and he's native to this habitat, so it's pretty easy to take care of him. Socrates is my little garden guardian. :)
I think it's so important to do the research. Not everyone realizes what it takes to keep exotic pets. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

I never knew sulcatas got so big until I started watching your channel, and now that I know that, I cannot believe there are SO MANY people who get these animals. A lot of the pet youtubers I watch have them, they sell them readily at pet stores, people buy them for their kids. Like...why?? I feel like they are an animal that few people will have the ability to care for properly. I feel like the vast majority of people who buy them either don't know how big they get or they know, but they buy them with the mentality that they can just get rid of them when they get too big which is a terrible way to go into owning an animal 😭 I don't understand how sulcatas have gotten to be such popular pets when there are some really beautiful and amazing species of torts that stay small!

It is sad, but don’t look at the bad. My dad let me get a sulcata when I was 11. We knew what we were getting into… but I’m 20 now and my tortoise is still happy and healthy. Had to learn over time for some things but never anything bad happened. Not every kid was as interested as I was though.

This!!! Our neighbor that keeps letting their cats have kittens in our yard- has also let loose a bunch of baby sulcatas! One wandered into my house and the other my other neighbor found in her driveway. Everytime I go over to tell them he needs to be more responsible and do something about these wild animals he tells me "I'll think about it." I tried calling animal control and they said they don't service our area. Which I didn't even know was a thing?!! I really don't know what to do. They keep just letting their animals reproduce and kittens, tortoises, and puppies are just spawning from their house, wandering around, and then usually get ran over. 😔 They don't care.

I love your channel and I love sulcatas even more, so I don’t no how I just now found this video. Some people might disagree with what I’m about to say, but I hope my sulcata gets the size of these ones. Mines really big but not nearly the size of those ones, mine is about 70 pounds and 10 years old but then again I haven’t weighed him in a long time and when I bought him the breeder had guessed that he was five. He wasn’t sure because he had a very similar set up in Arizona as this guy in the video does so he couldn’t keep track of them all. And he had said that the sulcata I bought from him had actually stayed in a burrow the entire winter before I bought him because he didn’t even no he was in there.

Protrusions are sometimes growth patterns from early wounds from the wild or captivity. Our Female Sulcata was with a family that kept her part time in the garage in a plastic tub and the heat lamp started a fire and she was burned and survived. Now she has upgrowth on her shell edge and strange striations with reshaping from healing and repair growing. All the black burnt parts have finally regenerated and are completely gone from her body and shell now though after 7 or 8 years. They rehomed her with our family once this tragedy happened.

I live in New River Arizona. Periodically neighbors will lose a sulcata from it digging out under a fence or the like, and then it's all hands on deck in the neighborhood until we find it. It's really scary if they get out during a rainy period, which rarely but occasionally does happen in winter.

We have one here in New Mexico. We built a wood shelter with the plastic flaps and placed it over the entrance to the burrow and reinforced the area over the first 3-4 ft of the burrow (the most fragile part as its closest to the surface) so it never collapses. Then I made an IOT(internet of things) heater controller that runs a 500 watt heater and a heat lamp. The controller will look up the weather forecast to determine if the box at the entrance needs to be heated, live readouts to a webpage on the temp and heater state. It also emails an alert if the power cuts or the temp drops too low. This way it can be plugged into a GFCI outlet without risk of power cutting and we don't know it.
We haven't ever had to force him into his house to get him out of the cold, he will come out for short spurts even when its snows but when he wants heat he has to go back to his house and he knows it.

Can you use super glue to fix the skin to the shell? Like you use on humans.

  • @janetkirouac262

Wow, beautiful, I rescued one 8yrs ago, she was in bad shape, her shell was pyramid badly and you can see her shell move when she would breathe, now she is good shell is hard again and she loves food again. Not sure how old she is, compared to your guys, shes really small.they are beautiful creatures, unfortunately i live in canada, so my guys get to go out in summer months, and indoors in winter months, dont know what i will do when shes to big to carry in and out🤣
