However, I think the story about the sword was true at that point in the series. Connor was Duncan's teacher after all. The writers came up with the samurai story later, creating a continuity error.
At that time we didn't know that experienced Immortals could detect pre-Immortals. Which means she probably knew Richie was a pre-Immortal, something we the fans didn''t know until he "died".
The ironic thing about the scene when Mac talks to Richie after getting beaten up is that he knows about Richie being immortal but is trying to keep him from dying because he knows he'll become immortal once he dies

Duncan said "a fellow clansman" gave him the Dragon Head Katana in this episode. Assuming it was Lambert's character "Connor" assuming. However years later in episode "the samurai" .. A brilliant blacksmith in Japan made that sword for Duncan's teacher in turn gave to Duncan on death bed. I always felt that the sword was it's own character in the series and movies.
This episode has a number of logic holes in it. The series was still pretty new, and hadn't "found it's voice" yet. Think of it as non-canon if you like. Better written ones are coming.
The Queen's song Don't Loose your Head has a great teaching to this episode. Poor Deveraux went insane about getting Felicia and became brute and careless, wich costed him his revenge and his own life. Duncan always staid foccused and never missed his adventage, humillating that bitch.
Duncan's is old too. It was given to him by an immortal in the 1700s which means it was also 100s of years old. And swords forged by Masamune are famous for their magnificent craftsmanship. I'm really surprised by the large number of people who keep telling me how wrong I am. It's strange that people are more likely to think that one katana could easily shear another in 2 than they are to think that the writers fucked up/were lazy.
Well it's just that in another episode, he is washed up on the shores of Japan where he meets a mortal Japanese man who gave him that very same sword he's using here.

The irony is there is no safe way to practice full out with sharp swords. Especially Japanese swords, which don't bend. There are blunt, flexible sparring swords for european swords like longswords and sabers (and of course fencing foils etc) but even a blunt iado metal katana sword could run someone thru. (my blunt one is as sharp as my sharp katana, whereas my blunt practice longsword is totally rounded at the tip) This is why for full out sparring while european sword practitioners use blunt flexible swords and protective gear, Japanese sword practitioners use shinai or bamboo swords as used for kendo. I know they are immortal and minor wounds would heal, but what if someone loses a hand or a foot? That of course is to say nothing of the damage to the sword...

He likely had Connor reforge the blade in the traditional manner after this battle and after 3 hours of Connor cussing Duncan out in every language know after finding out how he managed to break a $200,000 Masamune sword
Richie is actually an interesting character. Back in the day i kinda thought Richie was irrelevant, but over time i changed my view. Not only he helps to unfurl Macleod's character further, but he is engaging as he is, because he CAN get hurt, he CAN die (even as an immortal). Macleod, with all my admiration toward him, - but his "plot armor" is way way too thick, so other characters are needed to create situations that can expand and elaborate his personality to the viewer, making him interesting to watch. On top of that, he never really had a proper villain to oppose him - except Horton, who wasn't even an immortal. They should've kept him for longer, much longer. Or made someone new, truly challenging and imposing, who could make us feel that Macleod may be in grave danger, vulnerable. Producers' fault, not Mac's...
@HBKPhill That or a hand and a half sword for those who like the European pattern. Either one works all depends on the wielder's skill. There is something to be said of heavy blades though. Those who can wield them and know how to use them can end a fight as soon as it begins.
Even if it was the real one that he broke he could have simply took the hilt, called Connor MacLeod to have him reforge the blade with steel the same era as the sword. As we saw in Highlander 3, he had to reforge his own blade after Kane broke it.
It seems clear that Richie was cast for comic relief & to make Duncan look better due to Richie's shallowness. Sad really. Richie's character is never allowed to mature or improve.

Richie is actually an interesting character. Back in the day i kinda thought Richie was irrelevant, but over time i changed my view. Not only he helps to unfurl Macleod's character further, but he is engaging as he is, because he CAN get hurt, he CAN die (even as an immortal). Macleod, with all my admiration toward him, - but his "plot armor" is way way too thick, so other characters are needed to create situations that can expand and elaborate his personality to the viewer, making him interesting to watch. On top of that, he never really had a proper villain to oppose him - except Horton, who wasn't even an immortal. They should've kept him for longer, much longer. Or made someone new, truly challenging and imposing, who could make us feel that Macleod may be in grave danger, vulnerable. Producers' fault, not Mac's...

@HBKPhill That or a hand and a half sword for those who like the European pattern. Either one works all depends on the wielder's skill. There is something to be said of heavy blades though. Those who can wield them and know how to use them can end a fight as soon as it begins.

Even if it was the real one that he broke he could have simply took the hilt, called Connor MacLeod to have him reforge the blade with steel the same era as the sword. As we saw in Highlander 3, he had to reforge his own blade after Kane broke it.
