Most of the video is great. I like how thorough you are explaining the power steering pump, the importance of the reservoir, how to use the puller, etc. However, you don't actually show how to remove the power steering pump. I would have loved to see how you got the pump out. Reason being, my pump has a clip on the back side that I struggled to get to. Your model may not have that, yet I think showing how you remove the pump, and reinstallation, in a video titled "how to replace power steering pump", would have been the way to go. Otherwise, love what you're doing man.
Thanks. You’re right about that. This is a long time ago, and I was shooting on a VHS camera, and everything is covered with hydraulic fluid, and there wasn’t very much room under there.
Thanks for posting the video.I just replaced the pump on my '98 Astro after 300,000 miles.I watched your video a couple times and it helped a lot.I've had my fan shroud off 100 times so I just removed it and accessed the pump from the top,I too had to remove the pulley first to get to the bolts, that little tool works suprisingly well.I went underneath to remove the hoses and unbolt the rear bracket.Works great,no more puddles or vibration at stoplights, hope I get 300,000 out of this one.
@@ADVRider78 that's a fact. I've seen an 80s Volvo on the original alternator, starter, fuel pump with over 400,000 miles, 90s Hondas and Toyotas are usually about the same. These days OEM parts *might* last 200,000 and aftermarket parts are Russian roulette.
Thanks for your help bud. Came across this vid while trying to diagnose a noise in an Astro brakes and steering. I warned the guy to be careful and be aware of possible failure and it did the same week. I could not believe how difficult it is to control the vehicle after the failure happened. Luckily the van was moving slowly at the time. Got the parts, tools and working on it now. Thanks Again

If it is hydro boost then faulty power steering pump or leaks will cause both ps and power breaks to be inoperative, bout to do mine today for same thing lol
nice video....I paid 900$ or my 92 and it been one of the most reliable vehicles ive ever had. don't slack on maintenance and they will run forever. took me three hours to change plugs man its tight in there lol.
I'm a little confused. Everything looked good except like how do you get the pump out? it has to be bolted in somewhere right? because it has a belt and all the tension on it. But Per your instructions, you just undo hoses to get it out? Thanks for the heads up about the Reservoir too. I was wondering why it was being sold with and without. I thought They meant the bottle up top too.
I don’t have the van anymore, so I can’t make a video showing exactly how it bolts on, but it definitely bolts on. I don’t think it would have anything to do with the brakes though. They should be vacuum boosted. There isn’t much room in there, so I couldn’t get many good angles of what I was actually doing. Sorry about that. My hands are all covered with power steering fluid, and I didn’t wanna ruin my camera.
@@hoohoohoblin Thanks for your reply. I've done the job and done very much research since. Had a big issue with my pump not coming with the screws on the back so all the fluid just kept leaking out until I finally found out where it was leaking at. Definitely want to bleed the system without the engine running because it just aerates the fluid. Other than that it was a pretty straightforward job. Works like new now. Oh yea and with some of these GM cars, they have a system called hydro boost where it does not have a brake booster due to saving space in the engine bay. The hydro boost system is smaller. and it just used the power steering pump to provide the pressure needed to drive the power brakes as well as the power steering.
You due while still in the van, take of the fan from the water pump, I cut My selft with the fan, it's easier to work from the top, oh well You can work from top & bottom. You got put something on it, I belive i put a wrench a 17 mm..
Hey thanks for being so thorough in the important details! This was extremely helpful. based on other vids i've seen for a variety of auto stuff, you really should do more vids! your awesome....

Thank you! 👍 I believe we have a power steering fluid leak on our '99 Safari. We noticed some fluid under the front of the van this morning and when my wife started the van we could hear what sounded like the power steering pump whinning. I'll have to check it all out later this afternoon after she gets home. I hope it's just a hose! 😟

Something is leaking in the area around my power steering pump. Has been for years. That whole side of the engine bay is so covered in crud i dont know exactly where the leak is coming from...
The ABS wheel sensors tend to get dirty or wear out. I had a GMC Safari van, and now I have a Chevy pick up truck, and I’m both of them the ABS light was on all the time. The good news is that the brakes work normally when the light is on. They just don’t have antilock functionality.
...I believe it's left to right without the motor running several times, then with it running, or instant damage/ hammmering of fluid can happen. Great video thanks. PEACE GRD If we can believe my repair manual and other youtube sites?
Hey, I just bought an Astro from 1989 (4,3 liter V6) and my power steering pump looks to be at a little angel for some reason.... Its pullie isn't therefore completely straight as well. Is it normal or should I look into that? Last owner told me he had tangled with that so maybe he managed to put it back that way somehow....
Christhjian It should be at a straight angle to the belt. It will wear out the belt if it is crooked. I wonder if the bracket is bent and you could bend it back into shape.
Yeah, it seems like it is bent from there. And now when I've attached the new belt, it's clear that the this pullie acutally throws the belt quite significantly. Thank you for the reply! I'll try to fix this.
Provided a shop is doing this, and they're not filming it and leaving anything out, about how long/book time/hours would it take to do this job? shop quoted me $800, and online part price is $157. so how can they charge $550 for labor, that's like 4.5 hours at their shop rate of $120 per hour.
may I say, what looks like an allen bolt holding the pulley on is not. You will need to spend $30 for a puller pusher tool, and you may need to modify the pusher(installer) as it can be shorted for Astro. They use the same tool for many cars. It comes with instructions.
I have a GMC safari and that is not as easy as it seems. It takes about 4 or 5 hours. Cause you have to take off a lot of stuff. There are 5 bolts. Three in front, and 2 in the back. You may have to remove the air conditioning system.
Just how many vehicles do you own?!?!?! Ya got the ford, now the van, the buel, the fxr, the honda, and don't you own some old car your dad gave you??? (not sure on that one) anyway, informative as always.
Sorry. I was all covered with power steering oil, and it was a pretty tight space. There’s probably a better video out there showing how to do this now.

WOW
I put my pulley back on from the top, was 1/10 on hard scale and took about 5 minutes. Hey maybe you had one hand tied behind your back? Try freeing that hand and use both your hands to work. If you still have issues, sell car and buy a bicycle.
the pump must be primed before starting the engine- they destruct easily-- spin by hand and let the fluid work itself in..

I am guessing this isn't AWD. I need to do it on an All wheel drive version. Theres a huge cross member in the way plus the front differential.

If I drill a hole on the pulley to remove the bolts, would that throw it off balance?
