A couple of tips from a long-time mechanic. When youre doing anything under the dash? Take 10 minutes to remove the seat- you will create SO much more room for yourself it changes everything. Second- always have some kind of penetrating fluid on hand, most guys like PB Blaster or Deep Creep- my preferred brand is Aerokroil- amazing stuff. Be very generous about wetting down any exposed threads before unbolting everything- things come apart twice as fast when the threads have some lube and you'll be able to undo many bolts by hand that otherwise would have required the socket wrench. Stay safe out there-
Had to replace the hydroboost on my 2001 Safari van. After watching this video it was quite clear how to accomplish replacing it. Thanks for posting this. Local shop wanted $700+ to do the job. I did it for the cost of the unit thanks to you!
@IIGrayfoxII Labor was only 2 hours but the part was pricy. If I'm honest compared to some of the stuff I've had to do on those vans this was fairly easy. Thanks for your comment.
@fastvpbt1 The videos I make are based on the vehicles that come into my shop so for me to fill your request the same car has to come in with the same problem, not likely in the near future, if one does come in I'll shoot the video if I have the time. Thanks for the comment.
@AngryGunNerd Actually the job wasn't as bad as some of the things I've had to do to these vans. I think timing belts are easy for the most part, depends on how much clearance they give you though. Thanks for your comment.
im doing mine today 2003 astro, I do all my own work, and know exactly how hard anything under the hood is to replace, great video, keep up the good work
@JohnnyDesaint You may still have air in the system, the air in this van didn't purge till I revved the engine up to almost 3K in order to get the brakes and power steering to work. In your case however if that does not work I might be looking to the lines to see if there is a restriction somewhere as it will result in the sam problem and possibly cause your performance issue. Lastly make sure you used the correct fluid, in the case of this van it had to be power steering fluid.
@ShiroMirage413 I shot a clutch master and slave video yesterday, I'm not sure how the footage turned out though as I was up under the dash again. I'm glad you liked this video, thanks for the comment.
@beefystik Thanks for the comment. I can honestly say that when I got out of school it was only the beginning of what I was to learn, school is a great start but the learning really begins when you start working in the field. Best of luck to you and thanks again for the comment.
@linuxbox11 Cap on or off it will still work as the cap is vented, the thing I learned here was that you needed it rev it up to get the brakes and power steering to work again.
@lakayyak I make videos based on what comes into the shop, the next time I get a rack in I'll do my best to make a video for you. Thanks for the comment.
@brakedd That's not the worst it's the front diff and how it limits access to everything up front, it's a van so you can't get to stuff from the top to begin with but put a diff under the engine and you have 0 access.
Eric's a great guy, Doesn't hav to offer his knowledge, But I'm grateful he does; shows he cares about the rest of us, Especially those that can't afford expensive mechanics
@MrGW24 The only reason I did it that way was to show the use of hand tools, if I were going to do it I would have just used my impact and been done for all 4 fasteners. You make a great suggestion though, thanks for your input.
@shodanxx Thanks for the comment. You know what I find funny? The fact that many will not lubricate an 'o' ring before installation but they will COVER a gasket with goop when installing it, backwards, I just don't get it.
@BOOTYART I honestly don't know what that could be but I like working on the AWD Astro Van even less than then 2WD version. The transmission is separate from the AWD, I know that much.
@xylenol15 Actually they use the same engines they just have a different body configuration, they can be difficult to work on as a result of these configurations as you point out however. Thanks for the comment.
@STY1ES911 I don't often see that issue so I probably won't be making that video anytime soon but if I get one in I'll be sure to try and make a video for you.
@jhacksim First there are several types of vacuum in a gasoline engines but the most commonly used vacuum is intake vacuum. Intake vacuum is produced naturally and is the reason the air fuel mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber to begin with, in short without it the engine would not run.
@groutaone I was surprised too but I don't think he ran it too long after he lost brakes and steering. Good to see you here groutaone I love your videos, clear and down to earth.
@JohnnyDesaint I'm wondering if something was left loose during the repair causing the engine to run poorly. I need more clarification on "still don't work", is the brake pedal hard? Does the power steering work?
Rather old video now, but still very valid. I replaced a Hydroboost unit yesterday on a Savana 2500. This video shows a slightly different unit and orientation to the engine bay, but proved very handy in assessing the repair prior to taking it on. Total job took about an hour and a half and a few busted knuckles. Not too shabby for never doing one before.
@MoToRPoLLuTioN Sounds like 2 separate problems. As for the steering make sure your tire psi is correct. As for the brakes I would do an inspection to make sure everything is working right, I sometimes spin the wheels while they are up in the air and apply to brakes to see if they are working correctly. I can say that some pads are made better than others, cheep pads sometimes act that way.
I'm replacing the hyrdoboost on a 2000 C3500 truck. Brake switch and pushrod is surrounded by bracing and steering column brackets. Anyways, your video was most helpful. Liked the parts about getting the air out and your use of hose plyers to help you out. I feel more confident that I will complete this job better today with your help.
@partyboyperk You might want to check the actual fuel pressure to see if there is enough. Even though the pump runs it may not be putting out enough volume to run the engine. Most fuel injected systems need 30-40 psi to run.
HEY ERIC IT WAS THE POWERSTEERING PUMP THAT WAS WRONG WITH MY SAFARI.HYDROBOOST WAS BAD ALSO CAUSE THE CANASTER WAS COMPLETELY OFF .WELL THANX FOR EVERYTHING U WERE A BIG HELP!
@EricTheCarGuy i learn much from watching your videos havent really had much experience with japanese cars. i have worked at ford truck centers and international dealerships. just started working for a ford dealership doing automotive work and its quite a bit different from the diesel world.
Hi Eric just used your video to change a leaking hydroboost on my 96 yukon 6.5 diesel . everthing went well exept putting back the metal retainer for the brake pedal , thank's again for the upload
@shodanxx Given the amount of discussion on my most recent video about the care of gaskets I think I'm going to make some calls and see if I can get an expert to weigh in on this because there seems to be a lot of differing opinions on the subject. As for my opinion using gasket adhesive is a much different practice than using sealant on or in place of a gasket, that is a practice I oppose unless instructed by the manufacturer to do so.
Thanks for the video! I'm converting to a hydroboost because my aggressive cam wasn't giving me too much vacuum. This was the best info on hydroboosts I could find! Great work!
Thanks I never would have thought about that consequence of aggressive cams. Yes, increase lob separation, of course you'll have less vacuum! Good solution bro.
Thanks Eric! We put it together and did not have any brake pedal. We watched your video and discovered what you discovered. The spring loaded centering bracket was not included in the new unit. We took it out of the old one and presto! Thanks!
Great video - appreciate you taking the time, i got a 1995 Astro and Hydroboost just went out and need to change it. Thanks for putting this together and getting me in the right frame of mind and start this repair.
I noticed what you said about the power steering noise, and I also had a noisy power steering pump. So I took the cap off the reservoir and did what you said, and now it makes a lot less noise and works smoother. The steering wheel doesn't jerk around at near-lock anymore either. I thought that whine was normal. I guess I was wrong. Thanks, Eric.
Eric TCG, thank you for the video and especially for showing so much detail. I'm currently on a problem with the brakes dragging on my 2003 Astro. After 10 miles they seize up and overheat. I needed to see the mounts of the master cylinder and the hydroboost connection to the brake pedal before taking the wrenches to anything. Your video covers it very nicely. Your work is greatly appreciated. BTW, the bungee cords are a great idea. It beats the pieces of 2x4 lumber I used to jam in there to keep the hoses out of the way.
Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video! I have 96 3500 truck I need to do this in in the morning. I put it off a year because getting to the clip on the rod and pedal under the column is nowhere as easy as this was. The engineer that designed it needs to be beat with a break line hose....twice! I hear dropping the a bit is the key to getting in there to the clip. I'm not sure how to do it but I will just start removing bolts and figure it out as I go. Thanks again!
this is an awesome video , you are easy to follow. As a GM Tecnician. I just found one of these cars for sale for nothing on Craigslist and now I know how to fix this unit. Thanks a bunch I should buy this car and fix it and sell it.
Hi Eric, kamusta din? (How are you?) I'm from the Philippines and did your guide in replacing car fluids. Your videos are easy to understand and easy to follow. More power to you and your channel. God Bless!
I'm sure you've figured out your problem long before now. I recently had my power steering on my 94 Astro get very hard. After isolating everything, found a u-joint on the steering shaft from the steering column to the gearbox had seized up, and the two halves wouldn't slide either. I had to unbolt the gear box to remove the shaft and found a good replacement at salvage yard. Steering is nice and easy again.
@fastvpbt1 That sounds painful if I'm honest but I got mine from Mac if you'd like to purchase one of your own, I'd feel kind of weird when you gave mine back to me.
So glad you posted this vid. I have to change my clutch master cylinder on my car and its gonna be my first time doing that. Really helped with the camera under the dash cause I know i'll have to disconnect it from the clutch pedal. Really appreciate your hard work Eric. Keep it up.
yeah, But at least he takes the time to help educate us. May save u a fortune in the future. He's doin this out of help to those that can't afford a mechanic. So what if he hates Astro vans . He's genuinly lookin out for those that take the time to appreciate his considerate effort. THANKS ERIC!!!!
@dgraycflrrcom Thanks for the tips but I'm not sure how to bench bleed the booster before installation, I think it came filled with fluid however to at least prime it. I like the tip about cleaning the lines before removal, good idea.
Mine came filled with fluid but I jumped the gun and hit the pedal before I hooked the power steering fluid hose to it and it built up pressure and blew that rubber cap off and spit it all out 🤦🏻
@h23sirlude I will admit that I'm not as familiar with domestics but I'd like to get to know them better, I got kinda board working on Honda's all the time.
Good day This is very easy! The vacuum style booster looks like a "mine" or a donut/bagel with a hose/hoses coming out the front going into the engine. Hydroboost has no large donut, instead it's a small steel "block" with 3 pipes connected directly behind the brake master cylinder.
I wish i had a mechanic like you. All my local mechanics rip you off for money and don't fix the problem. that's why i love watching your videos so much, i might actually get good enough one day to not get scared when looking at the engine bay. :D
I have been dealing with this power steering problem for 3 months had to replace high pressure line was leaking low pressure line rotted out return line needed a looking at last Friday my power steering gear box leaking from Shaft I replaced now looks like power steering pump is leaking it never ends oh and did I mention I don't like working on Astros lol love your videos definitely help me keep her on the road I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for your videos and your generosity this van is the only thing keeping me and my family afloat bouncing from odd job Todd job jack of all trades master of none thanks.
Dude, I love you, LOL "did I mention I don't like working on Astro vans" Thank you soooo much for putting this up on TH-cam , you are the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Underneath a dash, fighting a c-clip, in the cold, AND holding a camera. You are the man Eric!
Had to replace the hydroboost on my 2001 Safari van. After watching this video it was quite clear how to accomplish replacing it. Thanks for posting this. Local shop wanted $700+ to do the job. I did it for the cost of the unit thanks to you!
@sbakar The important thing is to stay positive, it's only a machine. And yes it was pretty late at night when I finished, that was a long day.
@IIGrayfoxII Labor was only 2 hours but the part was pricy. If I'm honest compared to some of the stuff I've had to do on those vans this was fairly easy. Thanks for your comment.

I would rather watch these repair videos, than television. Great video Eric!! Complete, very informative! Better than network television!!!
@ShiroMirage413 I shot a clutch master and slave video yesterday, I'm not sure how the footage turned out though as I was up under the dash again. I'm glad you liked this video, thanks for the comment.
@outlawsonic I'm happy to help. Thanks for the great comment.
@ncrdisabled I've heard them referred to as that myself. Sucks about your accident, sorry to hear about that.
@beefystik Thanks for the comment. I can honestly say that when I got out of school it was only the beginning of what I was to learn, school is a great start but the learning really begins when you start working in the field. Best of luck to you and thanks again for the comment.
@sosquaided We're not alone, you should read some of the comments below. There sure are a lot of those vans out there though. Thanks for the comment.
@linuxbox11 Cap on or off it will still work as the cap is vented, the thing I learned here was that you needed it rev it up to get the brakes and power steering to work again.
@binnsh I've used those, I think they are referred to as "wobble extensions" depending on who made the tool.
@lakayyak I make videos based on what comes into the shop, the next time I get a rack in I'll do my best to make a video for you. Thanks for the comment.
@midlantic1 Wouldn't hurt, would help with noise if there was any.
@nickmydog Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

@kenman1717 The pliers are actually hose pliers made by Mac and your right they would damage spark plug boots. Thanks for the comment.
@BOOTYART I honestly don't know what that could be but I like working on the AWD Astro Van even less than then 2WD version. The transmission is separate from the AWD, I know that much.
@brakedd Yea, working on them is fun too, especially if they are AWD. Thanks for the comment.

@STY1ES911 I don't often see that issue so I probably won't be making that video anytime soon but if I get one in I'll be sure to try and make a video for you.
@sfeliant Not sure but air in the system can certainly cause problems so you want to be sure you get it all out after doing a repair to the system.
@gripracer Space consideration is the primary like in this van but they also use it with diesels because they don't produce a lot of intake vacuum.
@ncarter124 It's all for you baby. Thanks for the comment.
@Ryskimus Well it's been very well received so I'm happy for that. I love making these videos even if some present more of a challenge than others.
@jhacksim First there are several types of vacuum in a gasoline engines but the most commonly used vacuum is intake vacuum. Intake vacuum is produced naturally and is the reason the air fuel mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber to begin with, in short without it the engine would not run.
@v8power200 Your welcome, thanks for the comment.
@groutaone I was surprised too but I don't think he ran it too long after he lost brakes and steering. Good to see you here groutaone I love your videos, clear and down to earth.
@buggsyspam Me too, learning is fun, knowledge is power. Thanks for the comment.
@wandareager Good luck and thanks for the comment.

@fastveedub I'll look into that because I was thinking the same thing as I was doing this job.

@TheScottturner Do they have an especially annoying trim level only sold there?
@HD8Track I've been using Diamond Grip for years, I'm also kind of cheep so I try very hard not to tear them if I can help it.
@h1pp1e2000 The snow part doesn't sound fun but to be honest this job wasn't all that bad. Good luck and stay warm as well as dirty.
HEY ERIC IT WAS THE POWERSTEERING PUMP THAT WAS WRONG WITH MY SAFARI.HYDROBOOST WAS BAD ALSO CAUSE THE CANASTER WAS COMPLETELY OFF .WELL THANX FOR EVERYTHING U WERE A BIG HELP!
@RamblinAround They are nice to have but a pain to work on sometimes.
@EricTheCarGuy i learn much from watching your videos havent really had much experience with japanese cars. i have worked at ford truck centers and international dealerships. just started working for a ford dealership doing automotive work and its quite a bit different from the diesel world.
@Nightspank10 Yea I showed some of those in the tool show videos, at the moment they're not in the budget but thanks for the tip.
@tchourb1 I recommend starting with bleeding the cooling system. I did a video on Diagnosing an Overheat that covers all the steps.
@midlantic1 It's been mentioned more than once and I agree.
Hi Eric just used your video to change a leaking hydroboost on my 96 yukon 6.5 diesel . everthing went well exept putting back the metal retainer for the brake pedal , thank's again for the upload
@shingleful Yea, vans are not my favorite but if you do this for a living you have to take the good with the bad.
@rleon1991 Your comment is great, thanks.
@MoToRPoLLuTioN Yes, it was commissioner Gordon.
@Michiganborn1969 I'm sure it wasn't the owner that did that but some aftermarket chop shop, scotch lock is the hallmark of that.
That was 11 years ago, but I'm glad I watched it, as I plan to put a system like this in a 63 C10 I'm building. Thank you Eric
@MrChaosmar Yea we all have out nemesis in the car world, mine is a Cadillac Notrhstar that needs head gaskets.
Love your direct honesty Eric, You call a spade a spade, Even if u show us your tired/lazy side. Ur still awesome. Thanks bud!!!!!
@Michiganborn1969 Escorts kind of suck but compared to a Fiero it's a cake walk.
@midlantic1 Not sure I understand the question.

@peektwice Yes in fact they were. Good eye.
@MoToRPoLLuTioN Yea, it's tricky some days, thanks for noticing.
@Bushougoma I've done plugs and wires before, blood was spilled, part of the job I suppose.
Excellent video! You always do a great job of filming and explaining as you go along. This vid also reminded me why I'll never buy another van.
Great video - appreciate you taking the time, i got a 1995 Astro and Hydroboost just went out and need to change it. Thanks for putting this together and getting me in the right frame of mind and start this repair.

I thought that whine was normal. I guess I was wrong. Thanks, Eric.
Draw a vacuum on the HB system, it will pull all the air out.
@Michiganborn1969 That was a common problem on that car too if I remember right.
@jasonyoungisnumber1 It may have just been condensation, if it was a leak it would have been the color of old power steering fluid.
this is an awesome video , you are easy to follow.
So glad you posted this vid. I have to change my clutch master cylinder on my car and its gonna be my first time doing that. Really helped with the camera under the dash cause I know i'll have to disconnect it from the clutch pedal. Really appreciate your hard work Eric. Keep it up.
@jesinu Don't fault the engineers, they are sometimes given almost impossible mandates.
yeah, But at least he takes the time to help educate us. May save u a fortune in the future. He's doin this out of help to those that can't afford a mechanic. So what if he hates Astro vans . He's genuinly lookin out for those that take the time to appreciate his considerate effort. THANKS ERIC!!!!
Something I'll probably never do, but never the less I enjoy learning. Thanks Eric.
@dgraycflrrcom Thanks for the tips but I'm not sure how to bench bleed the booster before installation, I think it came filled with fluid however to at least prime it. I like the tip about cleaning the lines before removal, good idea.
Mine came filled with fluid but I jumped the gun and hit the pedal before I hooked the power steering fluid hose to it and it built up pressure and blew that rubber cap off and spit it all out 🤦🏻
@BOOTYART You just want to hurt me. Probably not a bad idea as there are a couple of these out there.
@lester9521 Yes, the sign should read, "You will bleed".
@luckycraftsammy Sounds like a future video. I have some very good friends at a parts store just blocks away from the shop at KOI.
@focusonthegreen Interesting image and story. Thanks for the comment. :)
Wow.... It's very hard working with it, especially no rooms and have to disconnect more for space....well done Eric..
@h23sirlude I will admit that I'm not as familiar with domestics but I'd like to get to know them better, I got kinda board working on Honda's all the time.
Good day
This is very easy!

@COD5252 I did a video on Diagnosing an Overheat if you want to check it out for the answer to that.
Dude, I love you, LOL "did I mention I don't like working on Astro vans"
Thank you soooo much for putting this up on TH-cam , you are the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I mention I hate like working on Astro vans. You took the words out of my mouth. Good job.
@integraz32lover Yea but there sure are a lot of them out there.
