If the fusion is unstable, the personality will slowly split into their own personalities again until they unfuse or manage to remain together and slowly stabilize again.
Adding on, a fusion is like a relationship so an unstable relationship leads to an unstable fusion. Pearl and amythest don’t really get along that well, so that’s why opal didn’t really stay together that long, when stable relationships/fusions stay longer like stevonnie :D

When she sees the forced together gem shards. Make sense because she's a fusion and seeing shards forcefully melded together was pretty horrifying to her. Near the end of that episode you see the camera angles switching to either sides of her face when she speaks and the way she spoke, you could tell it was ruby and sapphire speaking and not garnet(them together)

The Stevonnie reveal absolutely blew my mind when I first saw the episode. And Garnet’s reaction is SO FREAKEN CUTE
I know right, I was shocked in happiness and loved Garnet’s reaction like a very proud mother
Stevonnie (they go by they/them pronouns canonically btw :D), according to the creator of the series Rebecca Sugar, was a metaphor for how people treat you differently when you grow up, Stevonnie’s breakdown at the dance floor was a metaphor for a panic attack with them seeing the disco ball closing in around them, and Kevin was a metaphor for sexual harassment (I.E. him pushing them to dance with him although they didn’t want it, Stevonnie saying “I’m not your baby”)
Edit - I also wanted to add that, again according to Rebecca Sugar, fusions in general are a metaphor for relationships, like a relationship between two (or more) people personified. And relationships of all kinds, sometimes romantic, sometimes platonic, sometimes familial, a partnership, sexual, etc, and that’s why sometimes fusion dances have sexual connotations to them like that moment you noticed between Pearl and Garnet while they were dancing
If fusion has a sexual connotation, then this show is advocating pedophilia. Just saying.

A fusion is a conversation. But a fusion develop their own personality based off the individual parts. They can intensify good or negative qualities. Like Opal being forgetful or too focused.
Steven’s room is the beach house. The kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, is all Steven’s, it was built for him after he was born. He also has access to Rose’s room, which is “his” Gem room too.
I’m late to say this but isn’t the red and blue one supposed to be sapphire and ruby since they both fuse to make garnet.
Looking back at this episode, it makes sense why Garnet was so happy with Steven and Connie's fusion.
The Test is one of my favorite episodes solely for Steven's choice to not let the rest know he figured out it was rigged. The first in a long line of Steven putting everyone else above himself and an absolutely beautiful moment.

HEADS UP that hulu has the ending of season 1 and the beginning of season 2 mixed up. between the episodes "Rose's Scabbard" and "The Message" should be "Open Book", "Shirt Club", "Say Uncle", and "Story for Steven" in that order. they are just filler episodes but that's the right order if you want to watch them how they were aired :P "Full Disclosure" and "Joy Ride" are the first and second episodes of season 2

@@Scootx The episodes originally aired in the hulu/hbo max order, but they were produced with the comment's order in mind. It won't affect much beyond minor continuity errors, but it's probably still a good idea to reorder them.
The better the meld between two in a fusion the more of a single new being they become.
I feel like they dance to fuse so they can coordinate as a some warm-up, but what mostly matters is that their emotions or feelings are being reciprocated in some way, because we already know that it doesn't matter if they try to dance, if they aren't getting along, it is not going to work or they are going to unfuse.
And I also think fusions are a difficult thing to explain personality-wise, because yeah, they are two or more people into one that act like one, but they are also by themselves. I think it's the kind of concept you just gotta roll with it more than trying to make it logical since it's something from the series.
The Test is one of my absolute favorite episodes. It's very under rated in my opinion. Some S1 episodes are good in that they hint at how great the show is going to be eventually, but The Test is one of like 4 or 5 episodes in season 1 that I think are really up to the show's full potential. It really shows the first signs of real maturity from Steven.

And yes Steven can enter his mom's room because he has her gem so technically it's his room. This was seen in the episode during glitch city

Fusions can be thought as three or more, the gems that fused (usually just two, sometimes more) and the fusion created. Atleast that's how I've always understood it, since they never call fusions by just the ones fused or try to talk to just one in the fusion.

Steven had access to his mother’s room Bc Steven has his mother’s gem. Anything that was hers belongs to Steven too Bc he now has her gem.
A stable fusion is just one person, but it can start to fall apart around the edges more and more and it starts to be more like people sharing a body. Fusion is all about being in sync. That's why they usually dance to get one going, because that's the easiest way to get in sync with someone.
You called it a bit in the giant woman episode when you noticed Opal unfused when they realized they didn't get the beetle they were after. They were in sync, and so one person until they got surprised and both probably felt different ways about that.

Garnets future visions explains so much about her personality, Especially her calmness but it seems like a nightmare to know of impending danger especially in situations where she sees no good outcome and just has to accept it.

this man watching steven universe for the first time helped me understand The Test episode better than I had before, and I’ve seen it countless times. it’s my favorite tv show, and i never picked up on the reversal of the gems giving steven a win to steven giving them one. so cool! humans are awesome, a stranger can watch your favorite entertainment and teach you something about it you’d never realized.

the test is a really good episode, and it was very mature of Steven to recognise that the CGs needed a win, but unfortunately it also means that Steven is learning to sacrifice his own needs for the adults in his life, something that he started doing in rose's scabbard as well.
to best describe why they talk to each other when they fuse, its like when we think and talk out loud to ourselves. kind of like the conscious and subconscious talking to each other. its one personality, but also separate. kind of like a person with multiple personalities.
also side note, the more human like form of fusion, the healthier the relationship.

Fusion dances dont have to be somthing you follow, we already saw two completely different dances in the two fusions of Opal and Sugalite, the most important part of a fusion dance is the fact you have to be feeling it.
also When a fusion is unstable, they are unsure of themselves, so they begin mentally splitting up, which results in the fusion splitting up. Also i noticed youre using "they" pronouns for Stevonnie cuz its both of them together but Stevonnie uses they/them pronouns in general, and they are also intersex and nonbinary. What I mean by stability in this- I mean either emotion stability (if a person is going through it or not), or the stability between the relationship of the people in the fusion.
A fusion is their own person, however if a person in the fusion isn't stable or aren't 100% compatible with the others, they begin to shine through. They can talk to each-other in the same body.
If two people were to fuse who hate each-other then their fusion won't have it's own voice and will look incomplete, it'll start sounding like a dragonball fusion with voices overlapping. Whoever is in control at the time will have their voice shine through.
A fusion is a manifestatoin of their relationship. A symbol for their compromise and communication

As for how fusion dances work, remember what Garnet says she is in her song Stronger Than You: meaning-wise, fusions are the personification of relationships (ie. romance, sexual, familial, friendship, can even be business aka for a practical/specific purpose, or when you just happen to share a particular emotion/feeling about a thing); identity-wise they become a singular person; but at its core, fusion is a _conversation_ between gems, and in order to have a fluid conversation, you need to be in-sync and know where you're going with it (or at least mutually understand what you're trying to achieve with it).
fusion dances don't seem to be entirely necessary nor does it need to be in a particular manner, but in order to be perfectly in-sync with each other, they dance to synchronize their styles/thoughts/flow/identities(?) and meld them into one harmonized theme. you could compare it to two musicians playing off one another in order to find where the harmony is going, then come together when they reach it and create a synchronized composition.
i feel like music theory could explain that better -- like, the whole 'knowing where the music and its "feeling" are going so you're able to play off it by ear and make it sound good'.

What follows is semi-spoilery...it isn't stated canonically, but based on deduction:
The dancing for fusion is to help break down the initial mental barriers between Gems. When two or more Gems are innately attracted to each other or mutually focused on a task, they can fuse practically spontaneously by contact; no dancing required. Conversely, if a fusion is under stress physically or mentally, it's liable to break apart into individual components (like we saw between Steven and Connie at the end.). As we saw in Giant Woman and Fusion Cuisine, the more the components differ from each other emotionally, the harder it is to create the fusion and keep it together.
If a fusion begins talking to itself between components, that's usually a bad sign because it shows that the fusion is under stress and is therefore unstable.

Together Alone was the first "serious" SU episode I had watched; before I'd only seen the two mission episodes where Steven kinda screws up, and Bubble Buddies. It didn't help that Cartoon Network's promos only emphasized the wacky parts, so I took the impression that SU was only lightweight magical shenanigans. Together Alone impressed me by its relative quietness and serious take on matters of sudden maturity and sexual harrassment, and this encouraged me to take the trouble to take a second look at this series.
Stevonnie is one of two characters that are drawn personally by Rebecca Sugar or done under her direct supervision; the other is Rose Quartz.
Steven's middle name is Quartz, he mentioned it several episodes ago in So Many Birthdays.

(Im forgetting if they ever say this in the series but...) I think fusion can happen anytime, doesn't have to dance, doesn't have to have consent, but the more connected the gems that will fuse, the more stable the fusion, that's why they dance before fusing in the earlier episodes (Not really a spoiler but spoiler alert i guess: they don't dance before fusing that much in later episodes) If gems fuse with consent + with a dance the fusion will be stable cause the gems are connected in a way, if there's no dance it's still stable (as long as it has consent) but not as stable as with a dance so when they have to fuse in a rush they can just skip the dance. However, if the fusion doesn't give consent or one of the gems is showing that they don't want to fuse, the fusion will be unstable SPOILER ALERT but two gems in a later episode fuse (Im not specifying which gems) but even though they did dance and the two gems technically agreed to fuse, one of the gems deep down didn't want to fuse so the fusion was unstable. Another spoiler: In another later episode we are shown that gems can actually fuse with corrupted gems but cause the corrupted gem can't dance or give consent in any way, the fusion will always be unstable
