    This is one of the first comparison reviews I've seen that doesn't get all "high and mighty" on the copy. What you said about personally owning both clones and authentics - and enjoying them both - is the same with me. Some of these clones are very, very good (for what they are.)

      Same. One of my EDC carry knives is a $25 clone of the Bastinelli Picoeur. The fit and finish aren't as nice, but I've had no trouble with the steel. As someone who cooked professionally for years and has thousands of dollars invested in my kitchen knives alone, not even getting into my carry knives, and hundreds of hours of researching different steels, how they behave at different heat treat levels, and everything relevant... There's just no reason for the Bastinelli to cost six times as much as the clone. The steel (N690) is good but nothing particularly special. In the kitchen knife world its comparable to VG10, which is common on upper range but still budget stainless steel knives. I'd still rather have a coated D2 blade - stainless isn't worth the sacrifices, IMO. The concept is good, using a scalpel as an "oh crap" knife, but again it's nothing special. It's literally just a 140mm long, 1.5mm thick piece of CNC machined steel. The material cost is maybe $5 per knife.

      @@willcresson8776 I have an authentic overpriced Bastinelli Picouer. I was enamored with the marketing and quickly regretted it when I received what was nothing more than a sharpened medium-sized flathead screwdriver. What a sucker I was to think it was something amazing, lol. I then saw the same thing (copy) on Amazon for $15.

    @2:02 that twanging in that knife is easily fixed. I have the same knife. Simply open it up and take some heavy duty packing grease on the tip of your finger and force some inside and around the spring and the cut-out in the handle that the spring sits in. It doesn't take a lot, but make sure the spring has some grease inside of it. The grease acts as a vibration eliminator on the spring. Don't worry, the grease stays put, it won't make its way to the other side of the thing the spring is hooked onto. Just wipe up any extra grease before putting it back together and you've got a perfectly dead click sound, no spring noise AT ALL.

    I just bought a replica microtech for like $40, the model being Combat Troodon. But I wouldnt trust my life with it, its more of a fidget tool, something to cut stuff with, open boxes and what not. I guess the reason people buy replica OTFs is because a lot of em just want to have the cool actuation and the form factor of the knife

    • @randallscott-key802
      @randallscott-key802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Would you REALLY trust your life to a real MT Toodon? Trust your life to a knife where the only possible difference is slightly beefier blade locking wedges. Both real and fake can "misfire" right when they need to work. If misfired, both require grabbing the flopping blade and yanking it out to lock into the forward lock. For CQB, both knives should be employed as stabbing weapons, and sinking to the hilt in a human torso, or punching through the ribs is pretty easy. So what exactly do you think the "real" Troodon brings to the table that's "better" than the cheap knockoff?
      I would absolutely trust my cheap Halo V. It's got almost an inch longer blade, is SA which means it deploys hard and even if blocked as it comes out, will continue to extend once the block is clear. The release button is also the blade lock, and it's a massive bolt 4/10ths of an inch across (10mm). When that blade locks out, it's locked and the Thick, Tanto point blade will easily crush through ribs and while not as long as I prefer in a fighting knife, 4.6" certainly beats 3.5".
      On the other hand I have a "cheap" $14 torsion spring driven side-opener that projects a 5.7" blade that dwarfs anything from MT. The torsion spring drive means that even if the blade is blocked when the release is pressed, when the blade clears the block, the torsion spring will still drive the blade around into lock....something leaf-spring powered knives will not do...it they fail to deploy, like a DA OTF, the blade will just flop until manually rotated to lock. When closed, both my Halo V and the 5.7" blade side-opener are the same length, yet one gives me another inch of blade combined with thick steel liners and bolsters, and a massive hinge....which means far stronger than even the REAL deal, rip-off MT line.
      Also, the serial number on my "fake" Halo V is the same on hundreds of others as opposed to being dumb enough to actually tote around a knife with a serial number, that cost a fortune, yet you might have to toss or "throw down" depending on the situation. Kind of hard to tell the cops the knife sticking out of the dead guy was HIS, when they can run the serial number and the doods at MT will happily tell them YOUR NAME from the registration card you so dutifully sent in so they'd honor your warranty!

    I can only own clones as I live in the uk so I only risk £50 incase customs takes it so I don’t risk hundreds. Never had an issue from China they all come through. I've got two of em. They claim to be D2 steel and having sharpened a bunch of other knives it really feels like they're being honest. It's not as soft as the stainless steel knives you see on Amazon. As long as you treat it like a pocket knife and aren't trying to nail it into a plank or baton down half a tree it'll be fine. I've had one of em as my daily driver for 3 years. Given the real ones are usually $400 plus, you're paying 10% of the price for like 80% of the quality. People really underestimate how good these chinese clones are getting.

    • @human_bot_
      @human_bot_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, these are not even close to 80% of the quality. Have you ever seen how a microtech is made? It takes weeks of labor with the best materials available. These Chinese knock offs probably don't have even 10% of the quality.

    I have 3 OTFs 1)a $30 Lightning OTF 2)a $70 RavenCrest Tactical that I over paid for compared to DH Gate prices but it was worth it to me for the quick shipping and RavenCrest Tactical is based in the US and gives a “Lifetime warranty”(or for however long that business exists) but apparently they will replace or fix them with no questions asked.its a clear step up from the Lightning OTF but certainly not Microtech quality,definitely worth what I paid 3)an authentic turquoise Microtech Ultratech with black hardware and black blade.it has a single edge drop point blade in 204p steel,it costed $300...I personally refuse to buy knock offs,it’s one thing if they copy the design but if it actually has the company they stole from’s name and logos printed on it,I can’t do it...that’s just me,I don’t care what the next man does but I don’t do knock offs...I wonder how well these clones will hold up to the torture tests we see the Ultratech being put through in videos?..I gotta admit,OTFs in general are much more durable than I originally expected..my $30 Lightning OTF make a perfect work knife.went I bought it,I got it moreso as a fidget toy to play around with than an actual knife.it has more blade play than my other 2 and it makes the spring noise when fired..it is clearly a fairly cheaply made knife,originally I figured I could probably easily force the blade back down into the handle.at just $30 I really didn’t care if I broke it or not so I stabbed it into the side of a barn several times and the lock up never gave.that $30 Lightning OTF was my first OTF,I’ve fired it much more than my other 2 and it’s the only one I have that has never misfired...it makes a great work knife because 1)handed operations 2)it’s surprisingly durable 3)at $30 I won’t be out much if I break it,lose it or someone steals it..I personally think all 3 are worth what I paid..if you want high quality materials,buy a Microtech,Benchmade,Guardian Tactical,Heretics,Brian Tighe,etc..you can get Vespa and No Limit Chinese made OTFs in quality materials for around $150-$200..if you want something well made in cheaper materials go with something like RavenCrest Tactical or their equivalents on DH Gates with a 440c stainless steel blade or a D2 blade...or for $30 you can get a Lightning OTF with cheap cast aluminum painted handles and a 440c blade with a bit more blade play.its certainly nothing fancy but it functions surprisingly well and is a great starting point

      TLDR

    • @randallscott-key802
      @randallscott-key802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Halo V from DhGate: $34, locks up solid, no rattles, no wobbles, fires hard because it's a SA OTF which means it's applying forward spring force all the time so even if the blade is blocked on deployment, when it clears the block, the firing spring will still extend it fully open. The downside is it must be manually retracted, but that's what makes it a serious combat carry choice, along with a half-way decent 4.6" blade.
      As for any "honor" toward manufacturers, that's a fool's mindset. Ain't nothing inside a MT knife that makes it worth $400 or $500, and that includes the "engineering" which is pretty "mature" technology. MT is simply gouging the market for all it can based on the current "tacti-cool" craze where everyone envisions himself as a special ops urban commando and is willing to fork over big money for bragging rights...."I paid $500 for this knife so it's better than your $20 knife" and other such tripe. As for people making claims about the quality of blade steel...just because MT prints it on the blade doesn't make it any more legit than if the Chinese print it on the blade! How many TH-cam knife reviewers are metallurgical experts and have the equipment to identify the alloy used in a particular blade? Pretty close to NONE I'd say. Besides, ALL stainless steel is "good steel" despite ridiculous marketeering claims otherwise!
      But I'm NEVER going to pay more for a knife than I would for a gun...that's "MY" rule I guess. Not when I can buy a veritable box full of knives for the gouge of one MT, and every one of the cheap knives will hold up as well or better than the MT! I bought a Chinese made coil spring stiletto for $9! It has a solid, 4" bayonet blade captured between twin stainless steel liners with SS bolsters locked by screws. Because it's coil spring driven the blade is being "powered" completely through the deployment arc, which means even if the blade is blocked on opening, once clear, the spring will continue to swing the blade into lock...just like a single-action OTF. The knife came razor sharp and opens with 100% reliability, and if I ever have to use it in CQB will no-doubt create several dozen puncture wounds in short order.... for NINE DOLLARS! If I have to drop it somewhere I won't suffer separation anxiety, NOR will I being tossing away a knife with an idiotic SERIAL NUMBER on it!
      I have an "expensive" Chinese Leveretto that set me back a whopping $30 that is immaculately built and finished with black horn scales. It's polished and smooth, and the lever spring kicks the blade out with boring reliability...beautiful knife.

In real life nobody who pays for their own stuff is going to deliberately abuse a $400 DA OTF knife, but then again, nobody with any sense is even going to buy one!

    To all the knife people out there...
    I like a little of everything. I have both genuine Microtech Ultra Tech's and cloned versions of them. The clones are INCREDIBLE QUALITY! So much so, that I sold one of my genuine Microtech's to get the multiple clones that I have. I've never looked back, or regretted it. I'm talking the better clones, not the cheapest one you click on. The Clones I have are of equal quality, if not BETTER than the originals. Go figure. I use the hell out of my clones EVERYDAY! I'm not gentle with them.They hold up just fine. If you want to spend $400 on a knife that is CNC machined, and not built by hand, then go for it. I'll spend that money, with a little bit more money added to it and purchase a quality hand gun. As for blade hardness, the clones are good to go, or at least the ones that I have. I tested them at work. Between 57-59 on the Rockwell "C" scale. good enough for me. There are over 30 scales in Rockwell testing. There is also Mohs hardness tests, and Brinell hardness tests. Go figure. None of my clones make the sound "Sproing" when fired either! My genuine one does though. I took it apart and greased the spring. ...problem solved.
    I'll bet money that Michrotech has LOTS of their components if not all of them manufactured in China, and then puts the finish on them, and assembles them here in the states, then throws on a ridiculously high price tag.
    I say get the knife that fits your wallet, or the one that fits a ignorant, arrogant, ego and roll with it. Lots of great knives out there. One other thing for the people that say I don't support American company's by purchasing clones... I'll give you a perfect example of ignorance on your part...
    General Motors sells a GM product called the Buick Envision. ITS 100% Chinese manufactured!!! It was parked in front of Costco. VERY WELL BUILT! $48,000. Now the 2020 Buick LaCrosse!!! Where are those American jobs and loyalty ??? huh??? Suck it. Its a global market.

    Wow first min of the video $60 Chinese "inferior" knife performs flawlessly and even sounds like it deploys with slightly more force/authority, while a $300-$500 real "superior" designed knife has a failure, which in a real life and death situation could have cost you your life. Its hard not to form biases after that, but I will refrain from drawing any conclusion at this point, despite the cost of the real one, and the "kaputnik" deployment is starting to leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

It's not about being "high and mighty". It's about not supporting thieves who steal intellectual property and produce literal junk compared to the real thing. If you created a product that was like no other, would you care if some half assed company built a crappy version of your product and used your product name to make money, all while selling a cheap version? The Chinese knock off is most definitely inferior in every single way. That is a literal fact.

    I just can't bring myself to pay 3 to 4 times as much for an item that doesn't do a damn bit more than the cheaper version does.
    A knife is a simple tool... and even "cheap" steel will hold an edge a fairly long time.
    And when it gets dull, is also relatively easy to resharpen.
    Now, if you want "bragging rights" and "safe queens", buy the high-dollar knives... but if you want a "user" knife for cutting boxes, opening mail, and generally making people jump out of their skin... go with the less expensive versions.
    Oh, and if you're gonna use a knife for survival or "combat", go with a fixed blade, not a folder. They're much stronger. Also... try to remember that you aren't John Wick, and will probably be dead before you even know you're in a "knife fight".
    ( You'll likely never see the blade that kills you, if the person using it knows what they're doing. )

      Wait, What? So why did you buy the genuine ultra tech? Shouldn't IT be your primary knife since it's supposed to be so "stwang and bwave"? What kind of work do you do that you "need" a DA OTF knife "as a beater"? Wouldn't the garden variety, grab rack "clone" Buck knife that's nearly indestructible be better for work?

      Lol, they don't even compare to the real thing. To say otherwise is just plain ignorant. There is no comparison, at all. Go watch how a microtech is made. Weeks of labor with the best materials compared to a stolen knock off made in a sweat shop out of whatever scrap metal they can scrounge up. Save up and buy the real thing. Buying "clones" is just another way of saying you support thieves, sweat shops, poor quality, and are too cheap to support the actual company and buy a real quality product

Still loved it and carried it for years without any issues.. have friends who have gotten the higher end clones in recent years that actually came with better edges and much smoother action with tighter lockup..
