One of the things I appreciate about Pokémon Arceus was that trade evolutions was optional. They made an item that allows you to evolve your Graveler, Hunter, Machoke, etc. I really hope that doesn't go away.
The thing that I'm most concerned about them removing is the move pool. It was so handy to be able to switch to whatever move set I needed for any given situation. So handy in fact it'll be straight up frustrating if they remove it.
@@IceBlueStarCat ok im a new fan to the series (first game was BDSP but fully completed PLA) but I'm pretty sure that Legends tells what the move does. It shows damage, accuracy, if its effective or not, and the description that may note whats special about the move.
@@Beadlesstorh It's not a nitpick. OP was talking about having access to all of your moves without having to go to a move relearner like previous titles. It's an amazing quality of life change.
@@Beadlesstorh how is fast switching between moves without having to fly half way across the region to some old guy to change them for rare objects you get by random not a big deal?
@@paullossypaulplossy It's not only that, but it also has egg moves without having to go to a breeder (Luxrays elemental fangs as an example), so it saves multiple trips to multiple people.
Re: the “cold catch” system, I think it would be really cool to add that to a safari zone of sorts for the newer games. I don’t think they’ll do it, but it goes for that “balance” that you talk about
@@Dragon_Screamer yeah im pretty sure they have tilesets with common tiles in the same place on the set like grass so switching doesn't change anything on both tilesets
tbh i wouldn't say most places, just some. well, more specifically, there were only a couple in gen 1, and i suppose there were more in gen 2. haven't seen any in sapphire, and i'm doing my first playthrough ever now. When I was a kid i quit after gen 1 because i put so much work into my card collection and stuff and i almost "had them all" then they came out with another couple hundred pokemon, was so frustrated lol.
The reason I personally like the "cold-catching" of Arceus is honestly because I don't like having to go through tons and tons of battles. It just drains my party's health, and requires there to always be a rest area nearby that you go back to over and over. So being able to avoid or minimize fights by catching or attacking pokemon from behind is a huge time saver.
This and I also like it because it incentivized me to actually catch Pokémon. I have no interest in catching Pokémon in the older games because it feels like more work than it’s worth. Unless I want it to be on my team, I rarely catch a Pokémon in the old games.
It’ll be neat if Pokémon slowly regain HP and PP over time. Very gradual, but if you’re exploring and you have a guy in the red who can’t do anything, they’re just dead weight for who knows how long until you can properly heal again.
@@lamegamertime But you never have to run back or always have a rest area near by. You can do an entire route realistically without resting and if you use items you can go much further still. Are you the type who avoids battles deliberately? That behavior typically creates your situation. Also quests where you give away a Pokemon still exist. Trading Pokemon.
The way I see it PLA pulled Pokemon out of a nosedive (in terms of quality/freshness), but S/V have to land it on the runaway; it will be spectacular if they succeed, but devastating if they fail
@@SuperJoshy1406 if gamefreak gives a split evolution to one starter in a generation , then they'd need to give split evolutions to the rest of the starters in the same generation to make it fair
Yeah, my heart wants to pick it too, but after the whole Popplio not being a clown disaster followed by the Incineroar let down, when I didn't get myself spoiled, I just have to know the evolutions before I pick, I hope they stop with the bipedal furrybait starters, we have enough.
@@fraserodonnell7618 "why is it that it was going to happen" Im sorry, but I dont understand what that is supposed to mean. Im probably also picking Sprigatito, but if its bipedal and the fire starter turns out better, I'll switch to it without hesitation.
@@fraserodonnell7618 Its Pocket Monsters, not Pocket Humanoids, I dont have a problem with bipedal starters in general, I love Sceptile, Typhlosion, Charizard, Infernape and even Quajutsu, but its just getting out of hand, a Spylizard could've looked so much better than that 007 postured thing with a damn sniper rifle, not to talk about the second literal furry bunny, Incineroar is nice, yes, but its so much 'wrestler' and so little 'big cat'.
I'm sold on Quaxley myself. Also, I'd prefer the cold-catching mechanic from Arceus to come back wholesale. Or at least for battles in Scarlet/Violet to be more efficient than traditional Pokemon titles. Arceus felt like it respected my time, and I want that to continue
Really well put, totally agree with this. It may not be necessary for the stealth catching mechanics to return, but Legends seemingly had a design philosophy of respecting the player's time throughout the entire game, whether it was the ability to change moves on the fly or catching like 5 pokemon in quick succession without going through a battle menu. That philosophy is what should return, no matter how they do it.
Arceus wasn't afraid to throw hands properly, and I appreciated that. I can see cold catching as "unsportsmanlike" in modern age titles. Pokemon also don't attack when you run away, so it seems mutual.
Technically not even the 2D games were seamless. Parts of them might have been, but there's still lots of gates between areas so they can load different maps. Even Sun & Moon had to load between areas sometimes without even using gates.
so? I don't understand why people care so much about the world being technically completely seamless or not, you can have the exact same open-world gameplay in a game wether or not all areas load seamlessly or not. Like GTA Vice city isn't less open world because they had a loading screen inbetween the 2 island
@@stevencraeynest7729 I'm not saying it's a huge deal to me or that the lack of it bothers me. It's just the fact that this is a true series first which makes it all the more important that this game is doing it.
I adored the fact that you could call out your team to interact with them and even talk to them. (I'm not sure if it was just a cosmetic feature or it actually upped friendship, but) I'm so hoping it returns as an actual mechanic to help up friendship with your team. It was too cute seeing my team talk to each other and have their own conversations and it made them feel more alive and more like my Pokemon rather than some bits of code I picked up off the side of the road. Now if only we could finally get a proper following feature and be able to ride our own Pokemon HM or otherwise because I am so tired of locked in ride pokemon. Let's Go had it and I'm feeling deprived.
As much as I love the dodge roll mechanic of Legends, I really doubt they're going to bring it back for Gen 9. Legends' whole plot was focused around the idea that "Pokemon are horrifying monsters and can seriously hurt you if you aren't careful", so they needed to have a system that really showcased that. In the modern day setting of these games, people aren't scared of Pokemon or treat them as dangerous monsters, so I don't think there's going to be a need for it. I could be wrong and they keep it in there for you to roll stealthily into grass, but I don't think there will be the intense boss battles where you need to roll to survive like in Legends
the "cold catch" mechanic plays on this too. by making avoiding battle not just an option but often desirable (since there is a lot of risk to encountering pokémon in arceus), it makes you hide in the grass and sneak around a lot, really giving you the sense of fear of pokémon that the characters are meant to have. thematically it makes sense, the gameplay mechanics seem to be broadly built around trying to get this sense across, and i think i would be fine not having them in future games since as you say, people have come to feel safe around pokémon
Out of all possible things that are in Scarlet and Violet, the following or riding is the least one I want. The only Thing I want is a true open world, gyms in any order, going to places I shouldnt going, because there are too strong Pokemon, ect.
The Protagonists are bland, but you'll probably be able to customize their outfits like in SwSh. Compared to the other protagonists' base designs however, they are quite disappointing.
I’m going to assume that the fact the protagonists aren’t much to look at is a) it’s a school uniform and b) there will probably be more customisation than ever before, so does it really matter what we look like at the start?
@@sansprobus7209 Well no, every protagonist even beyond X and Y has kept the same tradition of giving them distinct, interesting designs. People never complained about the blandness of Moon, Victor, and Gloria simply because they’re interesting to look at. Gloria has this nice looking Coat Dress on, Victor has his funny Beanie and massive Backpack, and Moon’s hat is Iconic enough to be one of Pikachu’s Alts in Smash. Sure these avatars are basically meant to be there until you gain customization options, but keep in mind that these are the characters that will represent the face of this generation of Pokémon; we all can remember during the beginning of Gen 8 when Gloria blew up the internet with Scotland jokes. These protagonists look like School Kid NPCs that you’d fight on route 3. I don’t believe anyone remembers the school kid Designs from any past Gen all that well.
I've always said that a way the Legends Arceus system of catching could be implemented in future games is by bringing back the safari zone, where the whole focus is on catching Pokemon. They could have the "cold catching" thing solely a function in there, and you're unable to use your own Pokemon in there, using that Legends Arceus feature without changing the normal gameplay!
I feel like something they could do is keep the legends arceus catching system, but just for a safari zone type thing because they are basically the same in practice with the safari zones having the random encounters
Some things about Legends that I really love (that no one really talks too much about) that I hope carrying over to the main series: Choosing to evolve a Pokemon - in Legends, it was such an improvement to deliberately choose when to evolve (when criteria is met, i.e. level) versus your Pokemon bugging you to evolve every time they level up or give them an everstone to hold Not Needing to Trade to Evolve - I feel like having some Pokemon only evolve when traded is a bit archaic and seemed like a novelty with earlier generations, but just having a item to evolve them was SOOOOOO much better. I wouldn't mind if it took more effort to get items to evolve and trading them would be a shortcut. In Legends I caught a shiny Machoke and was SOOOOOO nice that I could just use the link cable item to evolve to Machamp

I don't know if the "cold-catching", research angle will be gone in Scarlet & Violet. Gamexplain had a really cool theory that the main characters are students in a Pokémon academy of sorts, allowing Game Freak to work in the research angle again and have it make sense. I think it'd be cool, and a breath of fresh air.
It's very cool! I also really like it, but one thing that did bother me was that catching pokemon felt like a little less of an accomplishment than in the main generation games. Being able to just throw pokeballs at everything was fun, but it led to me having like 50 of the same pokemon. I really hope they keep it, but I think it would be awesome if they balanced it somehow. So like for example... if they decrease the catch rate, so that cold-catching has a much lower chance of working. But you can still attempt a throw before challenging the pokemon in battle. And if they pull back on that mechanic, but keep it then they could also keep research tasks, but also just maker there be slightly less of them to accommodate for cold-catching being slightly more difficult. There are probably other ways they can combine things too! I for sure hope they don't drop arceus mechanics entirely.
@Micah Fryslie The grit system of releasing pokemon to get grit items was kind of an incentive to release any duplicate pokemon that you dont need, but without explaining it it wasnt very obvious without just releasing a bunch of pokemon to see
@@caramelmousse8509 Yeah!, that was a cool mechanic. Since they focused more on catching, I also thought it was really neat the way they incentivized that. It could be neat if they brought that over to VS or at least a similar mechanic.
Thing i'd like to see in these games: - Cold catching - Dual type starters - A good story - A good character customization - Ridable pokemon - Cool new pokemon design - Something like the pokecamp
I'd rather have a secret base over Pokémon camping. But I want the bases you could build in gen. 3, not the lame watered down version the Pokémon team implemented in the Diamond and Pearl remakes.
Loved the whole video, but my favorite part was right at the start. “ Scarlet and Violet… another obvious combination that I couldn’t guess” right there with you Arlo 😂
i feel like i’m in the exact same boat with pokemon, and if scarlet and violet discard what PLA brought to the table, i’m gonna be so disappointed. it really is the potential, and i would LOVE to see a whole video on it from you. p.s. i like quacksley because of his great hair/hat :)
I'm excited to play the games, but I'm not too confident about all those Arceus improvements being carried over to Scarlet and Violet. We should still think of them as follow ups to Sword and Shield, not Arceus.
But in return you're getting a true Open-world instead of a 'fake' (pseudo) one? Add to that return of abilities that nearly everyone complained about PLA _not_ actively having and for sure at least 6 Towns complete with their resident Gyms - and I for one am not complaining one bit thanksy muchy! I think people of these days don't know how lucky they actually are. I honestly truly thought that We would see true Open-World Pokémon until the Switch2 was announced! This gem is just a total delightful bonus!!

I feel I'm the opposite of most when it comes to the starters. Lots of people saying they like them all but for me this is the first time where I don't particularly like any of them. We'll see after their final evos are revealed, but it might be the first time I box my starter.
I’m hoping that the starters’ evolutions they’re dual typed and that they don’t make said evolutions too human (Even if I love Incineroar and Greninja)
@@IceBlueStarCat I think the issue is because it's kinda strange to see a cat go from being a cat to a buff guy, or a Lizard turning into James Bond. Personally I like Humonoid pokemon like Machamp or Slaking, but they've been a bit overdone with starters lately
@@IceBlueStarCat I would have loved all the Sword/shield starter designs if they were on all fours instead of two. I really don't like the humanoid designs. It just feels like they are their own intelligent species that shouldn't be kept in ball instead of a monster pet you fight with.

I do plan on waiting to see final evolutions/typings before I make my decision though, as much as I like Incineroar as its own Pokémon, it wasn't what I wanted from Litten.
Wow, you same the same thoughts as I do! I thought that gen V's starers were mostly good, but Oshawatt is a mixed bag for me. After that, there is, at best, one starter that I like, with the others inspiring apathy or distaste. However, I love all of these guys, and it is nice to see another Quaxly fan! I hope that he stays earnest and tidy.
The trailer looked really good im actually genuinely hyped for the games. Though I want to keep my expectations in check just in case some bad news or "omens" come out like with sword and shield.
I wish they made the petting and play/treats actions from the DS games available in the over world. That would really add an element of affection back into the game
Awesome video. I’m actually interested in seeing how this generation turns out. Sword and Shield didn’t gave me much hopes for the next thing, but I do hope this turns out better than expected. Also, there is a video glitch on 3:11. Idk why that happened but it’s there, it didn’t bother me that much though.
I'm excited for the new games, but I'm tempering my expectations. Considering the time frame of its release with Arceus, the games were definitely made along side each other, meaning they absolutely have had no time to take the feedback from the changes made in Arceus and apply it to S/V. Because of this, I would not be surprised if its a more standard Pokemon experience. They would have been gambling on the reception of Arceus if any of the bigger changes make it in to S/V.
Honestly Legends sometimes gave me a run for my money as I was taking massive damage from Pokémon moves that my Pokémon’s type should resist. It has been the only game I’ve had my whole team of 6 faint before. If they keep that up imo it doesn’t need a difficulty setting 😂😅
Quaxly is an underrated gem and I love everything about him. He's gonna be an amazing starter, and everyone is gonna hop on the hype train once they realize that, but let it be known: I was on the Quaxly Hype Train first!
4:08 "Fuecoco" *Shows Quaxly* As for my opinion, I absolutely LOVE Quaxly! Not only do I find this sailor duckling cute, but according to their entry they are "earnest and tidy", so I love the fact that it's outright stated to just be a polite lil' guy!
The battle system is terrible lmao. Although I enjoyed it it would be terrible for competitive and even for the harder battles in game. Speed affecting turns make speedy Pokémon (which are already really good) ridiculously busted. And the turn by turn system removes any amount of thought in the battle system. It’s just do the best move and hope it hits. Because they can’t switch or anything when you attack or get hit. Because they will make their move AFTER you switch instead of while your opponent makes a move
Honestly, same. L:A did a lot right, but the battle system was not one of them. Speed basically being buffed to extremes, and the styles you can use to (kinda) influence it. I feel not too much features should be carried over from L:A in general, because it is a very different type of game. I love the catching mechanic, but I can't imagine that being nearly as fun in a mainline Pokémon game where I only catch a handful of Pokémon during a main playthrough anyway, and I *really* do not want research tasks in a game that isn't focussed primarily around that, though that's just my opinion.
There’s not a ton of depth to the battle system honestly. You K.O your opponent, then the new Pokémon K.O’s you because they move first, repeat cycle I want the system to stay in Legends games
Totally agree. Hisuian Electrode quickly became my ace due to speed + paralysis letting me start with 2-3 extra turns every battle. I can see stuff like that becoming a huge problem in competitive.
Yeah, I reeeeaaally hope they never bring back that battle system for any Pokemon game including any future Legends games. I always dreaded whenever a character forced me into a battle due to how unfun they were
PLENTY of things to be wary of: - still hate the dual releases, so unnecessary in the modern gaming hellscape - they need to be clear about the Dex, no lies & be honest about it - allow EXP Share to be toggled per individual Pokemon - allow tutorial skipping - hopefully a good story with no condescending writing or intrusive dialogue - have higher level Pokemon be catchable with obedience to balance - integrate the moves & evolution systems from Legends Arceus - make affection optional again, mandatory affection is game breaking - make battles snappier, no constant updates on weather/status/affection/etc - good framerate & optimization overall - include good post-game content - break conventions, we don't need Team Villain or legendaries in stories, mix it up Other than all these concerns, I'm cautiously optimistic about Gen 9.
Yah I think that’s a sign of possibly having too high of expectation there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 (at least for Pokemon, any other game then yah completely valid but with Pokemon that has a repatriation of not meeting a lot of modern day standards 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️) You might want too cut at least half of that down by half. If they succeed with most of that half with SV then you can bring the other points back for the next Pokemon games. 😂😂😂😂😂
Screw it, might as well give my stupid opinions, discussion is fun: -dual releases are a pretty cool part of the franchise. It adds a nice bit of personality to the games by making trading mandatory to complete the pokedex. Version exclusives are great because they are so easy to trade for online, (on the gts that is. It was practicly made for trading versions exclusives.) Trade evolutions are iffy online because people can just leave with your pokemon without trading back, (which was thankfully solved with the linking cable in PLA) but trading version exclusives is easy because both people just want the other version exclusives and don't want to trad back. Also, they never really encourage you to buy both games. The only people that really buy both games are the hard-core pokemon fans and youtubers and such, but they know they are wasting money on it and might even like it. -Honestly have no idea what you mean there. They were pretty clear about the natdex not being in SS or in pretty much any new games anymore which sucks, but a get it. Unless you mean dex entries being consistent and less contradictory, but that is kind of neat as it shows that professors from different regions disagreeing about things. (Also it is just retconing mistakes, not really a mistake in and of itself). -I think you just mean the old exp share item coming back which definitely is necessary. It should be able to be toggled off with the old exp share item coming back. -YEP. I don't know skipping tutorials and other cutscenes/dialogue isn't already in the games. -Story definitely needs to be better. The BW story was phenomenal and I hope they go back to something that good again. I get that they have the condescending writing for kids playing, but that's a stupid reason since kids just skip through the dialogue anyways. -This is just a bad idea. Having obedience problems for pokemon you have caught yourself would be a nightmare and would just make people never want to catch them. Plus, it would be terrible for new players who think they have just caught a stronger pokemon, but be incredibly frustrated when it doesn't attack and they don't know why. I think what would be better is just better level balancing so wild pokemon are just higher level normally. -moves and evos from PLA are great. It makes it easier to set up your pokemon how you want it. -Yeah, affection bonuses should be able to be toggled off. They make battles too easy. -Yeah, there should be an option to toggle a "pro-mode" or something that just streamlines the battle process and reduces clutter. -Well obviously yeah, the games should run well. -100% this. Post-games in more recent games have definitely been lacking in more recent games. PLA was great with Volo's twist at the end with Cynthia's team and Giratina, but outside of that battle, the post-game could have been better. They should have something like in BW where multiple towns were post-game or even the coveted God of all post-games, the delta episode of ORAS, but even something like one new route in SM is better, since in SS there was absolutely nothing. Post-game also needs to be filled out with stuff that isn't even story related like contests or the pokeathlon. They could have a true battle frontier or even just a tower with different modes reminiscent of battle frontier modes, instead of just basic battling like the battle tower in SS. -I mean they kind of already do this stuff. SM didn't use gyms and SS didn't have an elite four. Those weren't good examples but shaking up the formula is great. Having something else than an evil team would be cool, but they would need to have something else fill its place besides just more random trainers. They should definitely keep the legendaries as part of the stories however. The story doesn't need to revolve around them, but they should still be in there so the story still involves pokemon. In all, yeah, good suggestions. I don't think these are dealbreakers by any means, but they are generally some good improvements that would make the series much better.
@@andrewg.3281 Selling multiple versions of the same game to trick people into spending more so they don't miss out sounds like a scam Activision or Ubisoft would sink to, not Pokemon. Before the series included online features (started in Gen 4, 2006) it just made sense but now, saying it's for 'interactivity' sounds like something a PR rep would say if questioned about still doing it. Not to mention habitual/compulsive people who have legit issues with spending or collecting. It's a modern gaming scam, pure & simple. Honesty with the Dex means not lying about cut Pokemon never returning thru DLC or updates, which they claimed for SwSh only to add them in updates anyway. Either they lied, changed their minds, took note of the backlash, or figured a programming trick, take your pick. Obedience already works for overleveled traded Pokemon, & people can always breed them for a baby that will obey. Some challenge/fun could also be derived from using Pokemon that won't listen. It beats not even being able to catch them AT ALL. EXP Share should be hybrid of old & new, allowing you to choose which individual Pokemon get experience or not (example: setting Pokemon 3, 4, & 6 to gain experience while turning it off for 2 & 5). This is what I meant, a best of both that allows everyone to level up their teams the way THEY want.
I really liked how the catching/battling system in PLA works, chucking balls and berrys and such, so i really hope they keeps that in, its so fun and letting your pokemon out to chat is great
I’m so uncertain about this game. I’m still not thrilled about it happening this year. I still don’t think it got enough time and it should’ve been 2023 at the earliest. Plus, they have to be crunching over there to get this out this year
Would I love for it to have more time sure but I don’t get why it’s surprising. They’ve been doing every 3 years for a new gen for a while now it’s not shocking to think they’d stick to it. Saying Arceus made you think otherwise isn’t a super solid argument either bc it’s very likely arceus was intended to come out sooner but was delayed due to the pandemic. Even adding BDSP into the mix adds up to the normal amount of games that come out between gens it’s just all so close together because there was a good portion of time lost due to the pandemic. That being said though i’ll always be worried about the quality of a pokémon game bc they have proved i should be lol
@@LinkMountaineer It still would have been better to have it come out later to check for quality control. lock in your decision now and attempt to protect yourself from learning what they evolve into so that you can find out whether you made the right choice when you have the game and finally evolved your starter.
When new starter are revealed i usually have a preference, but i always wait the final evos. Also, i always wait till i see the cover legendaries to choose the version i will pick
"I don't want to pick the grass kitty, because I don't want it to turn into a weird kitty-human." "I don't want to pick the duck, because I don't want it to turn into a weird duck-human". That really goes to show, doesn't it? Maybe Gamefreak should stop turning their adorable marketable animals into weird, creepy humanoids with built-in human careers like soccer player or pro-wrestler or spy. Maybe their animals should just stay animals. That's my opinion anyway. Then again I think Inciniroar and Greninja are super duper popular so hey, what do I know.
I love the duck design. In a sense I could see his evolution going two ways. One, i could see it develop into a large sailor-esque creature with a fighting element almost like poliwrath with poliwag. Or two, he straight up evolves into a captain with a bit of a JoJo feel and a furred jacket with possibly a psychic element to it. Either way I need it.
You can really tell how burnt we all are from weird starter evolution choices. I can't put all my love into one of these cuties without some confirmation that it wont turn into a weird humanoid abomination!
I usually pick the water starter, so I'll probably pick Quaxley, but Fuecoco looks pretty cool too. Will have to look at the final evolutions first before I decide.
Everybody's talking about how excited they are for the game but I dunno after SwSh, the DP remakes, and PLA its become really hard to be excited for anything Pokemon related, especially SV because it being announced not even a year after PLA came out makes it very clear that Game Freak's higher-ups do not care. Why yes I am here to rain on your parade, but do not forget that this game will most definitely be made on crunch time like the past five games and it kind of feels like the fanbase collectively forgets that every single time a new pair of games are announced.
I really hate seeing this argument time and time again. Please do some actual research on how game development works. Multiple projects can be worked on at once. Nothing is rushed and it’s not a crunch.
I mean the crunch time argument is a shot in the dark, and it would be nice to know what the commenter doesn't like about Arceus, but I feel like SwSh and BDSP were so widely disliked that I'm mostly in agreement. With SwSh having no story and BDSP having no creativity, I'm more excited about Arlo finally becoming a Pokemon fan than I am about what the next games might be.
@@LinkMountaineer ANYTHING can be rushed, and if you think its not crunch? Well fair enough we don't actually know if crunch happened, hence why the commenter said there will most definitely, which is surprisingly still speculative if you think about the context here. You're the one who doesnt know how game development works, and hey, mmaybe they shouldnt be working on multiple projects eh? Better yet, maybe the HIGHEST GROSSING MEDIA FRANCHISE should put more bodies, time, and money into these teams or, even better, limit their projects to one or two and not three or more? I know I know, this will mean that the fat suits up top will only get to buy one yacht instead of two, and they'll probably be forced to buy million dollar mansions instead of billion dollar ones, I know its sad, but they can afford to do better by this franchise. Lastly, if you're gonna say "but most of the money-" stop, just stop, this franchise lives and breathes off the GAMES, its a GAME franchise first, and even if it somehow makes less money than common merch, it would be screwed over hard without the games. Game, game, game.
I’m excited for these games! However as someone who plays competitive Pokémon I think the current battle system is really great ( however most people don’t know this because the games do not show how complex and interesting the battle system is or push you to use it to its full potential ) and hope they keep it this way.
I would be so much more hype for Pokemon games if they would actually push you to learn and use the full battle system. I'm not interested in multiplayer, and the single player experience currently gives you no incentive to do anything but the basics.
@@butterworthboys4985 Agreed! I played my first mainline Pokémon game (Ultramoon) a couple years ago, and, due to simplicity and lack of knowledge, I basically just hyperleveled my starter and went down the move menu for every battle for most of the gameplay. (I know, I know, I'm one of those people.) I feel like they need to push players to be strategic, because newer/noncompetitive players currently have no good reason to not go with the simplest possible strategy.
The PLA battle system is the first time I caught myself genuinely strategizing in a pokemon game as a casual player & honestly I hope we see it used again. The simplification of many things also made it easier for me to understand whats going on. They'll obviously remove the agile/strong system, but even without it I like the way PLA and its menu works. Its felt much more time efficient . Theres nothing stopping them from making separate battle modes for competitive online multiplayer either, so i hope they think about how they can benefit their variety of players instead of going back to the same tedious thing we've done for generations. I personally dont care for online battling, so it would be nice to get to keep the single player experience that had me so interested in engaging in battles !
@@justtamu The thing about PLA's combat system is that it does a good job of FEELING strategic and complex, but when it's examined more carefully it becomes obvious that it's actually incredibly shallow in comparison to the old system. Take the Agile and Strong styles, for example. They're incredibly fun to play around with and make the player FEEL like they're being smart and strategic when using them. Upon examination, though, one realizes that the only thing required to take full advantage of this mechanic is to simply follow the turn order prompt. In reality, the new system does nothing but screw over Pokemon that aren't fast enough to take advantage of it or bulky enough to survive the effects of it. It's fun, but offers very little actual depth, and in fact LIMITS the amount of strategy involved in battling.
11:18 just making a note of this so I can find that Unown later. As for the starters, I feel like they've all gotten a fair share of love, as well as hate from the fan base. Personally I choose the Fire type more often than not though.
Personally, I actually don't want Pokémon SV to bring too much from Legends Arceus. I like the battling aspect of Pokémon and I like that grinding has become more streamlined in the main games. Legends Arceus does NOT have a good battle system, and its style of collect-a-thon is fundamentally grindy.
That is to me the reason why Gen 9 will have tradition battles where you can only catch in battles again, because Arceus Legends is in the past where you had to catch or fight multiple times, the complete a pokedex entry, also because technology like electronic pokedex does not exist yet. That does tend to become tedious as the game progresses.
It is a JRPG. The games were meant to be grindy. Honestly, this is why I love Miyazaki and the Soulsborne games. People cry for accessibility at the cost of gameplay and artistic integrity. He always says no, and git gud. Pokemon should not be making things "less grindy", it should be making people git gud. Arceus had a great battle system and was difficult to a fun degree.
@@juice2307 A game can be a challenge without needing to grind. Or in the case of many JRPGs I enjoy like Tales of, Persona 5, Ni No Kuni, Dragon Quest XI, The World Ends With You, Kingdom Hearts, 13 Sentinels, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and IX, Pokémon, etc. a game can be paced in a way that you level up just from playing the story so you don't have to feel like you're wasting your life doing nothing just to get to the next plot point. And I wholeheartedly disagree about Legends Arceus being difficult. I found it to be a cakewalk. If I'm going to play a game that's easy I prefer one that at least gives me different strategies to experiment with (like the main games). Legends Arceus' battle system is too basic for me.
@@edmg7 They can be, but grinding is a core part of progression in Pokemon. Games that are built around it should keep it. The whole point is that the work and time you put into your Pokemon has meaning. You do not get to be entitled to quick progression, but rather must surrender to the process. This is what I loved about the grindiness of old Pokemon, and it is what I love about Dark Souls. If someone wants to make an accessible game, then they ought to make a spin-off. It is never good to try and diminish the integrity of what a game is at its core. That is how many franchises have gone hollow.
Battle-Required catching could work as long as all the animations are quick and snappy. Example below. Battle starts and under a second later, you can select commands. Pokémon do their moves, and the basic moves in the early game* resolve in under a second each, with little no downtime between animations. Health bars reduce quickly, providing no tangible wait time. Two seconds have passed since you selected your move last turn and you have the menu again. You pick the bag, and the bag responds as snappy as the move selection. You've selected the pokéball in under a second-and-a-half. The throw animation completes in under a second. DRAMATIC PAUSE FOR POKEBALL TO SHAKE THREE TIMES! ... DING and the battle resolves. Fewer than 20-30 seconds have passed and the wild battle is over, the pokemon is caught. You name them. XP and such are small popups that appear after the battle is over, you already have control of your character again, only stopping you for new moves or evolutions. and THAT is how you make random encounters work
@MayorBryce I’m sorry, perhaps I wasn’t clear. I’m not talking about selection-time being limited. The player could take as much time as they need, but all the intermittent animations need to resolve quickly. The intent is to cut down on wait time.
I'm picking weedcat. It's a done thing. The only thing that could change my mind is seeing the designs for their evolutions. It's just a shame that Violet has the legendary I want -- Miraidon -- but lacks my favorite pokemon of all time -- Tyranitar. That's going to be an exclusive for Scarlet. I'll probably still go with Violet.
I always pick the Grass starter. It's first in the Pokedex (except for the Unova Pokedex), and it always makes the early game easier so I can play the begining of the game very casually while still learning about the changes. Also, I love cats & Spriggatito is such a cute little quadrupedal kitty.
I see it more as "stealth catching" than "cold catching". You have to catch them while unawares to do a successful catch without battling so it is totally a "stealth catch" and not a "cold catch".
I mean, not necessary to stealth either, just don't draw aggro. I threw balls at anything that doesn't have a red eye mandating uncatchable, and even then in battle I made a habit of not battling but just spamming balls. I caught every legendary this way with 1 ball turns in battle at full health except for Cresselia which took 4 balls and Amorus who was awful, so I attacked, crit killed, then had to do her again, but I was better prepared not to crit kill lol. Some require stealth, but like bidoof don't for example, and some are just positioning like the alpha gallade in snowpoint temple can be ball caught without a fight by standing on one particular tile to throw balls, uncloaked. but if we're thinking of it in a binary stealth/aggro system, then yeah stealth throwing is good enough
I didn’t like the research part in arceus. I was banging my head against the wall catching a graveler for the 50th time. Not fun, I’d rather battle them for XP to level my pokemon
@@kmharnish Me too. Inteleon is underrated around here. I'm surprised it's the most popular of the three in Japan, but I'm certainly not gonna complain about that.
Now we know why BDSP was outsourced. Scarlet/Violet has clearly been in the works for a long time. I think the people concerned need to understand that game development takes place between different teams with multiple projects going on at once. Development for S/V has likely been going on since the late stages of Sword/Shield and the DLC.
@MayorBryce All the side quests? A few extra islands, a Battle Tower, and one Johto legendary. That was it. I didn’t forget what BDSP’s post game was. It’s just a better one. I’d take the same post game as Diamond/Pearl over such minuscule additions.
@@SavvyWalrus FRLG had Gen 3 graphics. Okay. The Sevii Islands weren’t that much in the grand scheme of things. HGSS was updated to Gen 4, added the Suicune quest, and copied Platinum’s Battle Frontier. That was it. A lot of the content from Platinum is in BDSP is different ways. Only thing missing is the Battle Frontier, but keep in mind these are Diamond/Pearl remakes, not a Platinum remake. As another result of this, of course the story is going to follow the original Diamond/Pearl. You also have access to most of the Sinnoh native evolution lines Platinum had available during the main story are in the Grand Underground. To say these games don’t have any Platinum content is blatantly false.
I was suprised at how much I liked PLA, honestly I found almost everything a blast. I however, honerstly just utterly despise the Speed/Turn order system. It way over-benefits fast pokemon and basically leaves all slow Pokemon even further in the garbage bin, with basically 0 balance, even in doubles were slower (though still generally not especially slow) Pokemon thrive. If you want to know what a full Pokemon game using the PLA system with competitive would look like, just imagine a Blazekin stamping of a Shuckle's face, forever.
You can just... use the agile style to attack more of your pokemon is slow. And besides that, Pokémon has always favored the faster mons since the beginning and this change in battle style changes it to be more strategic than just trading turns until one or the other faints.
@@UncannyEXP Agile style is irrelevant because A) the other pokemon already got to act multiple times and b) the other pokemon can also use Agile style, infact the styles make it worse because Agile style is the only valid choice for a slow Pokemon, but a fast pokemon could choose to act normally or even strength style, know they won't get multi-action'd on. That isn't how Pokemon battles worked before , it wasn't trading turns, both side chose turns simultaneously and then they activated based on speed/priority. Pokemon Arceus system, however, WOULD be just trading turns, cause the extra levels of speed supremacy would nullify the possibility of two turns (with everyone only picking fast pokemon) thus each side would pick it's action, and it activate with none of strategy or reading your opponent that the standard Pokemon battle system. Even comparing the ideal of what Arceus wants to be, you trade being able to slightly modify the numbers on attack and the theoretical possibility of being able to act multiple times for any mystery or read strategy, the ability to do anything to surprise you opponent, anything like "If I use this attack it might knock them out, but they know that so they might switch to this other Pokemon who is immune to it so maybe I use this OTHER attack that could knock out that other Pokemon but they know I know that so they might do something different yet" for the kinda basic example. There is like... actually a lot of strategy in how the competitive battle system is setup with what information is provide or denied and use that to your advantage. Arceus is just... kinda clumsy standard JRPG battle system similar to 90% of turn based (or atb) systems that have come out since 1996, and honestly unsuited for competitive play.
Quaxly is based on Don Quixote, one of the most talked about fictional characters in the spanish language and culture. For sure im also leaning towards him for this reason, however the fire starter is stealin my heart
I've always taken the fire type starter in all previous games, and I do like fuecoco, but I think sprigatito is my favorite of these three, so its a tough choice. I'll have to see the evolutions.
I'm cautiously optimistic. I saw the textures on the Pokemon and saw reflective light in Lucario's eyes for his model and I was hopeful. But even the trailer had some worrying issues I noticed, like the lens flare flickering in and out during the sunset shot and some reused animations. But again, I'm more optimistic than for Sword and Shield, because this just proves that Sword and Shield could have been better if TPCi treated its development teams better and didn't try to hinder them.
I didn't play Arceus because of how simple it was, I do like how variable the mainline pokemon games are. Movepools are huge, abilities and natures make your pokemon unique. I'd love to see a complete overhaul of EVs, but I like them from a competitive standpoint. I think there was some good behind Arceus, but I hope Scarlet/Violet are a lot closer to the mainline than Arceus.
I’m looking forward to the games. I really hope S/V evolves the PLA battle system. The issue I have is it feels like the CPU bodies me even in the simpler Battles due to the Styles. They often get a sudden extra turn just because I made a bad call.
See, therein lies the fatal flaw in the PLA battle system. Speed is the only stat that ACTUALLY matters, and it makes Agile Style kinda broken. If you know a Pokemon is going to be on your endgame team, get its Speed Grit Level to 10 asap and teach it a buffing move and a priority move. You'll get so many free turns that it's basically impossible to lose. Especially if you're okay with using items. Also never use slower/tankier Pokemon unless you just really like that specific species; if you do elect to use one, though, you still want to bump speed to minimize the amount of times you get hit two or three times and practically NEVER use Strong Style. If you feel the need to bump up your defenses for these faster Pokemon (which can happen in this system since levels seem less important) then you can just bump their DEF/SDEF/HP Grit Levels too and you'll probably be fine.
I can agree with all of this, I hope it brings over elements from aceous, but as long as we keep getting more legends style games, I’m down for a more traditions style of game… but also more experimenting in Pokémon (like the open world) is veeeery welcome!
It is not just you; I do not like Quaxley at all. The other two are great and I'm having a hard time choosing, but I ruled out the duck immediately... I'll probably go for Fuecoco.
Water/fight, fire/dark, and grass/psychic type sets for final starter typings.. i hope-ish. Sorry, I really love the idea that eventually each starter counters each-other, really ties in type matchup evolutions as you become a better trainer and 'evolve' your skillset. I have always picked my starter long before evolutions were revealed/leaked and this time I'm pretty torn, I'm excited but also hungry for more info about the games in general.
When it comes to the RPG-style, in-real-time battling, if they include it I would expect it to be sort of an alternate mode, like double battles. I sincerely doubt that a mainstream Pokemon game would throw you into that permanently, but it could be an option for online multiplayer and a few select in-game trainer battles. That's just my opinion, though.
I've already been hoping for some sort of pirate evolution for Quacksly, specifically a final evolution where it's just a captain Quacksly piloting a ship with other Quacksly manning the deck and stuff
The new speed mechanics would kill the competitive scene, so I really don't think they could bring it out of non legends games. I know a lot of people don't care about that but sword and shield has really grown it and I don't think it would be worth giving up. More singleplayer games like the legends games could definately use it very well though.
I like the idea of "cold catching" while you are already engaged with a pokemon because it may add an extra layer of challenge if your pokemon cam be depleted if you fail.
I've seen love for all three of the starters, personally. It all depends on the final evolutions though. Super-happy that you're so excited for Scarlett and Violet, and it would be awesome if they brought PLA's mechanics in.
PLA managed to make me optimistic that maybe Pokémon will correct itself but personally I still feel too burned to be outright hyped. I almost expect them to do something outrageously dumb and I need to see more to convince me otherwise. But I’m at least not entirely writing off hope anymore.
i basically feel the same exact way, and the starter designs did not improve my faith at all. i will seriously be fine with like 10 or 20 new pokemon if it means we dont get a heap of forgettable nonsense.
I think my only complaint about the trailer for SV is the look of it. The game looked really muddy at certain points in the trailer. I hope they polish the graphics and take their time with it so we don't get more "N64 trees."
Quaxly is definitely my favorite of the three. It looks like it’s gonna evolve into a johnny bravo type thing, and if it does it will easily be the best of the 3
I usually pick the fire starter. Kinda makes sense when my all-time favorite pokemon is scorbunny, and thus cinderace. He's just so cool. For this I'm thinking grass pokemon, IF the final evolution is cool. It needs to still be a cat
@@litodat233 that'd be cool. I'm going to buy it for my kid either way, but. Unlike every other iteration. I won't be buying both versions unless it is noticeably different

One of the things I appreciate about Pokémon Arceus was that trade evolutions was optional. They made an item that allows you to evolve your Graveler, Hunter, Machoke, etc.
I really hope that doesn't go away.
Facts. Sometimes a person wants to evolve a pokemon while also being anti-social.
No fr though the trade stuff is so annoying

@@IceBlueStarCat ok im a new fan to the series (first game was BDSP but fully completed PLA) but I'm pretty sure that Legends tells what the move does. It shows damage, accuracy, if its effective or not, and the description that may note whats special about the move.

The 2D games weren’t seamless open worlds: most towns and routes had little building separating them to load in a new tile set
Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald want to have a little chat with you. There are almost no route loading points on those games.
3D on the ds made it necessary.
The reason I DON'T like cold catching is because I don't want to waste time catching a bunch of Pokemon who will never leave my PC.
@@BurningSilverRose That's true, but it does allow the game to have quests where you give away a pokemon. Though that's not much...

They also need to respect our time in regards to team building for online battles as well.

Yeah no dodge roll is fine. But they need to add jump mechanic. We should be able to jump on one inches height legdes.
the "cold catch" mechanic plays on this too. by making avoiding battle not just an option but often desirable (since there is a lot of risk to encountering pokémon in arceus), it makes you hide in the grass and sneak around a lot, really giving you the sense of fear of pokémon that the characters are meant to have. thematically it makes sense, the gameplay mechanics seem to be broadly built around trying to get this sense across, and i think i would be fine not having them in future games since as you say, people have come to feel safe around pokémon

That would be such a pain in the ass to make but here’s hoping!

Shit take, they look fly asf
They're supposed to look bland? Designed to be easy to customize
Then isn't that the same damn problem BDSP had where it half implemented seeing pokemon in the overworld? I thought people didn't like stuff like that

I feel like something they could do is keep the legends arceus catching system, but just for a safari zone type thing because they are basically the same in practice with the safari zones having the random encounters
Some things about Legends that I really love (that no one really talks too much about) that I hope carrying over to the main series:
Choosing to evolve a Pokemon - in Legends, it was such an improvement to deliberately choose when to evolve (when criteria is met, i.e. level) versus your Pokemon bugging you to evolve every time they level up or give them an everstone to hold
Not Needing to Trade to Evolve - I feel like having some Pokemon only evolve when traded is a bit archaic and seemed like a novelty with earlier generations, but just having a item to evolve them was SOOOOOO much better.

Thing i'd like to see in these games:
- Cold catching
- Dual type starters
- A good story

I'm excited for the new games, but I'm tempering my expectations. Considering the time frame of its release with Arceus, the games were definitely made along side each other, meaning they absolutely have had no time to take the feedback from the changes made in Arceus and apply it to S/V. Because of this, I would not be surprised if its a more standard Pokemon experience. They would have been gambling on the reception of Arceus if any of the bigger changes make it in to S/V.
Yeah... that makes me scared too.
I want them to give us what we've been asking for years: difficulty settings.

You K.O your opponent, then the new Pokémon K.O’s you because they move first, repeat cycle
I want the system to stay in Legends games
Totally agree. Hisuian Electrode quickly became my ace due to speed + paralysis letting me start with 2-3 extra turns every battle. I can see stuff like that becoming a huge problem in competitive.
Yeah, I reeeeaaally hope they never bring back that battle system for any Pokemon game including any future Legends games. I always dreaded whenever a character forced me into a battle due to how unfun they were
PLENTY of things to be wary of:
- still hate the dual releases, so unnecessary in the modern gaming hellscape
- they need to be clear about the Dex, no lies & be honest about it
- allow EXP Share to be toggled per individual Pokemon
- allow tutorial skipping
- hopefully a good story with no condescending writing or intrusive dialogue
- have higher level Pokemon be catchable with obedience to balance
- integrate the moves & evolution systems from Legends Arceus
- make affection optional again, mandatory affection is game breaking
- make battles snappier, no constant updates on weather/status/affection/etc
- good framerate & optimization overall
- include good post-game content
- break conventions, we don't need Team Villain or legendaries in stories, mix it up
Other than all these concerns, I'm cautiously optimistic about Gen 9.
i like your opinions
and no shiny locked starters
Yah I think that’s a sign of possibly having too high of expectation there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 (at least for Pokemon, any other game then yah completely valid but with Pokemon that has a repatriation of not meeting a lot of modern day standards 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️)
You might want too cut at least half of that down by half. If they succeed with most of that half with SV then you can bring the other points back for the next Pokemon games. 😂😂😂😂😂
Screw it, might as well give my stupid opinions, discussion is fun:
-dual releases are a pretty cool part of the franchise.

@@LinkMountaineer still not the point. But yeah this has been in development at least since PLA at least. But it could still have more time
Would I love for it to have more time sure but I don’t get why it’s surprising.
I think they rushed so many of the last gens that people are beginning to forget what a finished game looks like.
@@rapasdecoeur7017 Except they haven’t been rushed, though. Patches have been around for ages now and plenty of games make use of them.
@@LinkMountaineer
ANYTHING can be rushed, and if you think its not crunch?
I absolutely love Quaxley, I wasn’t sure at first but when I saw it’s name I just fell in love.
@@juice2307 I can't say I've ever had to grind in a Pokemon game before Arceus. So I dunno how "core" it really is.
I really hope the whole world is open from the beginning and the wild Pokemon and trainers Scale based on how many gym badges you have obtained
XP and such are small popups that appear after the battle is over, you already have control of your character again, only stopping you for new moves or evolutions.
and THAT is how you make random encounters work
that would be awesome
Honestly as long as I don't have to enter a load into a battle scene to battle and catch pokemon I'm fine having to battle.
I didn’t like the research part in arceus. I was banging my head against the wall catching a graveler for the 50th time. Not fun, I’d rather battle them for XP to level my pokemon
Legends Arceas was so good it got me to hope again for the mainline series.
I like how Arlo keeps looking to his left at the potted plant as if he's talking to it
Water starter, everyone hates or just nobody loves
Water starter final evo, literally a magnificent creature everyone wants on their team
So the complete opposite of what Ineleon turned out to be.
I love inteleon, def one of my fav starters
I was always a Water starter fan, but then Inteleon happened 🤮
@@kmharnish Me too. Inteleon is underrated around here. I'm surprised it's the most popular of the three in Japan, but I'm certainly not gonna complain about that.
@@kmharnish How? It's not even a lizard, it's just James Bond doing an unconvincing reptile cosplay.
@MayorBryce I still think Brilliant Diamond is great. I’m not really interested in arguing over it again, though.
@MayorBryce Wow. Imagine a remake being like the originals. Certainly FRLG and HGSS weren’t like that during their main stories. Oh wait.
Now the shuckle will get fuckeld!
I can not unseen Quelxey being Dewey form Ducktales, specifically the 2017 reboot.
I hope arlo really talks about Metroid Dread too!
Arlo is finally happy with the direction Pokemon is going in and that makes me happy.
Nah, I much prefer the turn based battle system
Sprigatito is my fave personally but I get the vibes that Quaxly would be a good fit for Arlo
Foreal. These casuals don't understand the joy that is competitive Pokemon.
It looks like it’s gonna evolve into a johnny bravo type thing, and if it does it will easily be the best of the 3
The Cat is definitely going to be my starter Cats are so cute.
I absolutely love Quaxly ❤️ I cannot wait to adventure with him!
So happy to see Arlo finally cover the latest and cutest Pokemon starters! 🥰
Sprigattito is overrated, fuecoco all day every day
Na the duck boi is where it’s at
@@Hi-fd4cw Sprigatito Gang, let's go!
The Fuecoco Friends will prevail in the end.
I usually pick the fire starter. Kinda makes sense when my all-time favorite pokemon is scorbunny, and thus cinderace. He's just so cool. For this I'm thinking grass pokemon, IF the final evolution is cool. It needs to still be a cat
Unless it does something amazing, I'll be holding out for the next "legends" I LOVE this style of pokemon.
I feel like this one will b better then legends
@@litodat233 that'd be cool. I'm going to buy it for my kid either way, but. Unlike every other iteration. I won't be buying both versions unless it is noticeably different
I've never mained a grass pokemon, and that cat is so cute that I'm sold. Unusually, I'm not sure which title to go with - normally I pick my preferred colour or whatever, but I love red and purple...
Literally the best Squarespace ad sketch I've seen yet
