You should record your reaction whenever they evolve, and just ask your friends to let you know what level they’ll evolve at to avoid spoilers!
all starters evolve at 18 and 36 so asking for evo levels is redundant

@@saacattaac007 You, my friend, would be incorrect with this statement. Most first stage starters evolve at 16 and most second stage starters evolve at 36, but there are some exceptions. Cyndaquil evolves at 14, but 17 in legends. Bayleef evolves at 32. Ivysaur also evolves at 32. Turtwig evolves at 18, and Grotle evolves at 32. Chimchar evolves at 14. All of the Unova starters evolve at 17. The Alolan first stages evolve at 17 and the second stages evolve at 34. The Galarian second stages all evolve at 35. Overall, while most starters do share a typical evolution level of 16 and 36, fire starters have been known to reach their second stages faster on occasion, and grass starters also semi-frequently reach their final stages at 32 instead of the usual 36.

the evos look great, my favourite evos from this gen
I find _all_ the 3rd Evo designs amazing. And I'm usually a picky one. If you want a general gist of appearance % stats & naming, then *[spoilers]*
Grass ---> Meowscarada. Grass/Dark. Bipedal Cat Spanish magician. Glass cannon. Base 123 Speed. HA: Protean.
Fire ---> Skeledirge. Fire/Ghost. Amazing looking 4-legged fiery Crocodile. The slowest of the group though. Tank build.
Water ---> Quaquaval. Water/Fighting. Very fancy-looking carnival dancer. Base 85 speed, big attack.
I still love how Arlo has so much personality and expressiveness despite having a static muppet face.
Puppetry is such a weird art form given how much life you can give to these objects obviously the muppets do this wuite well but even solo puppet shows like Randy feltface’s can convey so much and there’s no disconnect when working with a live action comedian (that doesn’t feel like the right term but you know what I mean)
I sometimes stop and consider that fact. I'm very sensitive to expressive animation, it bothers me when it's bad. So I can really appreciate Arlo's work here.
Borderlands is maybe the first time I realized that. The characters had such fun and expressive voice clip, I could really feel immersed when hearing them talking to me over radio. Whenever they talked to me in 3D standing in front of me though... Yeesh, the illusion was gone. Totally unfitting visuals. I'm still not sure exactly what was wrong, but it just... Didn't work.
Here with Arlo... His eyes are always open. Static muppet face like you said. But I never feel out of it, I'm totally buying his performance as a character speaking to me. Maybe aside from his expressivity with his head and hand, it's the accurate "lip sync" that fits the dialogue? Anyway just wanted to say I agree, as someone who's especially sensitive to this aspect. Arlo feels alive, he's a talented puppetee-- Er I mean monster.

Arlo, I also am starting with Fuecoco! My wife is taking Quaxly since she always picks water type, and my daughter is picking Sprigatito since she loves cats, wolves, and dogs. Between all of us we'll be able to see all the starters. It should be pretty fun.

I adore cats and the idea of a cat friend had me so enamored, but like you said, Fuecoco feels like Totodile, so I was torn between the two of them
I feel very confident in my choice after seeing sprigatito's evolution, and that's all I'll say

Immediately as I saw the little buddy that was Fuecoco, instantly loved the little guy. After seeing his final evo, definitely my favorite out of the 3, runner up being Sprigatito.

I can't choose between Sprigatito and Fuecoco. Quaxly's final evo is my least favorite, but I like it a lot better then the gen 7 water starter.

I'm going with Quaxly, originally because it had the least amount of drama, then I sat the leaked final and it just cemented the whole thing because of just how FABULOUS he is
In the end, I turned to the pokemons' personalities when I found myself in a similar situation. Fuecoco's description said "This pokemon is laid back and likes to go at its own pace, and loves to eat". This described me almost perfectly, so I knew we would get along very well

The deciding factor to me is the final evolution. Realistically it's the one I'm gonna stick with the longest. We have the same choices for starters too! Haven't been this stumped sinced gen 4!

I agree. Also, since Gen 5 they had a rough concept for every starter...one bulkier, "manlier", one leaner, more "feminin", and one more or less "cooler", "edgier"

Honestly, Fuecoco was already my favorite from the start, and it has hands-down my favorite final form, so I'm definitely choosing it.

I have been avoiding its evolutions because I want to be surprised since I adore Fuecoco's design and picked it the instant I saw it. I did look at the other starters' evolutions since, well, I won't be getting them right away, and I don't feel like I'd be disappointed with them, but still. Gimme my little pepper lizard.

Ever since delphox, the final evolution has been the deciding factor for me. I need to see what the design looks like in order to make a decision, even if it's just a glance. I was set on picking sprigatito before I even saw what the final evolution was and now that I saw just a small glimpse of it I got so excited it made me even more hype for the game now.
Also as soon as you picked Fuecoco after hearing all your reasonings, i smiled. I was like thank god he made the right choice

I feel like the only good final this gen is sprigatito. Quaxly's final imo is the worst final in any gen. In other gens It was harder for me to decide but this time it was really easy.
I think what made it harder to choose for me is when they started letting the starters walk around like arceus and how they showed the starters in shield. Cause now I see their personalities.

I picked Fuecoco as soon as I saw him back in February lol. The design immediately caught my eye. I already saw the final evolution and not gonna spoil anything but I’m definitely more than excited to play Gen 9 now lol

I've stuck to sprigattio from day 1, I solidified my choice immediately the moment I saw the 2nd and last evolution because I liked how they looked

I’m going to be playing both games, so I decided to go with Sprigatito in Scarlet and Fuecoco in Violet. It’s a shame because Quaxly is my favorite of the first stage starters, but I really don’t like it’s final evolution from what I saw. I will admit that the official art where Juliana in the scarlet outfit and Florian in the Violet outfit with sprigatito and Fuecoco respectively did a good amount of the deciding for me, since I plan on playing as a boy in Violet and a girl in Scarlet.
I'm not gonna spoil anything, but I'm VERY interested in your reaction once you find out what the final evolutions are for the starters.

As someone who saw the leaks I am going for Sprigatito, absolutely loved the design and how it looks in motion.
And judging by Arlo’s logic, I think he is making the right choice by going with Fuecoco

I was wembling between Fuecoco and Sprigatito. I love fire starters and Fuecoco is as cute as a butt! Sprigatito is also appealing to me because - cute as heck - but after having seen its final evolution form, I think that is certainly my favourite and I like its typing. All that said, after initially disregarding Quaxly and instead applying my priorities - which is too have a team with as much type spread as possible so I can use loads of new mons on my first playthrough - takes it!
Fuecoco... good choice! I'm doing my very first run with sprigatito (It's adorable and I love cats- have one myself, gonna name sprigatito after her like I've done with littens), but I will most likely do another playthrough with fuecoco because I also really love fire types and have chosen them in most other games. I have seen the leaks for the final evos and these are still my choices. Quaxly is still cute tho.
My biggest factor is the final evolution. After seeing all 3, Sprigotito is my choice. It just fits my vibe and the inspiration is clear to me.
Final evo shouldn't matter at all
@@Gloomdrake it does to me. Because in my first play through, I build my entire team around my starter. So I need to know their final typing. Also how the Pokémon plays is important to me too. Is it tanky? Is it a glass cannon? Is it a special attacking monster? Also, the final evolution is the form it’s going to last the longest in. So if I don’t like a design, then it lowers my chance to want to use it. These are just things I think about. I know it’s not how everyone else plays, but it’s how I do. But I totally respect your opinion.
I've decided for Fuecoco being my starter for Scarlet since the first time I saw it back in february due to having a soft spot for crocodillians in general
and it gave off Totodile vibes.
When I saw the leaks for Fuecoco's evolution, it solidified my choice.

I'm with you so much on this Arlo, I've had my fair share of tough decisions when it comes to choosing a starter. It happened with Gen 3, 6, and 7 for me, and now I'm having the same situation with Gen 9.
Quaxly was my fav by far when I first saw them, and its final form is also by far my fav. Cant wait to see what you think of all of them once you see!!!
Weirdly enough this video kinda helps me to view my own situation from a different perspective. I am thinking about quitting my job and finding a better one. It's a risk I need to take because I'm not happy at my current workplace right now. But which career path should I follow? I need to figure out my priorities, it'll definitely help!

Why not find a new one first and then quit? It's the best way to go about it, trust me we all go through that. Good luck the more effort you put into it the better the result.
I genuinely thought you were saying you were about to quit your job to consider different perspectives on the Paldea starter pokemon and find a better one. I was so fucking hype for you.
I do hope you find a job you’re good at and enjoy, that’s super important. And if not that, one that gives you plenty of both money and time to pursue other less lucrative hobbies and spend time with people who make you happy. That’s a really big deal.

The final evolutions are everything to me so I couldn't resist peeking. I won't spoil anything so to keep it vague, while I didn't get exactly what I was expecting I think I like where Sprigatito is going. Sadly I don't really like the other starters' final forms at all. But as I was watching the video, even before you got to the priority-based choice system I just had the feeling you would probably enjoy Fuecoco and it's evolutions the most. Great pick!
The final evolutions are such a let down. I thought the cat would be quadrupedal, the croc a spicy bean, and duck a sailor with big muscles like you expect as a cross of Donald Duck and Pop-eye.
I also looked at the leak and I got to say... I'm disappointed, will probably box my starter again and start fresh. Really hope they improve their starter designs again in the future. I just want one gen where all three designs are awesome, I want to be able to pick my favorite not my least disliked.
As a standalone design, I like Fuecoco's final evolution, but I feel like it doesn't jive well with the rest of the line. I really like all three middle evolutions though, none of them really suffer from "ugly teenage phase."
That's funny cause Fuecoco's final evo is why I'm choosing him. I'm not sure what people were expecting but I'M IN LOVE. I love how haunting Fuecoco's sig move is for the final form. And IT'S GOT A LIL BIRD FRIEND THAT'S WHY HE HAS AN EGG HAT FOR THE SECOND EVO that's AWESOME. It's JUST like with real life crocs who have a symbiotic relationship with birds.
@@TheRibottoStudios I guess in my case it was "less metallic." Skeledirge is also a lot more angular than it's preevolutions, I'd have preferred it to have stayed friend shaped like Ludicolo. It could have easily still been quadripedal and kept the Day of the Dead mask, but just been more huggable
Man, I just woke up this February and saw a cat and said "Oh, I like cats." People out here are having a crisis over this and I decided my choice back when I thought the Region was Italy!
...Making a Team is INSANELY hard though, everything I love is weak to Fire or Ground!

dw, fire only ever shows up in gym battles and ground types tend to be PhysAtkers, so as long as your team can tank and you can keep your Water friends beefed for the gyms, you're golden~
For most of the wait I was all for Sprigattito but then a leaked about its second form popped up on a thumbnail and it did put me off so I’m left undecided
My issue is that I chose the fire starter… and yet a lot of the cool Pokémon I want only my team are also fire Pokémon. I can’t justify 3-4 fire Pokémon!

Good job picking a starter! I still haven't managed to choose. I spoiled myself with the leaks to try and make up my mind and now I'm just stuck between the one I like most in first form and the one I like most in last form.
Arlo you have already been my favorite youtuber for a very long time now, so knowing your a Totodile fan (the whole Totodile line tie for my favorite Pokemon) makes me very happy!!!
Ugggh I feel you Arlo, these guys have me pulling my hair out too. It really doesn’t help that, just based on these first stages, these feel like the best starters we’ve had in a looooong while. Like, maybe the best, most holistically good trio since Sinnoh.
For me, I’m so torn between Quaxly and Fuecoco, but I could easily see Sprigatito being an unexpected dark horse in this race. I think, in a vacuum, Fuecoco is my favorite, and the idea of it evolving into some Fire/Ghost day of the dead ghost pepper is just 10/10. My only issue is that I already have some plans for fire types on my team. Lechonk might evolve into some kind of Fire type roast ham, and I’m dead set on having that cute boy on my team, and, with me missing the Sword and Shield boat, I was really looking forward to rediscovering my inner Thomas the Tank Engine love and training up a Coalossal.
Quaxly is probably my second favorite in a vacuum, but it’d definitely fit on my preliminary team much better. Water types fit my tastes a lot more readily, and I could see myself being content with his evolutions if they drop the ball on Fuecoco’s. Plus, there’s the potential of him evolving into some kind of matador warrior duck, and, me being a huge Persona fan, having a matador on my team would be an 11/10 to just barely edge out a Ghost ghost pepper stompy boi. That’d be a huge lark though, and I feel like Fuecoco is a much easier evolution to do well, even if it’d be harder to do Quaxly’s poorly.
That leaves Sprigatito at the bottom, and I don’t really see her climbing far from there. I’m not a fan of her design, she’s probably has the easiest evolutions to fumble, and I’d already love having a Smoliv on my team. There definitely is that possibility of her evolving into some cool Puss in Boots style warrior cat though, and that would probably salvage the design if they did take the sexy humanoid route…
But aggggh like I said, I don’t know. I think I’m leaning towards Quaxly, but every time I think about committing I get a pang of regret at not enjoying a journey with that stompsy little pepper boy

Minor spoilers for the pokemon u talked abt, mostly talking about their themes and opinions on them that concern your comment
Lechonk’s evolutions aren’t any kind of “roast,” so no fire typing. Quaxly isnt a matador per se, more like a carnival inspired dancer. Sprig is themed around magicians & jokers, and that “puss in boots” likeness is actually not too far off. And fuecoco’s evo is pretty freakin cool but imo a weird thematic departure from the previous two evolutions. like out of the three id say its the one that looks the most different from its base evo.
If you were wondering, it doesnt resemble anything pepper-like. There IS a pepper pokemon but it’s not fuecoco’s line. Sadly.
Im going with fue coco. Easy. And it sounds like you will too. If you feel guilt not choosing the fire starter then chose the fire starter first play through. Maybe have a friend trade quaxly in the future?

Yeah that's where I came to on Fuecoco; I pretty well know what the others will turn out like, but Fuecoco is like an older style early Gen Pokemon that's not so predictable. And funnily enough this makes the first time I'll be picking Fire since Charmander.

I’ve loved Quaxly ever since I’ve seen the lil guy. At first, after seeing his final evo, I was kind thinking of choosing Sprigatito instead, but i’ve warmed up to him! His final evolution is stunning, and man have you seen the idle animations??? I know what you are. By far my favourite!

This video really helped me decide as well. I’ve never put this much thought into a starter in a long time. I usually just see them for the first time in the game or game cover art and just pick on a whim
11:00 As soon as you said "Fraggle Rock" I knew you were going to bring up Wembley lol
It was easier back in the day because you could immediately look at the Starter's first form and have a decent understanding of how it's final evolution would look. Bulbasaur was going to evolve into a bigger dinosaur thing. Tododile was going to evolve into a bigger alligator thing. It felt simple.
But man, Sun and Moon _REALLY_ soured my trust in Starter evolutions. Nothing about Litten screamed "heel wrestler". Nothing about Sobble screamed "secret agent sniper". So you really have to first see what weirdly human archetype GameFreak decided to slap on them at the very end.
That being said, yeah, Fuecoco is definitely my go-to for this generation. In fact, probably my favorite final Fire Starter evolution in _ages._
The other two give off _huge_ "the worst of Sword and Shield" vibes to me...

Definitely getting sprigatito! I love cats, and while I don't know what the final forms are, it's Pokédex entry strongly suggests to me it's going to gain Dark, my absolute favorite type, as it's secondary type. So... that made that choice really easy!

As someone who’s seen the final evolutions, Sprigatito’s is really solid. People were worried about it being too “human”, but what they came up with is a really cool balance imo.

Fueccoco was so close to being one of the greats of starter history but that final form throws away the cuteness and charm of the first two forms it's kind of neat but I wish it kept the sombrero. Quaxly has got to be the winner of this gen it's got a lot of personality and water fighting is cool though I don't get why it's fighting type

I was so unsure at the start of this but after hearing Arlo bash this out I agree I have been playing since the start and in the last few games I really have tried to play through with mons I haven’t used before to try out new things. I've never played a grass starter before, so the moment I saw the cute cat I was sold. Excited to join the Grass-lovers club for the first time!
If it helps, Fuecoco's face isn't meant to look apple-like, but more like a skull. I still haven't seen the evolutions, but I assume the bone/skeleton theme will be expanded on.

I never look at the final evolutions! I always go for which one I like the most in base form. Sprigatito seems like my choice, but I'm also known for flipping when I'm actually playing the game 😂
I was originally going for quaxly, but after seeing the final evolutions, I'm already set on fuecoco

I wasn't drawn to ANY of the starters, so after looking through the leaks and seeing which new Pokémon I wanted to run with, I'm going with Quaxly because none of the new water types looked interesting. And who knows? I might end up really liking the fabulous final evolution.
I’m kinda back and forth between Quaxly and Fuecoco. Sometimes I like their final evos, sometimes I don’t.
As I mentioned, I've stuck with Fuecoco basically since the reveal. Maybe because it's a little ghost pepper croc always struck a chord.
And I'm not calling it a ghost pepper because I know it's final form. I'm doing so - and always done so - because it's a little hot pepper with skull-like markings on its face.
These starters are the hardest choice for me since Gens 3 and 4.

Istg when I heard you talking about taking risks I knew you were going with Fuecoco! I'll be getting them too! The main reason I'm going with Fuecoco is it has become tradition for me at this point to choose the fire starter, and they usually appeal to me the most anyway. I hope you enjoy their evolution and the game too of course!
Remember everyone! You don’t have to evolve your starters :) it solves the “difficulty issue”
Yeah I'm choosing the cat and not evolving it! Making the game harder and making it so I have a starter that doesn't look super awful like all the final evos!
I'm not sure why but every Pokémon game I play my favorite starter is always either the water one or the grass one, never the fire one, ever since my first Pokémon game Black & White and it looks like that won't be changing

My curiosity made me look up the end evolutions. I liked all of the 1st forms but I was leaning toward fuecoco. Now with the evolutions out I'm undoubtedly picking ya boi fuecoco

Man, you threw me back in time with brining up Wemble-ing and Fraggle Rock, haha. I've been in the same boat as you, going back and forth on which Starter I want to go with. It was easy for me with Sobble in SwSh, but all the ScarVio Starters have thier appeal. Even the final form spoilers haven't swayed me!
Also, I don't blame you for keeping calling Fuecoco an Apple Lizard. His face is DEFINITELY Apple-y, even if the rest of him is supposed to be a pepper.
Congratulations on the big decision! I'm something of a "wembler" myself, but Pokemon is usually one thing where decisions of preference are pretty easy for me. Quaxly is my starter of choice and has been since I first saw the starter reveal. It's a duck that looks like it wears a beret and it reminds me of Donald Duck. I love water types & Kingdom Hearts, so I was sold instantly hehe I may end up liking the others more by the time I've played the game, but that's part of the fun.
For every single gen, I've always gone with the water starter. I just really like that type. But I think for the first time, I'm actually going to go with fuecoco. Having an alligator monster thing sounds more appealing to me than a duck. (I don't dislike ducks mind you)
Fuecoco is going to be my starter, I love the design and for it to be a pepper alligator or crocodile, I think its a perfect choice. 🥰
fuecoco seems like a good decision, but me personally i always look to see what the upcoming evolutions are. i mean if i am gonna choose it and be with it for a while i wanna know what it'll change into..
After looking at the final evolutions, I am also going with Fuecoco. It just feels like the first starter in a while that isn't based on a human occupation.

Congrats on the decision, I chose Sprigattito for my starter since 1. I lean to water for most starters and wanted to choose a different type this time and 2. I spoiled myself and chose based on evolution. Also if it hasnt been said before Fuecoco is a combination of 2 spanish words. Fuego for fire and Cocodrillo for crocodile.
I saw the leaks and absolutely ADORED Sprigatito final evo.
All 3 of them really appeal to me so it was a hard choice. THEY ARE SO GOOD!

Fr, you know at first i felt weirdly about all of them except for sprigatito’s, even though I really wanted it to be quadrupedal I actually liked it quite a lot. Then the other two grew on me quickly. I would have for sure chosen quaxly if I wasn’t partial to cats. Even after that fuecoco’s evo rocks.

Sprigatito has been my pick from almost hour 1 of seeing the first trailer. I am really exited for midnight tomorrow and for the first time being in the same room and playing a Pokémon game with my partner. He has been team Coco all this time as well, even more so after he spoiled himself. I am still going in blind but hearing his reactions to the new mon we are getting makes me so exited to play.
It's been Fuecoco for me since day one, and I think you showed me why I've been so enamored with it. It's kinda like Totodile, which is my favorite starter ever.
Quaxly for me, I have ducks at home and just feel that bit more of a connection to it on that level. I love the exuberantly feathered basilisk lizard that is Koraidon over Miraidon the Metallic Motorbike so it’s Pokémon Scarlet for me (1st at least as I pre-ordered the dual edition where I will pick Fuecoco or Sprigatito (probs Fuecoco))
Heck yeah! Fuecoco in Pokemon Violet! We agree! It's for sure a risk but fire types are always so fun and give you a huge leg up in the game. Plus, Fuecoco is just kind of too adorable for me not to pick him.

I was so impossibly torn between Quaxly and Fuecoco for the longest time. I really really really couldn't choose so I broke the rule I had set for myself about not looking at leaks for just the starters, and while it was still close, I landed on Quaxly. Of course when I inevitably play the other version I'm going to happily pick Fuecoco.
The last few gens I've been pretty comfortable about which starter I wanted right away. Rowlet was an owl in a bowtie so that was that for SuMo, and for SwSh I went all in on Grookey in the hopes it would turn into a gorilla and that paid off.
I'm also choosing Fuecoco for very similar reasons! I rarely choose fire starters (nothing against the type, just usually like one of the other starters better for whatever reason) so I wanted an excuse to choose one this generation. And yeah the design has a lot of evolution potential for a cool/powerful/goofy monster design, while the other two have clear animal inspirations that they'll have to stick with to some degree. Fuecoco kind of reminds me of gen 1 pokemon like Rhydon and Nidoking, where they're loosely based on an animal but they aren't bound to it.
Just transfer all three into your game and use all three. Problem solved!
I feel like with online trading and everything, picking a starter has become a lot less "important" and stressing ( to me at least) compared to let's say Gen 1 or Gen 2. Back in the day, I didn't have any friends who played Pokemon so picking a starter was much more of an important life decision. Today's like "ah, I can get them all eventually" and then I pick the one I vibe with at the time.
For future Arlo when Gen 10 happens and you have another quandary, another thing that really helps when picking a starter is taking a look at the OTHER new pokemon you really want and using that to influence your decision.
For example, I really like Smoliv, and its going to definitely be on my team. Since I for sure want that grass type on my team, then Sprigatito, another grass type, may not be the best fit for me.
Also a big totodile fan here! my very first starter and in my top 3 startes to this day alongside cyndaquil and turtwig

Congrats. And in the future, if you have too much trouble choosing, you can always ask other people who are playing the game what they're picking. If there's one starter that isn't popular in your group (assuming you have a group), you can always go with that to make trading easier, though that is a bit of a cop-out method. And Sprigatito, because cat.
Congratulations on your decision! We ended up contesting between Fuecoco and Sprig, but we have a fall back in our system. Certain alters are grouped under water starters, certain under grass, and finally certain under fire. The ones that'll start our game are the fire group, so it's automatic Fuecoco!

I was hard-line Fuecoco for a while, but I like Sprigatito’s final evolution far more. I’m also generally a grass guy, so that might just be the way I go.

@@sspectre8217 if it helps, Sprigatito’s final evolution doesn’t look like Incineroar as much as some people assume it will turn out to be, and is actually pretty distinctive and at least try’s to be different, although I love it, I too wish it stayed on all four legs

I was on the exact same boat with you, but I couldn't bare going blindly and getting disappointed with the final evolution. I was OK with it in previous generations, but it's too much of an unknown to me this time and I know I'd hate a bad final design for my starter, so I gave in and looked at the leaks for them. I wish I could go into the games and base my choice on the reasons you gave alone, but my knowledge is a burden I must carry now.
