"Third Rate Romance" is a song written by Russell Smith, first recorded in Montreal in 1974 by Jesse Winchester and his band the Rhythm Aces, assisted by Smith. It became a hit the following year by the newly re-formed Amazing Rhythm Aces on its 1975 album Stacked Deck.
I first heard it in '75, by the Rythm Aces, great song. Not maybe for children. To use as a role model, but grow up sooner or later. Too many snowflakes these days.
I was there when he made this video in Opelousas, Louisiana. The bar they were at was names "The Oaks" and the motel was across the street named " Pap's Motel". The bar is no longer there but the motel is still open.

Artist that came after 96 are more pop then country . Traditional country music is gone . Sadly you'll never see anyone close to Hank Sr , Merle Haggard , George Jones , Johnny Cash , Randy Travis , Allan Jackson & George Strait again . These types of artists are gone forever and they represented Country Music well. I know I have left a lot of other great artists out , they aren't forgotten , just trying to express my disappointment in the direction of country today .

Just caught the original version of this gem of a song on the radio about 30 minutes ago, from The Amazing Rhythm Aces, released in 1975. I was only 6 years old then, but I always loved their performance of the song, as well as Kershaw's. The song suited him perfectly back during his prime, before "Country" music, got hijacked and coopted by whatever it actually is today. Great performance of this song. The songwriter, Russell Smith, one of the original Rhythm Aces provided backing vocals on Sammy's version. Rosanne Cash also covered this one in 1982, and several others have as well. Its just a great little song.

I always enjoyed Sammy's music back in his heyday. I even lived in his hometown of Kaplan, LA for about a year. He seems to be their one claim to fame.
I first heard this on The Lost 45s of which I had first heard on Boston Radio in Syndication and then later on in Nationwide Syndication. It's very interesting & even made it perfect for a Rendezvous Three-fer along with Rendezvous by The Hudson Brothers and Hotblooded by Foreigner of which includes a secret Rendezvous.
Our sales manager Mr Swallow was a natural choice for this video. He didn’t have to change his first rate style. He is a great guy and a great salesman who is the one in this video and we worked the same company together. He said he can only sale the first job but we had to sale the others at an oil service company named Damco.
Russell Smith wrote this, and he later help formed the Amazing Rhythm Aces and recorded it. Not originally. He also wrote Amazing Grace (used…). Great songwriter.
