Adam Ficzeri I have iPad Pro 11inch 64gb and planning to upgrade to 2020 model 256gb! With the Magic keyboard! I too feel like storage is not sufficient what do you suggest?
1. As for the ‘click’ you can set it to ‘tap to click’ in setting to avoid the noise. 2. As for awkward opening, rest it vertically on the hinge and fold the keyboard down, rather then moving the display up. 3. I wonder how much of a difference there is on the lap between the 11” and 12.9” 4. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to control volume, brightness, etc with the iPads onboard controls rather than keys. Not really a hassle. Otherwise, yep too expensive, the material is too smudgy, sucks that if there is even a small redesign in the future, this expensive accessory becomes a brick. Also......mine arrives in May. 😁👍🏻
Let me know how you get on with that polyurethane material. That’s pretty much my only sticking point, given the fate of previous Apple keyboards and cases.
Monsieur 'Gill' Sans Honte I actually just cancelled my order. Of all the pros and cons, the one that got me was that $350 was too much to spend on something that could be a brick in the near future. Also my particular workload doesn’t justify the cost. If it had been $200 or even $250 I would have kept it, but $350 is just too much.
Monsieur 'Gill' Sans Honte I am actually very concerned about that because my last case made of this material had to be covered in a vinyl wrap from slickwraps. It looks fine now, but I certainly don’t want to have to go through that again.
It’s hard to separate hype from reality. This pad is expensive and has at least two limitations: 1. It does not protect the sides of the iPad or the iPen, and 2. It lacks function keys. These two limitations were big concerns of mine. I went ahead and bought one and I am very impressed. Quality wise it is the best accessory keyboard I have ever typed on. It is sturdy and holds the iPad with authority. I do wish it protected the iPad more, though. Having now used the keyboard, I am sold on it even with the two drawbacks I mentioned earlier. It is extremely solid and professional. After using it, I intend to keep it. This is a excellent review. Thank you so much.
I found that if you stand it vertically on the back hinge and the pull the bottom cover down, it unfolds nicely. Pulling the top cover up takes a lot of force, but the bottom cover drops right down, especially when vertical. The whole assembly then unfolds easily and snaps into place.
Yup, I was about to type that up in the comments. I just got mine FINALLY a couple weeks go. ‘Twas backordered to hell when I went to order it. Putting it vertically high the charging port on the table and pulling down the keyboard is actually quite natural when you take it out to use.
I’m really tempted to get this for my 2018 iPad Pro (Which I won’t need to replace for years to come IMO). So glad this works with the older model for those of us that aren’t going to upgrade often. My main worry is will it add much bulk - The great advantage of the official smart folio for the pro is how slim it is compared to third party alternatives.
Mine finally came in the other day, and ive pretty much had my ipad mounted on it ever since. It really gives a MacBook feel more than i even expected. Kind of the best of both worlds, feels like a MacBook, but you still get a 120 hertz screen and touchscreen when needed. I even surprised myself the other day when I couldn’t find a good angle to watch a video on the sofa, when I remembered i can just pull the ipad off of the keyboard. It almost makes it feel like a completely new device. I haven’t even touched the screen one time today.
studivan do you even have an iPad Pro? Because if you do, how often are you really dropping it? And if you have the money to spend $1000 on an unnecessary expense like an iPad, $300 for an accessory shouldn’t be breaking your bank or you need to manage your finances better. You don’t have to like the magic keyboard, but other people are allowed to, and that’s ok.
Im typing on the magic keyboard on the 11 pro itself. Its really a must have because at the end of the day this keyboard transforms this tablet into a laptop and adds a lot of functionality to it.
@@studivan Almost every other reviewer talks about how "sturdy" the Magic Keyboard is, when it's either on a table, or on an upwards-sloping lap, or it looks like it's about to topple over.
I enjoyed your review of the Magic Keyboard because of its candid and clear transparency about the pros and cons. One feature you didn't mention was the circular 'cursor' (instead of the usual arrow). I really like it visually and enjoy the ability to scroll and click without the need to touch the screen! Having come from a different iPad Pro keyboard, that is a real breakthrough for me. It was also helpful that you referenced doing a 'cost- benefit' analysis to see if this iPad Pro keyboard's value for individual needs justified the cost and the possibile depreciation of the polyurethane material). You mentioned I believe how the keyboard is top heavy. This can be noticeable when it is not on a firm, flat surface, because it can tumble backwards. Otherwise, the construction of the keyboard is first rate. Thank you for a clear, thought- provoking and informative review!
There’s plenty of room on the bottom on either side of the trackpad for function keys ... how about 2 USB inputs on the bottom hinge ... one for charge one for data ... how about a magnetic strip just above the top row of keys so when you use the ipad and pencil with the keyboard flipped up the iPad stays put ... how about a recoil suspension spring in the main hinge with 3 taps to open up the beast ... and how about some innovative psychedelic colours for the backlighting and optional colourful cases that are attractive and durable ... now that would be magic.
I won’t use an Apple keyboard as it’s not as user friendly as my Logitech one, love the shortcut bar at the top 😃 I hope Apple will do the same one day, then I’ll buy one
Yes good to see it balanced, I don’t get every bodies obsession with being able to open a laptop with one hand.....I’ve had laptops that you can do this with and ones you can’t but I tend to use 2 hands still anyway. You couldn’t open the smart folio keyboard one handed either (not easily)
I just got mine today and imho, it is well worth it if you can afford it. Third party keyboards and external mouse/keyboard just cant compare. Also i got the iPad Pro 2018 12.9 inch.
I have an issue with my trackpad constantly moving the insertion point while typing. I think there is a way to turn the track pad off temporarily in trackpad settings. Apple needs to make a widget that has the brightness, sound and other useful settings that is 9:51 easier to access, not having to go several levels deep to make a change. Great video, very helpful. I saved $50 buying mine refurbished on Amazon. It came in the box like new.
Can you change volume /brightness with it? Or adlist use the trackpad to drop control center for it? Last question is the trackpad made of glass like in a MacBook same quality trackpad?
I love my Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, yes it is a little hard to open but I’m sure I will get use to it after some time. I also love my iPad Pro but have only had it for a week.
I worried that my white keyboard would look dirty from handling over time. After 9 months, it still looks new, unsmudged, and the same color. I guess the black keyboard doesn’t stay as clean looking as the white one. I am very glad I chose the white keyboard. I do miss function keys, but this keyboard is much better than the aftermarket ones I have for my other iPads. I always have trouble plugging my charging cord into the hinge area, especially in the dark. I would like to see Apple recess the edges on the port just a little.
Always love your candid reviews. Very detailed oriented, not worried about pointing out the flaws and you approach these devices from a Pro perspective. That really resonates with me. Keep it up :)
For me, it is easy to close down and also easy to open it. 1. Just close it as close the macbook. 2. To open, put you iPad straight up, then pull down the keyboard side. It come easy and smoothly. Just try it... 😊👌
Hi. When you speak of its hard to open the magic keyboard I realized that I, inadvertently (in a good way) solved that problem by purchasing another case that protects the edges and corners of my iPad while its in my keyboard. That case is called a SwitchEasy CoverBuddy. It provides a pencil holder at the top of my iPad that is pretty awesome and also gives you something to grab to open the whole thing. I bought it on Amazon for $42.99 so along with the magic keyboard makes it an even more expensive package. I believe though if you use your iPad like a computer and a drop would be pretty devastating, it’s worth it. Especially if you use your pencil often. As it charges your keyboard, with this case it also charges your pencil. So its always ready. It allows the keyboard to close completely too. Anyhow just a suggestion. Great information👍🏼🤍
Justin Painter Can you fold it all the way back when using the iPad Pro as a tablet? Like you can with the Smart Folio Keyboard? Or would you need to unclip from the case to use it as a “pure tablet”
Daniel Harris you cannot you do have to detach the iPad to use I do have a regular magnetic folio case as well if I don’t need the keyboard but it is a dream to use and the weight isn’t crazy either
Justin Painter interesting, I could keep the regular folio and folio keyboard if I get the magic keyboard, and just use the magic when I know I need “laptop mode” like when I have the iPad open next to my PC for staying in touch on video calls etc. (My PC can do that, but I can take the iPad with me to get coffee more easily, use my AirPods with it etc.) I still use the regular folio sometimes (Just got a cheap one) when I don’t need the keyboard at all - Around the house I do like to fully detach if I’m just relaxing on the couch browsing. £300 isn’t cheap but I’m saving that by not travelling to the office 5 days a week due to COVID. Just got to wait for the UK release now which I think is a couple weeks away according to Amazon
When this case first came to the stores, I had put in for my pre-order unit. When i first started using it I was very taken with the typing experience from the device. However, like you pointed out, the case works best when using on a flat surface. Which for me, this situation is not always available for myself. Also, I need to be able to type in my car a lot, and I am typing in the driver seat when I am parked, which because of the viewing angles of this device, does not always make it the most convenient. Then 3, of course is the price. 380 with tax for the 12.9 is a hard pill to swallow for something that is not perfect. It is these reasons on which made me choose the Brydge Keyboard over the Magic keyboard. Although the Brydge is not perfect either, the price and the functionality of it is what keeps me glued to it over the Magic Keyboard aord.
I like the Magic Keyboard USB-C port. There are not any Apple fixable USB-C ports on the new iPads so the less use of the only port on the iPad the better. For me, the pass through charge rate is acceptable and I have not been able to find any data for a true comparison of the two methods. Using the iPad port less is a goal for me, and the new keyboard makes this possible.
I just got my Logitech Combo Touch for the Air 3. It really is a great product that is a better value than any of these pro keyboards from Apple. Either way, they’re all great accessories.
Got to agree, that is a top quality case which is exceptional value. The Magic Keyboard is a great item, but the price was hard to swallow when I was ordering...
This video was spot on. The keyboard does show fingerprints from oil in the fingers and lent. I am not looking forward to how this expensive keyboard will hold up through time. The keyboard should also at least have a port to be used for other things besides power. Thanks for reviewing the 11”
great video, i would suggest using magnet sheet to show magnets and their locations, its like a green sheet of plastic that illustrates where and the shape of magnets, its very cool to see
Perhaps just a preference due to usage needs, but I'd say the Apple Pencil is the best ever iPad accessory. I can, if necessary, use some really good Bluetooth keyboards, Magic Mouse and/or Trackpads instead of the Magic Keyboard, but there is nothing out there in 3rd party land that even begins to compete with the Apple Pencil.
I just got mine yesterday and I love it. Only 2 negatives. 1) no place to store your Apple Pencil and 2) the missing utility buttons above the number keys. I’m so used to using a keyboard button to adjust the volume. But, alas, those are MINOR negatives.
I have an expensive ipad for the lack of stuff I do. I just use my ipad for Netflix and books. Basically, travel use only. I use my Macbook Pro for everything else.
I wonder if maybe Apple might add a “virtual function key row” at the bottom of the iPad screen that pops up “somehow” when you need it? It could be kinda like the Touchbar works on Mac Books.
Here it sells for 399 euro for the 12.9 inch version..... thats more then 1/3 of a whole new ipad pro! I went and bought the folio keyboard today and even that was pretty pricey.
If it makes you feel better, I’ll sell you mine for $1000 - no negotiating. I’m very happy with it; I don’t need to carry a mouse with the trackpad, it actually ‘holds’ the iPad with the magnets (that yes adds to the weight) and the weight is perfect in stopping it from ‘flopping over’ like the original version. So weight is not a detriment, it’s a benefit. The keyboard is professional and backlit, and Apple “got it right” as you note. For the business person like myself, it’s perfect. So, on second thought - get your own, mine’s not for sale! Nice video, and I do subscribe as your voice is pleasant and the content is quality.
I like how you said "Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro" every single time you said Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro so we didn't get confused as to what keyboard you were referring to or what iPad this is for. I'm sorry that its so difficult for you to open this.
Gage Taylor I’m starting to get pretty annoyed with popular TH-cam makers padding their videos for time. So many videos have 7-8 minutes of content, padded out to 13-18 minutes. The art of writing/editing has died.
exactly all my ipad cases with polyurethane material starts to flake and peek after some years... don't last as long as my ipad or my other third party cases which is ridiculous considering how much the cases are
I have the iPad Pro 12.9 folio keyboard. With this I am able to sit on my couch and control my desktop apps on my Mac mini over airplay. Will this keyboard allow me to do the same but this time, allow me to control my Mac mini desktop apps with the mouse inputs coming from the magic keyboard trackpad?
Engineering the allowance of data transfer through the smart connector has to be high up the list. It would allow them to offer a model with a USB-C port at either end. Logic, Final Cut and Xcode are probably not far away, and extra I/O would be a high priority for these programmes.
Is there any way to use the keyboard detached? Like a cable or so to connect through the smart connector? It would make it easier sometimes when you draw.
Ok can you connect your sd card from your sony camera now? Because in the 2018 ipad you couldnt, its important for me because i want to buy the 2020 ipad pro and i also have that camera.
Some complain about the missing function keys and brightness volume keys. Apple could fix that without a redesign by adding the same Touch Bar idea they use on the MacBook Pro on the bottom of the screen under the app launch bar or a swipe to the left or right.
Does the keyboard necessarily have to be attached to function?Since it was mentioned that it has no batteries, does that means it’s completely dependent on the iPad? In other words, I can’t detach the iPad and still use the keyboard through Bluetooth connection, and I can’t connect the keyboard to other apple devices like my iPhone, for example?
does the Ipad stick vertically in portait mode on the keyboard? just thinking about the video call for direct look, need to buy this for my Mom, pls reply
I’m curious to see how typing on this keyboard feels compared to the Logitech Combo/Folio Touch. Got the Combo Touch for my iPad Air 3 and ordered the Folio for my iPad Pro 11” M1 that I’ve also ordered. Like the layout of the Logitech better, along with the materials, function keys, and ability to hide the keyboard when watching video content. I would expect Apple’s keyboard to feel better than Logitech’s, but for the price I’m willing to give up a little of the typing experience. Not to mention the Logitech keyboard just looks/feels so much better.
What do you think about just buying the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse or track pad and using them 🤔 I’m torn between this set up or a MacBook Air...
This thing is 100% worth the money! I’m loving mine!
I’m glad you used the 11 inch. No one used it!
The hype for the keyboard is more than the iPad Pro 2020 itself

This looks to be a first class typing experience for the iPad. Can't wait to see it for the 12.9 variant
Tip for opening the Magic Keyboard: Pull the bottom down, don’t pull the top up.
I found that if you stand it vertically on the back hinge and the pull the bottom cover down, it unfolds nicely. Pulling the top cover up takes a lot of force, but the bottom cover drops right down, especially when vertical. The whole assembly then unfolds easily and snaps into place.

Nowhere... Anywhere... Hi Mom! Story of my life.
It was cracking me up when he fixed his wording and said hi mom!
No joke TH-cam gave me a 33 minute unskipable ad
Wut
IPad Pro 2018 is the best
Best $350 ever spent. I would totally do it again.
I just got mine yesterday and I love it. Only 2 negatives. 1) no place to store your Apple Pencil and 2) the missing utility buttons above the number keys. I’m so used to using a keyboard button to adjust the volume. But, alas, those are MINOR negatives.
i bought the smart keyboard folio today and it also doesn't have the function keys so its normal for a apple keyboard to not have this.
I have an expensive ipad for the lack of stuff I do. I just use my ipad for Netflix and books. Basically, travel use only. I use my Macbook Pro for everything else.
I just got the magic keyboard for my iPad Pro 12.9
I wonder if maybe Apple might add a “virtual function key row” at the bottom of the iPad screen that pops up “somehow” when you need it? It could be kinda like the Touchbar works on Mac Books.
Thank you. Very helpful.
Here it sells for 399 euro for the 12.9 inch version..... thats more then 1/3 of a whole new ipad pro! I went and bought the folio keyboard today and even that was pretty pricey.
Great video! Still awaiting mine! First week of may
I’m loving my new magic keyboard!!!!!
Are there any hardshell protective cases on the market yet that let you attach the iPad to the keyboard?
I don’t believe so
thanks for this honest review. totally agree on the cons
I want one badly. Hopefully I can get one soon. 🤞🏽
The art of writing/editing has died.
exactly all my ipad cases with polyurethane material starts to flake and peek after some years... don't last as long as my ipad or my other third party cases which is ridiculous considering how much the cases are
Can you use it for gaming? And does it lay flat with the screen upwards so you can sketch?
It costs as much as a base iPad on sale.... but I’m going to buy it.
One more tip
"Magic" keyboard can vanish your wallet if you want.I tried it and it works. You should do this too.
M~A~G~I~C......
G Mitchell And knowing Apple if they do that, they will add another $200 to the price.
Hello bro could you help me definitely i have a problem i want to know who's best mac or iPad plz bro tell me i want to buy
I probably should stop watching these videos bc I am still waiting for mine to arrive LOL ... back ordered for a couple of weeks!
What do you think about just buying the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse or track pad and using them 🤔 I’m torn between this set up or a MacBook Air...
Let's agree to disagree, Apple Pencil 2 is the best accessory for the iPadPro ever.
Do you get a lead to charge up the keyboard
I really love the keyboard every time I use it, however, the price does not compensate enough for the current state of the product.
I want to purchase one but my concern is if apple change the form factor of iPad Pro on newer models then it’s useless?
