    I had a 10th gen iPad th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

    I’m a teacher and for a long time used my MBA for work. I recently switched to iPad Pro. First I was a bit sceptical, even nervous, using it for work. But boy was I wrong. I think I doubled my productivity especially these days working from home, using skype or Zoom for my classes, sharing documents, using apps to enrich my classes. There’s no turning back to computers for me. I found my absolutely perfect machine. Now if only I could afford the magic keyboard. But it’s OK, my Logitech keyboard and bluetooth mouse do an amazing job since IOS 13.4.

      Pharmakon Same tools here even though I’ve been using the iPad Pro for 4 years already. Just change with the 11” Pro 2020 with its smart folio keyboard.
      Such an awesome combo!!!
      Not interested by the magic keyboard (now water proof, not washable and a bit heavy as portability is the reason of using an iPad...)
      I’ll perhaps buy a trackpad 2 when lockdown is over. I’ll see how:)
      This iPad Pro and smart keyboard folio is the best combo....

      I just purchased an IPad Pro for the same purpose. This video was very enlightening and helped to solidify my desire and need to buy the device. What specs and accessories did you purchase along with the IPad to support your classroom/work productivity...if you don’t mind my asking?

      Hi, not sure what country you teach in, but as a teacher myself, I am considering this but the deal breaker for me has to be, I need to be able to connect it to a Smartboard and also print from it. Is this something you do or are able to do from it?

    • @Anarcath
      @Anarcath 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alan Leggate Hi. I live in Montreal. I don’t know if you can connect to a smart board, though I assume you could. As for printing, it’s really easy to do. My only worry is that when sharing video or audio while screen sharing on Skype, the sound becomes muffled and my students can’t hear anything. I haven’t found a solution to this yet. Hope this helps.

      I will say the magic keyboard that i got for my 2018 ipad pro 11 was so good it made me return the keyboard and sell my ipad on swappa so i could get the 12.9. the 11 inch keyboard is fantastic dont get me wrong, but with the added power and capability the extra size gets me, this really satisfied my itch to get a new laptop, I have a laptop from 2012 and I didnt use my laptop enough to justify spending a grand for a new one, where I use my ipad a lot, and now i have a portable laptop for the little times that im away from my desktop computer at home and i need to get real work done.

    Thank God not another one of those “is iPad Pro a MacBook replacement now?” videos! The iPad Pro is not a laptop replacement, it’s a laptop *alternative*. Like you, the iPad has been my primary computing platform for many years - probably since the iPad 3 or 4, albeit with a different workflow: I’ve been using it for corporate productivity and mathematics and economics research. It’s not so much about having the new keyboard... it’s the trackpad that makes all the difference. Finally no need to lean forward and touch the screen to interact with the interface.

    Based on all the initial reviews, I expected this thing to weigh a lot more. It feels fine. If it’s indeed the same weight as a MacBook Pro 13, it certainly doesn’t feel that way. Having the trackpad, touchscreen, and pencil support all at once is amazing. I’m an “iPad Pro Only” guy too, and this thing just made the experience even better.

    Apple are you seeing this? Maybe next time you’ll rethink who to send your iPad related products to first; went to a bunch of tech fluffers, most of whom have zero credibility but this guy had to wait to submit a quality review like this. Also you’re out of your damn minds charging that much for a keyboard.

      it’s not like any other keyboard case. find another one that has a hinge like that, has usb-c power pass through, is completely magnetic, has backlight adjustment through the sensors on the ipad and has an actually macbook level solid state trackpad. may not be worth $350 in materials and manufacturing, but the features and the amount of r&d that went into this definitely make it worth more than any other keyboard case out there. it might not check everyone’s boxes (protection, function keys (which in that form factor just don’t have space)) but there’s no denying the features set it apart from anything else on the market

    • @acascarano
      @acascarano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can assure you that is worth the $300 that i paid for it. It just transforms your iPad in a way you’ve never experience before. My MacBook Pro (newer model) has no use now after i received my smart keyboard.

    • @MrCaptnKaracho
      @MrCaptnKaracho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@acascarano yeah, sometimes we all waste money. And most of us still try to justify it afterwards...
      A keyboard-design that ignores one of the biggest assets of the device. Even Microsoft understands that you don't really design a 2in1 but a 3in1: Tablet for consumption, laptop for productivity and drawing tablet for creativity (and note-taking). If you make a piece of overpriced addon, you should at least cater all three modes. So: Nice try Apple, but lightyears from good or magic.

    Fantastic review! I have seen a multitude of videos reviewing the magic keyboard and none have taken the time to actually submit a non-bias review with the idea that the iPad Pro is your primary or only device. All the other “pro reviewers” for some strange reason only review the iPad as if video creating and editing is the only thing you can do on it and that’s just not true for the majority. I really enjoyed the review and cannot wait to get mine. Comes in tomorrow! Thanks again.

    Chris, I’ve watched several reviews on this keyboard, and as always, you put so much thought and effort into your videos, and it shines through above all the rest. Your perspective as a full-time iPad Pro user for productivity along with your attention to detail in your videos make your content must-watch for me. I use my iPad Pro heavily alongside my windows desktop PC. I don’t enjoy writing on my PC because it’s just such a large setup and there are too many distractions. I prefer writing on my iPad, and there just hasn’t been a keyboard that I’ve enjoyed using on it. My magic keyboard is getting delivered today, and I’m incredibly excited! Thanks again for your outstanding videos.

    I had my Magic Keyboard delivered around a week ago and I have to say I’m super impressed. I managed to return my Smart Keyboard as was still within Apple’s excellent 2 week return policy and even though this was more expensive it definitely feels justified (although I’m not sure it’s necessarily worth the overall asking price). I use this now as my primary laptop outside of a windows laptop that I have to use for my day job. Everything feels so much better on this - it’s such a versatile set up especially if you have the pencil as well giving you flexibility and the ease of use that few other laptop/computers can. Yes it can’t do everything a laptop can but when I really thought about what I use my personal laptop for (browsing, emails, notes, basic photo/video editing, gaming) this ticks nearly every box.

    I love how you think! You basically explain things exactly the way I like to see when I watch these type of review or tech topic videos. Example, the way you ended this one about getting a frequent question about whether to buy the Magic Keyboard or not ... and how you summed it up at the end. Brilliantly done. I like your style. When I watch your videos, they don't feel like "commercials" of the product. They are informative and you give good opinions/analysis. Keep it up.

    I’ve been a MacBook guy. Love my 2013 MacBook Pro 15”. I like the portability of a laptop. I started watching your videos last year. It caused me to reassess my computer habits and needs. Aside from light use of MacOS apps I had begun to watch sports, movies, videos and read using my MacBook Pro. iPad stuff, right? Your iPad videos are the best!! I like how you focus on how to use the iPad not just it being a computer or not, a laptop replacement or not. Watching your in depth, informative videos inspired me to consider the iPad Pro for where my computer needs are currently and what they might be moving forward, ex. no more cable tv. Upgrade my laptop? Buy an iPad Pro? I purchased the 2020 iPad Pro, 12.9 and Apple Pencil in April. It’s awesome! It’s powerful, versatile and portable. Just what I need and wanted! This new keyboard is very nice but expensive, typical Apple. After watching your video the Magic Keyboard is the right upgrade for me. Keep up the good work!

    I own a business and our software platform is built around a CMS. Historically I always had to have the laptop with me, as you couldn’t get the right click functionality on the iPad. There have been a couple of browsers that I have used, but those moved from the IOS platform. I ordered the Magic Keyboard and guess what, the right hand click functionality is there, it works. I look forward to moving more on to my iPad and further away from my PC. Love the keyboard.

    Typing this on my magic keyboard. This thing has turned my ipad into a MacBook replacement for me since I don’t need it for much more than email, internet browsing, and content consumption. Ive logged into accounts with the ipad using safari and received emails about a new account log in from a Mac, so i guess when they say desktop web browsing, they really do mean it. The iPad Pro with the magic keyboard really does feel like a smaller MacBook Pro only with an amazingly bright 120 hertz touch screen. Feels like a win/win to me.

    Great review! I picked up mine last week and after a bit of adjusting, I am loving the experience with the Magic Keyboard. My only gripe is that I wish the iPad could lean back just a hair further. The passthrough charging seems to be fine. It’s a bit slower, but nothing egregious. The typing is a dream. It’s a little cramp on the 11-inch, but the typing experience is so much better than the Smart Keyboard Folio.

    My 12.9 Gen 5 iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard is best laptop I've ever had. The floating position of the screen is perfect for me. On other laptops I have used the size of the keyboard and trackpad simply puts the screen too far away for my vision. It's also the most expensive laptop I've ever owned. I bought it on a whim while buying a new iPhone for my son without paying much attention to how expensive it was, I'm glad I didn't, but I still be paying on it for another 6 months at least.

Excellent review and well made video again, keep it up. Side note... I hope you don’t have neck/ spine issues like me. I notice you lean your head forward while using your iPad like I do. I constantly catch myself having to straighten up my posture or else the neck issues creep back. Just an observation from a neck pain sufferer who seems to always be looking down at a device. But then again, who doesn’t do that these days, lol.

    I have the iPad Pro 11 as a travelling computer, and a Surface Book 2 15" as my main device. I do love the new iPad Pro and all its new features: I always used to think of it as a media consumption and capable only of playing mediocre mobile games. Now, with the Magic KB, Apple Pencil, a portable BT mouse, 1TB USB-C external SSD, a Baseus multi-port hub and a pair of AirPod Pros that all fit into a slender bag, I find it's now a real mobile powerhouse.
    But one thing I've noticed on a lot of Magic KB reviews, that they comment on the wobble at the top of the screen, but are prepared to forgive it. Yet many reviews of the Surface Book, which has the same issue of CPU, memory and a battery all in the screen/Clipboard. Yet many of the same reviewers excoriate the SB for this as if it's a deal-breaker.
    I have never got the hang of taking notes on a vertical screen. If I want to take notes on the Surface Book, I press the detach button and pull off the screen, and write with it on my lap. It doesn't have brilliant battery life in tablet mode, but it does have a second Surface Connect port at the bottom of the screen if you need to top it up.
    I do the same with the iPad Pro, which is even easier off than the SB (although even strong men can't pull the screen off an SB if they don't push the button; it's quite amazing), and of course, the iPad Pro has even better battery life without the KB, because it's powering it.
    If you'd told me five years ago that an iPad could ever replace the Surface Pro 4 I had as my mobile computer for years, before I accidentally dropped her on concrete just before the lockdown, I would have shaken my head in disbelief. But the iPad, once an overpriced toy to me, has finally grown up, and it's a powerful, totally credible, work computer.

    Personally, I’m waiting for Logitech to come up with a more affordable alternative. $300-350 is far too much to spend on an iPad case that doesn’t even have a row of iPadOS shortcut keys - for that price it should be a full-on USB-C hub and rugged waterproof protection.

      @Seven V sure buddy, even Apple release a water resistant keyboard with function row keys I hope that you don't buy it, since they are stupid, if this is a laptop replacement then it should be mandatory to have function keys, but you're just a fanboy who would defend Apple even if they release a device that doesn't turn on, so GTFO

    Excellent video 👌
    I'm happy that this isn't another video telling me that an iPad cannot replace a laptop!
    How do those reviewers know what *I* need..?
    Of course an iPad can replace a laptop.. and ably so.
    I also enjoy taking pictures with my iPad pro.. despite tech reviewers telling me it's illegal and foolish!

    I’m the exact same, I transitioned completely to an iPad Pro as my only computer other than the Windows PC I have at the office. Although now that we’re in quarantine, my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” is my sole computer. I have the Smart Keyboard Folio and I recently got a Magic Trackpad 2 thinking I wouldn’t need the Magic Keyboard case because of the price and the Smart Keyboard Folio is actually a decent typing experience. But lately I’m finding it isn’t. I type a lot, my work is consistently typing up reports and I find I use a lot of acronyms through my day. The Smart Keyboard Folio CAPS lock button no longer works for me since iPadOS 13 (all it does now is cycle replicate the Globe button switching software keyboards). There’s no fix for this. I’ve read that the Magic Keyboard doesn’t have this issue and that it works as intended. Is that correct? Does it also lift the iPad slightly higher to a more comfortable position for video calling? Now that I’m working from home, Zoom & FaceTime get a lot more use (glad the iPad Pro 2018 has a better front camera than any MacBook or iMac) and I’d be interested if the floating design brings the device closer. I’m very much interested in your thoughts on these two questions before I sink $500+ CDN on this keyboard. I don’t want a MacBook, I’m fine with the iPad but I need to know if this keyboard is worth such the hefty investment (more so in Canada than it is in the US). Thanks.

    I love my 6th gen iPad and have no intention of upgrading for a few years but by then it might actually be worth it for me to get this setup. That is assuming I have a desktop set up for my heavier work, I am learning to do a bunch of my design work with Procreate and Affinity Designer but my current iPad is not powerful enough to do very big raster files. I look forward to the growth in the next 4-5 years (bring back the headphone jack!) and a protective sleeve for when the iPad is in “tablet mode” sans keyboard that still allows easy connectivity/removal

    I have a solution to the function row ... a new gesture (swipe up from bottom right or left), and replace the dock icons with a function key row, and. allow user to configure that row with anything including shortcuts).

  • @JeremyDeBose
    @JeremyDeBose 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You’re the first person I’ve heard say what I said: a function row would throw off the proportions and make the keyboard half too long or you’d have to push the screen farther away. (lack of that function row is one reason I won’t get it)

    I tried the Magic Keyboard when it first came out, but when using it I was wishing that it was more like a laptop clamshell design than the floating design. I was waiting for the Brydge Pro + keyboard to come out, not because of the TracPad, but because of the clamshell design. When i tried the original Brydge keyboard, it just felt like keyboard keys just took too much force for them to register your presses. Since owning the Brydge Pro + keyboard, I have not felt that at all. The typing experience is much more enjoying on the Pro + over the original. I also, prefer the keyboard on Pro + over the Magic Keyboard not just for typing but because it just feels like their is more room on the Pro + keyboard and I love the fact that I have gained function keys.

    Thanks for the review. I’d appreciate a solid, stationary profile shot of the keyfolio vs Magic keyboard, from the top laying flat, and from the edge. For people who have specific carrying set-ups, the added girth and width over the smart folio is important information.

    I think a good solution for the lack of FN Keys to change the keyboard brightness is that Apple allows to add those functions in the quick settings menu in the top right corner.

    Great to see, was really looking forward to this one. Have been coming to you for true ios power user tips and workflows since the ios 10 days really impressive to see how much you have improved in the last few years. Also crazy just how much has ios/ipados changed over the years now that hell has seemingly frozen over and we have even gotten to the point of having proper mouse support, tho I still miss being able to set my wallpaper to a slideshow from way back when :)

    Late comment, but I just have to say thanks for such a comprehensive review. I love all the work you put into this!
    For context: I've owned iPads over the years but have only really owned them for very specific things -- ie drone flying, sales, zwift. I never took them seriously outside those roles, and was never willing to give up desktop computing and big screens. But iPads have evolved to be such wonderfully capable devices, and now with the Apple pencil and this keyboard it may well turn into my principal machine. It has changed so many industries that people don't even see... ie all documentation on the flight deck of commercial aviation. People credit many Apple products with changing the world.... but it may be the iPad that has changed it most.....though it is often hidden from public view.
    Even old guys like me can change.....my first Mac was a Mac SE with 1mb of ram, so do the math about my age :)

    IPad just feels more simple and powerful, at the same time, than using macOS. I like the ability to use one device all the time. I remember when they were trying with Windows to switch everything to the phone and you could plug your phone in to get a desktop experience. One device to rule them all, sounds fine to me!

    Now with the magic keyboard the iPad Pro can kind of compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro series but not fully as it has more ports, expandable storage, and a full desktop grade OS (Windows 10 Pro) all of which the iPad Pro don't have. This don't make the iPad Pro a bad product at all and as I always said "Get what works for you." If I ever got a device that can be a 2 in 1 device for work me personally would choose the Microsoft Surface Pro series but for the price of it what I do on a tablet don't need a power house type device like the iPad Pro or Surface Pro series also I'd always choose an Android device as I just love the way it works compared to iOS or iPad OS it's just my personal preference. Good video I definitely enjoyed it.

    Some of the things that I think would make this Magic Keyboard perfect is if the USB C port for charging was on both sides and if the ports also enabled data. That would probably need more pins on the Smart Connector but it shouldn't be impossible to make it backward compatible with the older models by positioning the pins in a way that wouldn't change the layout of the original pins.

    My MacBook Pro 2017 is likely my last Apple laptop. From drawing to light photo and video edits, my 2019 iPad Pro does most everything I need. After my MacBook Pro stops working, I’ll likely replace it with a Mac mini or iMac, mainly for work, but only if adobe doesn’t have full featured photoshop and indesign for iOS by then.

    An excellent review! 💯
    This is the best, most balanced and fully rounded review and coverage of the Magic Keyboard, bar none. Great work Chris! 🙌
    [Puts my short coverage of this keyboard in the shade...] By the way the 11” iPad can easily be taken off of the Magic Keyboard and de-dock without issue. I’m so pleased that Apple was able to make the 11” and 12.9” keyboards *both* exceptional for each size. For me this was the best £300 I’ve spent since buying the 11” iPad Pro. Looking forward to your future content!

    I’ve been using a Logitech keyboard for years with my standard iPads (latest is gen 5) and only use my laptop when I need to access physical storage. These days with Dropbox, you really don’t need flash drive. Why we still have to wait for a laptop to boot is beyond me, the iPad is the fastest way to interact with a computer.

    It seems to be typing style that makes some hit the screen, because I know a few people who suffer from the same issue, but I haven’t had any issues here. I also know a couple of others who haven’t either. Maybe it depends if you’ve been typing for a living fro longer. I don’t rely on typing as much, just occasionally. It’s is pretty hefty, but I’m prepared to put up with the extra weight for easier navigation of apps. The trackpad makes slide over a lot easier to use with the three finger gesture, but the way to invoke slide over is a bit weird. Strong rumours that Logic, Final Cut and Xcode coming are the final piece in the jigsaw, then it’s just improving the system overall incrementally.

    Excellent video. I bought the 12.9 with the keyboard but I'm waiting for it to be delivered. I have MacBook Pro and the battery isn't good anymore. I debated between both but decided that I'd rather spend the money and get a two in one and by all accounts everything is better about the iPad Pro. I will have to adjust to the learning curve but I use my laptop for normal everyday task and some photo editing. I will have to learn the file system but I'm excited for the keyboard to be delivered tomorrow. I appreciate your straight forward review as to why and how you use it and enjoy it. I know that I didn't need the 12.9 but since it will be my 'laptop' now, I wanted the bigger screen.
