This is actually such incredible advice. I studied physics and every lecture made me feel so stupid. I thought I was, but 'feeling stupid' is actually the first step to learning. The second step is asking questions, and having the courage to do so. I wish I did this. Brilliant!

Maybe it’s that I started college at a different maturity level but asking questions made me feel better. Most of the time everyone didn’t think of asking them so it saved everyone time. Also pointing out mistakes that made have occurred when posting items by the professor. Most of all it engages you in a different way, of course the downside is getting someone of track and things taking longer than they should or having your question avoided and not really answered thus wasting your time.

    • @MikeyManfs
      @MikeyManfs 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@brayan8346 my favorite thing to do is stay after class to listen to the questions other people are asking the professor. Those are the questions that are great to hear because usually it’s a question you wouldn’t have thought to ask but you’re glad you got to hear the answer!

I am a junion taking AP physics in highschool and I wanted to ask how you were able to ask all these questions during the lesson, as well as how are do you not get lost in just making more and more questions if for example you dont understand a topic and that topic is needed to move onto the next topic and since you dont understand it you are then not able to engage in the topics and so on. Should I just make sure I know the topic fully before moving on? or should I save all the questions for later and try and study on my own time?

As a medical student, you totally opened up my mind and revolutionized the way I study. You have shifted my paradigm about studying that it isn't just a passive process, but an active one. Our brain works by answering question and our main job in learning is challenging it by asking questions and identifying problems. It isn't just plain memorizing and parroting. Thank you Samuel!

No matter how complex any project might seem at first, once I started writing down all the questions that came to my mind, all these smaller problems would become much more manageable. Sam, I’m not try to get overly dramatic but your videos blessed my life and really saved me from a life shipwreck. My story. I’m a 42 year old. I just retired from the United States Marines as a senior officer. I have undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science. I know how to learn and achieve. However, during my career I was injured in Iraq and have PTSD. Fast forward to now since retiring I’ve been pursuing my long time goal of becoming a dentist. Since it was 22 years from undergrad I decided to take all the prerequisites again fresh to do well on the DAT and well...just be a good student. My first semester was horr-r-ble! I barely passed. Barely passed subjects with skills I demonstrably mastered before. I was depressed and about to quit. I notice on my own how disorganized I was relative to my undergrad. I have a box that contains all my notes and exams from my engineering school. Neat and arranged. Going back to school today I was all over the place; total disaster. I didn’t mention I have 5 daughters now! Lol At any rate the long period of time away from school, the PTSD, the new life responsibilities, and disorganization point to some real executive functioning challenges. I have a much to work on the front but this semester as been so much better. Why? I watched all your videos and it motivated me. I got the IPad Pro 12.9 and I settled on Goodnotes even though I bought both apps. This organization is a game changer. Your video about combining notes, slides, and personal study were phenomenal. I don’t get as stressed out and I feel like I’m actually learning. I’d like to send you a study guide I easily made on Goodnotes; I’m kinda proud of it. Lol. Keep doing what you’re doing. I think you’re gonna be the Khan Academy of executive functioning. 🙏😃❤️ Ron

As I was watching this I began thinking how I could apply this to post college life. I have a lot of things I like to research and learn and often I have a combo of notes and media about these things . From this video and others I plan to try and start creating digital notes with images , video links etc that condense all the information that works for me. I’m adhd and lazy so I’ll likely just keep watching videos lol but, the idea is I think the concept is applicable even if your not in classes.

This video, better than most others, has helped me understand how I can best succeed with new note taking habits and ideas. It also makes me even more excited to utilize my new iPad Pro in lecture. Even though I have not watched your whole video I love it. And as someone who loved to study I could relate to your questioning. I also wonder if you felt this way, but there were many times when I studied large amounts of information and thought, “I’ll never learn all of this.” But the incredible thing was that there was always more in my brain than I thought. I think even if sometimes if feels as if our brains shut off and studying feels passive at times, if you keep looking at it and keep trying it finds itself into our brains. I found that so incredible.

Hey Samuel, I happened to stumble upon your video.
I've been thinking of switching to paperless notes ever since I gained interest in learning how to do digital art.
My senior year of high school in the midst of online schooling was a wreck, for lack of a better term. I barely passed by the skin of my teeth, even with the encouragement and help of my teachers who went above and beyond for me. It was so bad I took an academic gap year to recover from it all.
I look at my upcoming first year of college with a healthy dose of fear. While I can't say it's completely gone after watching this video, I can say it's taken the edge off of it.
Thank you very much for posting this.

Great video! It took me a long time to understand that embarrassingly simple idea of just asking questions. I remember being told all through school, from kindergarten to post-secondary to "ask questions". I think a lot of people take it for granted because they don't want to appear foolish or unknowledgeable. It's a lot less foolish asking a question than hiding that you don't know and never learning it.
Keep asking questions! Even outside of a typical learning environment, keep asking questions. Worst case you get told to go away, best case is you might get some hard-earned knowledge for free. Even then I find most people who are passionate about their work or hobby are more than happy to answer questions you have.

Wow! Just wow! I am a teacher and as my students are switching to digital devices over the last year, i begin to notice that many of them are struggling with their note taking... they would sometimes just write everything down as fast as they could, or don´t write down anything at all, maybe take a picture of a friends screen after the lesson. So before teaching them about the subject, i now absolutely will adress the methods that could be helpful for them. But what really hits me about your video is not the advice on how to take proper notes, but it is your approuch to learning (non-digital or digital). You are just so motivational, positive and authentic! I loved watching this video!!

Great work Samuel and glad I stumbled on your video. Learning how to learn is the key and I can recall 30 years ago when reading my science degrees (real ones like yours not social science ones), when I realised the power of revision. Writing out ones notes as you do on your iPad really cements the learning. So many students think revision is just for swotting up prior to exams - it's not of course as you know.
Those epiphanies I would get when seeing almost feeling how complex polynomial calculus calculations worked fuelled a perpetual desire near addiction to have more such lightbulb moments.
Thanks mate and keep up the good work. I'll be sharing this with my kids for sure now the tech is here especially.

Good work Samuel, this video was great. You changed the way I see lecture heavy classes, it’s not about grasping every bit of information during class. It’s about our learning and studying habits to re-learn and reinforce information in our own personal way of understanding.
Also with the iPad, at the end of the video you said people think it will instantly click. I was one of those people. It is truly about the person and their efficiency to learn and understand to eventually transfer over knowledge to a physical or digital medium, regardless if its an iPad.

Note taking is the exact same creative process by taking the ideas and concepts from multiple sources and placing it into your own THING.
Thanks for really opening my mind to note taking!

But you brought much more light into my chaotic mind than I expected it for this evening.I just startet with my medical lectures in october and sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming….so thank you so much. When I first started watching your video, I thought I would simply learn new ways to use my iPad Pro. By the end I was thinking way beyond that. This way of breaking things down and building them up might be a life changing way for me to apply in my job AND in my personal life. I manage digital Product Owners and I am looking for a way to: First & foremost - describe what a PO’s role is within my company; then secondly - describe all the various parts of the PO’s job showing how they interact with other areas/roles within the company. Most (or All) of the people I work with are visual learners. I will challenge myself to apply & adapt what you’ve taught in this video to accomplish that goal. In my personal life I would like to apply this process with my interest in learning/creating art (painting with various media) to help take my skills as an artist to the next level. So excited to have stumbled across your video! Thank you for posting this.

This was incredibly helpful! For years and years I've struggled to scribble notes as fast as I could trying to keep up with slides and then look over them later and try to figure out what they were trying to say and feel like a idiot when I couldn't understand. I hadn't ever considered making my questions such a high priority. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this. Subbed.

growing up, i always took notes in class. i always did well on assessments which equated to all the adults around me calling me smart and gifted. i then got to university without really being told what to expect, and lo and behold, my current method was not working. i tried taking notes on my laptop using Word, basically just copying down what was on the slides, and i thought that was enough, until i got to my assessments and my grade reflected that it definitely was not. im in third year now, my first year with an ipad as my main notetaker, and i can't believe i even made it this far without it. this video also really helped me because i never knew how to put my struggles into words and i feel like you solved them without me even knowing what they were. thanks so much for this.
