I’m sorry but you’ve severely understated the challenge to assemble this cargo box. It took me hours by myself (with occasional help from another). Absolutely ridiculous. AND getting it on my SUV was another adventure. I will happily spend an extra $500 to upgrade to a box that comes assembled, and I can get on and off my car with little effort.
Cathy, you don't necessarily need the bars, I have seen people just use ratchet straps to hold these down however I do not recommend using that method to hold it in place as they are designed to use the cross bars. Hope this helps!
No comment on how difficult it is installing the u bolt on the front hinge side. You need monkey arms to reach inside to tighten the knobs all while holding the u bolt underneath with your other hand. Horrible design.

Do you need those bars because the replacement kit comes with U-boats
