      Not everyone wants to drive a mini van or suv even they take the car for a family trip. Only in America it’s almost a rule that if you have one baby people need an SUV or mini van.. in europe it’s normal if you have 2 kids that you still drive your sedan or hatchback

      @@jdnrotterdam2150 You've got that right. As a person from the U. S. (from a 17th century New England family) I witness so much waste that I want to vomit. But if a country contains about 0.04% of the world's population and yet consumes, conservatively, at least 25% of the world's natural resources, its population too, can be wasteful, wanton, uncaring, and just plain greedy.

      @@lanalorenzen - Your post reminded me of a day when some friends visited with their newly-adopted two year old son. The new father had been easy to spot on the roads because of his green convertible. It was gone, replaced by a minivan, a horrible one at that. When I asked, "Why a minivan?", he said "because of him." He pointed to his tiny son, sitting alone in the back of that cavernous van. It was the funniest excuse for driving a minivan I had ever seen. That boy remained an only child; so, it's not as if they needed the extra seating. ;-)

      HAHA! Thanks! I used to experiment with different music, but never really liked it if it was too loud. My goal is to have sound other than my voice, but without being overwhelming. Sometimes I get a good mix; sometimes I don't. These days, I taper the music after the intro and bring it back for the closing. It makes for consistent videos, but not necessarily an exciting viewing experience. ;-)

    Just wanted to let you know that to help protect your paint you could buy some racer's/helicopter tape which is translucent, put this down on/around your mounting points so your paint doesn't get scratched up. That tape works well to protect your bikes too, lots of people use it on gravel bikes especially.

    One other disadvantage of the roof rack box is the height of the vehicle. Depending on the original height of the vehicle plus the box , it is something to consider when going into low parking garages. Also where I live on an island, taking the ferry to main land is an extra cost due to the height of the vehicle being considered a Large truck.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed on the height of the box, depending on the vehicle. My combination is around 6'3"; so, I probably wouldn't enter any structure that's not at least 6'6". In my opinion, your ferry is gouging their customers. I think the idea of charging "large truck" costs is to recover the revenue lost when vehicles with a large footprint reduce the space available for more smaller vehicles. Charging a large truck fee for a compact car that weighs less than 4000 lbs (loaded) is ridiculous. BUT, when you live on an island, I guess you put up with any BS associated with getting to and from... Thanks for visiting.

    Thanks for this, I have been looking at a roof rack for a while and this gave me some food for thought. I'd still rather have a roof box than a bumper rack but I don't think I can ignore the fact that a 5'x8' utility trailer would probably haul anything I could even need to. Anything bigger and I'd be better off renting a u-haul van for the $50 it'd cost me.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every now and then I wish I had just a little more floor space over my 3.5x5-ft "baby trailer." A 5x8 is a great size and very versatile. I rented a 6x10 on two separate occasions to transport my baby trailer for work. It was like "nesting dolls" for trailers. ;-) For the most part, the baby does great for my regular needs. In fact, routine use of a trailer was the driving factor behind me buying my first trailer or $200 over 20 years ago. Once I rented, I could see a trailer being useful enough that buying would be cheaper than renting over the long run. Thanks for visiting!

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! Oddly enough, I had some marring on my roof from long-term rooftop cargo box mounting during a recent 7400-mile road trip. I'm getting the paint reconditioned by a pro soon. I'm also going to test a truck box on a hitch basket. Sure, it carries just half as much as a rooftop cargo box. But the truck box will ride in the car's draft (better fuel economy) and not touch the paint. I'll share a video in the coming months. Thanks for visiting!

    For putting on the roof rack get some Vinyl wrap and put it where the racks connect then you don’t have to worry about the paint

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip. I've considered that, but I think the vinyl would simply relocate the problem. I recently returned from a trip that had the rack on the car for over a month. The paint looks marred. However, I'm fairly certain that what I'm seeing is actually mineral deposits from rain water. I think they'll come up with polishing. My point is that the edges of the vinyl wrap are just as visible as the mineral deposits. The visible mineral deposits will be gone as soon as I have the weather I need to polish them away. Thanks for visiting.

    You do not mention height? I am worried what height limitations in parking garages etc would bring. Been looking at boxes below 40cm height, or lower mounted bars, to keep total height below 2 meters. But found nothing yet.

      I intentionally omitted height discussions since nearly every viewer's car is different from mine. Plus, some crossbars have more roof clearance than others. Also, some boxes ride lower than others due to the way their floors are designed. Regarding rooftop baskets, I've shared a video at th-cam.com/video/3B4WySXPLJw/w-d-xo.html that compares baskets to boxes. Have a look and see if you find it to be helpful. Thanks for visiting!

    Is that 165 lb total weight... Or per square foot sort of thing... Your roof rack is going to distribute the weight 165 lb sounds very low for a whole roof with a roof rack distributing the weight...hmmm... I'm going to have to look into this before I waste my time on a roof carrier... Great video though...

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment on the video! The 165 lbs is total weight, including the weight of the rack itself. You'll find that's a fairly standard weight limit for passenger cars. Even many SUVs are limited to 165 lbs. Check your owner's manual. More robust (and expensive) racks, particularly those that bolt to the roof and are designed with endurance and overlanding mind, have higher capacities. But the vehicle's owner's manual will still show a limit that may surprise you. I think some racks that attach to pickup truck bed rails go to 500 lbs. Thanks for visiting!

    Good overview although evidently over the head of Ali Salem. With a SUV everything inside is in sight and tempting thieves. Even if nothing of value is stolen a broken car window takes time to replace and is a major problem in the middle of a trip. The cargo box is the least bad solution for people with an SUV or hatchback.

    • @StealthGTI

      Yup, you're right! I had a window busted and stereo stolen in San Antonio when my wife and I visited for our 10th anniversary. Thankfully, our drive to my parent's place was only 100 miles and the weather was nice enough to travel without a window. LOL! I did manage to get the glass replaced before our 700-mile drive home, though. The retint never matched the original. Thankfully, the thief looked no further than the stereo. Just as in my current car, he was sitting on a gold mine and never knew it since I hide my stuff. Thanks for visiting!

      W S - I'm not sure what kind of car you load, nor what's on your rack. I used to load my complete package when all I had on the rack was four bicycle mounts. However, working alone, it's very difficult for me to imagine how I'd be able to lift away or (especially) put in place a rack that's pre-loaded to 65 lbs without the foot pads or clips damaging my roof or paint. With help, I still would not want to risk damaging the roof or paint if a foot pad clip is misaligned. I suspect I'd remove the clips to reduce the risks, which is time-consuming. Even if we were to get the rack with box on the roof, there would still be minor adjustments needed. I'd rather make those adjustments with no weight on the rack. In short, I think loading the way I have demonstrated is the safest way to do it without risking paint damage. Of course, if I was loading onto a beater that doesn't matter, then I guess I'd be all for doing it your way. ;-) I'm curious to know more specifics about what's on your rack and what you load your rack onto. Thanks for visiting! -Scott

    Intro too long, I don't really care about all that. I don't see how the rooftop cargo box effects the paint in any way seeing as how it doesn't even touch it, but if you're so anal about the paint, use a sealant instead of wax or better yet, some PPF. Clear visual text for pro versus con sections and what number of pro or con would go a long way.

    your fuel economy suffered because you bought a cargo box too big for your car and the front of the box goes out from the front end of your windshield so your aerodynamic was compromised. change your car or buy smaller box

    • @StealthGTI

In the UK and I all the EU if you cover your licence plate you need to get a second plate and attach it to the trailer or bumper mounted bag. It is illegal to drive with your licence plate obscured. in fact you can get fined and points on your licence even if you licence plate is obscured by mud.

Some other vehicle have fixe crossbar spreads, too. I've found etrailer.com to be a great place for researching specifications all in one place. Some boxes can accommodate very wide crossbar spreads.
