I've built at least 100 of these at trade shows etc. It's sooooo much easier to install the spring hinges first. Once they are installed, which is very easy, you just lift the lid and prop it up with a piece of 2x4 or something. Then you simply align the hinge side and it becomes very easy to attach the hinge. It shows it back wards in the instructions. It can easily be done with one person this way.
Haha where were you when I was putting this bad boy together! I will have to remember that if I ever get a different one!

No comment on how difficult it is installing the u bolt on the front hinge side. You need monkey arms to reach inside to tighten the knobs all while holding the u bolt underneath with your other hand. Horrible design.

Great series of videos. Just had my Sportrack box delivered today. I decided to go with the ski type box, mainly for the contoured look, and it was completely assembled already. Going to throw it on the Suburban this weekend and see how it works Thanks

Do you need those bars because the replacement kit comes with U-boats
Cathy, you don't necessarily need the bars, I have seen people just use ratchet straps to hold these down however I do not recommend using that method to hold it in place as they are designed to use the cross bars. Hope this helps!

I’m sorry but you’ve severely understated the challenge to assemble this cargo box. It took me hours by myself (with occasional help from another). Absolutely ridiculous. AND getting it on my SUV was another adventure. I will happily spend an extra $500 to upgrade to a box that comes assembled, and I can get on and off my car with little effort.

Yep. And I found the written instructions to be terrible.
I got frustated with the hinges...did anybody had the issue that no matter how hard you try it didn't tighten? This is for sure a 2 person job

was about to assemble this the hole for the lock is too small correct in this video I will either have to return it and hope the replacement is correct or drill the hole out the instruction parts do not match the actual parts made in america? manufacture screw ups 0 out of 10 for quality control.
Thanks for this, would you recommend this over the JEGGS 18 cubic feet roof box. I am debating between this style OR a metal roof basket with a water resistant back for the carrier.
