I remember watching this video years ago and since then I keep coming back to this video every few months or so. Definitely my favourite The Weekender episode, not only because of how beautiful the kitchen turned out but the homeowner is the sweetest, cutest person to be on The Weekender ever. She radiates so much positivity, it gives me hope :) .
I think the problem with the original kitchen (other than that the owner didn't like the look) was it just looked old like it was falling apart. maybe when first built it was very nice for it's day
Monica is the full package: she is funny, smart, creative, beautiful, talented... basically just amazing. There can’t be too many seasons of the weekender. I can’t wait to see the new ones 😃
This makeover captures the sweet homeowner's quirky personality and style, while matching the rest of the house. The cringe-worthy floor paint colors turned out to be the magic sauce that melds the floor, stair rail and brick design, adding whimsy to an otherwise stale and heavy space. Favorite Weekender to date!
I love the new kitchen although I didn't think the original was terrible - not as good as the new one, obviously, but I thought she was a bit over the top when she said she was embarrassed by it. Great reno and I love the butcher's block type countertop. I'm redoing my small kitchen soon and I've got the same for my countertop, so I may be a bit biased :). I really did like the floors and the barrier. A friend of mine has the same thing only from floor to ceiling in place of a balistrade on her staircase in her house and I love the look of it.
Matthew Olsen Mine too. I'm doing mine up soon, but I'm certainly not embarrassed by it, it's just an old, crappy kitchen and I want to make it more functional and easier to keep clean. When she said that, I just thought "You're far too easily embarrassed, m'dear".
I have that feeling when I see most of the places they make over. The bathroom a while back was in perfect condition. It's often just a matter of taste, not really the abysmal state of the room. Probably what we would call "first world problems" :). End result was very nice btw!
Thought the “before” kitchen was cute and whimsical, but I absolutely love the transformation! This is one of the first times I’ve seen a type of style that I feel like suits my own personality and what I want for my own home down the road.
I love the kitchen but the old kitchen wasn’t as retched as she made it out to be. I could totally have lived with it until I got a new one and would have done so happily. It was old but quirky and who doesn’t love quirky?!
That "old kitchen" was totally adorable with usable space. But the basement drop was TERRIFYING. I couldn't have even lived there with that pit yawning at me.
I felt the same. I would've changed the table and railing, but the rest I could've lived with until I saved up for a more substantial reno (like the chimney issue).
Whoa!! This was an amazing transformation and the death trap basement. How cute is Katelyn and her mom made me cry, too. So glad Monica fixed that basement area. So beautiful :))
I love the simple and cost effective way you blocked that hazard space by the basement steps. It came out so beautiful, the stain matched her existing staircase perfectly!
Not going to lie, I was hardcore side-eyeing Monica when she was showing the paint for the floor panels, but I love the end result! And those wood slats on the stairs to help keep people from falling down the basement stairs... they look so good!
chezlin I was just going to comment the same thing regarding the floor. This is the first video of this channel that I’ve watched so I was honestly thinking “wtf..? It looks like it was going to look so nice until now!” Lol.
Monica is such an inspiration for non-professionals... DIY-ing can be easy and sophisticated... Those floors! And of course, the Mom! You made them cry! Good job! ❤
This is my favourite Weekender makeover, I think. Tiny rooms are so tricky to style for form and function but wow... this one works beautifully! And how sweet is Katelyn? Very cool makeover indeed!
OMG I'm so happy I came across this channel, I think Monica is amazing and very talented. I wish I could hire her to do my house renovation. I can see myself trusting her in her recommendations ... very talented woman! Great job
Monica made this small kitchen look fresh & fun -it really reflects the homeowners personality. So glad to see tile other than subway tile!! A creative, funtional & cool space that's do-able for homeowners:)
Very nice! Great balance of contemporary, vintage-y feel, warm and inviting, functional, stylish but down to earth and bright and airy. Really love the floors! I knew when she unveiled the colors in would be stunning. Love the sink, too! I want this kitchen! Would love the whole house. It looks charming. Really well done! 👍🏽
This renovation is amazing! My favorite is the under-stair project. It made that space completely safe, but with so much beauty and style. it really elevated and completed the kitchen for me. I also like the backsplash tiles and the flooring! For me, it is a really cohesive kitchen without being a "matched up" space--lots of character.
My favorite, though it's all beautiful, is what you did to hide the basement steps. Absolutely love how it showcases the brick but most importantly, you made it safe. Great job!
being a small homeowner myself, i am soooo impressed! it's amazing how u fit so much style into this small space! maybe you can make your next video re-doing my kitchen?
This may be my favorite of all the Weekender Designs. I’ve been building and making projects of various sizes for almost forty years and you really surprised me with that floor concept. Absolutely fantastic!
I was about to cry when I saw the mom reaction, so sweet and lovely how turning a space can bring such happiness :), thank you Monica . I wish I have someone magical like you over my space to turn it to more welcoming house :)
Wow, what a great job! I was very worried about the flooring when the colours were revealed but it looked fantastic. The whole thing worked out so well 👍🏻
The smiles you put on people's face is when they see their project complete is priceless and no amount of wealth will ever match that.... Keep up the good work lady!!! You Rock....
Really beautiful. Gave me some ideas for my own. Funny how some "clients" show almost nothing through the process (faux concrete wall episode) but thrilled at the end. Katelyn was smiling huge the whole time. I love the coziness of the kitchen....I didn't think it was that bad before (except for the table that just didn't go...) But now....it is cozy AND inviting...
Hey, I thought the same thing about the old kitchen (just get rid of that table and do something about the "safety gate crate"); no need to call in Monica. (=p) But, good thing Monica came and waved her magic wand!
Someone turn off the tap, my eyes are leaking! This turned out so nice, and the craziest part is that it looks like it's always meant to be this way. I love that it still matches the rest of the house so well 😍
Wow! Creative and great use of available space. The wood countertops and shelves, the distressed and multi-colored floor, and the great looking backsplash, all worked.. The wooden slats blocking off the basement and accenting the stairs looked amazing. Her kitchen was truly transformed to a beautiful space she can be very proud of.
I WISH I could be THAT comfortable with power tools! My house needs so much work and with so many scam artists out there, a small budget for a reno is super hard to lose...I'm ready to finally fix my "tiny kitchen", too! Monica I really need your magic wand!
That 🙈slated wall and floors and tile with that butcher block is Everything 🙈but THOSE slated Walls in front of the brick was "A Dream Makeover." .. 🤔The Best Transitional🦋Yet Timeless Designers Option !! 💯% LOVE ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ ... Wonderfully Marvelous 😘🥰"May I Move In" !!!
Wow! Monica, I was not on board with the backsplash tile, but it was great! And the floor! Wow! I watch a lot of make-over shows and this is by far one of the best make-overs I have seen. I am hooked on finding more of your videos. I guess I won't be getting anything done in real life now (because I'll be bingeing your shows. Hope to see much more of your work!
Truly LOVE that floor! And what a great solution for that crazy dangerous opening adjacent to the stairs! Monica both made it safe AND stylish! Genius!
Loved the stair restraint so much that I had my contractor work it into a studio remodel only difference was the stairs go up. Really want to send you a pic. It came out so beautiful
I watched Season 4 all over again - must be 3rd or 4th time. This kitchen and the "See Through Kitchen" you did in Ep. 5 are hands down two of my all-time favorite make-overs that you've done. I just LOVE these kitchens. I've been watching your series yet again to get fired up to do a couple of rooms over myself - a guest bedroom and a small bathroom are going glam.
At first glance, all I really wanna do in that kitchen was lie back on the floor and take selfies with the floor as the background.. hahaa... That floor's totally beautiful. Super creative 👍
I always keep coming back to this video. This is my favourite episode by far. The kitchen turned out so beautiful (even though I hated the idea for the floor, it looks sooo cool). And the homeowner is really sweet! I need more episodes!!!!!!!
OMG! Would you really believe that I got teary eyes when i saw the transformation?! so beautiful! Monica, you made the process look so easy and handy when i know it was so difficult to imagine and impliment. Bravo!
Abigail Bargdill I agree, if she can fir a table for 4 people.. it’s not a tiny kitchen. I have no pantry, no double sink, and it’s moving sideways for 2 people to be in my kitchen at the same time.. this is a tiny kitchen. ... I absolutely agree with you.
our old house was built in 1969 and the kitchen counter was blue also, but we did not have the $$ to have it remodeled. took us 10 yrs to find the courage to re-do our kitchen ourselves! I love Monica's weekender projects!
It's a stop what I'm doing and watch whole thing holiday when you post! I was worried during demo for your bare heads?! Such a cute homeowner! She's charming. Gorgeous manicure, Monica. Here I go with the safety stuff. Please pony tail your long hair when using the grinder so it doesn't have a chance to get tangled in the spinning blade. And seemed like a lot of stone dust happening with no particle mask even though outside. OMG! That floor is so perfect and gorgeous! That slat wall was pure genius. The final reveal was 100% satisfying. The room became deluxe yet still fit her whole house and personal style. Hooray! Ps her mum made me teary too.
I was worried when I saw the paint colors for the floors, I almost skipped till the end to see how they would turn out!! 😬😬😬but like always you do an amazing job 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I loved the "wall" created next to the stairs, and felt it complemented the open stair structure to the upstairs. A light fixture behind there on the brick wall might add illumination and eye appeal. The floor design wasn't my cup of tea, but I loved how you ripped up the luan and existing tiles and used a hardwood option. It would have been great to gain a bit more space for the fridge or range, but you were working with an existing chimney structure that couldn't be changed easily. Ditto for the floor. For a one-weekend time frame, and a limited budget, you solved a number of problems, increased efficiency, and added functionality to the space. Well done.
Awesome kitchen reno! So beautiful! I wish you had switched out the old nasty outlets! It only takes like 5 minutes. P.S. I love the makeovers. ... BUT I also watch for Monica's outfits. I LOVE her style! No joke... I shop for the outfits for this fall after each episode.
Love how Monica does so much work with wood, whether building something or painting/staining. She inspires me to do less crafting and more woodworking! Amazing transformation! Love it!
Oh my, girls, long hair hanging into your face and using power tools at the same time?? Use some elastic to keep your hair o the back of your neck. Nope it don't look pretty, but an accident ain't funny either.
AGREED!! I learned my lesson very quickly, had my hair clipped up outside using the big leaf blower, had on a hoodie and leaned over to turn it on and the string on the hoodie got sucked into the motor before I could freakin blink an eye and it pulled the whole blower up to my face! I hit the switch and got the string out which was now twisted one and a half million times into a tiny ringlet! can not imagine if that would have been hair, and ALSO wear better shoes, even some old work boots when doing that stuff, and no jewelry, I know these are cutesie little weekend make overs but you cant believe how quickly things happen.
Yes terrible accident. It's called scalping. If your on Lowe's Home Improvement channel at least pretend to be safety cautious in all areas because we're newbies and we follow things to the letter until we're confident.
OMGGGGGGGG MONICA & JASON!!!! That makeover was absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!! So talented Monica to pull your creative ideas into that small space!!!!!! That came out soooooo beautiful!!!!! Great job!!!!!!!!
The kitchen looks so much better than before! I love the stair solution...but,...as a designer myself, I see a few more things that Monica could have further done: #1. Enlarge the window over the sink by extending it down another 6 inches. Larger windows give more view to the outside, making the space feel larger, and giving more air and light to the interior. #2. Why use such a deep 3' refrigerator when 2' deep models are available? Use a 2' deep counter-depth refrigerator and you will gain a foot of space in the eating area, and overall better space-flow through a tight passageway. #3. Why use a stove range which also juts out? Instead, use a built-in cooktop over a built-in wall oven which will save about 3" of precious depth and give a sleeker overall design. #4. It would be better to place the pantry unit between the stove and the refrigerator (rather than at the end), so that the stove isn't heating the refrigerator by being so close to it. This will help to save energy and reduce the electric bill to cool the refrigerator. #5. The space to the right of the compact dishwasher is under-utilized. Yes, there is a heating vent in the floor, but built-in open storage can be custom-built over it. There would still be airflow and more storage would be gained. I hope this helps everyone with similar tight spaces. :)
I would have also recessed the 4" boards in the stairwell to fit under the stair to save 4 precious inches. It would have been a bit harder to install but now there is the top ends of the 2x4's to gather dust and take up space. Overall though a lovely reno.
you are so right about the window, but since its a 2-3 day project it would have taken too much time to do as well. and yes pantry between the fridge and stove would have been ideal!
Well she only had 2 days for the reno so not enough time for the window extension. And maybe the home owner wanted that size of fridge and stove. And I don't think the pantry would work in between the stove and fridge symmetrically. Small kitchen. That would chop up the flow. See we all have opinions. I think you should have enough respect for a fellow designer to not belittle her work the way that you did. Especially when the job that she did turned out to be fantastic. I hope that you receive the same respect that you give.
I don't disrespect Monica at all and admire her creativity. It's just that I have much education and experience in design. Designers critiquing each other is actually very common and accepted. The best designs are often made through collaboration, thinking through all the details.
@@cathyhendrix7552 So opinions are NOT welcome??? Possible to make a good design great with a bit more time to reflect/focus on the small things like enlarging the space. Hey better ideas for the next project! I appreciated the suggestions for my own home...
I can't believe how amazing this kitchen looks! I wish I could access that level of creativity! That was such a challenge and you completely transformed it.
Woke American: checks Google "Glaswegians" Google: Are glaswegians friendly? 1) Glaswegians are friendly - like crazy. They may just be the friendliest bunch of people you will ever come across.
Rabbit TeaPot not all Americans. If you live in a city your Kitchen may just be a counter. And I have been to several other countries. If you live outside the city center your Kitchen is bigger than this one. Plus, we all have HGTV so we know your countries are Beautiful. I would love to have your Old World style here.

this homeowner is so sweet! she seems so happy to have her house renovated:)
Jordan Drexler omg yes, and I thought she was an elf...
if that's what elves act like, then I wanna be friends with all the elves! she's so thankful and sweet
Jordan Drexler she also seemed a bit anxious but she wanted to be optimistic so badly
She really was so nice & so happy:) thanks for watching Jordan!
Jordan Drexler more like ungrateful and clueless. She's probably one of those people that would call 911 if someone yelled at her for pissing them off
Oh my goodness.. Seeing the cute little homeowner's reaction is so heart warming!! Best wishes for many years of happiness in that house!!

This homeowner has a sweet personality ❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾. The renovation was awesome, I love the stairwell
I actually thought the 'before' kitchen wasn't bad at all, but still think the result is really beautiful!
I think the problem with the original kitchen (other than that the owner didn't like the look) was it just looked old like it was falling apart. maybe when first built it was very nice for it's day
Jordan Drexler It also wasn’t laid out the most efficiently. Cooking in a small kitchen that isn’t planned out well can get tricky.
The Deco Cottage definitely true. There’s much more flow now
Yeah, I wish MY kitchen looked half as "bad" as the before. Sheesh.
She should be grateful for the blessing of being a homeowner and having a roof over her head. The kitchen was not bad looking.
What a transformation, it’s lovely. But I have to confess, I would be totally happy with your grandma kitchen, I thought it was sweet. 🌸
Monica is the full package: she is funny, smart, creative, beautiful, talented... basically just amazing. There can’t be too many seasons of the weekender. I can’t wait to see the new ones 😃
the homeowner is the cutest! she smiles the entire time. love the result!
I love the backsplash!
I love Monica. Talented, resourceful, and an incredibly down to earth personality. Just a quality woman all around. 😌

Matthew Olsen Mine too. I'm doing mine up soon, but I'm certainly not embarrassed by it, it's just an old, crappy kitchen and I want to make it more functional and easier to keep clean. When she said that, I just thought "You're far too easily embarrassed, m'dear".

Agatha jay I'd be happy with either kitchen too. Well, minus the death drop in the first one, but other than that, yep, me too!
Love that floor! Who would have thunk it?! ♥️ Can you come renovate my kitchen? L.o.l.
Thought the “before” kitchen was cute and whimsical, but I absolutely love the transformation! This is one of the first times I’ve seen a type of style that I feel like suits my own personality and what I want for my own home down the road.
When she said “i cant stop smiling”

The final reveal was 100% satisfying. The room became deluxe yet still fit her whole house and personal style. Hooray! Ps her mum made me teary too.
I'm thinking the same thing. I couldn't keep thinking about her hair! So dangerous.
I adore the designer woman I love her style, her style ,her enthusiasm, her energy my idea woman. She's gorgeous 🥰
I'd love to know how much was spend doing this project (as well as others). Especially since they are all DIY
Additional counter space, cabinets & the Lazy Susan!! The appliances, sink, slatted wall. & floating shelves. Monica you're working magic.😉
Great job with the wood and seeing the brick thru the wood boards , I am a female DYI ER .. SHE WAS SO HAPPY !
I was worried when I saw the paint colors for the floors, I almost skipped till the end to see how they would turn out!! 😬😬😬but like always you do an amazing job 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Loveeee!!! Your spaces just keep getting better and better
i wasn’t sure when i saw the floor project was being done .. but i was wrong.. it’s looks fantastic
This video has been on my suggestions for A YEAR now and i dont know why this is the first time i click it. Not disappointed.
I'm a fan of this woman now. She's so cool and knowledgeable!
Well done.
I love this series.
Monica is a visionary! I learned a lot. The kitchen is good looking.
Love how Monica does so much work with wood, whether building something or painting/staining. She inspires me to do less crafting and more woodworking! Amazing transformation! Love it!
I’m a grandma. My kitchen is quite nice, not old or outdated. I have friends whose kitchens also are up to date and high end. Also grandmas
Grandmas ROCK!
Wowww
Grandmas know best!
I thought that the first video i saw of her...
Also, wear a mask when cutting that tile so you don't breath in the dust causing silicosis.
Also her long jacket sleeves are dangerous!
Amazing! I loved their reactions to the reveal, so grateful!
GEORGEOUS!!!!! Her mom's response was priceless. :-)
I love the stair solution...but,...as a designer myself, I see a few more things that Monica could have further done:
Is it just me or does the house owner sound like Bernadette from Big Bang Theory?
Or someone who took a big inhale of helium
She does haha
So how do I get you to cm see my kitchen? Wld love some help
Ur absolutely correct she is actually pretending Bernadette..
"My tiny kitchen" honey my kitchen is a hallway lol
Mine is a closet lol
Tell me about it
In my opinion, there are a lot of patterns in such a small space.
I love almost all of your projects.
I can't believe how amazing this kitchen looks! I wish I could access that level of creativity! That was such a challenge and you completely transformed it.
💛 So happy🤗 for the young lady🤗 she seems so kind Hearted 🤗
Making mother and daughter happy together, Monica has the greatest job.
Awwwhhhh...cute house, cute owner....amazing new kitchen! I love it!
Every little detail is perfect 👍
Thanks so much Rara!

Americans - *This is a tiny kitchen*
Glaswegians- *Hold my beer*
Woke American: checks Google "Glaswegians"
Google: Are glaswegians friendly?
1) Glaswegians are friendly - like crazy.
They may just be the friendliest bunch of people you will ever come across.
Rabbit TeaPot not all Americans. If you live in a city your Kitchen may just be a counter. And I have been to several other countries. If you live outside the city center your Kitchen is bigger than this one. Plus, we all have HGTV so we know your countries are Beautiful. I would love to have your Old World style here.
To be clear, I don't think most Americans would call this kitchen "tiny". Small? Maybe but it looks like the perfect size for one person.
Enter the Galley kitchen 😄
A beautiful renovation. I love the wooden floor and the black sink, butcher block shelves.
Love love love the floor, especially the creativity of different colors & keeping that rustic modern look at the same time.
