For all of you talking about the cabinets lost....Mónica literally said " I won't do this with every owner" she said that she talked to her about it and she was OK with it. Not everyone needs all that storage...what we need is stop hoarding stuff. With open shelving you are forced to do that as well as keep your things tidy and clean. Any space will breathe more with less stuff. I think the idea of getting all of those cabinets down is awesome and the end result is just Fantastic!!! Can't wait for next week's episode!
It's not even about hording stuff. It's about all your dishes getting covered with either dust or grease. It's really a design for people who don't cook or use their kitchens. Which maybe this client is. But shaming people about 'hording" when they really just don't want dirty dishes to eat off is not a great take.
I have pets and I need cabinets to keep my clean dishes clean. Id rather see a cabinet than my things in piles on a shelf. If there was a large pantry to replace the cabinets, I'd love the openness. I can see this working for someone single, but it's not family practical in my mind. It did turn out nice though
Hi Friends! I knew this ep would have you debating for sure -lol! Some thoughts on taking down the cabs and the infamous microwave. 1 The golden rule for ANY design is what the homeowner wants and how they plan use the space. This homeowner wanted open shelving. Her upper cabinets were mainly empty on a daily basis and she wanted to keep her essentials only in the kitchen. What you didn't see (bc we only have so much time in an ep) is that she has a massive dining room with tons of closed, built-in shelving where all of her serve ware and things are stored. 2- The microwave moved to the pantry outside of the kitchen - some people do want to prioritize design over convenience (Dallas was willing to take a few extra steps to get to the micro and didn't want to see it). 3- I love that you guys watch our makeovers and share your opinions - designing for a different homeowner with different style goals each weekend is a fun challenge AND it shows just how versatile Lowe's products are that we can design completely different looks!! See you next weekend!! -Monica
Thank you for the explanation. The kitchen is gorgeous!!!! We could not take down our cabinets because the need for storage, and I also feel like they are part of the slight wow factor of our own kitchen, but I just loooooove this! Well done. All of it!
I'm not sure who decides the length the episodes need to be, but I think adding 30sec to address that the dining room has storage is important. It helps viewers be more realistic about their own design choices.
When I first saw the kitchen, I was like "it looks so nice, why would you need to change it??" And then, I have to admit, I was a little unsure it would turn out. Then at the reveal i was flipping blown away, it looks so, so cool. It's a perfect mix of styles, that all meld together, I was shocked I liked it so much since I don't usually like traditional. My only disappointment is that those adorable tiles with the bunny are demoed.
I love how it looks, but I'd never want to lose that cabinet space. Open shelves are pretty but not so practical. It is beautiful though. I have one open shelf and I am Definitely adding a towel bar to it, purchasing bar today :)
I definitely would've NEVER taken those cabinets down. To sacrifice so much precious storage for looks just does not do it for me. However, knowing that it was the owner's decision makes me feel better. The kitchen came out beautiful and it has a high end look. Tiles and color complement the style enormously. Great job and design.
I love that you listened to what she wanted. There are some people that just don't want all the storage space and that's ok. It's her home. Listening to what the client wants is the most important thing.
I love your design ideas for lightening up the kitchen for your client, Monica, and giving her a new stove!!!, so awesome!!!, however, I, too, am concerned about storage for her. I don’t know if she had a lot of stuff in her upper cabinets. If she did, maybe giving her back some storage by putting in a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, with glass inset doors (to keep things feeling light), in the unused space where the nice gold hooks are, would be a good idea.
This kitchen is so gorgeous!! Opening it up and letting the walls and windows breathe was the perfect solution. And those gallery rails... **chef kiss**
Absolutely gorgeous renovation. You added so much light, space, and style. I am ever amazed at your work around solutions for things like the gallery rail and range hood. Beautifully done! I would’ve liked to have heard about and seen what she stored in her cabinets. I love the openness of shelving in a kitchen but also fear it as I do not have a separate pantry or storage space for extra dishes, food, appliances. Did this homeowner purge things, store them elsewhere, or work them in? I feel that information would be helpful.
I have done lots of painting, but I haven't liked the texture /application of the cabinet paint. If I don't have Varathane paint, I'd go with a super quality high gloss trim paint instead. I would pick a table and chairs over an island every time! Love the art. The rails and the backsplash were great clever choices. Well done! Now she just needs a weekend to tackle her front door and porch to elevate her curb appeal :)
Beautiful design. I am a big fan of open shelving in kitchens. It opens up the space so much and adds interest. This redesign really played to the age of the home
I love, love the finished kitchen! Super stylish and very creative use of products! I am always excited to see different designs, and it is wonderful that you listened to the homeowner’s needs and wants to build her ideal kitchen…it is beautiful!
It looks stunning!! I appreciate that she said "I won't do this with every owner" because most people want the extra cabinetry. But if it fits with her lifestyle, damn it looks fabulous in the end!
I love this style of kichen. The lights on the walls was very different. Open shelves are my favorite. It like a Traditional farmhouse. Everything in the makeover came out beautifully. Great job Monica
This turned out beautiful. I love open shelves. And the tile back splash looks great! And didn't think a table would fit but actually makes the kitchen look bigger!
I love it BUT it seems she lost a LOT of storage space. Where will she put everything she had in the cabinets and under her island, and what about a microwave? I wish some of that was talked about since many people wanting to redo kitchens have these same questions.
I do wish to hear about the microwave decision. I use mine constantly so no way I would do without it, but I know others that might only use theirs a few times a year so just getting rid of it wouldn't be a big deal.
I love your design ideas for lightening up the kitchen for your client, Monica, and giving her a new stove!, however, I, too, am concerned about storage for her. I don’t know if she had a lot of stuff in her upper cabinets. If she did, maybe giving her back some storage by putting in a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, with glass inset door fronts, in the unused space where the nice gold hooks are, would be a good idea?
Shelves instead of upper cabinets are trendy but impractical. But it's not my kitchen. If the homeowner likes it, that's great. Also, nobody's taking my microwave away!
Um the microwave is probably hidden in a cabinet. The over the counter microwaves are dated and cheap looking. Regarding the cabinets removed, Monica said a million times she wouldn’t do this for every client but the client was wanting this. To me it means the client does have much stuff
Love the towel bar hack! Love the new oven and table..,not in love with only shelving on the top (I would have preferred shelving just on the smaller wall. I’m always thinking it’s more stuff to dust! But you did a great job on the door!
Awesome weekend project and awesome results. I love not crowding things into a home just because. Many of us don't need all those cabinets. It entices one to fill them up with stuff. I am getting ready to remove my upper cabinets for a simpler style. This project has got me thinking. Thank you, Monica!
"It`s looking fantastic" says the lady who quite recently got rid of all open shelving and did swap it for huge closed dark cabinets🤩 I have no regrets though....each to their own
Monica this is the video I have always wanted!!!. Thank you so much!!! Definitely borrowing that gallery rail idea. YAASSS the puck lights I used for my daughter's room.
People tend to keep EVERYTHING in their kitchens. I wonder, truly, how much is really beautuful and useful. Day-to-day dishware, holiday set, dressy set / often a wedding registry set. Pots + pans, bakeware, prep equipment, foils, wraps, papers, staples. Pantry is often a separate area. Coffee bar; baking center. See, Martha Stewart showed, years ago, how restaurants use open shelves. Monica doesn't do this with every client; but, this gal was begging to "lighten up".
I love it! It's amazing how breaking a large task into many smaller projects, and then doing simple changes can completely transform a space. The shower towel rail is such a creative idea too!
MONICA! You get me every time. Every single time I think "Oh, no, I don't like that..." about something, and then at the end it looks amazing. I was skeptical about the hood surround and the sconces. But in the end they both looked great. I am definitely a cabinet person, not an open shelving person. But hese shelves turned out fancy! The styling is so elegant. I also was not on board when gold tone metals started coming back into style. I kept thinking late 1980s / early 1990s. But they have grown on me and I like the color palette you chose for this room. The gold metals, the marble look tile, the blue door, and even the paintings and wood accents in the styling all really make the space look calm and sophisticated. I like that you gave a nod to the house's history. It can be really hard to do that in kitchens and bathrooms since things are so different now. I don't think I've seen a painting like that one by the fridge in a kitchen before, and that is one of my favorite things about the styling. Bravo! I just love this series. :)
My partner of 12 years and I retired to our vacation area. The home is very eclectic artist built open plan lodge urban ranch Euro? No upper cabinets! Sliding drawers in all lower though. I panicked at first where to put things. I had been downsized by 3 job losses over last 20 years but he had 35 years in same house. Even baby toys still stored. We cut everything down to needs. He had like 40 coffee cups double stacked. You get used to less fast!
It looks so beautiful...and I might use the giant tile hack for my future backsplash! My favorite parts are the use of the bathroom towel bars and the custom hood. Also, love the blue color of the door!
It definitely looks more wonderful and filled with light now. I'm envious about the more open space you gave her. I'm glad you gave her a table where friends could come for dinner. The only problem would be the tall vase and plant you put on the table. You wouldn't be able to see anyone on the other side of the table from you, so you'd have to switch it out.
This kitchen is stunning. It looks like a designer kitchen. I am much more Rustic Farmhouse but I would love to do the backsplash. I still have laminate counter tops from the 90's when we built our home. I am now disabled and do not entertain like I use to .... so maybe I could do with less cabinets but I think it would be more work keeping it cleaned weekly. I love the towel bar idea. We used iron pipes for curtain rods in our living room on a pallet wall, at Christmas time my tension rod curtain bar over my kitchen sink kept falling down when I hung my garland on it (I have done this for YEARS) so not wanting to deal with it all holiday season We went to hardware store and bought 2 iron hooks and b/c prices have gone up we just bought a 1" dowel rod and spray painted in Rustoleum antique spray paint to give it the look of iron. No one realized it is a wood dowel! I wondered if you wanted one long rod instead of 2 towel bars could you have painted a longer dowel or pipe with the ends from the towel bar? I'm not familiar with that look so maybe there are breaks in the bars normally. Just a thought. There were so many ideas Monica that you just blow my mind. I would love for you to come to my house! My hubby and I just paid off our 30 year mortgage. wOO HOO~!!! But now that I am disabled I just can't help my husband and he is working 2 jobs, and turning 60 in August. He is a role model for in sickness and in health! I just love your channel! I'm making wish lists. Have a blessed day.
I loved the range hood and overall I liked the look, but not having all the upper cabinets causes me anxiety. Having the dishes on the counter? Of course she has a lot of lower cabinets. Love the towel bracket shelves!
Bright charming and sophisticated! Luv it! Single folks don't need all the cabinets as we do not have half the shit as a whole family. Luv the tiles as a backsplash. Going to be borrowing that idea in my new place. Thanks Monica!!!
I just bought a home built in 1900. The old bones are there, but the “flip” brought in those white cabinets in the kitchen…open floor concept now. Trying to figure out how to personalize it. Love the shelves in the kitchen, love open. Great ideas. Thank you,
“I can get a cat!”😂… But seriously, love your design ideas. People so often keep the design decisions of the builder. And they can be but most of the time they are not creative. I love the way Monica always explains her creative decisions. ❤ Love your work/style and the show!❤
It looks gorgeous, but I would have built an L shaped small banquet seating area with storage in the seating and a table where Monica put the coat hooks and kept the island :-)
While it looks pretty, I don't think it's practical. Where did she put all her appliances etc. after removing her packed cupboards. Like the rails but I would have changed the rods so it would fit the whole length.
It's so beautiful!!! So classic and bright though warm. Love it! And as a German I always wonder why you Americans need soooo much storage in your kitchens, so I would have taken down down those cabinets as well!
While I love the overall style of the kitchen, the removal of the upper cabinets created a storage issue. The area where you placed hooks, could have been better used for a pantry to compensate for the loss of upper cabinet storage.
Greetings, Monica. This kitchen was modernized for sure. But, my concern is that the open shelving eliminates so much storage space. What happened to the contents of all the cabinet shelving that was removed? But, I do agree the elimination of the cabinets and inclusion of minimal open shelves does OPEN the kitchen.
OMG MONICA!! I am in LOVE with this Kitchen!!!!!!! I have so many ideas now for mine, I have not been able to find a backsplash for my kitchen, I'm too picky I guess, and this ideas is GENIUS!!! The SCONCES, the VENT HOOD, the EVERYTHING!!!! SO ELEGANT AND CLASSY!!! You did it Girl!!! that's why you're my FAVE!!!🤩✨✨✨
Beautiful kitchen, more showroom than practical at first glance but I like the openness with the upper cabinets gone. I hope the homeowner has a pantry because she lost all her storage space. I like the open shelves and the idea for railings. The main thing I'd have done is take that small area where Monica put the unnecessary hooks and make it a shallow pantry with doors matching the vent cover. Over all, I like the space. My favorite were the sconces. Clever idea of using remote activated lighting. Monica took the kitchen back in time but in a modern way.
Great idea- I could never lose that much storage, so adding some on that wall may have been an answer; also a place for microwave- which I can’t live w/o 👍🌴
So I think this is my second or third time to look at this video and I really love this kitchen. I don’t have a grand of older home as she does because mines in the process of being upgraded for the first time. Lol but a lot of great ideas that I could incorporate so I’m saving this video this time and Monica where are you?
We love to hear you have a favorite The Weekender episode. This kitchen is gorgeous!! Be sure to subscribe to the channel for 2023 updates on new episodes
You did a BEAUTIFUL job with all of your decisions on this one, Monica!!! You had a gorgeous client w a gorgeous house. But, you did her well!
I refuse to stop hoarding stuff! :)
@@katietatey hehe... we are all guilty of it ! 😉
It's not even about hording stuff. It's about all your dishes getting covered with either dust or grease.
It's really a design for people who don't cook or use their kitchens. Which maybe this client is.
But shaming people about 'hording" when they really just don't want dirty dishes to eat off is not a great take.
Open shelving inspires people to get clutter so they can fill it with knickknacks.
I have pets and I need cabinets to keep my clean dishes clean. Id rather see a cabinet than my things in piles on a shelf. If there was a large pantry to replace the cabinets, I'd love the openness. Monica, ALL your designs are amazing!🎉🎉🎉🎉
I had the exact same questions, thank you for answering them :) beautiful design!
She had so much stuff on her countertops beforehand I couldn't imagine where she was going with all of it when you took down cabinets.
I'm not sure who decides the length the episodes need to be, but I think adding 30sec to address that the dining room has storage is important. It helps viewers be more realistic about their own design choices.

I saw the bunny tile and thought immediately that they needed ti save that tile & use it for a little DIY accent piece somehow.
I am so glad Monica is back. She is amazing!
My mum and I are so glad to see Monica on the weekender again !!!❤😊😊😊😊
I love how it looks, but I'd never want to lose that cabinet space. Open shelves are pretty but not so practical. It is beautiful though. I have one open shelf and I am Definitely adding a towel bar to it, purchasing bar today :)
Hope you’ll update here if this project worked well for you!!🌴
I have open shelving and love it. I find them very practical.
agree! I NEED all my cabinet space!
The towel bar hack is a gem!
It looks really great! I don't think I could live with so few cabinets, but it certainly works for the home.
I love that you listened to what she wanted. There are some people that just don't want all the storage space and that's ok. It's her home. Listening to what the client wants is the most important thing.

Beautiful design. I am a big fan of open shelving in kitchens. It opens up the space so much and adds interest. This redesign really played to the age of the home
I live this at first when I said bead board up against the marbled tile I wasn't sure. But u proved me wrong it looks beautiful.
I love, love the finished kitchen! Super stylish and very creative use of products! I am always excited to see different designs, and it is wonderful that you listened to the homeowner’s needs and wants to build her ideal kitchen…it is beautiful!
Hey there Monica, another hit on style. Love how this kitchen turned out. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️🥰❤️ Huge Fan of Your Work, Chris
Love it, Buuuut where did all the things in the cupboards go? You didn't mention her having a butler's pantry or any other place for them.
It's great! She took the original island out though and replaced it with the table.
Fabulous outcome. So much brighter and roomier.
I love weekender ever since so I really love that Monica is back for Weekender. Yayyy!!
Two words, blown away. Monica you never fail to amaze ❤
Love the kitchen makeover! Will try the towel bar idea--excellent.
Omg! You hit it out of the park!!!!! Well Done!
Just like she said, it's so crazy! wonderful transformation. Less cabinet make it looks nice.
Just beautiful!! The space looks brighter and bigger.
When I buy my home I am going to pull soooo much from this video....as always great job Monica. Dallas you're so lucky 😍
Wow! So great. Very impressive just for a weekend
Wow - it’s beautiful! I love it. The bead board and the hood vent are probably my favorites.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing too, that I would have put the open shelving on the smaller wall.
Speaking of dusting: my mom-in-law always called ‘stuff’ , ‘dust collectors’ Lol 😵💫
BEAUTIFUL JOB, Monica. Dallas has taste + discernment. You filled the brief!
Awesome weekend project and awesome results. I love not crowding things into a home just because. Many of us don't need all those cabinets. It entices one to fill them up with stuff. I am getting ready to remove my upper cabinets for a simpler style. This project has got me thinking. Thank you, Monica!
Loved this makeover. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍. Realise lots of people asked about storage. Probably an incentive to weed out stuff!
Having moved to a smaller home last year I def have already halved my stuff, but perhaps this was a good reminder for me to edit some more lol
Very nice. Looks great. I couldn’t live without upper cabinets . Open shelves would always be dirty in my house, but they look great here
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts, Linda! 💙
The kitchen is just beautiful I love how it turned out
"It`s looking fantastic" says the lady who quite recently got rid of all open shelving and did swap it for huge closed dark cabinets🤩

Love the towel bars on the shelves 😍 Great idea 👏🏻 TY @monicamangin 🥰
Ps: Still think this series should be weekly 😁
People tend to keep EVERYTHING in their kitchens. I wonder, truly, how much is really beautuful and useful.
Day-to-day dishware, holiday set, dressy set / often a wedding registry set.

Monica doesn't do this with every client; but, this gal was begging to "lighten up".
I love love love your creative thoughts Monica. You are the best.
Those towel rails... Excuse me: Gallery rails... Are a GAME CHANGER! I definitely want to incorporate this into my kitchen somehow
I love it! It's amazing how breaking a large task into many smaller projects, and then doing simple changes can completely transform a space. The shower towel rail is such a creative idea too!
Absolutely beautiful! The door color was amazing. I thought it was going to be lighter in color, but was pleasantly surprised the richness of color.
Un-Eff'ing believable ! Just gorgeous. Love it !
I love this make over. I think it's my favorite of all your kitchen redos!
The range hood turned out amazing!! So cute! So original!!
The idea of using towel bars on the shelf was great. The kitchen is very pretty.
It looks beautiful!!! Eventhough some cabinets is always useful to have for storages, I love the finish work.
MONICA! You get me every time. Every single time I think "Oh, no, I don't like that..." about something, and then at the end it looks amazing. I was skeptical about the hood surround and the sconces. This is me all day. I love it!
Monica knocked it out if the park AGAIN!! ✌🏼
Open Shelving #ftw 🙌🏼
Monica, you always amaze me! WOW! So many fantastic ideas.
Love love love the enclosed range hood and the fluted molding! Such a gorgeous statement piece in the kitchen! As always, awesome job Monica!! 👏🏽

This makeover is my favorite of all episodes, it was more than amazing.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😍😍
Brilliant design solution in just a weekend Monica! It seems like just what the homeowner wanted. Thanks for the explanation in the comments too.
Beautiful! That ceramic tile backsplash is amazing!
As always you did a great job. So glad you're back. I am learning stuff. 😆
It definitely looks more wonderful and filled with light now. I'm envious about the more open space you gave her. I'm glad you gave her a table where friends could come for dinner.
Love the home owner and designers energy together!
Love Monica's style. Even her clothing style I want!
Brilliant lighting hack! I absolutely love that! So glad the weekender is back ❤
Love it! Definitely will use couple of ideas such lightning to add to my remodeled kitchen. Great job 👏
Absolutely LOVE the towel bar idea!
Simply beautiful!
The lights were the best👏👏👏👏
Bright charming and sophisticated! Luv it! Single folks don't need all the cabinets as we do not have half the shit as a whole family. Luv the tiles as a backsplash. Going to be borrowing that idea in my new place. Thanks Monica!!!
I just bought a home built in 1900. The old bones are there, but the “flip” brought in those white cabinets in the kitchen…open floor concept now. Trying to figure out how to personalize it. Love the shelves in the kitchen, love open. Great ideas. Thank you,
Love, love, love the towel bar shelf’s I’m going to copy this😍
Love it but maybe there was room for a tall old fashioned pantry to replace the top cupboards?
Gorgeous makeover
Wow, it looks stunning and luxurious! I also love all the hacks!! Great work, guys! 😊👍🏻
this kitchen is bad ass!!!! everything blind together so well awesome job.
Great job! But, no microwave at all?
Love this. It’s amazing
“I can get a cat!”😂… But seriously, love your design ideas. People so often keep the design decisions of the builder. And they can be but most of the time they are not creative.
I love the way Monica always explains her creative decisions. ❤ Love your work/style and the show!❤
Thank you!
The towel rack hack, genius!! I’m definitely implementing this in my kitchen!
It looks gorgeous, but I would have built an L shaped small banquet seating area with storage in the seating and a table where Monica put the coat hooks and kept the island :-)
Stunning!! The large tile backsplash is genius!!
It’s such a smart idea but the fact that they didn’t try to match the veining is killing me lol
While it looks pretty, I don't think it's practical. Where did she put all her appliances etc. after removing her packed cupboards. Like the rails but I would have changed the rods so it would fit the whole length.
Omg I haven’t seen a weekender episode in ages!!
It's so beautiful!!! So classic and bright though warm. Love it! And as a German I always wonder why you Americans need soooo much storage in your kitchens, so I would have taken down down those cabinets as well!
This is my favorite thing you have ever designed. Amazing design Love it.
Brilliant! Just brilliant!
While I love the overall style of the kitchen, the removal of the upper cabinets created a storage issue. The area where you placed hooks, could have been better used for a pantry to compensate for the loss of upper cabinet storage.
This is the most beautiful small kitchen I ever seen!! 💕🤩
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!! I just found this channel. I can't wait to see what else is here :)
So I think this is my second or third time to look at this video and I really love this kitchen. I don’t have a grand of older home as she does because mines in the process of being upgraded for the first time. Lol but a lot of great ideas that I could incorporate so I’m saving this video this time and Monica where are you?
