September 26th, 1991. Nevermind was only 2 days old, and it hadn't exploded yet. This is unreal....I don't think anybody in the crowd had any idea Nirvana was about to be one of the biggest bands in the world in only a few months. They are still playing like a grunge band from soggy Aberdeen Washington, in a dive bar somewhere hidden in an alleyway. Really unique time, makes this footage very meaningful. It's the end days of life as these 3 guys knew it
Watching this, realizing it is just before Nevermind explosion, you can see the band hitting on all cylinders. Kurt is really into his performance as well. He even realizes the band is onto something and the crowd energy is electric. This is a rare glimpse pre-fame at Nirvana at their peak.
The next night on the 27th they would play City Gardens in Trenton NJ which WAS a legendary punk venue. My parents would drive me there for shows and they had no idea what type of place it was lol. Missed Nirvana that night because I didn’t know who they were. Two nights later Kurt and Dave watched themselves on MTV for the first time from a Pittsburgh hotel room when 120 minutes played Smell Like Teen Spirit for the first time.
funny, people out here in washington act like they own this band. esp. seattlites. they were from aberdeen, the armpit of the pacific NW and seattle "scoffed" at them when they first attempted seattle. this show was on the other side of the nation in fucking new haven CT (pizza mecca of the usa), b4 nevermind dropped. kris novaselich, even tho he says like he doesnt remember it now, was quoted as saying this was among if not his fav. all time show. we were there en masse. kurt put 25 of us on the g list, prompting the rightfully pissed promoter to "ban" them from any further shows there. not that it mattered. they were playing huge venues next month instead of seedy old ex-stripper bars. good times. kurt wasnt on dope at this show. all we could get for him was cough syrup.
I love how no one freaks out when Kurt kicks into SLTS, lol. 4 months later and you wouldn't even hear the drums kick in, over the crowd, once he started playing that riff.

A little behind the scenes info. During the day of this show, Nirvana rolled up to FMC Associates in Watertown, CT at 12:00 pm. They had a dead Ampeg SVT bass head, brought to US to fix. We had to overnight parts etc to fix it. Meantime the band was hanging out in our shop till we could locate from the music Stores we did repairs for a bass Amp for them to rent for the Moon show. We located a new Ampeg SVT from Brian Guitars on Amity rd in New Haven however he wouldn't rent to them! (afraid never see it again). So we rented in our shops name and paid Brian's telling the band we would add it to there bill. Curt was so positive about things then. He was telling us they where going to be really big. He gave us an original copy of SLTS with the original cover. Dave was just mellow, mostly practicing on a pillow in our lounge. Don't remember much about Chris that day. My Partner Rich followed the bus down to New Haven to get the amp head from Brian's. Then went to the Moon. U had to stay to close the shop do I never went. Next day we finished the repair on Chris's Amo head and the once again came back to FMC to get it. The bill with all the charges was around $300 . Kurt happily Wrote us a check from their tour support account. We said goodbye and the band was off. I guess Brian's was right about renting to them. That check bounced, a further testament that tour lost money! Great to finally see the show I missed!
it is great in my opinion because he did it once and thats it , if he had done it throughout the show it would have been annoying and have put kurt off . just my opinion
this is one off the most important music videos i have ever watched. just before nevermind , tiny crowd, and the happiest Kurt ever was. he wanted to be like the melvins, black flag etc. and would have been happy to slowly build up a reputation over 20 years, instead we all know what happend and nevermind shattered him as he felt like a sellout. unfortunately what he didn't realize was he was such an artful composers and beautiful at phrasing his songs that he was never going to be a long term underground band, the music spoke to us all in our teens at the time across the world !
he was so talented, he had the looks and the hooks, a perfect storm. He was a natural and surpassed them bands he loved but never saw himself as a talented creative person and felt like a fraud.
In case you are unaware... “Here She Comes Now” is a Velvet Underground song written by Lou Reed. Everyone may already know that, just giving a VU shout out. Peace.
This was shot under very difficult circumstances by the great larry geyselaers. Without his trusty camcorder a lot of Connecticut area shows would be lost to history.long live kurdt
@@MindsetMastery75 They never played the Tune Inn. I played there once. All ages show. Also I think Malcolm Tent filmed this and Fernando Pinto booked this gig.
Hmmmm... I always thought Malcolm Tent, owner of that record shop Trash American Style, shot this. Side note: after Googling Larry's name, I see he won 1.7 million bucks on a quick pick in 1985.
This reminds me of when I DIDN'T go see them right around the same time in Athens Ga at the 40 Watt. Have regretted it ever since. And to this day I don't even know WHY I didn't. I went to shows all the time. Arrrrrgh.
Kurt played the same in a room at Krist moms house facing the wall with 4 people there. Same intensity and level. It didn’t matter how many people listened. He was an real artist.
@@Georgeanne17 You could tell by 93 and 94 Kurt was burned out and most of the intensity was gone. His addiction and stomach ailments were getting the better of him.
@jason210ification true, after nevermind they had like 800 people trying to get into 200 capacity clubs and had to move to bigger veneus out of necessity.
I've got a teleport mat which I just throw on the floor and it takes me anywhere I want dude......haven't u got yours yet? Available from all top retailers....
People who don't know shit about actually playing drums like to say things like that. Moddest Mouse was good but lacks the finesse and crazy tightness Grohl has, he isn't boring it's simple and effective, less is more and playing exactly what the song requires, with fucking cool licks. He is one of the greatest rock drummers or all time. I see your video and raise you with thew entire of Them Crooked Vultures ;P
Most of his interviews, the heavier than heaven biograohy, pretty much knowing anything more than his name means you know that's true. He hated being famous and all its oressures , it's one of the reasons he killed himself
Yah I love those chords. ' really super simple chord progression, but no.one had(at least as far as im.aware) used it. Almost has a surf/spy feel to it...
I never saw Nirvana,my old band played with 'Scream' the band D.Grohl used to be in.. I've always had a bit of respect for Nirvana, but this gig,,,,,wow. Kurt killed it on the vocals. Wish I was at this gig,at this time period, etc,,,,
This is simply unbelievable… I’m 44, lived through this era, never saw that show before, i’m just blown away. Pure, raw energy, before the storm chew them up. What a performance😳🤯
One of those bands that simply had it all.Great songs, great image, great musicianship, a kick ass drummer, a vocalist that you could recognize after one note...Listen to that rasp in his voice. He's not even screaming. It was as if he could press a pedal and get the rasp on his voice at will as he did on his guitar distortion pedal.
12truk great image in the context of music industry is a distinctive image that helps sell the band by making them stand out. They also set fashion trends that are alive to this day. That's a great image for rock, not a well tailored suit.
+Fer Abra I get what you mean. Anyway the whole point in Nirvana is that paradoxically, their image is just that they actually gave a shit to their image. They would just wear poor broken clothes because they didn't spend any money in buying "rockstar" clothes.
12truk Exactly. Not giving a shit about their clothes and buying them in the thrift shop made them stand out. They made Michael Jackson seem outdated in his "rockstar" clothes overnight, and defined what a rockstar looked like in the 90s. Great image.
+Fer Abra Yep, exactly. But what I meant is that they didn't do that intentionally. They were just being themselves. Then the media tried to bring a fashion out of it and that's actually one of the things that Kurt, Krist and Dave hated the most. They weren't up there because of fashion, they were just making music and having fun.
I actually think this is JUST a little bit too small to be ideal for Nirvana. This is the right-size club for like a shitty but lovable punk band, where the playing isn't very good but you're there for just the chaotic energy. Nirvana on the other hand, possessed some of that energy, but could actually play, and had great songs, haha...just using the drums as an example, the combination of Dave being too cramped along with his drums not being mic'd properly means he can't really NAIL some of those awesome gorilla drum fills he does, and it takes away from their overall power a little bit. I'd say maybe double the size of this venue, still GA only (obviously) would be perfect for them.
@@Ohbubbano Haha, this is true, this is true...I have no doubt that had Cobain lived, they would've started doing 'secret' gigs under different names, or unannounced impulsive ones, at smaller venues. There is nothing like seeing a band equipped to play a huge venue in an environment intimate enough for a local band...I got to see Radiohead, for example, on a special tour they did to roadtest then-new material--it was nowhere near THIS small, but it was standing room only, and I got right in front of the stage...something special.
@@sethp1624 Of course... we all prefer him on the drums, but it was Nirvana. We all gotta grow and follow our path, it is just Dave's path is in public and appeals to lots and lots of people.
i feel like if u listen to one of these songs, if you're mind is open enough, you could slip into another dimension-like continuum and become enlightened with the noise kurts spirit resinates on your showered self.
Anyone think is strange they started the show with 3 covers? What a band. Kurt was a great front man. That voice! Dave was a ferocious drummer. Krist was a great bass player. Will a band this great ever come along again? One of these days..we need another Kurt. Badly.
+David Boguzes Absolutely agree David. Just as Kurt spoke back so many years ago "Parents and children like the same music these days and that's frightening to us" We need another Kurt/Grunge/Nirvana to explode and mix everything up just as it were to happen way back in 1990 cheers mate :)
we(me) are currently writing 7 songs at the moment so it will be a while haha, plus my drummer is going in the army soon so we will need a new drummer But one day yes to that haha
43:52 You can see Kurt grinning and then crack up at the guy screaming along to the song. Bittersweet cuz if it had stayed around this level of hype I feel things could've went differently for Kurt, I hate even thinking things like that but I can't help it watching these pre Nirvanamania gigs. Krist said something along the same lines too.
I was backstage at this concert. I was President of the US at the time and had just landed on Air Force 1, nearby. The toilet on the plane was blocked, so myself and 4 secret service guys commandeered the toilets in this venue. I bumped into Kurt backstage and we talked about music and I showed him some of my songs. I didn't directly give him permission to use them, but I guess I never exactly said he couldn't, so I was okay with what happened next. Anyways, they got the toilets fixed, and I went back to just being the plain old President. But I'm proud to have been involved in the events depicted in this video.
you know what - they are both RH-Negative ( so Look it up!) It means something . And just how mysterious & sudden their "deaths" (murders) were. Just research it.
he was actually laughing because he thought of a funny joke that he heard earlier today about turkey abortions. i was at the hospital when kurt was born, i would know......
I was at this show. Me, Byl and Johny had a bunch of vodka and Jägermeister and drank with Kurt right through the first 2 bands. He got about 20 of us on the pest list which is why Fernando banned them from the club thereafter. Bad move. I'm yelling "Donkey show" just prior to the Vasolines cover. I'm pretty sure acid was involved as well. After the fruit throwing at the beginning, everyone was just trying to stay on their feet from the fruit slime all over the floor but from the camera angle it looks like dancing. Great fucking show.
I would add that he played 'Spank thru' and every weird song we could think of asking him to play. He also did not play 'In Bloom' by specific request and even claimed that he didn't remember how to play it. LOL.
davefusa We were collecting their bootlegs before Nevermind came out. The Subpop catalog from 1989 listed the Bleach album with the comment, "they have they're own van and they are going to make us filthy rich." I'm sure they had NO fucking clue just how true that statement was.
I think one of great mythos with Nirvana is the idea that heir shows are these legendary gigs. I mean I watch this video like it's some legendary concert preserved 23 years later. A lot of fans consider this one of their better shows from 1991 and you can see why. The band sounds good and the setlist is pretty great. But the reality was, just like the shows my band does, it was in a small club probably on a week night and they were just another cool Rock band. Just another night. But little did they know. Little did anybody know that by 1992 - the world was there's for the taking.
The drums kicking in on School is my favorite part of any show where it's on the setlist. The way Kurt throws himself and the way the crowd just goes crazy is amazing
Nirvana were masters of the challenging setlist, which are a complete delight to the hardcore fan 30 years later.. Thanks to whoever filmed this, the internet and youtube, between the 3 of those things it means these tiny gigs can be enjoyed by 1 million+ people all around the world, instead of just the 500 or 1000 people who were there watching this live
I was there. The Moon held probably about 100, and that included the people squeezed into the back room with the bar and pool table. It was a fun night. BTW, Smashing Pumpkins opened for Screaming Trees at the same venue in an afternoon show.
Me as well. I've seen it on here for a while but decided to finally watch it. I was thinking it would be shitty quality but I was definitely wrong about that lol Dave's drums are fucking cannons!
I've seen probably 100 different performances of Teen Spirit. And this is the only one I've seen where Kurt says "Group" instead of "Tribe." My gosh, what a great freaking show. One of the best I've seen.
Everyone probably knows this but in the linear notes to the Lithium single the official lyrics were printed and it was supposed to be tribe. I always assumed he said group on the record by mistake, as he usually just made shit up anyways, musical genius that Kurt was.
imagine you think rock and roll is spandex, hairspray, and wacky ballads. then you hear this. wow. magical moment in music history. they brought magic back to rock.
Unreal. I was obsessed with nirvana. Expanded my musical interest since then, but I will always love nirvana. Really wish I could have experienced them live. Just imagine being there - lethal.
HANDS DOWN...My number 1 favorite video of nirvana that exist on the internet. What a kick ass performance in such a simple environment. THIS is what Nirvana was all about. I could feel the vibe of the room. My wife, son and I danced to the whole show. Amazing. Thanks for posting
went around town the entire week b4 the show telling folks they really ought to do thems a favor and check out this band. i still hear back from the people who blew it off about what idjits they were :)
Honestly this is possibly the best set list that I've seen nirvana perform, out of the hundreds of videos that I've seen, when you start the set with the Vaseline and here she comes now oh man the list keeps on getting better and better. This was the Nirvana show to see live right here.
If you told all the people at this show that this band would end up being the biggest band in the world, nobody would have believed it. This really is incredible footage and proof that anything can happen. The songs off of Nevermind are just really catchy without being cheesy. These guys were grinding for years for no money. They make a great video with a great song and the rest is history. I’m really glad I saw this today, thank you for posting it.
@@davecarsley8773 I am just over 50 now. No reason to lie. At the end of the show a bunch of kids carried Kurt into the bathroom and some guy propositioned Kurt. Kurt wasn't having any of that though.

So soon after Teen Spirit was released - the insane fame and success hasn't quite hit them yet, they're not totally jaded by it, and they're playing the song note for note like the original, as close as possible, which is something you didn't see much once they broke out the way they did. This is incredible.
Actually they played it well ive noticed at many venues it was played in a sarcastic manner for the big shows or for tv. Miami in late 93 show they did a great job playing it.
really great live version of teen spirit before it all became too "boring" for Kurt , but here one can really feel , i mean REALLY feel that intense energy pouring out from the performance
I was back in my dorm a couple mikes away studying for an Econ quiz during this show. Ugh. I had actually seen them earlier in the summer in Hollywood and figured I’d be a good student it being my freshman year and all. After watching this I got a pit in my stomach over having made such a poor choice. At least I got a chance to see them earlier that year-had I not done that I couldn’t live with myself. There are so damn good in this video. I caught them at the Palladium in Hollywood where the lineup was Hole, Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr. - an epic show.
The show that got away! I lived about 20 or minutes north of New Haven in Meriden, CT. I used to go to the Moon all the time. I was a high school senior at the time, and I recall specifically passing on this show. "Nirvana who?" I played at th Moon a couple times during their Monday open mic nights. I was terrible, but it's fun to think I played on the same stage in the same little New Haven club as one of the most innovative and transformative bands of my generation. Sure I had gotten off my ass and gone to the show -- and I can't even imagine what stupid thing I did instead.

funny, people out here in washington act like they own this band. esp. seattlites. they were from aberdeen, the armpit of the pacific NW and seattle "scoffed" at them when they first attempted seattle. this show was on the other side of the nation in fucking new haven CT (pizza mecca of the usa), b4 nevermind dropped. kris novaselich, even tho he says like he doesnt remember it now, was quoted as saying this was among if not his fav. all time show. we were there en masse. kurt put 25 of us on the g list, prompting the rightfully pissed promoter to "ban" them from any further shows there. not that it mattered. they were playing huge venues next month instead of seedy old ex-stripper bars. good times. kurt wasnt on dope at this show. all we could get for him was cough syrup.
no he was talking about the ones from the show in Denver Colorado dec.93. trust me i was there at the hospital when Kurt was born, i would know...
That's right!
Amanda Garza oh shut up you don’t know shit.

Kurt happily
Wrote us a check from their tour support account. We said goodbye and the band was off. I guess Brian's was right about renting to them. That check bounced, a further testament that tour lost money! Great to finally see the show I missed!
Thanks for sharing man! I love hearing this stuff. You should hit up Courtney for the $300.
Kurt’s signature on the check is definitely worth more than that $300 now. Great story!
Do you have that check stub with Kurt's signature? That would be a helluva collector's item!
this right here is why i love youtube. live music and stories like that. thank you for sharing Gary
If you still had that cancelled check you could probably sell it for more than $300.

this is one off the most important music videos i have ever watched. just before nevermind , tiny crowd, and the happiest Kurt ever was. he wanted to be like the melvins, black flag etc. and would have been happy to slowly build up a reputation over 20 years, instead we all know what happend and nevermind shattered him as he felt like a sellout. unfortunately what he didn't realize was he was such an artful composers and beautiful at phrasing his songs that he was never going to be a long term underground band, the music spoke to us all in our teens at the time across the world !
2 days after NEVERMIND Album!
he was so talented, he had the looks and the hooks, a perfect storm. He was a natural and surpassed them bands he loved but never saw himself as a talented creative person and felt like a fraud.

Love Kurt's energy in 1991. he was a lot more passionate here before he got tired of being famous and the drugs got bad

+Fer Abra Would like to know your meaning for "great image" haha Nirvana weren't best known for having a great image.
12truk great image in the context of music industry is a distinctive image that helps sell the band by making them stand out. They also set fashion trends that are alive to this day. That's a great image for rock, not a well tailored suit.
+Fer Abra
I get what you mean.
Great set and perfect size club for them. Probably their prime. May be the best bootleg video I have ever seen of Nirvana🤘🏻
no the perfect sized club is a littlw bit bigger than a baseball bat
@@mywhychromosome still if we were all there, we would be losin our minds 👾
@@Ohbubbano Haha, this is true, this is true...I have no doubt that had Cobain lived, they would've started doing 'secret' gigs under different names, or unannounced impulsive ones, at smaller venues. There is nothing like seeing a band equipped to play a huge venue in an environment intimate enough for a local band...I got to see Radiohead, for example, on a special tour they did to roadtest then-new material--it was nowhere near THIS small, but it was standing room only, and I got right in front of the stage...something special.
yeah, they liked smaller spaces instead of large halls for the shows

I was backstage at this concert. I was President of the US at the time and had just landed on Air Force 1, nearby.
HappilyWithMonotony crazy how stuff like that happens it’s literally a lottery

My gosh, what a great freaking show. One of the best I've seen.
He said "group" instead of "tribe" at quite a few shows at the beginning of this Fall tour. Boston, Montreal, Providence, NYC just to name a few.
Everyone probably knows this but in the linear notes to the Lithium single the official lyrics were printed and it was supposed to be tribe. I always assumed he said group on the record by mistake, as he usually just made shit up anyways, musical genius that Kurt was.

Sure I had gotten off my ass and gone to the show -- and I can't even imagine what stupid thing I did instead.
i think this is the closest we'll ever get to seeing Nirvana live. Great video, RIP Kurt you fucker...
