Kurt Cobain's life was never the same. After the release of their sophomore album, the juggernaut behind such hits as Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, and Something in the Way, Nirvana was catapulted into the stratosphere of success. They were on Saturday Night Live, MTV, and every rock magazine in the world. But as fame started to weigh on the front-man, Kurt's personal life started to interfere with the band. He moved away from bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, moved in with Courtney Love, and pursued extracurriculars that got him in some hot water. The cherry on top was the birth of his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, completely changing his priorities for the rest of his life.

As much as I admire Kurt, he did come across as a very troubled and unpleasant dude to be around. It's a shame we never got to see him grow and mature as a person.
finally a good take on him. I hear a lot of fans make him out to be perfect person with a good ethical view on life. Personally I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, just a depressed dude who didn't know his purpose in life. I really feel that once his life took a path to drugs, he found himself in a nearly inescapable pit. If he would have found peace in all his crosses, it surely would have been an amazing redemption story, but the alleged s**cide has locked that possibility in the past
frankly, he seems like an absolute asshole in his last couple years. The dude wrote great music, and he clearly struggled with mental health, but that doesn't excuse the fact that he treated people who cared deeply about him like absolute shit. For a man who apparently loved his daughter so deeply he clearly didn't love her enough to stick around to watch her grow up.

@@seanmckelvey6618 Kurt was clearly far from perfect, but reducing his struggles to ‘not loving his daughter enough’ completely misses the point of what he was going through. Severe depression, addiction, and chronic pain can make even the most loving person feel like a burden or trapped in a darkness they can’t escape. It’s not about a lack of love-it’s about battling demons that some people can’t understand unless they've been there. Sure, he might have hurt people close to him, but it wasn’t out of malice. It’s easy to criticize from the outside, but a lot harder to have compassion for someone suffering like he did. Comments like yours just come across as judgmental and dismissive of the complexity of mental illness.

Even when I would try not be I was super moody being depressed and other stuff definitely hurts people a lot and makes them seem like a asshole especially when your trying to hide some of the pain and what happened to you and you just want to tell people ( sorry if that was messy I try not to think about this stuff )

This is the most interesting Nirvana content I’ve seen in years. Entertaining watch, informative, something I could show to my grandma to understand Nirvana. Very very underrated you are. Love the incorporation of the tour footage. Really personable feel to the band. I hope the next gen of teens can see this as an ‘old’ TH-cam video and commend it for its deep dive. You are a filmmaker, cut and dry. Proud of this, and proud of you.

They met at a limbo competition. Both Kurt and Courtney were heavily into limbo and they were at the same contest.

I like Nirvana a good amount but im mostly a casual fan. A lot of this stuff is new to me, i honestly had no idea how rough Kurt's life had been. I had chills watching this, amazing video!

You know who I empathise most with in the Nirvana story? The Melvins. The band that shaped Kurt, practically formed Nirvana's lineup and was then shunned and forgotten after Kurt botched his role as producer for their album.

Shunned? Cobain chose them as Nirvana's opening act in Dec 93, after the release of Houdini and after they got rid of Cobain as producer because of his heroin problems.
In the book that most/all of the information this video comes from (Michael Azerrad’s “Come As You Are”), the author talks about how Kurt wanted to (and did) use his fame to promote Sub-Pop’s bands and other underground grunge bands. Basically had them perform with them on tour and such.
Fun fact: Dave grohl is not only a legend, but has appeared in more than 30 bands. 30 WHOLE BANDS
His ability to commit to multiple bands is truly admirable,makes me wonder if that transfers in some way to his personal life and the relationship with his family

I remember that Nirvana and Garth Brooks were #1 on the album charts every other week. And deservedly so. Both albums (Nevermind and Ropin’ The Wind) were incredible.

As much as I love Kurt and his music, he was a total shit head for pulling that move with the royalties and screwing Krist and Dave out of money. Come to think of it, there were a lot of things he did that just seem absolutely selfish and callous. For someone who preached so much about the ethics of Punk Rock, he ended up becoming one of those hypocrites that he so often rallied against... It's sad.
Sadly, he was an addict and needed money to keep spending 100 or 400 bucks daily...

Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne who went to high school with Kurt on Kurt’s stomach problem. “Kurt also told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with his stomach. He made it up for sympathy and so he could use it as an excuse to stay loaded. Of course he was vomiting - that’s what people on heroin do, they vomit. It’s called “vomiting with a smile on your face.”
Well Krist himself said he was driving Kurt to doctors etc I'd say Krist was around Kurt more than Buzz in later years.

Maybe the most devastating portrait I've come across of Love was in Kim Gordon's memoir, because it's so cold eyed, more a warning note about dealing with this person, than a vitriolic putdown. Gordon was well aware of the ubiquitous misogyny of the music industry (which Love often cited to defend herself) and she had firsthand experience working with Love when she produced Hole's debut EP (that's why she briefly shows up at 10:21). She describes Love as a magnetic performer, who was also a callous, manipulative, deeply unstable narcissist who wanted fame over everything else. She says that her immediate reaction, as well as that of everyone else on the scene, was that the Cobain-Love union was a very bad thing and a trainwreck waiting to happen. The acidic portrait stands out in her book because no one else is described with this degree of negativity - other than Love's ex, Billy Corgan, who she labels a crybaby that nobody liked and had nothing to do with punk music, despite his poses.

status to a romantic hero and when he died we believed it was not his fault, but it was due to his wife because she stole him from us, like Yoko Ono who was blamed for breaking the Beatles, Courtney is blamed for not taking good care of Kurt.

Much of the printed lore regarding Kurt and Courtney is absolute BS, esp the Courtney bits. She leaked false items and embroidered stories including the post-SNL Kurt OD story. Won't know much of the truth any time soon either. Soaked in Bleach doc was very sketchy, they both made up a lot stuff people accepted as gospel and she had full control of the final cut. Same for the Charles Cross (RIP) books, again it was Courtney controlling the narrative.

Main difference in Kurt after nevermind is Kurt planned his retirement after they blew. Kurt knew he wasn't really a musician. He was an artist n used three chord progressions to express his poetry. After in utero Kurt pretty much tapped out n he knew it well before writing it. Kurt set himself up in his contract n unreleased hit songs to ensure way more success and money after he disappeared n nirvana broke up. Sure he doesn't like his business partner (Courtney) taking so much heat without being unable to let out the truth. Kurt got to be the biggest rock star of his generation. Go down in history. N reclaim his anonymity. Kurt won. Watch Tom grants doc expose the many holes in his suicide. Makes more sense Kurt faked his death than was murdered by Courtney. While being on top of the world Kurt made connections with some serious ppl. He couldn't help but brag on numerous occasions he had the power to have ppl disappear. N Kurt being the most cynical personality he's the type to be hellbent on revenge against ppl who did him wrong. What did Eminem say "if I get killed for this rap I got a million in cash that says I will get you back in Hailey's name". Kurt loved how the media spins stories n he used it to push false narratives. Kurt also said he thinks his origins are around cork county Ireland. Says he never felt so connected to a place in his life. Bet he disappeared somewhere around there. Bet he regrets saying something that truthful as well.
