This small period from mid 91 to early 92 was the best Nirvana you’ll see. (Apart from Unplugged) Nirvana weren’t meant to play big arenas, it just didn’t make any sense. The In Utero shows lacked something, there was something so powerful about 3 guys in smaller venues, creating a storm.

And when we heard the next summer that they were coming to Michigan in the fall, we got that day off & drove to Club Soda in Kalamazoo to see their first MI show. There were maybe 40-50 people there, and Nirvana blew my mind, the amount of energy they put out was staggering! Right after the show I saw Kurt head straight to the bar, and surprisingly I went over & said something like, “hey man, INCREDIBLE set!” We talked for a few minutes about his music, but I didn’t wanna be a dick so I walked away pretty quickly. Found my friends & right there decided we were going to be at their show the next night at the Blind Pig. The Pig was packed! That night the crowd matched the energy put off by the band, and until St Andrews, was the best show I’d ever seen! And yeah, it is neat being at a place a hero played. Wow, I was 22 and lived about 10 minutes from st andrews, what was I thinking not going to this ? I think the problem at the time was I was a guitarist myself and mainly into van halen, nugent, sabbath, Trower and GNR and I thought Nirvana was mostly incoherent babbling and repetitive power chords, I was much more into the more technical players and basically didn't pay much attention to Nirvana ,, Took me years to come around and appreciate them more but yeah, if I had it all over to do again I for sure would have been there.

I saw this show with only hearing nirvana a few times. I was living in Canada but driving down to MSU to visit friends on a regular basis since I was on disability at the time and out of school. I remember we almost got busted in Detroit for buying illegal substances. Who gets busted in Detroit was the saying of the night... The sound doesnt do it justice. This was a great show, but the best early live show from the big Seattle bands was the Soundgarden Badmotorfinger tour. They were on fire.

Saw them two nights earlier at a club in Columbus with a capacity of about 250. Urge Overkill opened. Saw NIrvana the year before at the same club and a local band called Barbed Wire Dolls opened. BWD were known for trying to piss off people. They covered Breed in their set as openers. Nirvana had a different drummer before Grohl at the time. When he heard BWD playing Breed he started laughing his head off. A friend who worked at the club said Kurt got real upset with the drummer.

Was at both of those shows. Missed Barbed Wire Dolls the first time because we were at The Newport to see Social Distortion. Walked out and a guy was passing out 1/4 page flyers that said Nirvana @ Staches $3 with your SD ticket. Good times. Right up there with the GG Allin show.
