    Muay Thai is more popular than ever thanks to the UFC, Glory, K-1, and other MMA and kickboxing federations. But some people don't really know the different between Muay Thai and Kickboxing. In fact, just the other day someone asked me what arts I studied, and when I mentioned Muay Thai they said, "That's like kicks 'n stuff, right?" Not really...

    A more technical difference between Kickboxing and Muay Thai is the body movements and planes of motions. Muay Thai is very much about rotation around the transverse plane, when throwing low kicks, head kicks, elbows, kness, and mostly, the clinch. These techniques require knowledge and skill on learning how to rotate the body and use the kinetic energy to transfer to exploding power as your strike too
    I suppose in comparison, Kickboxing is as technical, but in a different sense. I feel that Kickboxing has way too many organisations and different associations have different "rules" and it just feels unnatural to be held back by so many rules. Muay Thai is very brutal and natural and Kickboxing is more technical and "flashy"
    I train both and enjoy both equally as well :)

    • @Jenkins1155

      +Hendra Subrata Basically. If you go in order of least complete to most complete forms of fighting it goes first regular Boxing, then Kickboxing, then Muay Thai, and then MMA. Each level adds another thing you can do, in boxing only punching is allowed, in kickboxing you can do everything you can do in boxing plus kicking, in muay thai you can do everything you can do in kickboxing plus, elbows, knees, and the clinch, and finally in MMA you can do everything you can do in muay thai plus fight on the ground (wrestling, ground and pound and submissions).

    I hope K-1 gonna come back and allow elbow-strikes. Anyway, if elbows are that dangerous, why large Kickboxing organizations don't make fighters wear thick elbow pads? Amateurs in Muay-Thai use them. You actually can google it. They would make elbows less dangerous and clinch will have bigger role in Kickboxing than today. Thumbs up if you agree.

    You can win a fight in muay thai without throwing a punch or kick. You still have knees, elbows and grappling. There are specialists in muay thai with nicknames like "The elbow hunter" "Sky piercing knee". Some specialize in clinches like Dieselnoi while someone like saenchai would be a traditional striker.

    Shane I would love to have trained with you when I started in 79 .... what a mess the martial arts world was ! When I was doing traditional style I was reading magazines with bill Wallace and Beni Uequidez and thinking what am I doing? I got to usa and did American karate which at least was a little bit more realistic and back in Europe I had done kyukoshinkai so at least I was better prepared for dealing with street aggression.. but compared to the technical level these days we were groping in the dark and jeet kune so was on a lot of people's minds because a change has to come .... a six month boxing student could take most black belts ...anyway keep up the good work I think your vibe and your channel are the best on TH-cam..and I like your husky !

    I love your work Shane because it has helped me today, today I was jumped by some kids at school and they demanded I fight the strongest one in the group, I told them no so they got ahold of my neck in a choke hold so I did the blocking to prevent and get out of the choke hold it worked so the big guy got ahold of me and hit me so I said, ok I will fight him not because I want to but because self defense, so I got at him from long distances and destroyed him, he then began to cry with his blood dripping from his nose and the school students were watching from the Windows, (This is during lunch by the way) and I am now the talk of the school. After school I met up with the kid that tried to harm me, (he is a 11grader) and ask if we could stop this stuff between us not be friend if you want but just stop this he said ok so I'm waiting for Monday too see what's to come of us

    • @kommentieren52
      @kommentieren52 7 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      What you need for a street fight is a system not a sport.
      A BJJ fighter for example would be totally fucked if there are multiple attackers and a muay thai guy will most likely throw a (for the streat) wrong hook and break his hand without his gloves

    • @eliqk3qt2rg5v
      @eliqk3qt2rg5v 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      TheWildCardA that's a great combo but I think you should throw some wrestling, judo and boxing to go that.

    • @eliqk3qt2rg5v
      @eliqk3qt2rg5v 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      kommentieren52 they are systems... there's just competitions as sports for muay thai and bjj. also muay thai fighters wouldnt throw a wrong hook cuz they train to master how to use all 8 limbs and they train to use all 8 correctly plus they tend to use elbows, knees and kicks more than punches and I don't think anyone would try to do any bjj related stuff I there were multiple attackers. and some arts that are combat sports are derived from a brutal predecessor martial art that is for self defense or a clean up, sport variation of it. like how muay thai is the cleaned up sport version of the deadlier muay boran and how bjj is derived from judo and Japanese jujitsu which was used by samurai.

    • @kommentieren52
      @kommentieren52 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      by "wrong" i mean their normal hook wich can easyly break their nuckels if they dont have gloves. And the point is if you do bjj releated stuff on the street against a single attacker you NEVER KNOW if another one will come from behind or smth

    Kickboxing is confusing because some organisations label it as kickboxing yet it shares the shame belt system as karate as have weapon and form divisions in competitions which is obviously just forms that have been taken from karate so it’s hard to pin down what kick-boxing is since some clubs like my old club has a very strong connection to there origins , being that of karate , since kickboxing was originally invented by a fight promotion company and the kicks in it are largely based on karate .

    If you're good enough at what little or what (lot) you know, you can
    defeat many disciplines, part of the equation is whether there are
    rules involved. Remember Bruce Lee; ''10,000 reps on one move is better
    than 1 rep on 10,000 moves'' to paraphrase..

  • @XNOW716

    To sum it up even more, its basically in the rules and prefered techniques. What I got out of cross training in different arts is Muay Thai is more power based with slow steps, power punches, hard kicks using the shin, and of course clinching elbows and knees. American style kickboxing was basically boxing with above the waist kicks with foot and no elbows or long clinches. U can see it in mma fighters stand up. If they use kickboxing they're probably fast with the hands, light on their feets, kick fast and almost never use elbows. Watch a GLORY match or an old World Combat league fight, then watch a match from Lion Fights or an old Lupanee match and you can tell its all in the rule set. In GLORY they make you fight under "kickboxing" rules

    kyokushin karate or american kickboxing uses free kicks and free punches you know when you kick and pull your kick back instantly.it is effective for speed but causes alot less damage in reality whereas in muay thai whole power comes from twerk they don't pull back their punches and kicks like karate fighter would do insted they go and smash the target completely.the difference between karate and other kick boxing and muay thai is like the difference in the punch of karate and punch of boxing

    You don´t talk about guard, its some necesary to mention cause, just on the stand, kickboxers adopt a very side position if u understand, and that makes more vulnerably to low kicks, for example, and kickboxers have a style less agressive, they dont really play that game of roundhouses and blocks, counters, front kicks for distance, nak muays arey simply more prepared to hit and receive, and a very strong hits!! its a definite style "lethality" without free styles on him, but of course many have combined well, and yes, if you get too much to they, elbows and knees will crash u

      I think it just depends on what ruleset you want to fight under. Kickboxers nowadays train in multiple disciplines. Muay thai is probably one of the more popular ones.
      Edit: Also, different promotions might have slightly different rules.

    • @spenserfarthing3898
      @spenserfarthing3898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Porras 36 No? Because it does depend and goes more to preference and the rules to the fight. Some people don't really like clinching that often, so the go more in the kickboxing rout. And some other people also find more use coming from boxing, because they are better with their hands and just have more fun with it. Any of them will work for self defense, so don't bring that up to me. The only practiced and practical martial art that is questionable outside of a ring is jui jitsu and wrestling, since all it takes is the guy your beating up to have a friend or two of his to kick you in the back or something while on the ground.

    I'm by no means an expert but I find it interesting and often disappointing how many westerners (or people not from the country and culture of a martial art) tend to bypass the historical, cultural and spiritual elements and just go for the fighting/ physical stuff - that seems to be the case often here anyway (I'm in New Zealand). I've only recently started learning Muay Thai after boxing for a couple of years - I'm spending a month in Thailand in July (out in a rural village in Issan mainly) so I'm not just learning skills and techniques for the physical side but also as a gateway to learning something of their culture - I wonder how many westerner Muay Thai people can string together a sentence in Thai? Obviousoly its not necessary but yeah I'm just curious!

    • @BrentStrathdeePehi
      @BrentStrathdeePehi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +pulp1405 It's always good to be in the best physical condition you can achieve - in any sport - but definitely in combat sports. there's fit, there's very fit and then there's 'fighting fit' which is on a whole new level. Don't worry about the fact that you've never really fought, many people enter into martial arts from the same place (including me). although it is a fighting sport you can always place the emphasis on the 'sport'...

    • @pranakhan
      @pranakhan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its true, in the West people have a negative reaction to the cultural & spiritual aspects of Martial Arts. Maybe religion has a role to play, maybe its just a socio-cultural disconnect. I suppose the bright side is that over a long enough span of time, the physical training will manifest the other aspects if conditions allow for it. My advice to people is to train the old fashioned way when you can. Train in isolation from friends & family; no tech, no media. Your only partners are your breath and your heartbeat. Then, it can become something else.

    • @BrentStrathdeePehi
      @BrentStrathdeePehi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know that the reaction is negative, more that most just simply ignore it or bypass it - they probably just see it as an unnecessary auxiliary element that simply isn't important. Imo, it's worth looking at how the people of the country/culture that the martial art comes from see it and learn from that. In Thailand there are many traditions that go with Muay Thai like the wai-kru dance etc. When I did a few classes with an older Thai instructor he told me its important to speak Thai while learning and in his opinion that was the 'right' way to learn

      Brent Strathdee-Pehi Personally, I have a lot of experience with the spiritual world, and I know a lot that most people have no idea of.
      Eastern martial arts (the traditional styles) were integrating a lot of spiritual exercises that ultimately do a lot of harm spiritually and even physically.

    Im 15 and have been trying to find a fightstyle that is all round and could possibly compete with other martial arts. Now I am not 100% but I heard Krav Maga is if you are fighting multiple people with no rules and dealing with weapons. I am trying to get one since I am in High School. Im probably never gonna get into a fight but I wanna be sure I atleast can fight. But I have problems choosing which one that can compete with most Martial Arts since I have only been in one and It was horrible. If someone knows the difference or has been in one of these let me know. Krav Maga or Muay Thai.

  • @Prime_Legend

    Kickboxing. Saying that Muay thai is just kickboxing with punches and kicks is wrong. Muay thai stance is more narrow, square and flat-footed, limiting a lot of mobility to sacrifice the effectiveness of blocking kicks(which is why they stand in front of each other and raise their legs a lot) and honestly, this type of stance and kicking defense is very flawed. Mobility is important for MMA, very. You got smaller gloves so movement is more important and takedowns. Some could easily do a leg kick and immediately shoot right in for a takedown, succeeding due to the narrow thai stance. Another thing is boxing. Boxing is a big part of MMA. In Muay thai, boxing don't socre unless they appeared to stun your opponent or cause a knock down. For this reason, a lot of thai fighters will use only like 20% of their hands in sparring and will not even bother to defend the punches or simply cover up with long guard, standing in place. Headmovement is another thing. Headmovement is important to. And finally, tactics. Kickboxers are more technical. They use more feints and head movement. i see a lot of thai fighters feint by lifting their leg up! which is a no no
    In summary if you didn't want to read all that. Muay thai has more weapons but lacks the fundementals.

      You are likely throwing the hook wrong. When throwing a hook, the fist, wrist and forearm should all be perfectly straight so there isn't stress on the wrist. If you throw a hook without the three being perfectly straight then there will be a lot of stress on the wrist tendons and ligaments which will cause pain and damage.

      I can only agree with you.
      Generally you can say that you should never hit anything without wraps, because your wrist is rather fragile.
      Pay attention to the wrapping, technique is key. Focus on stabilising your wrist, so you don't get hurt
