They didn't hurt at first but those same weak kicks after a few minutes I was feeling it in my soul I would tell my partner horrible things after each kick, biggest bruises I've ever had on my body till this day. 10/10 would do it again

    When you said you started at 27 smoked a pack a day and drank like a fish it really alleviated all the doubt I had joining the gym. I’ve gone to boxing gyms at different points of my life but was never consistent with it for a sustained period, I just moved to the city and there’s a Thai boxing gym 15 minutes walking from me I want to make the sacrifice to fulfill my lifelong ambition of being a martial artist. My only other concern is I work a very physically demanding job and I’m worried of performance decline at my work

    • @DrGetgood
      @DrGetgood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Same here. My advice: start slow. Like one or two classes per week and just build that up from there.

    • @JeffPenaify
      @JeffPenaify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@DrGetgood that’s what I was thinking cause I already know I’m gonna be fried early on. How long have you been at it so far?

    • @CombatCultureUSA
      @CombatCultureUSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +293

      When I first started, i was working a physically demanding job as well, as another viewer suggested, start slow, with a few classes a week, making sure you rest well every night.
      For me, every time I had the opportunity to train gave me a jolt of adrenaline, regardless of how tired I was during the day, and helped me sleep easier as well.
      Fully support you pursuing your lifelong ambition of being a martial artist, the physical part is just one piece of the journey. Best of luck!

    • @DrGetgood
      @DrGetgood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@JeffPenaify Just over a month. I hadn't done a lot of real physical exercise over the last year so I knew I had to start slow. I did 3 classes on my first week, and each week I've made sure that I attend one more than the previous. So at this point I'm doing two kickboxing classes, a muay thai class, and four BJJ classes a week (in the gi). This week I'm going to start transitioning into no-gi stuff, and maybe try out the TKD class that my gym offers.
      Not to be an armchair philosopher or any bullshit like that, but just remember: whatever you decide to do, it's a personal journey. As long as _you_ are growing and improving then that's what matters. Take it at whatever pace is best for you. And definitely make sure you allow your body to adjust, and recover and what not.

    • @DrGetgood
      @DrGetgood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@CombatCultureUSA I second this, and I can't stress enough the importance of rest. I've made the mistake of not sleeping enough on certain days and it seriously fucks you up when you're doing all this physical activity. It seems obvious but I've underestimated the importance of good sleep on a few occasions.

      That’s good to know. I’m 35 was contemplating Muay Thai. They have a gym next to my home. There is the beginner class where they teach basics and bag work. Sparring is reserved for specialists. If I can learn proper form to punch bags and do kicks that’ll do. Also I heard Muay Thai is great for cutting. Especially last 10 lbs to reach 10 percent body fat, fast punches and kicks should activate type 2 muscle fibers too. Btw I’m motivated by you, you started at 40. I used to think 35 was too late for me. My dilemma is I’ll have to stop weight training to take up Muay Thai for 1.5 years to learn the basics.

Additionally, get yourself a private lesson every now and then....it's worth it.

This gym next to my house has all age groups including people in our age bracket as well as folks in their 60s. I found one that has a competition reputation, been there for 8 months and no one will baby me because I am new, I get a couple guys occasionally will go easy on me and let me learn, but a smirk from the more experienced guys is when I know that I've pushed hard enough, starting from the peers, the coaches teach well and that they have done their part it's up to me to not give in, not there to get pep talk and cuddles, the training is the pep talk, and getting slam on the matt is the cuddle, at the end of the day it's up to you if you want a cruiseier environment, that's personal preference 😁

  • @MegaRhettButler
    @MegaRhettButler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +421

    You sort of mentioned this but I'd say cutting toenails extra short is good advice because when you're new you can mess up kicks and end up ripping your toenail off on the pads. That happened to me a couple of times. Also don't daydream when you're pad holding or you get kicked in the face. That happened to me a lot too. Not doing hard sparring until you know the basics is a good idea as well. I got rocked pretty bad going to a sparring class in my second week of training.

    26 year old here and here is my warning to anyone before doing it
    1-Fix your cardio and basic fitness levels before starting
    2-Fix your flexibility to at least be mediocore before starting
    3-Get your schedule in order
    if you dont do these 3 things before starting you will find your first month doing it hell, and a total waste of money as you ask yourself "why am i paying over a hundred bucks a month for a class i barely go to, feel like shit while doing and dont have time for"
    You wanna get to a mediocore athletic level of fitness in the first two points I met, for if you dont do this you wont be able to do any of the tricks they are teaching you, you will have no power when you do do them, and even if you can, you will get gassed out in the first ten minutes of class if you dont fix your cardio.
    Lastly get your schedule in order, if you are working 40 hour weeks, and trying to add in Martial arts, something in your schedule is going to be bumped out, figure out what matters the least to you and figure out what you can kick out without hurting your quality of life before doing martial arts. many people under estimate how time consuming it is and thus burn out quickly

Key word properly because your 1000% gonna do mistakes while practicing kcisks and punches and therefore you can easily form bad habits and techniques. I'm about two weeks in regularly and the biggest compliment I get that matters the most to me is that I have the right attitude. I instantly fell in love, and also broke my hand, but I came back the next day anyway lol. I had some kickboxing experience so it was super different, but it was different enough to notice. Anyway, now you’ll see me in a gym 5 days a week. I was about 18 when I started and I’ve loved every second of it. Don’t be afraid to try new things, you never know what will stick

    I started sparring since the first day. It's definitely the thing that gave me more confidence and mind power. Being kicked in the ass first days makes you more humble and it helps you to use your head, analyse the others and know yourself better while youre fighting much sooner. I've been hurt specially with low trained opponents.
    I think sparring every session make you improve really much faster. Also I feel that because of it, enviroment is much more respectful this way.

    So I recently tried out Muay thai at a local gym and i fell in love. With that being said I will speak on the question of " Contact with others?" my first class was a lil over load for me because even though it is a beginners class it was full immersion into partnering up with someone that had more experience then you. My first partner has been training for 2 years already and here I am green to muay thai and trying to do 4,5,6 combo drills while trying to learn proper technique. I wish there was a bag class or at least a little more structured lesson for those who are just starting. With that being said don't let it freak you out just thought someone would like to hear my experience. I am going to try out another gym and see which one I like.

I was looking into new sports to do there then, and was reluctant to combat sports because I'm not much of a fighter in my spirit, but you video was a great tool to understand that muay thai can be used as a way to stay in shape while not having to fight in an obligatory manner, so now I'm curious and will probably try it out in the next weeks. Also I'm 26 so you saying that you got into it at 27 really resonated with me.

      @@Ibeecjayy It went well, right now I've transitioned away from striking into a normal workout regiment. But Muay Thai was important for my growth and development. I was in a bad place in my life before I tried it.
      It helped me sleep, focus, feel like I was working towards something. Since trying it out, I've:
      -Lost weight
      -Been less stressed
      -Fixed my sleep schedule
      -Greatly reduced video games and other distractions from my life
      -Found a career path I'm in the middle of pursuing, self taught
      The career I'm pursuing is computer programming, something that the damage to wrists, hands, and head from Muai Thai could put at risk.
      But I'm still grateful that I gave it a good, thorough try because it brought a lot of benefits to my life. Not to make it sound so black and white, but before Muay Thai, I had nothing of importance going on in my life, and afterwards, it guided me to where I'm at now, which is a much better place.
      Definitely consider the damage to your body and brain. Once I'm off of a 40hr/week work +40hr/week study schedule, I'm considering transitioning from regular exercise to BJJ
