  • There was already a spider lord commander in the form of Ishkanah. However, Shelob provides a very interesting ability not seen on any other commander - lord effect or otherwise.

    To anyone building this deck, please keep in mind that Academy Manufactors effect is a replacement, so the food tokens created by Shelobs effect would not be copies of the killed creatures.

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, very true! Thanks for specifying. I didn’t mention it when discussing its ability; I simply mentioned also getting the clue and treasure. But the food will be replaced.

    The pronunciation of this card’s name is SHEE-lobb. Short O.
    If it were some random new legend I probably wouldn’t care, but this creature has had a name for almost a century.

    My first brew was full of "fight" spells. I realized it is an extremely slow gameplan, especially in commander multiplayer and against elves, goblins etc with lots of tokens.
    My newer version is based on "lure" spells (every creature blocks this turn if able) and indestructible/regeneration effects. It's wildly effective :)

    Isnt academy manufacturer a replacement effect? So you would get the food token, but you wouldnt get the abilities of the creature that died, it would just be a normal food. Either way, nice deck tech.

    • @TheCommanderTavern

      Yeah, Academy Manufactor gives you normal food along with the treasure and clue. Unfortunately.

    Soul's Majestry is a bit risky, sorcery speed and people can kill the target and you get nothing. Except for that I will use this list as a reference when I update my spider deck, currently hosted by Ishkanah. The deck is currently focused on the graveyard, so there will be a total overhaul. I am just a bit worried the deck becomes too dependent on the commander, so I might replace some of the cards which are dependent on having the commander on the field i.e. power matters cards. Thanks for the video!

    Had a bright idea the other night, while looking over your build... Decided to see what happens if I go full on murder-spiders, making the composition roughly 2/3 Tyranids and 1/3 spiders with some good death trigger and counter merging strategies. So, you can still Voltron Shelob, but now you have a viable front -line army that can consolidate their counters if need be.

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh!! I love the flavor of also putting tyranids in there!

      @@TheCommanderTavern For sure, and they flesh out the otherwise weak bodies with some seriously scalable DIY beaters. Also adds a huge late game option to Shelob and a way to funnel your counters up to make her a mega-beast. All you need spiders for, like you say, is to have a sniper line to kill and steal.

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jstengren Yeah, using spiders to snipe via fighting is definitely a great sneak stat that will keep opponents super anxious throughout XD

    I cannot possible recommend Cosmic Hunger enough. Instant speed removal that can also be used to target your own utility creatures. Fynn about to get exiled? Cosmic Hunger to kill him and turn him into a food.

      I considered making the deck have a bunch of these fight spells but figured that would be a one-time only thing, which I tend to avoid in commander, since it's a multiplayer format.
      However, you bring an excellent point. It's absolutely amazing in response to someone's own removal. Because you use removal of your own as the spite play but still get your creature back as a food token copy. Brilliant!

      @@TheCommanderTavern for some reason, the very first thing I thought of was looking for ways to kill my own stuff with pings, bites, fights, etc. There aren't many. Ulvenwald Tracker and Viridian Longbow can do it too.

    Great explanations, much appreciated! I've got a list of deck ideas for Shelob that I've been gathering, and so far this one looks the most promising! Though, going to have to find more budget alternatives to many of the pricey cards listed. Unless you can provide some ideas?
    Looking for cheaper alts to:
    Bitterhorn
    Champion's Helm
    Hammer of Nazahn
    Kindred Dominance
    Mithril Coat
    Sword of the Animist
    The Great Henge
    Thornbite Staff

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Glad you got some use out of it!
      Yeah, unfortunately some of these cards have increased in price since first released.
      - Bitterthorn and Sword of the Animist could be replaced by Arcane Signet and Golgari Signet.
      - Champion's Helm and Hammer of Nazahn could be replaced by Darksteel Plate and Lightning Greaves. Mithril Coat is only going to go up in price. I do suggest you try and snag one while you can, if only for that reason.
      - Kindred Dominance can be replaced by In Garruk's Wake.
      - The Great Henge can be replaced by Savvy Hunter.
      - Thornbite Staff doesn't have any equivalent replacements, so I'd just swap it out for Peregrin Took so as to have even more card advantage, then.
      Hope that helps!

    • @TheCommanderTavern

      Pathway Arrows won't untap Shelob; that's not an effect in its ability. All it does is have Shelob deal 1 damage to a creature when you activate it.

    Can you kill Shelob with one of your own spiders to create a copy of her or no?

    • @TheCommanderTavern
      @TheCommanderTavern  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately Shelob's ability specifies "other" creature, meaning it won't trigger off of itself. If you want to make multiple Shelob copies you're going to have to go with the tried and true method of equipping it with Helm of the Host.
