Prius vs GTI - Can tires help the Hybrid be a Hot Hatch? | Everyday Driver

  • As part of our time with the updated (and finally good looking) Toyota Prius, we took of the high-MPG / Low-grip tires and replaced them with something from our friends at Vredestein. Can something as simple as a wheel and tire change elevate the Prius to the level of the iconic VW GTI? A trip to our local canyons during the height of fall seemed like the best way to document the changes and see how much our MPG suffered.

      @@Xander1Sheridan The 2L used in the Prius (both Prime and non-Prime), can be retuned to produce 300+hp. So says Toyota. We bought our Prime for economy so, we're not really trying to break speed records, still, it's nice to know that, if required, the car can move. In EV Mode, I've had to sprint out of the way several times already. The thing is quick off the line.

    I’ve followed this channel for quite awhile, and content like this is why. Your “feet on the ground” car guy attitude matches my own. The Phaeton enthusiasm! The Miatas! And now this hot-looking new Prius… and yes, tires and wheels transform almost any car. I drive a mint, nearly 20-year-old E320-CDI Benz. The diesel has torque for miles and it handled well-enough on the stock wheels and decent all-seasons, but recently acquired 18” E55 wheels and new Michelin Pilots, It was transformed. The next change was Bilstein B6 shocks/struts and Akebono pads with new rotors. Amazing, great looks, stable and comfortable handling on twisty mountain roads and I’ve gotten as high as 41mpg on the highway, but the way I normally drive it’s more usual around 36 hwy, 25 city. If I didn’t love this Benz so much, If VWs were more reliable, I’d have a GTI, but now I’d consider a hot rod Prius.

    I had a 2010 Prius with 270k miles on it that I purchased at auction for $400 because it had a blown head gasket and red triangle of death.
    $1500 later I put a rebalanced array in it, rebuilt the engine, cleaned the EGR cooler, and installed a set of pilot sport 4s on aftermarket lightweight wheels I scored at a junkyard just to see what would happen.
    Anyway, it was impressive enough I ordered front and rear sway bars, upgraded the brakes, and installed a set of used BC coil overs I scored on a message board by trading some stuff for a Miata I had laying around.
    It was so much fun coming up and pushing limp bois through Angeles Crest in cars that should have smoked me everywhere, not just straights.
    It still returned 44mpg on my commutes and ran great until I parted it out after getting rocked by a suburban CrossFit commando wannabe vet bro in a Ram TRX at, no joke, a Starbucks drive thru.
    He was so sure he had the right of way coming out of the pickup… until the cop showed up and looked at my dash cam footage.
    Guy floored it to get ahead of a Prius passing through the parking lot because his manhood couldn’t take the insult only he perceived.
    Full blown broadside ramming.
    Prius took the hit like a champ and I drove it home (had to exit out the passenger side) and kept driving it until I got my checks.
    Only thing slower to 60 was a shopping cart blown by wind in a Walmart parking lot, but that little hybrid was a riot and built for shaming guys with fat wallets and thin skills behind the wheel.

      Projected....as the CT200H demonstrated, even a Toyota hybrid could have engine design issues. Even so, I'd roll the dice on this over any other car these days and as I get tired of wrenching on my own cars, I'm eyeing EVs despite some of the issues. Maybe a hybrid would be a good onramp for me if they can just give me 250-300hp, similar torque and high 30's (not asking for high 40's lol) mpg.

    My wife drove a 2010 Prius which was an embarrassing slug off the line, but handled corners and snow like a champ. There was something about the weight distribution that gave the car great balance and much to my surprise handled corners like it was on a rail. The new Prius really caught my eye and when we needed to replace the 2010, I started searching for a 2024 model which was in super short supply. Finally saw a Limited AWD with all the right goodies and raced to the dealer and scooped it right out from another buyer who was on their way. Talk about a smooth ride - this car is a joy to drive. My daily driver was a 2017 Audi Allroad Prestige with a few tricks, which I run with separate sets of summer/winter rims and tires. The stock skinny tires on the new Prius just don't do it, and when cornering at speed, they lose grip quick. This video is just what I was looking for. I now drive about 1,000 miles a week for work and the Prius is now my daily drive, and I am not gentle with her. With the dynamic drive mode set at 80 -85 mph I've been getting 44.9 mpg on my trips (along coastal New England), but the car is squirrely as hell on the highway at speed. No triple digit mph drives like the Audi, but damn the miles go by effortlessly. The new Prius seats are totally fine IMHO. Fit and finish on the Prius interior is quite good, but the even with the upgraded JBL sound, it doesn't come anywhere close to the banging Bang & Olufsen 19 speaker stock sound in the Audi. Ya gotta have good tunes! I will definitely be going in for this tire set up and will also be looking for a set of winter tires to fit the stock rims if possible. Any recommendations?

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @phattyhales it still would have been nice to compare. If I drive nice I can get ridiculously good fuel economy out of this car. I really love the ground making sure I stay under 70 miles per hour on the freeway I can cruise at 40 miles per gallon and end up in the mid thirties or even closer to 40 Mi per gallon at the end of a road trip with some stops for Taco Bell. First time I drove the car starting at 500 me when I picked it up in georgia, driving all the way back up through to central Michigan I averaged 37 miles per gallon with 4 Taco Bell stops, a bathroom break and a 20-mile off freeway detour to spend the night at my grandma's and I was playing with the different modes (sport normal eco comfort) at different points while running the air conditioner cuz it was mid July.

      @@NoZenithAre those real, calculated fuel economy figures? Or are you just reading the fuel economy estimate off of the gauge cluster screen?

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @sawyermartin4434 well I only had put four tanks through it, but it coincided really well with what was reading on the head unit. My car does a long-term and a per fuel tank fuel economy estimate. I will be very honest here and say I have not been keeping up with documenting how many gallons I get and what the mileage is like I used to to get the real numbers but I feel I get slightly less fuel economy now than I used to because perhaps I'm not driving as nicely as I did back then. As I understand it the mechatronic unit, which is the computer that actually shifts the dual-clutch gearbox, actually has some kind of learning software so it will actually change slightly how it works to compensate for your driving Style and while I'm not a dick in traffic, I kind of point and go and don't stress over accelerating haha. I'm almost exclusively City driving at this point and have bare minimum 6 stops in my nine mile trip 6 days a week to work with as many as 10 stops depending on what lights I hit or don't hit. According to the head unit I'm averaging anywhere between 27 and 30 miles per gallon but I was kind of running behind several days last week and rushing to work so that definitely pulls my fuel economy back a bit

    I’d love to see you compare your hopped up Prius to the, last of the breed, manual transmission 2019-present Nissan Versa with a similar treatment. The Nissan can be purchased new with a 16k sticker price, basically half what the Toyota sells for. Curious to see if a manual adds enough fun and engagement to compete.

    Happy. Add an OBD2 virtual tach- completely changes how u drive the car. Third, at standing start, with foot on brake, gently step on gas while still standing.. Somehow this tells the computer to engage both M/G's when launching=much better acceleration off the line.

    Ok, not exactly a comparison, but I found that the 220x40x18 setup on an older GTI is a good swap out for my 2015 Prius4. Also, 3 things that change 2015 (gen3) perfirmance with little $$: replace air intake with Injen cold air direct air intake completely changes engine/car perfoance- both hp & mpg, the engine is uncorked & happy

    Tires are too narrow on the Prius, and tire options are nonexistent , driving a 2017 Subaru Impreza with stock 225/40 R18's stock size, but on Michelin Pilot PA4 (performance winter tire) makes the car handle like a dream thru turns, heavy braking and full time AWD but only 150 HP. 182 HP on the new Impreza or 196HP on the Prius, both are tempting, but tire and aftermarket brake pads options are better on Subaru and can't find a Prius to test drive anywhere.......what the guys did is a nice move to improve the car.

    • @phattyhales
      @phattyhales 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Theoretically it would be the similar to what we experienced but likely ever so slightly lower than our numbers because of the extra weight the taller tire would carry. But I don't think that would have a very big impact on the results.

    • @Chris_Wolfgram
      @Chris_Wolfgram 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wonder how much higher the mileage would have gone, if they had left the HP alone, and not concentrated on the looks and the handling.
      If Toyota needed a new little sports car, they should have just used this, and put a different name on it.
      Then gave me my ugly, lower powered, not as good handling 22'.... But now it gets 60+ MPG's ! Whoo hoo 🙂

      34 mpg when you're throwing it through mountain roads is insanely good. and if you get the prime, most of your commute is going to be fully electric anyways for most people. honestly, right now this is the car i'm most considering to replace my IS200 down the line (at least as my daily. if there's any way i can keep this thing as a weekend/project car i'm going to). unless lexus actually pulls through and gives us a decent electric 5IS. the prius is gorgeous, practical, economical, and somehow just cool.

      This is my only question from the whole video! I drive a 2018 GTI Autobahn so I've got the Eco Mode so I can easily pull 30mpg average daily driving (or switch it to normal mode and have a blast in traffic) if I'm even reasonably nice and drive like I don't have as much torque available. I can cruise on the freeway at nearly 40 miles per gallon as long as I'm not going up into the Hills. I want THEIR actual mpgs for as direct a comparison as can be made.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NoZenith Indeed GTI's can get pretty darn good mpg's. Driving on 2 lane 65mpg hwy's I've gotten 43mpg. Hybrids only do well in city driving. MIxed driving tends to be around 26-28mpg, except on California gas.
