I have owned a Deluxe Tinker for 16 years. I bought it because the pliers were such a nice addition to the regular tools. The pliers aren’t big and heavy like those found on multi-tools built around pliers, but they do a nice job when you need pulling power or holding power greater than your fingers can provide. The pliers on mine work as well now as they did when they were new. This knife is also known as the Victorinox Swiss Army Multi-Tool, Tinker Pocket Knife , Red, 91mm.
@@luchernou627 Sorry to say mate but sakwiki begs to differ, hence the photo of ''Deluxe Tinker from the early '90s (No hook)'' in the Deluxe Tinker entry.
The best urban edc Victorinox in my opinion. I have a champ and huntsman in my bug out bag but this the most useful balanced with weight and portability. Can't beat it for the money. I do miss having a tiny screwdriver on the corkscrew though 😕
For warranty service, you’d ship the knife to (Victorinox’) service center in Connecticut. You will be without it. I sent a Cybertool 34 back in June for blade and scale replacement, and it’s been gone for almost a month now.
One of my favorite sak's is a deluxe Tinker that I put black G10 scales on. I find the pliers to be incredibly useful, not necessarily as pliers but as super strong tweezers.
After I had to pull a bunch of cactus needles out of my (flat) tires I decided to dedicate a Deluxe Tinker to my bicycle pouch. The pliers are perfect for those and other prickly encounters when you live in the desert!
Same here, but have the Handyman - I did find the pliers were a bit short for the cholla needles, so ended up going with a small Leatherman that is dedicated to my mtn bike which works a lot better and don't get stabbed in the fingers nearly as much now with the longer needles.
I've also recently been sold on the usefulness of those pliers when I picked up a Swisschamp. I just use the opener layer of any victorinox to handle hot oven racks though. You can easily pull out the rack with the can opener, and push it in with the cap lifter. Works especially great when using the toaster oven and I can't be bothered to look for things.
There is a discontinued model called the Master Craftsman, also the "Astronaut" model, its the modern Handyman but with a Phillip on the back. Saw, Scissors, File, Pliers! Swisschamp with no fluff
I was looking at this knife yesterday .I like the idea of the pliers , but actually want the corkscrew . Not to be used as a corkscrew , but my wife and my daughter wear glasses and I think it would be handy to have the eye glasses screwdriver that fits in the corkscrew .. thanks for the video !! Take care brother
I have had a super tinker for a number of years. It's a very nice tool and has had a lot of use. But honestly I find myself reaching for my Leatherman (sidekick) more often simply because its pliers are almost full size and more robust.
If you need to open a wine bottle and you only have a Deluxe Tinker, you can use the Phillips to push the cork down into the bottle and pour the wine past it. But you can't turn a Phillips screwhead with a corkscrew...
@@joaoaraujo9629 Indeed you can - if you have a screw and a fork to hand. If I'm in the kind of setting where I have access to a screw and a fork, I'll probably have access to several corkscrews too!
The slimmest Vic with a pair of pliers is the Mechanic. It's basically a Tinker with a pair of pliers, but I don't know if it's available anymore... The pliers are incredibly useful especially when traveling, away from home and your main set of tools, etc. P.S. I just ordered two of these, just to have a backup... :)
I've carried the deluxe Tinkerer exclusively for the past thirty years. I won't go anywhere without it. But you mentioned the pen. I simply carry the mini champ on my keyring and it has the pen. So I have my cake and eat it too.
Thanks for the review. I have just ordered a Deluxe Tinker and waiting for shipment. I am expecting this to become my EDC. I also wouldn’t mind having the saw, but I couldn’t see a use for it in a city setting. If I were to go camping then something else would be in my kit.
Hey, so did it arrive yet? And if so, can you tell me how it feels in the hand? Like is it too thick or uncomfortable? Just wondering before i get one myself
Happy Wednesday Mark. I use the Deluxe Tinker as my Home tool kit along with a Motorist The DT is a 4 layer SAK but the plier layer is sort of double width & makes it as wide as a 5 layer SAK & for me too large for comfortable pocket carry & I dislike carrying SAK's in pouches on my belt. True that it doesn't have a saw like the Huntsman which I pocket carry but I have a saw in the Motorist which is my other Home tool kit SAK
I have a 28 going on 29 year old deluxe tinker that doesn't have the hook just the chisel and the awl. Just had to send it in to Victorinox to get the two knife blades replaced, scissor spring, along with the red plastic. Only cost me $7+ to have it shipped and $5 to have it inspected and another $15.
Okay, okay already I have a few Tinkers and Super Tinkers and I carry a Tinker Small almost daily I mean I'm not a SAK enthusiast or anything 😜 I have a drawer full but...😅 I've gone back and forth on the Deluxe Tinker for quite awhile now. Are the pliers any good? Are they useful at all? Should I still scream when I ride the rollar coaster 🤔 But I think I'll pick one up... not because of your video😅 but it looks so 😎 cool in your hand 👌 nice video btw 😉
Hey Mark thanks for making my wallet lighter 😂 I purchased this the other day to ad to my collection of SAKs. Found a decent deal on Amazon and bit the bullet. I've been a fan of the Tinker series for years. Have and carried the Tinker Small, Tinker and Super Tinker, like all of them. There's no substitute for the 91mm scissors ✂️ not Gerber, not Leatherman. The Surge may come close but still if I had to bet money it be on the SAK. So this will be my first SAK with the pliers 🤔 I hope they prove as useful as the scissors or at least close. I usually carry a LM at work and I work as an aircraft mechanic so access to tools there isn't a problem but I was thinking about their use around the house or maybe as super tweezers at work when you're trying to grab a really small object or perhaps soldering something. So we'll see. I'll let you know how it goes. Should arrive in a couple days. Take care thanks for the video 👍
I've just got a Deluxe Tinker and was going through the same journey from the Handyman to the Deluxe Tinker. 😀 I didn't know the liner pieces was aluminum. I thought they were also steel. 😮
The only only great thing about the Deluxe Tinker is the awesome pliers. I always hear comments about people saying that don't need the corkscrew because they don't drink wine, but it is so much more useful as tool than the philips and not mention the stuff you can store in the corkscrew. The Deluxe Climber is the same as this Deluxe Tinker, just with a corkscrew and would in my opinion be a better choice. Better yet would be a modded Explorer with pliers, or a Yeoman Mechanic
If you get a chance, try using the fish scaler to cut shapes in a cardboard box and you will be surprised at how good it is just for that satisfying use.
Terrific review! It prompted me to buy a Deluxe Tinker and I love it! Great compromise and a great value... and still okay for EDC carrying. FYI, Victorinox repair for the US is in Monroe, CT and turnaround times are good, last time I heard....you don't have to send them to Switzerland. Did you switch to the Plus scales?
Just ordered this, hoping it will fill the void left by a leatherman squirt PS4. I would prefer to have another one of those, and do whatever fabrication I need to put victorinox scissors into it, but they arent sold anymore so no can do. This seems really nice but I dont like the drop point blade and a bit worried i'll feel its too big and bulky
The Deluxe Tinker appears to be almost the identical width of a Ranger, which actually is a 5 layer knife. I don’t have the Deluxe Tinker but I do have a Ranger and a Huntsman and they compare identically to how you show the Deluxe Tinker and Huntsman.
Do a DIY on it and add titanium liners to it, will take work but it'll be worth it. I'm looking for titanium liners and scales RN for my deluxe tinker. Thanks for the video
Come on. Nobody uses the corkscrew for opening bottles of wine. It has dozens of other uses. I use the pliers more than any other tool other than the cap lifter/screwdriver. I have a Deluxe Tinker and a Super Tinker. I also have the Craftsman-which is an amazing SAK and I’m sorry they discontinued it. I EDC a Swiss Champ. That said, you can’t go wrong with the Deluxe Tinker.
I really love the tinker series from victorinox. I much prefer the phillips to the corkscrew. I need to add the super to my collection. But the deluxe is a great carry with alot of capabilities. Great review 👍
mechanic is a tinker with pliers. discontinued as well but they are out there. also i like the tinker versions because the the cork screw is not comfortable in the hand. wine is gross ha
Use the reamer to split tape on cardboard boxes. Save the blades from tape glue! I find that I don’t even have to clean the reamer tip. It just doesn’t seem to get gummy like the blades do when splitting tape.
the pliers are a top… four? SAK tool for me, after the knife, scissors, and bottle opener. …but also, I really don’t like the perpendicular phillips head screwdriver on the Tinkers, and prefer the in-line driver present on a few models, and I do like the little micro screwdriver that goes in the corkscrew… so I really would like the pliers on a wider range of knives. I think the closet I can get to my desired toolset is the CyberTool M 🤔
I know this is an older video. I'm just getting into collecting a few SAK. I've had my Deluxe Tinker for quite some time. I guess it's the luck of the draw but mine did not come with the scale for the straight pin. It was purchased new from Victorinox. Hmmm.
Thank you so much for the comment! Your tinker is a little bit older. The older Victorinox Knives did not have a hole in the scale for the straight pin. Not a problem if you were to replace the scales you would have a hole within the scale for a straight pin. Thank you again for the comment I hope I was able to help!
@@-xirx- Find the cheapest SAK you can buy that has a corkscrew, a Waiter for example. Remove the scales and use a Dremel tool or file to remove the head of the central rivet, push it through just far enough to remove the corkscrew. Do the same with the Deluxe Tinker but remove the screwdriver and swap. The hardest part is finding thin brass rod of the correct diameter because Victorinox don't use a standard diameter but it's out there. Cut a length slightly oversize and use it to push the rivet/pin through, Being soft brass, it's easy to form the rivet head easily and once one side is done, trim the pin to length and form the rivet on the other side. It's a lot easier than you think and if you warm the knife in hot water before you remove then they fit back perfectly. Another mod on the Deluxe Tinker is to remove the scissors, this gives you a knife called the Mechanic that's no longer available. Change to a corkscrew and that's probably unique. Removing a layer means you can reuse the pins.
Enjoyed the video. I think the smaller model with the pliers was called the Mechanic? Have you ever considered the Cybertool M as an alternative to the Deluxe Tinker? It's expensive and thicker, but if the Phillips is really important, that's the best Phillips from Victorinox by a mile (plus a bunch of other bits). BTW, I'm planning on trying out the new Leatherman Bond coupled with the Huntsman as an EDC, as soon as I buy the Bond. And when I don't need the saw, I could slim down to the Compact plus the Bond. Well, anyway, that's the EDC of the near future that I'm considering. The search for the perfect EDC will never end. lol
I just looked at the current pricing on the Cybertool M and it's $100, which I'd balk at. I agree with you that one of the great things about most SAKs is the value (and it liberates you from worrying about damaging it).
I like the idea of Bond plus Huntsman/Fieldmaster as it gives you scissors and saw, furthermore imo those 2 tools are better on SAKs than on most Leathermans.
@@marcooscatigna916 would definitely go with the Swiss champ. It’s just not worth it to have those other tools which you might use only once during the month where is on the Swiss champ I use almost every single tool on it.
@@markcoffman494 thanks for your reply, i arleady got a victorinox huntsman but is too old and i use that multitool for everything, i was thinking to buy it again it’s been an awesome multitool, but over the years i also heard about the victorinox deluxe tinker, my best friend still carry one of those since 2012, ( i think we was still going to the highschool in 2012 hahaha, ) i might buy the deluxe tinker to my girlfriend, but here is the real issue, i need one complete victorinox for little works around the house, me and my girlfriend will soon move on in a new house for the first time in our lives, and i want to be prepared for everything and every little works, you know, from headlamps to fix the doors, the table and all the others stuff like that, and i have to say that the swisschamp will be good even for my job, i work as a firefighter, and in patrool i use a leatherman raptor scissor and a leatherman rebar wich is really awesome, but i actually need something smaller and for little tasks, it will be so nice and it will make me save so much time, so i think to buy a victorinox but i was undecided on the model, i see a lot of video of people talking very well of the cybertool S M or L version, but i mean, compared to the swisschamp is less functional in my opinion, really, thanks again for your reply i will go for the swisschamp, have a good day, or night, I’m in Italy and here is 11.15 pm, bye!!
Looking to add the Deluxe Tinker to my kit. But i have to question those that carry it..even questioning myself Why not carry the Spirit X multi-tool instead??
The main reason they use aluminum liners is because of the weight. I have an old four layer Victorinox knife with nickel silver liners and it is significantly heavier. I am not sure why at home you would not use a actual screwdriver. and save wear on your multi tool knife which is more expensive.
Probably because I’m lazy and don’t want to go to the garage and search for a screwdriver. Most of the screws I am putting in my house do not require a ton of torque. So I don’t think I’m really sacrificing this tool in anyway. I agree I have seen a few of the older Victorinox Knives with nickel silver and brass liners and they are significantly heavier but I would probably just prefer to have stainless steel liners.
@@markcoffman494 Boker Tech tools have steel liners, I think victorinox is marketing mostly to the outdoor crowd who are weight conscious. Aluminum liners may also allow Victorinox to offer a better price point.
Алюминиевые вкладыши имеют как бы смазывающий эффект, если они были бы стальными через некоторое время нож перестал бы открываться или был бы большой люфи
I thought about the deluxe before I bought the Super. but I couldn't see the usefulness of the pliers. They also add another layer to the tool.Three layers is as thick as I'm willing to carry every day.
I like SAK, but every time (!) that I tried to use the Philips screwdriver - regardless how I tried to hold the knife - it flipped over on my fingers. I will buy another SAK soon (Huntsman probably) but never one with this Philips screwdriver. ;)
I disagree. The corkscrew is important to me and the only ones I have in the house are the ones on my Victorinox and Wenger knives. I pop a wine bottle every third or fourth week and it's fun to do that with Swiss Army Knives.
What do you use the parcel hook for? Never found much use for one - even tried carrying a parcel with it once and it didn't even work well for that. Seen Felix' video but not convinced - particularly if you have a knife with the pliers too...
I just bought one today. I have to get used to the plastic scales, I’m an alox guy. I think Victorinox is missing the boat. If they gave us the option of stainless liners we’d pay more money for the knife. I can’t stand the aluminum liners.
I was so confused why the angler didnt have pliers...I opted for this one instead. There shoud be a true outdoorsman one with a saw, knife, pliers, can opener, saw, fish scaler in one.
Do not use the pliers as a wrench, on any small multi tool. Not designed to be torqued hard and once you screw the spring up, it's useless from that point. Don't ask me how I know this.
Bro..., no offense..., it's a great review of the Deluxe Tinker itself, but FFS do your homework when ever you do a review video about all the models and it's names/characteristics you mention on the video..., because you got most of other names wrong and the works more as disinformation than information, and makes you come across as not knowledgeable enough about the different products and unprepared to make a credible review. Don't take it as a negative critic, but as a constructive comment.
@@markcoffman494 No thanks, i have no interest in making youtube videos. But like i said, i meant it as a constructive comment. Nevertheless when you put up a video you have to be prepared to handle critique as well as praise 😉
@@markcoffman494 Thanks for the video bro. I've watched it before. Very good research. However he didn't used tha same actual Small Tinker unit in all those Ep's. On the Black Corsage, Tough Boys, and some other Ep's it had either the tab with the ring, or just the tab with the key ring removed. The list of SAK's at Macgyver online is not 100% accurate to what was used, by far. The list we have at the Swiss Army Knights Forum it more accurate, but still have incorrections and it's still incomplete. Just from memory the models used where: From Victorinox: 74mm -Executive 84mm - Small Tinker (with and without key ring) - Tourist - Sportsman - Recruit Economy - Golfer Original - Salesman (Small Super Tinker) 91mm - Standard (with and without key ring) - Spartan (with and without key ring) - Hardwood Spartan - Tinker - Compact - Super Tinker - Climber - Camper (with and without "Camping" scales) - Hiker (on the Atlantis movie) - Fisherman - Huntsman - Mountaineer - Cheap Chinese 5 layer knock-off SAK in the last Ep. 111mm - Picnicker - Adventurer From Wenger: - Handyman - Pocketmate - Commander - Classic 11 There maybe a couple more i don't remember at the moment. On a few Ep's is impossible to ID it On-set they may use sometimes 3 (even 4) different models on the same Ep., for different shots, or even different angles of the same shot
This just makes me think is there a perfect Swiss army knife,Of course. Is it portable and a fair edc probably not its about finding the compromise that you need or buy them all. I just own a small classic. I am allways thinking what bigger one I should get.
The idea is to find the smallest one that suits most your needs. I carry a climber when I'm in the city and a Huntsman for when I'm outdoors. I have a very heavy & bulky Swiss Champ that stays at home in a drawer for around the house tasks.

If this knife only had the corkscrew and minidriver, it would be my perfect SAK!
You can easily customise it.
@@byteme9718 "easily" you say?
@@byteme9718 thank you! 👍
Mark I want the handyman!!!!!!
Maybe I could send you mine😅👍
The corkscrew is good for untying knots
hey Mark, Victorinox has a factory and warehouse here in USA. In Connecticut.. a couple of towns away from me
Very very cool!
@@markcoffman494 Yes, I believe the facility is in Monroe, CT. .
I want a delux tinker next .i have a tinker an i do like it.but i still wan a bigger one
Have a version of this with can key philips no parcel hook no crimper pliers it's a great edc knife but is beaten by a leatherman juice s2 though ?
@@Pinki2019 That’s definitely too much money for me, but I am excited to see what you think of the bond. A lot of people are giving it a few turnovers
I like the idea of Bond plus Huntsman/Fieldmaster as it gives you scissors and saw, furthermore imo those 2 tools are better on SAKs than on most Leathermans.
Pin's good for SIM trays 😉
Cybertool large or medium worth it compared to the swisschamp?
But i have to question those that carry it..even questioning myself
Why not carry the Spirit X multi-tool instead??
Size and cost.
@@byteme9718
I went ahead and bought it! 😂
@@zacharybonner9188 You won't regret it.
They need to make the deluxe tinker, but ditch the opener layer and swap the small blade for combo tool.
Check out Fit to Survive. He mods SAKs to have whatever tool you want.
The 3 layer with the pliers was the Mechanic.
I have done a review on that one also
@@markcoffman494 ahh. Yes. And it appears I have seen it and commented on it.
The main reason they use aluminum liners is because of the weight. I have an old
four layer Victorinox knife with nickel silver liners and it is significantly heavier.
I am not sure why at home you would not use a actual screwdriver. and save wear
on your multi tool knife which is more expensive.
@@markcoffman494 Boker Tech tools have steel liners, I think victorinox
is marketing mostly to the outdoor crowd who are weight conscious.
The pliers are the best tweezers you can buy.
I like SAK, but every time (!) that I tried to use the Philips screwdriver - regardless how I tried to hold the knife - it flipped over on my fingers.
I will buy another SAK soon (Huntsman probably) but never one with this Philips screwdriver. ;)
Take a look at the explorer!
how does it feel carrying in a pocket? is it comfortable for EDC?
No problem. I am also able to carry it in my Queen Pocket.
I disagree. The corkscrew is important to me and the only ones I have in the house are the ones on my Victorinox and Wenger knives. I pop a wine bottle every third or fourth week and it's fun to do that with Swiss Army Knives.
Man I wish this version were in ALOX sides.
What do you use the parcel hook for? Never found much use for one - even tried carrying a parcel with it once and it didn't even work well for that. Seen Felix' video but not convinced - particularly if you have a knife with the pliers too...
plenty of uses youtube it
Mostly to help you to pull things that you can't get a good grip on
Opening caned tins with the pull rings if they're awkwardly small or you just clipped your nails
@@auberginesplash I always just lever them up with the can opener or bottle opener flathead if I need to...
I just bought one today. I have to get used to the plastic scales, I’m an alox guy. I think Victorinox is missing the boat. If they gave us the option of stainless liners we’d pay more money for the knife. I can’t stand the aluminum liners.
Does the pen 🖊️ fit inside the toothpick hole on this model? Can it be mod to fit the pen?
You need plus scales for the pen. I put them on every SAK, because they only cost 2.50 € in my country.
You need to find a Special Mechanic. Just pliers, blade, cap lifter and Phillips driver.
Been looking!
I was so confused why the angler didnt have pliers...I opted for this one instead. There shoud be a true outdoorsman one with a saw, knife, pliers, can opener, saw, fish scaler in one.
The victorinox angler has all the tools you mention. The victorinox fisherman substitutes scissors for the pliers.
I'm going to be nauty and remove the can opener/bottle opener to make it slimmer
Do not use the pliers as a wrench, on any small multi tool. Not designed to be torqued hard and once you screw the spring up, it's useless from that point. Don't ask me how I know this.
Yes, I messed up one trying to use it as wrench too...
So, don't put Abom torque on the screwdriver. Got it. 😉
LA TENGO 26 AÑOS Y ESTA COMO NUEVA
Remove small blade and can opener. Use combined tool with large blade. 1 less layer, 1 perfect knife. Does not exist though 😢
Nice watch. Stop chewing your fingernails.
Thanks for the advice
Stop the music
I will, but only for for you, since you asked só kindly.

Thanks for this comment. Maybe you should get on TH-cam and make your own video.
@@markcoffman494 No thanks, i have no interest in making youtube videos. But like i said, i meant it as a constructive comment. Nevertheless when you put up a video you have to be prepared to handle critique as well as praise 😉
@@conan5885 watch this video. There’s definitely plenty of research done in it. th-cam.com/video/qKY3abcMggI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MOg8u_oU7nz_xXUc
@@markcoffman494 Thanks for the video bro. I've watched it before. Very good research. However he didn't used tha same actual Small Tinker unit in all those Ep's. The one from the pilot up till Deathlock was one with no key ring tab and toothpick and tweezers missing.
Just from memory the models used where:
From Victorinox:
74mm
-Executive
84mm
- Small Tinker (with and without key ring)
- Tourist
- Sportsman
- Recruit Economy
- Golfer Original
- Salesman (Small Super Tinker)
91mm
- Standard (with and without key ring)
- Spartan (with and without key ring)
- Hardwood Spartan
- Tinker
- Compact
- Super Tinker
- Climber
- Camper (with and without "Camping" scales)
- Hiker (on the Atlantis movie)
- Fisherman
- Huntsman
- Mountaineer
- Cheap Chinese 5 layer knock-off SAK in the last Ep.
111mm
- Picnicker
- Adventurer
From Wenger:
- Handyman
- Pocketmate
- Commander
- Classic 11
There maybe a couple more i don't remember at the moment.
On a few Ep's is impossible to ID it
On-set they may use sometimes 3 (even 4) different models on the same Ep., for different shots, or even different angles of the same shot
