  • A knife that I carried off and on for a couple of years, the Super Tinker offers a lot of functionality for it's size and weight. Being a three layer knife, it is also very pocket friendly.

    I discovered Victorinox knives several decades ago when a friend opened an 'airgun and knife' shop in Lake Charles. Tried a few models before settling on the Super Tinker. It rides vertically beside my wallet in the left rear jeans pocket. It has easily and often used tools that have 'rescued' me many times. Also carry the tiny Classic model in a front pocket.

    Over the last 40+ years, if my crotch has been covered I've carried a 91 mm SAK, mainly a Tinker. I bought a Super Tinker several years ago. To me they're inter changeable. I like the scissors, but I can live without them. Last weekend I was carrying a Surge and a Super Tinker when I was faced with a rusty, embedded Phillips head screw in a piece of oak that I had to remove. The 2D Phillips driver on the Surge couldn't handle it, but the 3D on the ST took care of it in short order. The only ways you're going to get my Tinkers are if I give it to you (which I've done) or you pry them out of my cold, dead hands.

    I got this one,it's also one of my favorites. I put a pair of custom scales on it that are the plus variant, so I have the pen. On the other side, they are made from copper (swissbianco), so it's heavier. There are plus scales made from plastic that are OEM and you can just replace on the spot.
    Love the channel, keep up the good work.

    I read somewhere that that hook is rated for 200 lbs.
    I use it. We now get cloth bags at stores to carry groceries, and that can get heavy. The handles of these bags are rather thin; it feels sharp and like it would cut into our hands when used to carry said heavy bags long distances to the car. This hook really, really comes in handy at that time to carry these bags.

    Thanks for the video Ben. I've carried a Super Tinker for many years and much the same it compliments whatever multitool I have. You were spot on as far as the tools. Love Vic scissors, the drivers and the blades. I personally like the little pen blade and use it in lui of the main blade for opening taped packaging, etc. I have a fair little collection of SAKs but this is one of my favorites to go with my Leathermans. So much so that I just ordered the Tinker small, the 84 mm. I want to give it a go. Anyway enjoy your videos look forward to the next one.

    Hi Ben, it is so refreshing - and incredibly helpful - to get good reviews from a “working man’s” perspective! In this video you mentioned that you carried this model for a year and a half, but have now rotated to others. I would be interested to know what you are now carrying in lieu of the Super Tinker (in addition to your beloved Surge). Many thanks for your professional reviews!

    I damaged the scales on mine, with super glue. So I upgraded to the 'plus' scales in black, and ordered the pen with it, and also got a little sharpener that attaches to the lanyard ring, and a leather belt pouch which has a slot for the sharpener. Did I go overboard? The Super Tinker has been my favorite SAK ever owned.

    The Super Tinker is an amazing model. It's the same as the Climber but it replaces the corkscrew for the Phillips screwdriver. The corkscrew versus the Phillips screwdriver is subject of heated debate, so Victorinox makes a model for everyone's taste. I like the three (or even four) layers to carry in the pocket but if necessary, I've even carried the Swiss Champ too. If I go outdoors, I'd carry in a sheath a 111mm (Trekker/Trailmaster), Work Champ or one of my 91mm Swiss Champs. Thank you for the great review. One can't go wrong with Victorinox.

    It's easy to buy plus scales separately on the Internet, if you really would like to add a pen to your Super Tinker. There are awesome colors to choose from as well. Those scissors are the best on the market and the spring really is durable, you shouldn't have a problem with it. If you do, however, it's very easy and cheap to order them online as well.

    I know most people dislike the backside phillips, but I've bent a couple of can openers pretty easily trying to get a tough phillips out. I went back to the same screws with a backside phillips equipped sak as an experiment, and broke the screw loose pretty easily. The in-line phillips is even better of course.

  • @Sam_T2000
    @Sam_T2000 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    more SAKs need the pliers, they’re one of the most used tools on my SwissChamp 👌
    I’d also appreciate a small file, rather than the “pen knife,” but perhaps one with teeth? and then the diamond file on the back of the hook, like the Compact?
    …and I’d also like the in-line phillips head driver and LED light, and the package opener from the Companion, rather than the can opener.
    …and I prefer the awls from the ALOX models, rather than the standard ones… and I wish the knife blade was on the other side, with the key ring (and I guess scale tools?) swapped as well.
    …I think that’s all, but that might be my perfect EDC SAK. I have used the wood saw on occasion, but in those scenarios I’d probably rather have something larger 🤷🏻‍♂️

    My most used household multi tool is my tinker. It sits neatly in my pen holder for quick access (shoutout to Walden Woodworkers). I use the phillips to change batteries in kid toys, and I use the little blade to open packages. There's a fair bit of sticky residue on that little blade that I let accumulate before cleaning it off from time to time. This keeps my main blade sharp, but more importantly clean of sticky adhesive residue. So I can be out and about with this knife and use the main blade to slice the dirty bit off a dropped apple, for example. Having said that, I would take the nail cleaner/file over the little blade if I was asked. I've cleaned my nails with knives before, and judging by those mitts you probably have too, but it's not so ideal.

    I agree with not wanting to keep a knife in the same pocket with keys. It's one thing if it gets scratched and worn from actual use, but really irritating when they get scratched and gouged prematurely. It's a totally different kind of damage. Especially true if it is a nice knife. lol I've even gone so far as to get a key organizer that holds my keys kind of like a Swiss Army knife, with my keys folding out from both ends. Keeps everything from rattling around and splaying out, and they also stay at the bottom of my pocket away from the knife clipped to the top when I sit down.
    Edit: Oh yeah! I also wanted to add that I like the addition of a secondary pen knife blade. I like the option of having something to strip cables and scrape with that isn't my main blade. That's also why I like a nice sharp awl too. It can scrape and dig wires out of punch down blocks without chipping off like a knife tip. The back of a properly made saw blade works as a scraper as well, and can even be used to strip small solid core wire like what is used in telecom/networking wiring.

      It's like you were reading my mind. I understand about the pen blade too. I just prefer the nail cleaner/file personally.

    I got one of these in a bundle off of eBay with a Ranger (which I wanted!). My friend has never owned a SAKnife, and delivers for GrubHub, so since he doesn't have spending money and I don't want him to be unarmed delivering food to strangers in Cleveland, he will be getting the STinker from me for free. :) This one is ALMOST small/light enough to be on a keychain.

    You can get "plus" scales, pin & pen, (blue only,) pretty cheap, maybe $15.
    I put them on the SAK that lives in my jacket.

      I have been interested in trying the swissbianco scales.

    • @GabeMacDonnell
      @GabeMacDonnell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got a plain set of titanium scales- they're beautifully made "plus" scales. Mine needed slight fitting to satisfy me, but w/o fitting they fit as well as OEM celluloid scales.
      Adds a little bit of weight, but not too bad. And you could tap them for a pocket clip.

      TX Tool Crib i love the Alox knives, and the slim Cadet. But i hate giving up the tweezers, and the pen, pick and pin are useful, too.

    Love this tool, my edc is the tinker Deluxe it has the perfect tool load out for my needs :)
    I honestly think it could be improved by taking away one layer by taking away the bottle and can opener and taking away the small blade and replacing it with the combo tool then it would be perfect :) great video!
