Sony ZV E1...Slog 3 not as easy as you think!

  • I'm not sure if the ZV E1 is a good camera for beginners. Shooting in Slog 3 can be a challenge, and if you're not careful it can turn into complete grainy garbage footage. Throwing the ZV E1 into a AUTO mode and shooting in SLOG 3 could lead to disappointment.

    If you're going to shoot in SLog3, it's best to stick to the 2 Base ISO's. 680 for well lit and 12800 for low light to dark. It doesn't get simpler than that. Adjust everything else to expose properly (aperture/shutter/ND filter). The FX30 uses the same principle of getting the best out of the Slog3 by sticking to its 2 ISO's (800 and 2500). The best Picture Profile for beginners is S Cinetone IMO.

    You are correct, whilst TH-camrs and experts may say use Slog 3 it looks awful and grainy unless you are one of the base ISO, spend ages setting it up, and use ND filters outside.
    For the rest of us I am just using S Cinetone on my ZVE1 and it looks fantastic (picture profile 11 no effort needed!).
    That also has a much more sensible (for most) second base ISO but you will lose some quality in yen very dark environments compared to a properly set up 12800 Slog 3.

    yep shoot in either 640 or 12800 and use a ND or VND to get the right exposure

    Thanks for the heads up. I'm not sure if a beginner would use slog 3 unless they were wanting to get into color grading. There are other options for them that will look better than the competition in similar lighting conditions straight out of camera.

    Have you tried LOG shooting mode with flexible ISO instead of a Slog3 picture profile? It’s way more intuitive.

    I’ve preordered and I am a Sony A7S iii user. Is the ZV E1 beginner, for me, not sure it matters. People will buy what they wanna buy. Some people will spend a bit more to have a quality camera. SLOG … I’ve never shot with it. However, I have shot a ton of videos and have driven over 14 million views (Brian G Johnson TV). When I started with the A7S iii … I had about two years experience. However, I stuck with no picture profile for a while and that was ok. About a year ago, I started filming in SCinetone and I like that profile. One of the features I am looking forward to with the ZVE1 is that I can preview SLOG with a lut. That will make life a bit easier … shooting great videos / photos takes a lot of time and practice. There are no short cuts …. but, cameras are becoming more powerful and the ZV E1 looks great. It’s gonna over heat on me … I am sure. But, I will make it work and I have a ton of cameras. Will be interesting to see how popular the camera becomes …. cheers … good luck on your decision to keep the ZV or not.

      Previewing with a LUT is a game changer for sure. At this point I'm keeping my pre-order and I'm going to test the ZVE1 out as much as I can and make a decision at that point.

    It sounds like the 1 thing you are missing - If you are shooting in 12,800 and you need "4,000 iso" to maintain the 180 shutter rule, you need to use NDs. But yes, this takes more work, and some thought. But like you mentioned, you might just bring the f/stop down as well if you don't need the bokeh. Plus proper exposing for the "low light" - goes along way getting less noisy footage.

    • @hasenmyer
      @hasenmyer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Sony invited top level TH-cam talent to showcase this camera..some may be disappointed to learn that shooting in the standard profile won't yield the same results as was shown by the initial launch videos. Same with my insta 360 one x2. My video looks like junk, while the initial creators looked great, little did I know what length they were going to get good looking footage. I mean who shoots manual mode/log profile with an action cam and grades the footage?

    • @truthseeker6804
      @truthseeker6804 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you use ndfilter in low light to keep your iso at 12800, your image quality would be worse than the camera that doesnt use ndfilter and can stays at 3200 iso.

    Yeah its crazy, after all the Footage looks super grainy and noisy as soon as there is not enough light, no matter what you set the camera at. My experience without any hassle is just to leave it in intelligent auto with PP11 S Cinetone Profile. All in all the hype and marketing is much bigger than what the camera actually delivers.
