Sony ZV-E1 Overheating Tests

  • The Sony ZV-E1 has sparked quite a conversation over the past week since its release. A lot of good points but also a lot talking about the negatives including the overheating issues.
    While a lot of people are talking about it have not even had the camera in their hand, there is a small overheating issue.
    If the camera is used how Sony designed it, the camera will not overheat. This camera was NOT designed to be constantly recording but only used in burst recording. Even with professional filming this camera is more than sufficient to do so.
    Please take not of certain situations and just be aware of the limitations you may encounter.
    Do not forget Sony have multiple other cameras to choose from if you are wanting longer record times and professional work.

    Don't forget the other cameras you have access to if you need longer record times, FX3, FX30, A7SIII, FX6 etc. Also don't get angry at me. I am just reporting my findings, I don't own the brand Sony. You can take or leave my findings and results :)
    Sony are always watching, hence why I make such videos to bring certain things to attention.

      Nah, this is the best sensor you could possibly get for that amount of money. The dynamic range, low light performance, framerates and codecs for that price? You wont find better. If you are making music videos, commercials or something like that it is an absolute nobrainer.

    Jason, love these practical tests. Makes me wonder also how much throwing on a fan (know of one made for the 6500) with a thermal pad would help as well. Do you know if using clear image zoom you can get away with using APS-C lenses without the crop/vignetting? That'd be a uniquely appealing feature, especially with the bump of dual ISO.

      @@HANKBRAVO81 Yeah It's a non-issue for me personally. The longest I shoot is 10 min tops. My biggest concern is how the camera will perform with my stop-and-go style of shooting. Like, will it still overheat if I shoot for three minutes, then two, then another 5 minutes. Also, is 120p going to be possible? I might cancel my order and wait and see TBH.

    • @HANKBRAVO81
      @HANKBRAVO81 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@noisackda2564 yeah that’s true. It’s more about heat building up in the body isn’t it? But, tbh, I can’t see it being an issue for 90% of its target audience. Start/stop recording bursts. Sony will be aware of the heat build up and will likely release 4K 120 along with revised heat management all round. Otherwise, it will be a complete fail. I’m inclined to wait and hold my store credit but longer I wait, the longer the pre-order list gets. Hmmmm. I’m in two minds. I can pick up an A7IV right now for less money.

      @@JasonMorrisphotocinema unfortunately this is not just a constant recording issue. In such a heat camera internal temps are going to build up and sooner or later you will hit the wall even with bursts. Say if you are travelling and and doing dynamic shots say 20-30 sec each after a few hours you might be unable to do another 1 min take because camera is already hot and not dissipated enough heat due to ambient temperature.

One of the reasons why someone would prefer this camera over A7M4 or A7R5 could be its 60fps without a crop or 120 fps. This is at 4k 25- at 4k 60 you’ll probably get 5 mins before you have a hot mess. Many people want to record at 4k 60 so you have the option to slow it later, it’s great to always have the option. On my LUMIX G9 I filmed everything at 60, and often decided to slow footage when I haden’t intended to. Do some 60 tests, I bet it doesn’t last hardly any time.

    As a filmmaker, overheating is rarely a concern. I don't shoot clips that are several minutes long. While the ZV-E1 is being promoted as a "vlogging" camera, it can also serve as a filmmaking camera given the sensor that it comes with. Let's be honest, how many vloggers - who this camera is geared towards - shoot clips that are more than 10+ minutes long? Look at Casey Neistat. One of the world renowned vloggers. His videos are fast paced with clips mostly lasting a few seconds.
    People like to complain. I've heard cries about overheating on almost every camera released in the past 5 years. In the end, I don't experience overheating in these same cameras. Then cries of, "Yea, but it overheats in hot weather! Waaaaaa!" Yea, I would think most cameras would have issues with filming in hot environments unless they come with built in fans or another cooling system.
    Bottom line. If you think the ZV-E1 will overheat too much - even though you don't even have the camera in your hand - then don't buy the bloody camera. Simple.

    What about these potential solutions?
    1. When you hit record, wrap the camera in a small, thick WHITE BLANKET(wool or similar) acting as insulation to block the sunlight from heating up the camera, leave blanket open on bottom for air flow...
    Wool is great because it is breathable but also insulates.
    ALSO - If the camera is on a tripod, use an small UMBRELLA or object to block the sun. The solution to direct sunlight is BLOCKING the effects of direct sunlight, which is stronger than air temperature alone.
    2. Open the LCD screen, put a small 1.5" USB fan on the back of the camera, to cool and circulate the air. Similar to what camera fans do.
    3. Carry a small cooler with DRY ICE or sealed ice cubes, cut a hole for the lens to poke out. Don't use too much ice where it freezes of course, just a little. This idea is less practical, but it is an idea.
    4. Build a shoebox sized insulated box, cut a hole for the lens, hit record and the light will be blocked from hitting the camera. Put a fan at the bottom to remove heat. Have a second hole for air to enter of course.
    So basically, it is a compact camera when needed, which is great, but maybe there are custom solutions for long recording situations

      The main time one would do a long recording is in specific situations where they don't want the recording to stop unexpectedly.

    • @ScalzoPhoto
      @ScalzoPhoto ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonMorrisphotocinema Of course, but that defeats the purpose of a compact camera that fits in your pocket. 95% of the time it is great as is, I was just thinking of the few times when someone might want an uncut long recording.
      If someone has $2,100 in the bank to throw at a camera, they most likely have $ for the fx3. That is a LUXURY PURCHASE for many people
      People are missing the point of a COMPACT camera which is ment to go with you everywhere, especially when traveling. Perhaps the Fx3 is small enough, maybe that might be considered a compact camera in a way. Not sure if it can fit in a person's jacket pocket.

    • @Giovanni-Giorgio
      @Giovanni-Giorgio ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScalzoPhoto I get the idea of pocket sized cameras. But does it fit your pocket in reality. Sure the lenses are smaller for cameras like zv-e10. But mosr full-frame lenses tend to be a bit bigger (Except pancake prime lenses). I tried the zv-e10 but only with the tiny kitlens it fitted my jacket pocket. I carry a compact shoulder bag just big enough for the my a7iv + 24-70. I have the camera out just a bit slower than when it would be in my pocket. The a7iv doesn't feel that much bigger and i don't need a small cage for better grip. But that's personal. Wrapping the zv-e10 with materials doesn't make it portable and easy to handle. Taking a blanket or box with dry ice isn't either in my opinion. Maybe the usb fan works but it drains battery if the usb-c port on the camera body supports it, not sure. When using a rig with external battery it might work if you need to record longer walking around. Most of the time it sits on a tripod with longer record times i agree. But a tripod doesn't fit a pocket and you need that bag or strap. I might still buy a zv-e1 for b-roll.

      and about that fx3 sensor, who films at 12,800 anyways? more usable would have been 3,200 or 4,000 like in a7iv or s5. afaik, fx3 is outperformed by those cameras at values under 12,800. what, are vloggers filming at night mainly?
      youtubers are pushing this too hard. let it go, its a failed product..
