I’ve always found Scott Rockenfield’s drumming to be quite challenging. Not flashy, just very precise, nuanced and well thought out. You did awesome and I will learn a lot from this video.
May 17, 1991 -- Rosemont, Illinois -- Rosemont Horizon -- Building Empires tour... best concert I have ever seen by any band... EVER !!! (and my favorite group is Rush !!!) I have never seen a 5-man-group more in the pocket. They played a few songs from the "Empire" album, and "Operation Mindcrime" in its entirety !!! Truly an amazing band, as was your drum performance... well done, Nick !!!
Yeah dude - that one bit aside you totally nailed that ! :) Aw man - that ride / hats 16s thing in the outro with the 3rd guitar over the top is one of my favourite rock moments ever...
Scott is such a genius and you did an awesome job. I still remember where I was the 1st time I heard him splitting 16th notes on the ride n hi-hat.🤯 The snare on 4-E and the chinas and crash on the &-A-1 are the cherry on top. Delicious. P. S. Leaving that booboo in there was nice 😝🤘 🥁
This is one of the hardest Queensryche's tracks to cover and you did a fantastic job. I've studied it for a long time and those fills are not easy to get bang on. Many covers on here do an 'interpretation' so it's good to see someone being faithful to the original.
Thank you! Yes the 80s were great, I was a teenager in those days. So many great bands, Queensrÿche, Iron Maiden, Savatage, Dio, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Rush, etc... Keep rocking!
+asicerik Thanks man! I had a hard time memorizing the transitions, Rockenfield has a very interesting style, only when I sat down to play is when I realized it wasn't as easy as I thought...
Agreed, Rockenfield is a very challenging cover. Excellent job. The "imperfections" (from a good drummer) in a cover I see as giving it your own personality or accent on the original. Outstanding work here.
Thanks again and also for having commented on my Subdivisions cover. I often try to get in the mindset of the original drummer for covers, something it's probably impossible to do.
MrNickDrummer more than any other musical instrument, that has significant carryover. Body language (not talking just flamboyance but mannerisms) has plenty of effect on the musical outcome.
Looks fun to play. It's an amazing song. Scott Rockenfield is a very self styled drummer with some unpredictable combos. He makes it sound powerful, but you make it look easy😁
True! Back then when I've recorded this I had an old camera without stabilization. Thanks for the comment, and I just uploaded one more Queensrÿche cover.
A man or woman who can do this...there's nothing wrong at ALL with not getting it "perfect"...it's the SPIRIT that matters most, and you've got that. Queesnryche, Rush, Metallica and Yes...those artists HAVE to know they'll inspire other musicians. It's just the effort and spirit that makes you kick ass. Damn good cover!
Scott is truly a genius and you did him right. Fine job. Splittin 16th notes on the ride n hats is awesome enuff then he nailed us with 2 china's n a crash. I'll never forget the 1st time I heard it. 🤘😝 🥁
Thank you, I admire Scott's creativity and precision. I have a couple of more QR covers here, Before The Storm is full of little but very interesting details.
I haven't played in years (body falling apart) but this was always one of my favorites to cover. The whole album beginning to end was always a ton of fun. Good work! 🙂
This is an awesome way to play. Considering the Rockenfield style, you brought the song to your own way to feel it. Sounded amazing. Thanks for showing that is possible to have fun and play well.
I thought this was fan-freakin'-tastic. Yeah, there was a little screw up at the end, but it wasn't a big deal, you recovered well, and no one who isn't a drummer would have known the difference. Great stuff!
@MrNickDrummer Absolutely 💯% BULLSEYE!!! And Your Drum's Sound ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! EXPECIALLY YOUR SNARE!!! I've alway's Loved this Band!! I just have a hard time Spelling there name!😅 Plus I loved learning that one part," we're your riding on the ride cymbal and the high-hats,while lifting!! I've only seen Neil Peart do that move!! JUST AN AMAZING JOB!!🤟🤘🤙🤟🤘🤘🤟🤘🤙🤘🤟
Thank you! The snare in this video is a Ludwig Super Sensitive Black Beauty that I still have. The hi-hat lift happened naturally for me and that's what Scott Rockenfield did on the record, it's a fun song to play 👍 You might like Before The Storm I've covered as well 🤘🏻
Good stuff... Lol.. Great....i started with aor melodic rock... Toto being my favorite.... But the last couple of years more melodic/power/prog metal comes in... Great stuff
Your videos are very inspiring to me. I’ve been playing since I was twelve. I’m now 49 and unfortunately have developed severe arthritis in all four of my ball and socket joints. Not drum related, just bad genetics. It has taken an immense toll on my ability to play. My other hobby of precision shooting is also horribly affected by this. I compromise by watching videos of both former passions. Thank you and keep them coming!
Thanks for the kind words, I'll upload more covers as I master them, and I hope your arthritis gets better. Have you tried whole foods plant based lifestyle? Might help a lot. I've gotten rid of my type 2 diabetes and about 50lb with it in about 4 months and my joints are much better as well.
bripro68 yeah I understand I have severe arthritis called ankeylosely spondnitis it sucks mick mars of motley crue has it I've played drums since I was 7 and I'm 47 and can't play like I used to played quads in the marching band now can play shit plus right arm injury brachial plexus nerve to my shoulder I'm tore up from the floor up
Like how you make a mistake and look at the camera and just keep going..most people would edit and fix it,you kept it real, great cover and one of the harder songs to play on drums. The intro and outro are a pain for most people to get right!
Thank you! Small mistakes can happen... and the intro and outro for some reason never have been difficult for me to play. Maybe it's because I used to listen to this song a lot back in the day, idk 👍
@@MrNickDrummer I see a lot of people who can't do the intro/outro right and I cringe. I play drums as well and it's not really complicated. I played with a band on one offs and when I would make mistakes,I'd shake my head and shrug it off. It's all good fun and shows we are only human!
Is that double bass you're using when he sings "Eyes of a Straaanggerrrr?" It sounds difficult. Did that take some work to get down? It's cool as hell.
Thanks! That spot happened because I've played the snare note with my left hand when I should have started with my right hand. It's a small millisecond difference, but it's perceivable.
One small(and I do mean small) error...had you been playing live with a band (or I wasn't a drummer myself for 35+ years) No one would notice! Excellent job, and a very good job getting the mix right! (Compliments on your kit too!) 2 thumbs up!
Hey man... Yes, I had a band when I was in my mid 20s. We almost went pro but tragedy hit so I guess it was not meant to be. Our bass player passed away from a stroke and a few years later our guitar player also passed away from a car crash. After that, we just didn't feel like continuing. But I still enjoy music and playing covers 👍
@@MrNickDrummer Holy crap, that is rough. Wow. It is funny, something in the YT algo kicked into gear and I am getting tons of your videos now which is SWEET!
YT is weird... maybe it has to do with the comments that get posted, who knows. One more Rush tune in the works, updating soon I hope, I'm still stuck at some of Neil's tricks lol
Hey, Nick. Could I get this video WITHOUT the Queensryche track, so we can use you in a multi-location jam (where we each add our parts (with video) from our own studios?

The final drum fill during the ending solos ALWAYS gets me
It's just sooooooooooooo perfect.
Great cover
Love the little flub at 4:52 and you looked at the camera. 😁😁. Been there, done it myself. Keep rocking brother. 🥁🥁🥁
It happens! 😆

Spot on. Time sigs were on point. Great job.

+Nick Lynch Thank you! It's not exactly perfect, but I've tried to keep it as equal as the original recording as I could -- very challenging.
I like your facial expressions!!! Your joy of playing is pretty cool to see!! 🤘🤘
Thanks! I didn't even realize while playing this back then...
Awesome man! I'm 13 and my dad and I love to jam out to queensryche and all the good 80s stuff! Man I wish I lived back in those days!

Rad Planet They were great days
If you keep listening to this songs you are keeping them alive today which is equally important as experiencing it back then.
I really enjoyed it dude! Man I love that song. I have air drummed it a million times, but never actually played it on a kit.

Great job
Really appreciate quality drumming. Don't understand any of it. Brain wiring is different from every other instrument. This is excellent.

Thanks and yes, Wuhan chinas don't seem to sound good in person but the microphones love them!
Nailed it. 👍🏻

Not bad. Under control.
He's sitting here this whole time with his eyes closed and doesn't know he has his drumstick upside down.
Please tell me your not a drummer or that you're kidding! (Because drummers have been using that stick style since the invention of Rock!)
I meant if he didn't know he was sorry misunderstood. And I don't know rock I play jazz l.
I use the left stick backwards because it gives me more power, I'm used to it, many years playing like that...
I play jazz I play traditionally but this part was good by the way and just play anyway your comfortable with!
