  • SpaceX is on the edge of a groundbreaking achievement in space technology with its upcoming Starship Flight 4 launch, scheduled for tomorrow, June 6th. The target launch time is 8 am EDT, but this is subject to change, so you all should stay tuned for updates. This mission marks a crucial step towards achieving reusability and pushing the boundaries of deep-space exploration.
    The Starship and its Super Heavy booster are the world's most powerful rocket, standing at an impressive 400 feet tall. The first stage is powered by 33 Raptor engines, while the Starship upper stage is powered by six Raptors. This launch system is designed to be fully reusable and capable of flying to deep-space destinations. SpaceX's ultimate goal is to establish a human settlement on Mars, and the Starship is the key to making this vision a reality.
    So, Ship 29 is currently stacked atop booster 11, but you know, it will be flying with missing tiles. Do you remember the missing tiles that I mentioned 2 days ago? Yeah, that has not been fixed yet. I think it’s basically to test whether the Ship can achieve reentry with broken or missing tiles.
    The primary objective of Flight 4 is to demonstrate the ability to return and reuse Starship and Super Heavy. The first two flights failed to reach space, while the third flight reached space but broke apart during reentry. Despite these setbacks, SpaceX has persevered, and Flight 4 is expected to be a major success.
    The Starship Flight 4 is expected to last just over one hour, following a similar trajectory to the previous Starship Flight 3 launch on March 14. The flight path does not require a deorbit burn for reentry, prioritizing public safety while still meeting the primary objective of a controlled Starship reentry. The Super Heavy booster is expected to fly for nearly 7 minutes, with a landing burn scheduled for 6 minutes and 43 seconds after liftoff. This will be a crucial moment in the mission, as a successful landing and splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico will demonstrate the reusability of the booster.
    SpaceX has a 120-minute launch window, which means the Starship could lift off anytime between 8 am and 10 am EDT. The company will offer a free live webcast of the launch beginning at approximately 7:30 am EDT.

    SpaceX intentionally removed several tiles to measure the temperature of the Ship's hull during re-entry.

    I don’t think they aren’t installing those missing tiles to test if the ship can survive without them. The likelihood of existing tiles falling off during flight is so high that they will test that even if they don’t want to. Starting with missing tiles just wouldn’t make sense. If they can go a flight with all tiles staying on, then test edge cases. Starting with some off and losing some more wouldn’t prove anything.

    I can't believe they would deliberately go up with tiles missing already. that's as dumb as the first launch with no water deluge system.

      @spacegamer85 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually its cost effective. IFT4 is expendable and SpaceX learns more from failure than success. What they hope to learn is how critical heat shield tile quantity and location among other things. I am not saying SpaceX wants another RUD but they will take all the data and learn from it. Hoping for a double controlled splash down.

      Musk needs to keep the program going and has to show some progress, otherwise the funding might just dry up. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they deliberately let it burn up because they know it’s not ready for a controlled landing. I’m guessing they’re going for a controlled decent keeping starship oriented the right way.

    There's no need to rush it. If they are just getting around to getting the tiles in order, they should wait until they are all there, secure and tested. It doesn't bode well for any kind of re-entry at close to orbital velocity with missing/shaky tiles. The plasma will make quick work of the exposed steel and.. kaboom goes starship, again..

      The chance might be slim but not zero...
      A "standard" Starship could easily take an Alpaca lander to the moon without waiting for HLS... if Alpaca can do the job. Building a moon base will be much easier if HLS brings an electric D11 bulldozer with a cab... clearing/grading a building site should be about the same as here and will require similar tools... The dozer may not be required right away but it _will_ be required at some point.
