  • When Scott Wright at IMS Products called us to show us his Honda 250L Rally bike build, we jumped at the chance to ride this bike. We called up ex-supercross pro David Pingree to put the bike through its paces in the Southern California hills. With less weight and more power, the little Honda turned from mild-mannered to a much more fun trail bike.

    You guys did a great job. These 250 dual sports make fun and reliable little adventure bikes that will take you anywhere and really do well in the dirt compared to larger adventure bikes.

    I just got this bike and I LOVE it. These upgrades I will slowly add and make my bike better as I become better myself. Just bought a new seat from seat concepts, cant wait for it to get here because the stock seat SUCKS. lol

    if only they made the honda rally 350 with about 45+ HP THAT would be the perfect bike for dirt and touring around states! cruise at 75 80 mph and light and flickable enough for techy trails! they indeed would be the perfect bike

      I wish someone would just tell manufacturers that if its not comfortable doing 80 mph, it may as well be a moped in the US. I don't even like to ride that fast, things feel more chill at 65 mph but the flow of traffic and empty back highways makes you go that fast. They always concentrate on making it feel fast, but when it comes to the highway you run out of gear... and me personally, i don't want to pay 10+k for a dual sport when theres plenty of other affordable bikes that can do 90% of what they can for 1/2 the price.

      ha ha, l love that.. 'wots yoar excuse' .. errm, a Job that i can't afford to lose - maybe? Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan.. all thses dream locations would just take too much time. If i left my company for mre than 2 weeks they would realize that they don't really need me back.. 😅

    Good point Alex , but the adventure bike genre is also about touring , long dirt roads that in Australia cross the continent state to state , it can be tedious . What I am explaining is the large capacity bikes 1000 cc etc. will be far more stable and less exhausting over 7 day rides through the outback. I have over 30000 k , staying at rest areas at the side of the road , then occasionally running up through the mountain ranges en route , where these bikes really hold there own . See Macgregor and Borman , Long Way Round . Often 300k between fuel stops . Crossing deserts , wildlife , camels pigs , roos stray cattle and road trains 4 trailers long . It is all a challenge and that is why we ride . Are you in Australia ?

      Full exhaust should save 10 or 12 pounds, plastic tank should be several, aluminum bar should be a couple, fender eliminator should be a couple, and with all the aluminum pegs, levers, etc., I have no problem believing it.

      @@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Those numbers are bloated as well. The best you'll get from an exhaust system is 8 pounds. The rest, you're talking ounces of weight savings, not pounds. A litho battery will save you another 7 though. I think getting to 20 total would be a very hard press.

      Element of Kindness I don't know personally, but every full exhaust I've ever seen has advertised 10-12 pounds weight savings, I doubt they could blatantly lie (of course, automotive intake and exhaust systems advertise ridiculous power gains, so maybe). I can't believe I didn't even think about a lithium battery, that's an absolute given for any bike I own. I saved like 4 pounds (verified) with an aluminum bar on my TW200, and that was with an ATV fat bar, 2" risers, AND Bark Busters (installed all at the same time), though I did also swap out my levers for shorter, presumably lighter ones. I'm not defending these dudes, and have no idea or interest as to whether or not they're exaggerating, but I don't have any reason to not believe 25 pounds.

    It would be very useful to see a dyno graph - before and after, to see what the real change is. And weight it now to see wha the end weight is - not the calculated weight.

    I just got my crf250 a few days ago this bike is a joy to ride even stock this bike is fun , that's all that matters anyway is it fun I bought this bike to ride not re design

      They are great machines. Nobody NEEDS to modify them, but it makes for a more interesting video when you do. Have fun with you new machine.

    I wonder about stiffer springs introducing with no damping adjustment, changing oil viscosity or levels will not keep it from becoming a dangerous pogo stick at speed.

      The suspension was gone through as much as it could be. It worked surprisingly well compared to dead stock actually. But for the money, one needs to keep the CRF250L in perspective.

    I just can’t find any sproket any where even on Zeta where you said you got yours ... im kinda annoyed with this i realy want to put 13/42 on my bike to get more whip off road and on every site they said that crf250l does not fit my crf250 rally what i found realy strange .. if you can send me a link some where it would be appriciated Thanks

      I don't think they do it as a service. It was simply a shop project for marketing purposes.

      Ping is a friend of ours and he is good on camera so he helps us out. Dualsports are getting a lot of guys fired up these days. The IMS tank is a lot lighter than the stock one, stock foot pegs and controls are big pieces of cold rolled steel, the stock seat is really heavy, etc etc.

      The tank itself is lighter, however it contains more fuel, so it's heavier. Also I haven't seen that tank, but I guess it will make checking/changing the spark plug without lifting the tank impossible. Extra volume doesn't come out of the blue. Stock controls are made of steel which allows you to straighten them in the woods. Aluminium controls just break or something else breaks. Install aluminum foot pegs and risk bending the frame. I will choose bending my cold rolled steel footpegs instead all day long.

      Aluminium is far less plastically flexible than steel. Roughly speaking, it either flexes and returns to its original state or breaks. While steel is very hard to break, but easy to bend. There are many reports on internet from people who bent their frames with footpegs on CRF L. We don't know all the details of course, but it's obvious that it's not a hard enduro or a trials bike to throw around at no extra cost.

      40 down initially. That's a lot. I could see the exhaust cutting 8 lbs. I wouldn't see much loss anywhere else.

      Yeah, the vast majority of these get sold into Asia and Europe where the average rider is simply smaller. Pretty much every bike is sent from the factory aimed at the center of the average potential consumer.

      I'm 160 lbs without gear and the bike feels planted in all offroad situations. Yesterday I rode a bumpy gravel road at 55 mph. The bike just sailed over it. You can't just throw in new springs and think you've cheated the physics. To counterbalance a stiffer spring, damping should also be increased. If you don't do it, the bike will feel less stable, which will lead to a jolty ride.

      Maybe in Asia the average rider has lower stature. Not in Europe. If you look around you, the USA's population is built with European backbone too and you can tell those descending from them aren't that short... Not saying there's no short riders in Europe, but not the average, unless you consider about 6' on average a short height.
      Myself and my roots are some of the shortest in Europe and we're still above Asian average.
      By the way not taking your comment as an insult, just wanted to clear a little bit the doubt. Cheers!

      Excellent point. It has since been swapped for a much lighter and more reliable AntiGravity battery.

    Never use an IMS shifter. The stock shifter is ideal because it is soft enough to bend. I have seen IMS shifters break the shift shaft because they are so stiff. That is a very expensive repair.

    The bike is beautiful and maybe the best looking dual sport out there but the amount of money you have to put into it to get performance for a rider over 150 lbs. is a bit much. I notice that your test rider in the video was a lighter rider even after all the mods. Maybe a $3000 suspension would do it I don't know yet.

    Yes all good for short day trips , dirt roads etc , but too physically small to travel highway to your off road adventure start . It will become uncomfortable after 3 hours .

      Get it on a trailer. Problem solved. No serious off-roader will sit hours on a highway. It's super boring and it's a waste of tires and engine.

      I ride mine twice a week from my home to school and back, which is about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour trip each way. It’s not ideal, but it does just fine. Not many other 5k bikes will do that AND take you off-road with reasonable capabilities.

    I've persevered with this bike since it came out. Sold it and bought it back. Most of this vid is BS. I can't stand the bias reviews.

      Especially I like how the rider "felt" the difference in weight, while actually with that panniers and more petrol in a bigger tank it should weight way more. :) Also, I don't believe you can get any more power out of that engine without compromising the low end. With a straight pipe it will scream, but it doesn't mean it will ride quicker of be more fuel efficient. Quite the contrary actually. The advice is to go as stock as possible. Honda did a great job on this bike. Throw some barkbusters in, an aluminium handlebar, some soft luggage and you're ready to go. The rest is for those who have got dollars burn their pockets.

    at almost 350 lb and 24 hp why would anyone buy it, when a DRZ 400 weighs about the same with more hp, or the DR 650 about 364 lbs.and even more hp

      Well, it depends on what kind of upgrades. There is nothing wrong with a set of good enduro tires, an aluminium handlebar, barkbusters and that sort of stuff. But anything more than that is of course pointless.

      Why not buy a ktm 690 / husky 701 that is lighter & more powerful? I’m down with low cc bikes - but the KTM/Husky just seems impossible to beat given it’s basically the same weight or less.

    stock tires confirmed SHIT, I took them on soft-sand (not beach obviously), worthless. Appears you riding a bicycle on ice. Springs and Shocks for off-road a must too, but shocks expensive. Exhaust is shit, yes, you need an FMF or Yoshi. As for the seat, stock seat is fine.

    50 miles to a gallon? ? Should get a lot better than that I riding mine at 50 mph on gravel roads 80.6 mpg

    So...why not get a CRF450L ? Everybody gets these and then does a video about lack of power. Yeah, it’s a 250!!! Wtf did you expect? For what it is, it’s a great bike for the price. No, it’s not the best bike ever, but good luck finding that for 5k.

      Well thats almost 2 years ago now. If memory serves, just the tire change dropped 6 pounds. So there was a lot of weight to drop. And a good chunk was put back on with hard bags etc.

      While I understand your point, it's not entirely accurate or fair. The point of a "Project Bike" is to showcase the limit of what can be done to a bike and what the gains are. From an efficiency standpoint, the more we can include in a single video the better. It's up to you to decide if the CRF250L Rally is the right bike and which parts will actually help your riding style and location. For most people: Bike - $5900, Slip on - $400, Tank - $300, Pegs - $160, EFI Control - $225, Air Filter Kit - $75, Suspension - $400, Total - roughly $7,500. Of course these are rough numbers not accounting for shipping, tax and any additional labor. But it's about the same as a CRF250X before you even fill it with gas. For someone who wants the street legal versatility on surface streets and wants a light duty weekend trail, dirt road, desert exploring bike, this could be perfect. If you want to race the next GNCC, you might want something else. Items like sterring stabilizers and Tubliss kits are great and make the bike better, they are more discretionary. Tires, grips, oil all have to get changed from time to time regardless. Food for thought. Thanks for the comment!

      The bikes are designed and built primarily for the Asian market where more people use bikes as their primary transportation and 250cc is considered a big bike. North America sales is an after thought and the sales are much less.

      You know what would have been more fun is to have installed some used EBay CRF450 suspension parts, ported the head, hotter cams, up the compression. Then load all those boxes and fairings on it and have David P flog it out on a MX track in an actual race.
      Now there’s a video worth watching!

      $160 dollars pegs seriously thats 10400rupees thats 1/8 of the cost of a 250cc motorcycle here. Although i get the concept pushing the manufactured bike to its limit for optimum performance keeping the weight really light and handling easy for any one from a novice to a pro 👍🏻

      If they wanted the weight really light they wouldn't go for that hard cases which make the Rally as wide as a Chevrolet Spark.

    The EJK (electronic jet kit) that “plugs in between the ECU and the bike”😕
    I installed mine between the rear tire rim lock and the left front turn signal mounting bracket. With just a dab of Vegemite on the threads as anti seize. Best money I ever spent!
    It’s nice of them to allow Shane Watts to become the technical advisor to the channel 😂
