FYI: the charge station mounted high on a pole is meant to be activated in-app, and then the plug will automatically drop down for you to reach. It was meant as an anti-theft device. This one has probably been deactivated.

It is a great car. No politics, just fell in love during my test drive, judged car on its merits. Leased a 2014 Base exactly like the one you test drove. Later, bought a 2014 Premier with nav, Bose stereo, a back up camera and rear parking sensors. 6 miles after 30 minutes plugged into a Level 2 charge is right; it has a 3.3 kWh onboard charger. Full charge on Level 2 in about 3 hours. 120V is perfect for getting a full charge overnight. It holds a ton of cargo with seats folded down, laughs at long inclines, especially in mountain mode. Not a cornering car, but it’s a quick cruiser. Mine has 85k miles on it. Super durable and reliable on not so great LA roads, but great LA weather.
Agree loved the design from the first time I saw it. Finally bought one, love it. 5000 mi on 5.7 gal of gas. Like the ELR, but figure it'd hard to find parts.
If you have the app for that charging system, you can lower the cable from your phone. However, THAT particular charger may have been set to only lower its cord when the adjoining lane was a legal parking space, not during rush hour when it's a traffic lane.
If you like that one, you should try the 2nd-gen. It's a fair bit faster and genuinely quick below 40mph (2.2s 0-30), and range is up to 53 miles. The center console layout is better, and the car itself looks pretty good. I got a 2017 as a stopgap a couple years ago, and it's been a far better car than I expected and a far better car than it should be for what's essentially a Cruze with a battery.
The only thing I remember about the Volt, and maybe I'm wrong or maybe it wasn't this model year, was that it had stupid long hybrid range, to the tune of like 500 miles or something. The only sedan that springs to mind as longer range between fill-ups are certain pre-emissions Volkswagen diesels.
I don't believe that the gas engine can run without contributing to moving the car forward mechanically. There are planetary gear sets which always connect it , I think. It's complicated!
I almost bought one of these new back then! I was getting ready to trade in my 2007 Pontiac G5 for a 2015 Chevy Volt to hold me over until I could afford a Tesla, when I ended up winning a 2015 Fiat 500 in a $40 raffle at a restaurant. That ended up holding me over just fine until I was able to get my Tesla Model 3 in 2018. Looking back it would've been find, but if I hadn't won the Fiat I probably could've just kept the G5 going for 3 more years, too.
I have a 2013 Ford Cmax PHEV. It's definitely a little boring. And kinda ugly with its bubble shape. But it has good back seat room, and will hold 3 in a pinch. Hatchback space is compromised. I generally get 12-18 miles of range after charging at home. Down from the rated 20 miles. I bought it used in 2020 for $6k. Here's the thing. It is ridiculously cheap to own. I have 150kmiles on it and needs little service. Fewer oil changes or brake jobs. In the summer I've gotten over 1000 miles to a fill-up. I highly recommend it as commuter, or run around car for a small family. Unless you're self conscious about an ugly car. My wife named it The Zamboni.
