    Hey guys I just want to say thank you for the videos and more importantly the way you do them. I've noticed on the internet especially backpacking and camping becomes more about the gear you're using and the clever new gadgets. You remind people what it's really about: the experience. The friendship, the nature, and the fun experiences which always accompany any backpacking trip.

    • @AdventureArchives

      +asthmaticrhino Thanks so much for your kind words! We definitely wanted to focus on those experiences and the philosophy and interactions when we started the show, so it means a lot that you said that :) Thank you for watching! Cheers :) -Andrew

    Well said on the "Why would you camp in the winter?" speech Bryan. Sometimes we set out to camp in harsh conditions just to have a chance to actually use our gear and tools to maintain the good time. Very rewarding and gratifying to come away from a harsh camp with a smile.

    As always A+. Your camera work and editing is top notch. However what I feel really sets you guys apart from the rest is your narration. You have the ability to really capture is words the emotions ones feels while being in the great outdoors and you do a phenomenal job of relaying those to others. Keep doing what you are doing.

    Hi, just a quick little trick you probably know about. Use a soda straw to blow on the hot coals. Really puts the wind right where you want it and like a jet stream, doesn't take much. I watch all your vids, they are GREAT.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! And thank you for watching :) Actually, we recently got this metal tube thing that extends like a telescope that's specifically for blowing on the coals, and we try it in our upcoming episode, haha. Not quite as lightweight as a straw, though! Cheers -Andrew

    Sugarfree bacon... had never heard of so I checked all varieties found here in Sweden, NONE contained any sugars. They have meat, salt, conservation and added smoke flavor. But also, we wouldn’t put sugars on popcorn and we eat licorice and anjovis. You might like it here 😁

  • @BuckeyeHiker
    @BuckeyeHiker 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man oh man.......best one yet fellas. You guys dont make it about the gear, or the miles racked up but rather embracing the pure joy of the adventure. Bryan summed it up perfectly when explaining why one would choose to put themselves out in the backwoods at all, let alone in the winter far away from our creature comforts that we have all so engrained into our daily existence. It is about embracing the art of the possible, that heightens our spirit in facing the daily grind and widens our perspective on what simple problems we give way too much power to.
    Also, props to you guys for making relevant references to Thoreau and Costanza! Very inspiring! Please keep em coming guys.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BuckeyeHiker So glad you liked the video!! And absolutely - gear will only get you so far, and it will only make you so happy. I think the reason all of us (including the three of us often times) can obsess about gear is because it's sort of a replacement for being outside when we're stuck inside or cooped up at a job.
      Haha, and thanks so much! Glad you caught the seinfeld reference too. Thanks again! --Andrew

    "Maybe we should be mad at our jobs, for making us late to our families." If I wasn't already subbed, I would have just for that. I had a job like that for 6 years. One day I quit, and even with less money, I've never been happier. My 3 yr old and I went skipping rocks at the river today, got caught in a rainstorm, hid in a farmshed, and she was laughing the whole time. You can't buy that. Thanks guys

    Strange how certain moments can take us back in time, to a place that we have stored in our memories for years. The scene with the three of you, cooking around your fire, with silent night playing in the background, did just that. Our small band of Marine's were settled in one Christmas eve, on a particularly quite night, in Vietnam. It was raining, so we sat huddled under our shelter halves, cooking our c-rats, and quietly sang, silent night. Keep doing what you're doing, just the way your doing it. Stay safe. Happy trails.

    I gaze out my window and smile at the newly budding trees just beyond the deck. My attention moves gently back to the lads of Adventure Archives, steadfastly crunching through a cold, icy wilderness. 20... 30... 40 minutes pass. After all, time is meaningless. I let my eyes wander back to the window. The same window as before. The budding trees are now obscured by sideways snow. My peaceful smile slowly, painfully contorts into a dead-eyed sneer. This is Minnesota. And it is April.

      @AdventureArchives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Caden Myers Yeahh, I really want to go back in the fall, and I've been wanting to do an off-trail trip. It's one of my favorite places. I know they say that there is still live ordnance from WWII there, but I'm assuming it's pretty much all cleaned up? Where did you go for your trip? Thanks so much for watching! Cheers :) -Andrew

    • @CadenMyers
      @CadenMyers 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdventureArchives I went to Hocking College and our class went on the off-trail trip. Our professor gave us coordinates of an ordnance that a previous class found. We didn't find it so i assume someone came and got it. We went off-trail around the beaver pond i believe. Would need to show you guys a map to get the right cordinates we took.

    Nice follow up to your other Dolly Sods video. The winter bathing section is funny. I think I'd have a heart attack though. This area has always fascinated me since it is largest example of boreal bogland that far south, and therefore is home to many northern plants. Orchids are my greatest interest, and I'm confident the area is crawling with them.

    Cool video fellas. I love Dolly Sods and recognize some of the spots you visited. +1 for the Costco green sweater (I think I have the same one). I only took canned octopus and oysters on a backpacking trip once (enough said). Dolly Sods is the first (but not last) place I got temporarily geospacially disoriented (lost) while backpacking and had to use some reckoning, map and compass skills to get reoriented. Some of the trail junctions at Red Creek are easy to miss, amiright!

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FloydofOz Haha nice! My mom shops at costco all the time. Actually, those pants I'm wearing are from there too, haha. I actually took canned oysters to our most recent trip, but never ended up eating them, so it won't be in the next episode unfortunately. Luckily all of our trails were fairly easy, but I can easily see getting lost. I'd like to do an off-trail trip at Dolly Sods sometime. Thanks for watching! --Andrew

Glad you like the plant/tree stuff. There's a huge wealth of bushcraft knowledge all over the internet. It's a great thing to get into. Thanks again! -Andrew

    Nice video. I have done some cross country ski camping at Dolly Sods in the middle and end of winter.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mike alwill We've always wanted to do cross country ski camping! But some things are better left to people who know what they're doing... although it would make for some good entertainment to watch us trying to figure it out. lol

    • @mikealwill7013
      @mikealwill7013 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a place at the base of Dolly Sodds called White Grass. They rent all types of cross country skis. The property used to be an old downhill ski lodge. I think the state or federal govt now own the land. White Grass runs the cross country ski rentals/passes in winter. There is a state run campground with hot showers in the winter nearby. One can also use the hotels hot tub, indoor pool, and sauna for a small fee while camping.

      +mike alwill Sounds amazing. And that's good to know, thanks for the info! Is it pretty easy to cross country ski the first time?

    • @mikealwill7013
      @mikealwill7013 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you start on flat areas with little or no hills. But if you try super steep hills, not easy at 1st.

    Another great job guys! Great video and awesome location- you guys have a great chemistry and it's really fun to watch the interplay between the three of you. I am really intrigued by Dolly Sods as well and would like to get there sometime in the next year if I can find a two day chunk of free time- which I don't get much of anymore! Lol. I think it's only a 3 hour drive and seems well worth it. Thanks for sharing.

      @AdventureArchives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      WoodsTrekka' Thanks so much for watching, and we're glad you like it! It's funny seeing how awkward we were original in front of the camera in the first dolly sods episode.
      And yeah, free time is unfortunately harder to come by these days. But it's definitely worth it, especially if it's only 3 hours from where you are. Even an overnighter would be a great time, I think.

    I always find myself coming back to re-watch this episode and the Yosemite. There's something so charming about winter backpacking with snow covering the ground but also about Yosemite and it's epic valley and vast mountains. I'm guessing you guys already have plans for where you're planning on going this winter but I think it would be really awesome if you returned to Yosemite this winter when there's snow on the ground. -Jason

      @AdventureArchives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Musto Awesome! Thanks a bunch for watching. Always cool to meet people who watched it when it first started. Yeah, unfortunately the second season is progressing slower than we'd like, but we will have a new episode coming out on August 10th!
      As for winter camping, it's definitely a great time. I will say that we were in temperatures hovering around 30 degrees F, but if they drop further below that, you definitely need to think hard about what sort of gear and skills you're bringing, etc. But this was definitely a great winter camping trip.
      Thanks for watching! -Andrew

    Failproof fire staring for me has always been cotton ball(s) soaked with pet. jelly.
    And I'm with you on the snow=T.P. idea. Learned that one from NOLS guidelines (and an uncle that taught me to hunt deer).

      @AdventureArchives  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce Hodson For sure. I have yet to actually try using cotton balls with petroleum jelly, but I imagine they light up really nice.
      Haha, yeah, snow is fantastic toilet paper. And it leaves you feelin' clean, haha. Do you hunt often? We have some friends/family who hunt deer and are hoping to learn more sometime.
