Did we find the SECRET to a 300 mile range? - Ford E-Transit EV work van

  • We wanted to see how each drive mode effected the range on the E-Transit. So we set up a 12.2 mile course and we started driving. We tested Normal Mode, Eco Mode, Slippery Mode, and Eco Model with L-Mode activated. Then we came up with our own driving mode and altered the conditions to what we thought would produce the best range. Boy were we surprised to learn just how much range you can get with this van. Come along with us in our battery powered service van as we learn which mode offers the best range.

    Interesting hyper mileage testing. Some people are griping about range on ev’s, but they’re out there drag racing from every light and running at 70 to 80 miles an hour. Easy acceleration and even 60 mph would make such a difference for this.

      Lets do 20 degrees with snow and windshield wipers on. So you keep it in the heated shop so you start out warm but by the time your finished with the first service call that is gone. Then you try to box in the front cab so you dont have to heat the whole truck and then you get to work with 20 degree tools all day including your lithium based tools that have to warm up before they work again. These things are pretty much useless in colder climates.

    • @SmedleyPlumbing
      @SmedleyPlumbing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyspadafora1384 as soon as we get 20° days we'll be doing exactly that. All our other trucks are set up the same way and don't heat the cargo portion. Most plumbing vans don't heat the cargo area. So dealing with cold tools and materials is common in the winter regardless of being a gas or electric van.
      But we are looking forward to a range comparison test once we see temps in the 20's all day here.

    Thanks for the video! I'm in the middle of spec'ing out a high roof extended length right now. I have a Nissan Leaf as my personal vehicle and I'm familiar with the benefits of EV's. 90% of my driving for my business is in-town, stop-and-go driving. If found with my Leaf that I get FAR greater range in that kind of driving environment that I do setting on the highway driving one speed. I am a little worried about the winter time range reduction, but because I'm a pool guy in Kansas, I don't do nearly as much driving doing spa repairs in the winter, so I'm hopeful it won't be an issue for me. • @Tron-Jockey
    @Tron-Jockey ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Your "Slippery" mode appears to be the same as "ECO" mode on my Nissan Leaf. It adds hysteresis to the accelerator pedal making the accelerator feel a bit more sluggish and the vehicle slightly less responsive. Since electric motors are less efficient when they're just beginning to turn adding this small bit of hesitancy to the accelerator serves to help conserve a little energy on every take off. This mode likely makes the regen a bit more aggressive as well. Under a scenario with a lot of stop and starting (inner city driving, stop-n-go traffic, etc...), that small amount of energy saved with each acceleration begins to add up. This is especially true if speeds rarely exceed typical inner city speeds.

I need something that can do this comfortably without any hacks and allow me to run the A/C overnight while parked. I do feel 300 mile range will be the magic number for many. The rumor is Ram will be announcing a new E-Promaster with around 250 range (possibly more) before year end. Any energy storage method wether it be battery or gas will have the potential to propel a vehicle a certain distance, depending on the way the vehicle is driven. If you choose to floor or drag race any vehicle it will use more energy than if you didn’t and just took things easy. The thing that differs bout the EV is that you store less energy, compared to a gas vehicle and recharging takes longer than filling with gas. If folk took the time to understand the how and why if EV’s it would help them make informed choices about EV’s. Delivery and Uber drivers can easily realise 400 miles per charge in their EV’s driving around urban areas where the maximum speed limit is either 20 or 30 mph.

    I would like to get an E Transit but the dealerships in Washington state just wanted to jack up the price one dealer who had one it would cost $61,000 similar to your vehicle that you have they wanted $7,000 above MSRP I spoke to another dealer as I was saying that I needed to order one for 2023 and I asked him, what guarantee do I have that when I ordered a vehicle that I will get it at MSRP he said what's MSRP . what experience did you have when you ordered yours

      The Portland area dealers are listing the E-Transits at MSRP. They sell almost as fast as they come in though, but keep checking the Ford site, using the inventory search feature. But double check the window stickers... Sometimes gassers show up when searching EVs. Even the Willamette Valley dealers are stocking them, so check south of Portland as well.

    Do you tow a trailer at all with the EV? That is the only thing stopping me from buying one. Ford has no tow capacity for the EV transit. I am a irrigation contractor in NJ and I tow a landscape trailer with a machine on it once and a while and in fall I tow a air compressor.

    • @SmedleyPlumbing
      @SmedleyPlumbing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't offer a towing option yet. Our unit doesn't even have a tow/haul mode. It also doesn't apply full power until 40 mph. So it wouldn't tow well as it's currently equipped.

    This van is the biggest piece of junk. Regret buying on. 119 mile range is a joke, 130 miles if you baby it. Doing my own review video but it’s garbage almost unusable… giving it to an installer that will hopefully not have to make multiple trips to the parts house and be able to charge overnight but as a service van this thing failed and roadtripping it to a new market was a disaster… I drove it 900 miles to Phoenix and it took 1.5 days and almost didn’t make it to one stretch hyper miled it like crazy…. And had to overnight charge (no level 3stations within 170 miles)

    • @SmedleyPlumbing
      @SmedleyPlumbing  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like you set yourself up for failure. You knew the range before you bought but claim the low range is a problem. Then you took it on a 900 mile trip and got mad that you had to charge a ton. I don't know what to tell you. It's not for everyone and it sounds like it's sure not for you. Can't blame the van that you shouldn't have bought it though. That would be like buying 1/2-ton truck and then getting mad that it won't tow 20,000 pounds.

      Ford set themselves up for failure and didn’t do their product research on what’s needed in the North American market. Everyone needs 200+ mile range. I gave it a try to see if we could make it work for an installer and sent it to a market to see if it would work in the flatlands but it doesn’t period… this van sucks lol. Keep telling yourself it works.
