    Great detail video but one question. I have city water hookup and am looking at replacing our 22 year old water heater. There is not an expansion tank installed but all sources indicate that I should. It’s been this way for over 20 years with no issues so why should I even worry about it?

    • @SmedleyPlumbing

      Perform a thermal expansion test before removing your current unit to know for sure. Watch the pressure gauge while the unit is heating and no taps are open.

    Without expansion tank, water will go back to the inlet pipes when heated. If inlet pipe (public water is at 65 psi, the public water pipe will take on the expansion therefore water heater will not flow out the pressure valve.

    I've never had a water heater relief valve lift to relieve pressure in my 50 years of home ownership. If the community water supply line does not have a check valve in the line the water heater pressure can not exceed the line pressure of the water supply.

    • @SmedleyPlumbing

      This is true. Without a check valve or a pressure regulation valve you should not have the conditions present for a thermal expansion tank.

    I suspect box stores have a cap on how much they'll pay for a "pro" water heater. If that's true, then the manufacturer will cut their costs so that they can still make a profit. I'm not a plumber, but this is good information. I'm sure I'll be replacing my water heater in the next few years, so thank you.

    We've been complaining to our village water utility for years about low water pressure. It is always under 45 psi. They tell us that we are not downhill far enough from the water tower to have any higher pressure. I think that excuse is garbage. We need to increase our pressure, not worry about expansion.

    for years our municipality did not require backflow preventers on the incoming cold water line. so any pressure build up caused by the hot water tank pushed the pressure/water back out onto the municipal water main.. when they made it mandatory that all water systems (including existing) have a backflow preventer, if the home did not all ready have an expansion tank, an expansion tank was installed at the time of the installation of the backflow preventer.. .

  • @stevemckerroll4865
    @stevemckerroll4865 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    you say it will build enormous pressure... not really.... it will only build pressure until the pressure relief valve on the water tanks blows off.. so only builds up pressure to what ever the relief valve is set too.. for most tanks that would be about 150 psi.

      @@SmedleyPlumbing I have not watched any of your other videos, but somehow I doubt a shorter video is the problem. Or at least not the largest one. A concise format is usually the preference for 'most people', unless all the extra time and detail actually matter and move it along properly. Editing the video so that you have both parts being shown, taken apart, and weighed at the same time instead of going back and forth from one to the other would be a great start IMO. Along with text being put into the video for a running tally instead of going to the white board. Voice over it with an actual script that is not needlessly repetitive. I assume you wanna do this yourself as easy as possible - but with YT vids, going the extra mile and spending some $ on the product you put out can make a massive difference in how people respond to a video. (I did like the video and give thumbs up, but I just like to nitpick things I guess.)

Bottom element test about the same. Continuity test OK of course. Good grounds. What gives here?

    • @SmedleyPlumbing

      If the element fails near the tip then you can get equal readings from each leg. If you've cleaned the sediment and replace the thermostats then I would move to replacing the elements. Make sure you put the covers back on afterwards so that the thermostats are reading the water temp instead of the room air temp.

    I’ve had to deal with a leaky bathroom sink faucet. The hot water kept dripping. Wouldn’t turn completely off. So I turned the water off and took apart the hot water faucet and took the cartridge thing out and went to the hardware store to get another. Found the right one and put it in. Still dripping. So after about another month of this, I figured I’d just replace the whole faucet. Told my wife “this shouldn’t take long” (big mistake - never say something won’t take long!) I took the old faucet out and the new one had a replacement drain as well. I figured I’d go ahead and swap that out since it came with a new one. I don’t fit under a sink, easily. I have to fold up a bit and it’s not fun to say the least. I couldn’t get the tailpiece off the sink for nothing. I’m turning and it just goes around and around, not loosening. My frustration factor is going up. I was putting so much force on the sink from underneath, it starts to come up out of the cabinet. (The caulk let go and the sink is now free). I had a lightbulb moment - just take the darn sink completely out, sit it in the floor and then wrestle with the tailpiece and get it off then. I had to turn the water off again and take the water lines off. Well, the hot water side wouldn’t complely shut off. It kept dripping. Back to the hardware store to get two new shutoff valves. This time I had to shut off the water to the whole house. I discovered the water wouldn’t shut completely off at the main valve by the house. So I turned the water off at the meter down by the road. Now the water is completely off. I replace the two valves under the sink and finally get the tailpiece off the bottom of the sink (it ended up breaking so I was able to just get the whole thing out). Put the new one on. Not so fast! I needed silicone or plumber’s putty. Looked in my work area for silicone or something. Didn’t have any. Trip #3 to the hardware store. Now I’m back with some putty and I put the drain in. I get the sink installed and turn the water on. Turns out a piece of washer from inside the old cutoff valve lodged in the hot water pipe so I didn’t have pressure. I manage to dig out the piece of washer lodged in the pipe. So I turn the water back on. Still no pressure on the hot water side. So I take the aerator off and find bits and pieces of the washer in there. I turn the water on without the aerator and even more bits come out from the faucet. So I put the aerator on and everyting works! And no drips since it’s a new faucet! This took all evening and three trips to the store. Now I’m sore from getting in and out from under my sink. I told my wife I don’t care how much someone would pay me, I would not be a plumber for ANY amount of money!
