    IMO, recharging is a bigger issue than range. If recharging wasn’t so inconvenient, the transition would be a lot less painful

      Yeps, that’s why Tesla has gotten as big as they are. Just stick the plug in and walk away. It’s beyond me why others can’t figure that out.

      @@aussie2uGA They have figured it out. It's called plug to charge. That said, most manufacturers don't want to pay the license fees. It makes no sense because it would make for a better selling point.

      Yep. I got my first EV in 2018. The charging infrastructure was pretty bad back then. Then in just a year and a half, it improved massively. By early 2020, it was great.
      Since then, networks have spent far more time adding new stations than maintaining what they have. So while there are stations all over now, they are rarely fully working. I was amazed that my last visit to an Electrify America, _only_ one of the four stalls was broken.

      I'll switch when I can pay with a card, the chargers actually work every time you pull up to one, and they're as conveniently located as gas stations. Far too much inconsistency in charging networks right now. I can use any of my several cards (and also cash, in a pinch) at any gas station in America. If a pump goes down, there's someone there to tape it off and call for a repair, so you don't bother trying to use it, and it gets fixed quickly.
      It's bad enough that charging takes so much longer than pumping gas. I'm not jumping through extra hoops, too.

      @@TheCharleseye Absolutely. Just eliminate the payment completely too, let your vehicle figure out the details with the charger, like a Tesla does.

    Thank you for the $9,500 price difference info Andre. My gas powered Transit gets about 14 mpg due to the wind resistance of ladder rack. I figure it would take around 30-35k miles to get that investment back if gas prices hold.
    It sucks that Ford doesn't offer a larger battery pack, but at least they were bold enough to green-light both the e-Transit and F150 Lightning projects.

      It has nothing to do with being bold. These are entry level electric vehicles that are going to be leapfrogged by RAM and Chevy in range and power in a year or two.

      @@ryandoyle4344 it stands to reason that if you're towing 5,000 pounds it cuts your range by one half in an F-150, so I'm sure that loading that truck with anywhere near its capacity will definitely shorten the range. Pretty useless at this point and that's why they're sitting on the dealer's lots unsold

      I guess Ford figured most of the E-transits will be used around town where hundreds of km aren't really needed. Plus just getting as many of them out on the road as possible with smaller battery packs is free advertising versus just having a few vehicles hoarding batteries they will probably never need since BEV manufacturing (outside of Tesla and Chinese autos) is very battery supply constrained right now.

    What a nightmare indeed. Can you imagine the long lines at charging stations if every vehicle on the road was battery powered?? Imagine how many charging stations would stop working at any given time?? This is a nightmare in the making.

      Why don’t you do your research. When ICE cars first came out you had to go to the pharmacy to get your glass bottles of gasoline.

    TIP for everyone, you can start the charger while sitting inside your car on the charge point app. No need to swipe the charger itself. Works every time

    After owning a sprinter for a few years before the cp4 fuel pump went out and it required a new fuel system for over 16k. The only issue I would see with the transit is… it is significantly easier to back a big long vehicle in a parking spot than pulling in forward. Which… is going to make charging inaccessible. The probably will need to address the port locations or add more in the future.

      There are also numerous accident safety studies that say backing out into cross traffic is way more dangerous than backing to the spot, and being able to pull out facing forward with better vision. Pulling front into the spot is simply dangerous, not just inconvenient.

    Are you going to do a maxed payload trip to show how far we can go fully max loaded mixed driving around town & highway. I’d love to see you do it in the winter when it’s cold too. I’m interested in getting them for my plumbing & HVAC business.

      Guessing, 68 to 85 miles. 1m/kw for cold & loaded, 1.25m/kw for loaded. TFLTrucks tests seem to drop 50%, so 2.5m/kw to 1.25m/kw.

    These make total sense for the in-town service folks. Especially if you can charge overnight at the shop, and/or they're near a place they can charge during lunch, range should be 0 issue. Or if you're only going to a single jobsite for the day if you're in the commercial business. Just the potential for almost 0 maintenance and cost of ownership will pay for itself in no time. (new vs new that is)
    But obviously until charging and battery tech gets near as good as gas, you'll probably still want to keep some ICE vans in the fleet. Paying extra windshield time on a long drive may or may not make financial sense.

    So Ford wants a $9500 premium for this vs the same configuration using gas engine. Is that how they compensate dealers who will rarely see these vehicles due to almost no maintenance?

      Probably not since the stealerships will probably add another 5-7k on top of that for "market adjustments."

      One video by an electric top range car the regular service came to 700 pounds plus the car needed 2 new tyres at 20K.

    Good real world video. Andre does a great job, as always. Even though everything worked this day, public chargers do need improvement. However the E-transit should be a DREAM to charge, not a nightmare. It is key that you install as many L2 chargers at your facility as you buy E-transits. Maybe install a few extra for contingencies. Use the vans on routes that use less than 70% battery, charge overnight, and everything will be great! 😀

    I have almost 7k miles on my 2022 E-transit and never get above 2 miles per Kw on the highway. Andrey must have been going under the speed limit and drafting a semi to get near 3 miles per Kw. Recently, during a 99 mile trip up to my cabin, my average was 1.6 miles per Kw. I almost did not make it.
    Also, no mention of the Continental van contact all season tires.

    I'd put an e-bike in the back for when it leaves me stranded. I like how efficient they are but you'll need to be more diligent so you don't get stranded out of charge. Better have a good tow policy.

    RV conversion. 8 hour sleep at the charger full power and your awake and ready to roll. Toy hauler kind of conversion so you can still. Haul when you are not "camping". Hammock option if you want to sleep cheap and comfortable.

      @@zachlafond2652 i drive 63 mph. It is the sweet spot for most EVs. 2.4 miles per kWh. For 67 kWh is about 160 miles at 63 mph is about 2.5 hours with a 20-30 minute stop to stretch your legs buy groceries or use the bathroom. 120 kW DCFC charge speed isn't bad. Vs a 15 mpg class B is about 10-11 gallons or $50. Vs where i live Free to $20 per hr to DCFC. 2.5 x3 plus 1 hour charging and then a 10 kW AC charge for 7 hours while you rest. Then carry on or 50 kW DCFC for 1.5 hours and have a nap on your futon. Then carry on for another 8.5 hours depends how far you are going 900 miles a day. Cook your own food. Live cheap and eat well.
      ICE drive 900 miles for $300. Or charge the EV drive 900 miles for $40. Grocery food is about 1/3rd the price another $40 per person vs $12. You drive 900 miles to go camping spend $340 to get there plus propane costs etc... $50 plus $340 to get back. It takes the EV 1 to 2 hours longer and costs $52 each way plus $10 to power the weeks vacation. Assuming you don't have solar. Solar charges 800Wh of battery every hour and most people camp in summer up here that is 5 am to 10 pm sunlight. 17x.5 is 8.5 kWh a day. Minus usage. 2.5 kWh. So 6 kWh a day. x7 days 42 kWh or 2/3 the battery.
      Total cost in power is $720 vs $120. You might get paid $30 an hour that is working 3 extra days to drive 1,800 miles. Plus B class campers are really expensive.

    In your experience, is the charging experience getting better overall or is it still a bit of a crapshoot? I have an ID4 on order, first quarter 23 delivery expected (hoping VW irons out their software issues by then) and it will be interesting to see how much of a pain in the ass it is as a roadtrip machine. The 30 minutes a day of free Electrify America charging is a nice perk with the VW. Love the work you do Andre!

    What do you do when the ‘rolling blackouts’ occur when demand outstrips the grids ability to supply electricity?
    Can you imagine the mayhem if a surge or fault trips the circuit breakers during the night and you discover not a single delivery vehicle has sufficient charge to operate! 🤔

    Something odd, after the EA station it jumped back to something Andre talked about earlier in the video with specs and pricing, like duplicating or seems in editing suite didn't realise it was duplicated. Amazed the EA station worked but it looked like the new hardware was it the BTC chargers or Cygnet units as BTC don't work in cold as Kyle found from Out of Spec.

    Charge Point has been the most reliable J plug option in New Jersey. Electrify America chargers are typically down in my area.

      The Bolt EUV is an amazing vehicle but it isn't good for road trips. If you have another video for journeys over 200 miles than you'll love the Bolt
      They use an older architecture which fast charges at 50kw so it takes about an hour to recharge on the road
      If you don't need it for road trips, or road trip rarely, it's fantastic!
      In winter, just make sure to preheat the car because it uses a resistance heater which saps range

    I would be a little concerned with the charging port at the nose of the vehicle. A minor fender bender could render it unchargeable..

    A diesel pump in the uk runs at 45 liters per minute..so to fill 85 liter tank is sup 2 minutes

    I'd like to know if there's any rules on how long you can be at a charging station. Like if you're getting a bite to eat and it's fully charged long before you get back to unplug it and there's someone waiting for it.

      That is all up to the individual charger vendor and location. In some areas it will start to bill you if you’re “idle” and all the other chargers are occupied.

      With Tesla, if the station is over 1/2 full of cars charging, and you complete, I think it's $1/min fee. You do get notifications in advance that it's almost done, and when it's actually done

      It really depends on the place. In some shopping centers here in SoCal they charge you whatever the price/kWh but tack on a "parking" fee after a set number of hours. Not every place does this so it's really up to the discretion of the vendors who installed it.

      After your car is fully charged, EA gives you a "grace period" which I believe is 10 minutes before you get charged idle fees.

    Overall, the E-transit is a bust with Lithium batteries. It needs at least 150 miles of fully loaded range and needs to fully charge in 10 minutes or less.

    Hello, I just bought one. I am also seeing about 2.5 mile per kw/h. It can defiantly go 180miles on a single charge city driving, relatively flat land. Also i feel ford is being really secretive about their battery, since it's kind of new they aren't pushing it. I feel like the full battery potential is software locked so it can outlast the warranty they have. A tesla has the same battery but can get 300 miles on a charge. An empty Ford transit cannot. I understand ford transit maybe slightly larger/ aerodynamics of a village but still should be able to get atleast 70% of the range of a Tesla with the same battery if not better.

    what charges the batteries ?, alternators how many amps, and can more batteries be added ?

    I have seen transporters with 400km range. And i know a business that does deliveries in two rounds 200km each with 1 to 1.5 hours break. Would be ideal for that.

    Question for anyone that knows. Does a taller eVan get less milage per charge than a shorter eVan. Considering wind resistant.

    I think the transit is really going to struggle to stay relevant when others come to market with ground up Ev designs, just slapping a battery onto their existing chassis means they will never be able to compete with the power to weight ratio a structural battery pack will offer. I can see it easily being a 200kg difference which will got to extra payload and or range. Hopefully for Ford it has something new on the drawing board for the next year or two...But I'd doubt it because why would you put so much energy into re engineering this if a ground up is so close.

    First of all no one ever charges out in the wild on level two chargers. Secondly, you can always check your charge on your phone. Lastly, I would never charge my E transit on anything but an electrify America station. They charge 150 kW, and all you have to do is plug the van in and everything starts automatically. No jerking around with apps.

    I just noticed a free 6-station ChargePoint charger near me (but I don't have an EV yet). I wonder if they'll stay free, or if it's just during a test phase.

      A lot are free or the first hour or two are free. I see them at strip malls and big box stores. Level 2 chargers, so probably 32 amps at 240 volts gets you 28 miles of range per hour. Gets you in the stores for a buck or two of electricity.

      I doubt it. Supply and demand, when everyone is forced to use and EV, electricity prices will go up. I would expect this will affect home energy prices as well. Those without an EV, will pay more for electricity as well. Solar and wind will not cut it.

    One thing I observed is at every station there is no roof structure overhead. Doing this while pouring down rain could be on the dangerous side, if you know what I mean.

    I put a liquid type stuff in my Transit tank this morning and I did 547 miles and now I’m home, I believe they call it diesel ? Still it works fine, electric vehicle is the answer to a question that never needs asking

    So, depending on electricity cost at say 15 cents a KWH, then maybe at about 70 thousand miles you might break even over a gas vehicle, maybe. But then they will tax you for mile driven since you don't pay road taxes by buying gas, that price is not in there. Then I would guess insurance is more. Then of course, you may need 2 vans since one may not have enough charge for your needs at any given moment, plus, you don't want to travel with that thing do you? You have to live your life around the nearest charger, and plan trips that take longer. Plus, electrical costs are going to soar gigantically as time goes on, probably triple. What then?

    Interesting that the chargers tend to require an App to engage. Cant tell if they typically have a CCard reader? There is no attendant, you cant pay cash if your phone is on the fritz.

    There's really no other options for EV Cargo vans and this one seems to work if you're trained & informed, would be a nightmare to do a road-trip with (due to the low range and risk of high time charge wait times) but seems fine for the city.

      @@PantyDropper69 When you live in a rural city or town, and you have clients that live 50 miles from you, you will want to be able to get there and back without worrying if your van will die on the side of the 2-lane mountain highway. And you willl have to have ICE vans for your clients that live further away.

    you're running 180 mile capacity rig but happy with 20 mins of charge to get you to 70% charge, 130 miles or so. that's not a lot for a rig designed to drive to job sites. this video doesn't show if you happen to arrive when all the chargers are being used.
    I drive 25 miles each way to my site and that's really close in the construction world.
    I hope people are doing the math of the cost of doing nothing while your EV charges up. I would be wasting an additional half hour every other day to avoid range anxiety.
    just so you know in the contracting world, you're suppose to work up to an hour and a half away from your home, each way.

And we're hoping that the battery will have a long service life because the people in the trades industry travel a lot. If you're a big company you can take on that risk, for small time businesses, I'm not sure.

      @@MoctezumasRevenge1 the van comes with a charger. So the only thing you’ll need at home is a 240 v outlet like that of a clothes drier. Yes, there is cost. But a dedicated charging station is not needed for overnight charging at home

    i'm a bit confused on the 1st charging station? According to the spec sheet the van supports up to 11.3 KW AC charging but you got 7.2 kw out of the station as shown @ 6:52? Surely, they have to build stations that do 22-43 kw AC at the minimum for public EV charging? From my research it seems there is a company that holds the patent for 43 kw AC fast charging that is holding up cheaper and wider adoption of this standard and that is sad if true! I see lot of 43 KW AC charging capable stations but they are never 100% utilised to full power/speed due to the EV on board chargers limited to 11-22 KW!

      The van can only charge as fast as what the "charger" will provide. The max you will get at public level 2 chargers is 7.2. Most are even lower. A 7.2 with 2 cables and both being used will divide it in 2 and only provide 3.6! Public level 2 charger, unless serving as a destination charger (overnight charging) are useless.

      AC charging is meant for slow charging. You need to unstated KW, Volts and Amps to see why they switch to DC for fast charging.
      AC is perfect for overnight while you're sleeping and the car is stationary.

Meanwhile, the fact that every company is using this new tech as an excuse to mine us for data is ridiculous. Maybe I just don't want to have to make sure I have six apps with six different accounts for six different companies, just to "fuel" my car. Cash and cards are ubiquitous at gas stations. Many of us get paid in cash and don't want to run to the bank on a limited battery, before hoping to make it to the nearest (working) charge station.
      Cash is the only actual money. If these companies don't want actual money, I suppose I'll keep giving it to the gas stations.

      Like he said in the video, an L2 is best for plugging at home in your driveway at night - wake up the next morning with a full charge. You need to reframe the experience from a fuel stop as a thing you have to do during the day, to charging your car anytime while you do other things (sleep, work, shop, eat, etc).

I am a mechanic, and these EVs have so many things that could (and do ) go wrong with them, but the EV followers will not see the problems, they are blinded much like the Democratic Party.

      @@DeepFriarShow When it is below freezing, I wait in the car while it refills. And I rarely turn it off. With a diesel that is perfectly fine. But it would only be on a long trip that I would be using a fast charger, since my EV would charge in my garage or shop most of the time (when I get one). But I would NEVER take a BEV on a long road trip in the winter. I would need 500 miles actual range up and down mountains at 80 mph freeway speeds in winter before I would even consider a BEV for that. For me, BEVs are only run around town cars. And they are too expensive for that usage.

I don’t care if there is a video about it, it’s a real life scenario for those of us who live it for 5mo out of the year in the far north. And I can tell you, messing around with a silly charger when it’s way below zero with -60 windchill would be an absolute nightmare.

      @@pryme2013 sure, EVs aren’t for everyone yet. I personally would love a pickup EV but also find use cases that they simply wouldn’t be practical or beneficial for me, and I’m okay with that for now.
      Regarding charging in inclement weather, the differences would likely be the same. Longer charge time and general circumstances associated with freezing weather and vehicles. Not much else to really think about there.

      @@ALMX5DP What wouldn’t be the same is pulling up to the pump when it’s -20 below in my gasoline pickup and sitting in my truck and having a very trouble free and quick 4min fill up vs pulling up to a electric station and waiting how many hours to fill up to full in my EV? Seems these silly chargers are always finicky too. Makes it even more of a nightmare. When charging stations equal the number of gasoline stations and you can fill up in 5min, I’ll entertain the idea. To each their own though

    EV’s trucks do not work!
    It must replace the full function in the class (cost benefit analysis) performance the same with dramatic cost savings, but it does not. Recharge range anxiety is truly insanity dealing with a platform which was getting more reliable. The recharge time if greater than 5 minutes does not equal my 20 year old E350 Diesel Van. I get 500 miles per tank, and only takes 5 minutes to fill the tank and tows 10,000 lbs. road trips is the rule of the day! It is the reason for a truck! On the humans cause of climate change, I ask who melted the last ice age? How about who froze it? How about the last 5! Did you know the CO2 was 10,000 ppm when the Earth was an ice ball frozen to the equator! What do you think Limestone is? Calcium Carbonate.
    My 2002 E350 SuperDuty 7.3 Diesel Explorer limited SE Van I would like to see an EV do 100% of what my Van can do, has done from hauling my 29foot holiday rambler Trailer 1600 miles from Maine and back, too using my Hercules enclosed truck hauler towing my sons truck and all of his belongings (took the seats out of the Van transforms to a carpeted cargo van) from Navy bases to Navy base my son is a test pilot for the Navy. Not too mention all of the family trips skiing, boating, our ski house is 375 miles one way, boat is 110 miles one way. Just no way I can charge for hours while making a trip 5 minutes to fill the tank with diesel and I am off, many a trip too Pensacola and back too Long Island, or even too many too count trips too Annapolis USNA when my son was a mid. Not too mention the graduation and all the other events. Without room temperature superconducting technology EVs will never meet or exceed my trucks function and cost per mile right now.

      @@anthonyc1883 you have allot of views and they should know the real facts and true costs, in order for us to get the real break through technology which is really room temperature superconducting technology. That will be a huge game changer in everything, not only in transportation but in real energy management with 100% efficiency, something we should have done another moon shot type program on back in 1973 during the first Energy crisis. As you have correctly stated in your hummer Episode all that weight for the battery and it is really equivalent to say 8 gallons of fuel so the pulling around all that weight etc, not to mention the energy in creating the battery the rare Earths, mining, refining, transportation then assembly, not to mention where and how are you going to generate the 70% energy needed to support the new growing electric load and as you pointed out charging stations already maxed out. At the end Efficiency is the rule of the day. Bravo Zulu on your channel and growth.

    Andre EVs do not need a transmission because an electric motors can turn at any speed without blowing up. Transmission are in ICE cars so they can go faster than 20 miles an hour. An EV has a reduction gear so it does not melt the tires off the car as you accelerate. Per min and per KW are set by the state electricity is a utillity and some states have funny rules about how a utility can be charged. I know it is stupid filling at a gas station is not charged by time spent.

      @@chrishansel9324 Porche uses a 2 gear transmission on the etron. It's more for high end speeds at the dragstrip rather than daily use.

    Some clarification: There is Level 1, Level 2 and DC Fast Charge. There is no such thing as "Level 3." You guys probably know this and calling it Level 3 makes more logical sense. It would make more sense to new EV drivers so go for it!

    Station 1, 1 kilowatt after 10 minutes. By the time he leaves, he has 23%. Arrives at station 2. Back down to 21%. Spends about 10 minutes and has gained 12%. Leaves with 33%. Station 3, still has 33% upon arrival? 20 minutes later, he claims it is 70% full and it started at 32%. You decide what you want to take away from this. lol EV's have a place in society. I am just not down with the experience of charging stations. If you live in a situation where getting charged up at your dwelling is not possible, or extremely difficult to do, EV's are not for you. (imo) IF you have a dwelling that it is 100% easy and convenient and your daily/weekly charging is always done at home because you do not commute to the point you need to use a charging station while out, it is a nice deal. However, purchase prices, availability, limited choices and the already shown problems the vehicles themselves have, is it really worth the experimentation for the change from an ICE to EV? You decide.
