The BEST Wireless N64 Controller! Play on original Nintendo 64 console, Switch, Mister FPGA, Saffun

- Nintendo's NSO Switch controller always seems to be out of stock, but I review an alternative. The Saffun 2.4GHz wireless N64 3rd party controller is compatible with the original Nintendo 64 console and memory pack via the N64 receiver, as well as USB receiver for PC emulation, Mister FPGA and Raspberry Pi. I tear it down and measure latency to see how it measures up against an official wired controller. I bought the controller primarily to use on original N64 hardware therefore I haven’t extensively tested on the switch to see if it behaves like the NSO pad in the official N64 emulator.
I also test out a new AliExpress wireless controller and SPOILER ALERT it sucks. I wouldn't be so critical given the price, but the fact that the much superior alternative exists makes this controller redundant in my opinion.
All products were purchased by myself and I did not collaborate with any company in making this review, with no affiliation confounding my opinions.
For those having trouble connecting the Saffun N64 controller to the Nintendo Switch, try the following:
Turn on wired controller options in system settings:
System settings-controller and sensors-pro controller and wired communication-select ‘ON’
Then try resetting the controller, insert the receiver into the dock and hold the receiver’s pairing button which should make the LED flash fast for pairing mode. Press start on the controller. If pairing successful, the red LED lights on both receiver and controller will stop flashing and will be solid red. Make sure the controller is charged. If all else fails then contact the seller

Here’s a fun drinking game: take a shot every time I say the word ‘controller’ in this video and you’ll be under the table in 12 minutes and 18 seconds - เกม
For anyone having trouble connecting to the Switch, these are the steps you need to follow:
1. Using an official Nintendo Controller, go to [System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication] and make sure it's switched [ON].
2. Plug the USB Receiver into the Switch Dock and wait for it to start flashing.
3. Press and Hold the [SYNC] Button on the Receiver until it starts blinking faster. (Can take longer than you'd expect, keep holding it!)
4. Press the [RESET] Button on the Top of the Controller (or Back if it's lying down).
- The 1st LED on the Controller should start to flash.
5. Press the [Start] Button on the Controller and wait for the 1st LED to stay lit.
6. Hold the [Start] and [A] Buttons on the Controller for about 3 seconds, until the 2nd and 4th LEDs light up together.
- This turns on 'Mode C', telling the Switch that the Controller is a Switch Pro Controller, and setting the Buttons to the default N64 Configuration.
- LED 2 and 4 should stay lit together for a short while, before reverting to the default display, which shows which 'Player' the Controller is connected as: LED 1 means Player 1; LED 1 and 2 together means Player 2; LED 1, 2 , and 3 together mean Player 3; and all 4 LEDs together means Player 4.
Sorry for reposting this, but the original post was a bit messy and TH-cam wasn't letting me Edit it.
Thanks again and very much appreciated! I’ve pinned the comment to help those having trouble connecting with the switch
Thanks You so much i just bough it and i can't playing it the right way 😅
when ever I press the reset button it doesn't do anything but when I press the start button LED 1 starts flashing and if I press it again it flashes faster, do you know how to fix this?
@@DapperFrog by the description of a rapidly flashing light it’s probably in pairing mode. If you’ve tried all the above steps (holding start and A) and it won’t sync then I’d contact the seller.
This review nails it. It's the low lag, authentic feeing, and compatible solution I've been looking for. You've answered all the questions I would have had. Thanks for the find and the deep dive. Looking forward to trying it out on pc emulation and hopefully on an eventual MiSTer N64 core. Keep up the awesome and entertaining content. Appreciated.
Now this is a High IQ Review of a Controller.
Excellent review! This made me buy a two pack for my emulation setup and I could not be happier with this purchase. It checked all the boxes in build and comfort, and after some slight altercations to the button mapping it plays perfectly on Batocera. I’ve seen no one else discuss this amazing controller so thank you for bringing it to the light!!
Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad it’s working well in your setup! They’re a very well made modern replica of the original
Dude I was gonna buy this last month and figured it wouldn’t be good. I’m so glad your dropped this awesome review because I’m buying eight of them right now!
8 wow! Would love to see some more colours from the seller
@@MarcoRetro316 lol I meant I’d buy one but the iPhone changed it to eight. Maybe a second one as a backup. Your review sold me 100%. Hope you have a great week and I like forward to your next video.
I bought one of these based on the good reviews of another video, I love this controller, I've had it since May and it's a true quality controller, I've already collected all 120 stars in Mario 64 and all 100 jiggies in Banjo Kazooie, it's a must have for a diehard Nintendo 64 fan.
TH-cam recommend did. me such a huge favor, this is exactly the video I needed! I also have the retrofit controller and saw both of the ones you showed and was not sure if the suffron controller was any good, so thanks a lot. ^^
Ah glad it was helpful and I hope it works as well as it does for me!
Thank you for reviewing this controller. I couldn’t find any one reviewing this specific controller.
You’re welcome 🙏
Daaam, I was looking for a review about this item and just got to a amazing video, super complete that even closes up with the same wish that I have. Congrats on the work. got a sub!
Thanks for the love! For a wireless DC controller, I’m using an Ipega SW025 with a Brook Wingman adapter. It’s the closest controller I’ve found to the look and feel and has 6 face buttons for fighters like MVC2, but required some button remapping. The joystick is super loose and sensitive, but the 2 analog sticks at least makes Quake Arena playable. I’m still holding out for something better. The Retro Fighters StrikerDC controllers are a missed opportunity IMO as they lack a right analog stick and a DualShock controller paired with the Brook adapter has more quality of like improvements for FPS’s. Let’s hope Retro-bit or Saffun pull through. Thanks again for the kind comment.
Love the review man! I scoured the web trying to find anyone that’s tried this thing and here I am! I’m going to get one of these for my switch to play NSO N64!
I read some reviews on eBay that all said putting it into All Star mode made it 100% flawless. Worst case scenario it doesn’t work, then I’m only out $35 bucks so either way!
Thanks for reviewing this!
You’re welcome! Only a few others have commented about trouble connecting to the switch, FWIW mines still working fine.
Thanks for this review, I'll be purchasing the Saffrun
3:29 Lmaoooo that joke got me love your review has some flavor and that you opened up the insides up and even did some circut wizardry! You truly are a PRO! excellent work subscribed!
Thanks! I like to add the occasional gag to keep it light
That Liu Kang test is fairly ingenious... I like you!
Update 26/06/2023
They’re back in stock!
Just got mine in the mail recently and played with it a bit, definitely worth the cost over trying to get a second nso controller. So glad i found this, i needed a second controller and didnt want to spend 50 on a brawler 64 that wasnt even the original design :(
The instruction manual was pretty good for telling how to connect to the switch. I loved getting an extra stick, i didnt realize when you pointed it out in video so was pretty excited. I agree it feels slightly more squishy, but overall not dissimilar. I compared it to my NSO controller and its just slightly lighter, the plastic feels the same as my nso controller did when new (my original N64 controller was a hand-me-down so i never really held new ones as a kid since my dad didnt trust me not to break them) like, if you put a box over my hands with this controller in my hands, i might think its a bit weird but probably wouldn't notice too much just because of how well it controls.
I’m glad you found it to be just as good as I did. I’m with you- if I was blinded, apart from not being able to ride the stick’s gate, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference to an OEM controller
Such a good review, thanks!
Thanks!
Recently got one for emulation and I think it's great.
When I test the stick using the same controller test ROM, I get near identical to OEM range. Surprising, as most sticks are overblown and square.
Only problem I had was while switching between "modes" I think I somehow partially bricked it. But was lucky and found firmware to fix it.
Interesting. Where did you find the FW? I couldn’t find anything
Sorry, TH-cam must not have allowed my reply to go through because of the Google Drive link.
But I found the firmware link on an Ebay listing.
Huh interesting. I’ll sift through some more listings but so far hasn’t shown anything
Gracias por este review ❤
Gracias!
To sync the controller with the receiver, there is a button on the receiver you have to press and then hit reset on the controller. I tried pressing start but it wouldn't connect that way. You press start to wake up the controller from sleep mode
I've noticed nobody ever tests the biggest problem areas with these controllers. Mainly that the sticks sometimes skip steps along the way and it causes certain fast movements to not work. The easiest ways to test are to make sure you can double backflip in Dolphin Park in Wave Race, Smash Attack consistently in Smash Bros, and Spin Attack consistently and repeatedly in a loop in OoT/MM. Every third party controller I've ever tried has failed these stick tests.
Thanks for that feedback, I wasn’t aware of these specific tests. If I revisit the controller with the beta N64 Mister FPGA core I’ll look into those
@@MarcoRetro316 Cool, looking forward to it if/when that comes!
2:56 That's very common with most game controllers. You'll get used to it. (If only clicky and tactile +Control Pads became more commonplace...)
How would you compare the joy stick to the tribute 64? I find the tribute v1 is the go-to n64 controller, what’s your opinion?
I don’t mind the tribute, I also have the v1 and its shorter stick feels a little looser but has the right level of sensitivity. I just really love the OG form factor for any controller
Awesome video thanks! I have a question regarding storage. If a person were to play a few hours but go potentially a couple weeks/months before using again, will that have any negative effects on the battery?
Thanks! I wouldn’t think there’d be negative effects on the battery as long as it’s not completely depleted. I have my wireless controllers plugged into a 10 input USB charger and I set a smart switch to charge them twice a week overnight. Out of sight out of mind
@MarcoRetro316 cool thanks for getting back to me. Do you run your smart switch to charge even if they haven't been used? If I go weeks without playing again, should I charge it in between?
@guillotinebeard yes I have them on even if not used, I’d rather they’re ready to go and don’t really think about the potential wear on the batteries. If ever needed it’s very easy to swap out a replacement
@MarcoRetro316 very good thanks a million!
3:30 😂
As a kid this wireless control woulda changed alotta game time knock downs cause of cord
I definitely could’ve used a wireless controller growing up on the master system. The amount of times my it froze my progress when someone walked passed and tripped on the cord…
Nice review. I'm finding aiming difficult on Goldeneye, is there a way to reduce the sensitivity of the stick please?
Thanks! What platform sure you playing on?
@@MarcoRetro316 Hi, I'm playing on the Switch N64 online.
@DanielFlood-hj4by I ask because the MisterFPGA N64 core has been made to compress the sticks analog range so that it better matches the original. I’m not sure Nintendo would’ve altered the classic controller’s sticks sensitivity though. It could just be the controller itself that feels sensitive. You could try and calibrate the stick in the ‘Controllers and Sensors’ settings menu. It may not help but it’s worth a try
@@MarcoRetro316 Thanks I will give that a try.
Another question. When you say you CANT use rumble and memory pack at the same time. How does that translate into your experience as you're playing a game? Do you have to get up and walk to the receiver to insert and remove the memory pack in between gameplay so that the rumble will work? Or is there a switch to turn one or the other off for a second?
You can leave the memory pak plugged in and you need to choose between rumble or memory by toggling the switch on the receiver. Once you turn on the console the switch doesn’t do anything and you need to unplug the receiver, toggle the switch and re-plug it to change functions. Most games look for a memory pak in player 1 port only so plugging the pak into a second controller will only work for some games. Pretty much if it’s a game I need to save then I’ll put the receiver into memory mode and leave it, and if it’s a casual play session then rumble mode
@marcoretro your an awesome youtuber, , i hope you havent just resticted yourself to gaming, i hope you get 1m subs,, good luck
That’s very high praise, thank you! I do love to make Neapolitan woodfire pizza so that might be for another channel one day
*Would it be possible to swap the membranes and buttons from the oem controller to this one , to minimize the pressure required for the buttons to work*
I didn’t test every single button but I assume you could as long as the membrane footprint is the same. It’s more trouble than it’s worth IMO and the little extra effort to press the buttons is negligible and only noticeable if you directly compare to an OEM controller
It doesn't look like you can get a Saffun controller here in the UK and Amazon Australia doesn't ship to the UK. That's a real shame as it looks like a viable alternative for the hard to get NSO N64 controller
Does it come up in a fresh search instead of the Aus links?
@@MarcoRetro316 Just doesn't register on Amazon UK site. It looks like I could get it from the US and the postage isn't ridiculous (I'm looking at you Analogue)
I’ve just bought 2 on Amazon Global for £60
I couldn’t find them anywhere else that shipped to the uk
I have some basic questions. How do you know when it’s fully charged and/or dead? Is there an on/off switch or button on the controller?
I’ve never let it go completely flat so I don’t know if you get a warning flash. While it’s charging, the first red LED blinks very slowly, then the light stays on when it’s fully charged. It otherwise puts itself to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity so there’s no on/off button, and you turn it on with the start button and it starts looking for the receiver
nice video, 4 thumbs up from aust
Cheers mate!
I've been so disappointed by Bluetooth controllers over the years that I simply tuned out from wireless altogether. But I came to watch the video because it's you, and when I heard "2.4GHz", I got intrigued. Yes, F the N64 wireless from Nintendo, tit's never in stock, I tuned out as well. And F that weird ass controller with the useless handle, now that's some wacky stuff.
I love that stick there, I have a generic one here (wired) with that same stick and it's awesome. I know it's not like the OG, but man, I still love it. The d-pad was trash, and yes, it does matter for Mortal Kombat, but I swapped it with an original from a broken controller and it became my go-to pad.
And I laughed my ass off big time when you mentioned the dreaded aspect ratio police - they're out there patrolling, man! Watch out! I too indulge in Mario Kart 64 widescreen, all the time. It's my favorite Mario Kart entry. Too bad Mario 64 slows down with it on, last I cheeked.
With those ugly bulky receivers, my solution for elegance is to use a controller extension, run it down and under the console and hide them out back. Anyway, another banger video as usual! Thanks for sharing.
I’m team 2.4Ghz all the way. Bluetooth connections get disrupted from my own feet getting in the way if I’m reclined. Glad the aspect ratio police came off light heartedly. I didn’t think to use extensions going to the back and hidden. I’m sure they’d be fine but always worries me keeping all of them plugged in when I’m only needing 1 controller in case the receivers are collectively drawing excessive current. Probably negligible but I modified my rumble pack to power from the controller without needing batteries. I figured Nintendo would’ve done that themselves if they deemed it safe enough. Thanks heaps for checking out the video and dropping in.
@@MarcoRetro316 Same here, 2.4GHz when wireless, but personally, I've been going down the wired route for a long time now, because there's a problem with wireless you have lots of consoles and controllers.
Sometimes it takes a while for me to revisit a console, and I have a lot of controllers in boxes, as I collected controllers only before getting back into consoles. Anyway, whenever I get to play another console after I beat a game, any wireless controllers I have are dead by then, as I have no time to babysit all the wireless controllers in boxes to keep them charged. In other words, I'm always having to charge them when I use them, so I decided, why bother then, I'll just stick with the wired controllers then.
Yes, I avoid leaving anything plugged in, and that includes consoles, because on some of them, like my N64 and SCPH-5903 PlayStation, the PSU stays warm even when the console is off. And as a fellow owner of BVM/PMVs, I always unplug them, especially if the tally light isn't working. I have the same deal with the battery free rumble pak, I was just told you can only have one at the time though, I'm sure you're aware of that anyway. I only have one to avoid any mishaps, not sure if plugging two damages your N64 somehow.
I use my old extension cables with wireless N64 controllers so I don't have to go all the way to the TV to switch between memory and rumble.
@@h8GW Now you're working smart. :)
Get an n64 controller extension cord for your dongle! 👌🏻 I got one so I can close the lid on my Mario n64 cabinet but it’ll help with sag and save you if you’re playing with one wired controller and the console is pulled off the table.. I’d imagine if it falls on that dongle you’re screwed.
Great advice!
@@MarcoRetro316 thanks I figured it would help someone I bought just one extension to try and no lag, get a 4 pack; individually they’re a ripoff.
Question, if you have 4 of them plugged in to console at once, is there a good way to tell the dongles apart? Or is each one identical?
I only have one to test with, but if I plug it into player 2 with another controller in player 1, then the first red LED light on the controller still lights up. The red LED lights on the receiver and controllers will go from blinking to solid red once you press the start button to synchronise them so that is one way to tell which one is synchronised to which receiver. If you had four of them though, I’d probably do the old fashion sticker labels on each receiver and controller
@@MarcoRetro316 I was thinking the same thing. Probably just grab tiny colored stickers like little circular dots or something just to match the colors. Maybe go with the classic N64 colors Red, Yellow, Green, Blue.
Just sharpie on the fake controller meomory pak with your name (and if you own multiple, what number) and do the same on the back of the receiver.
Sharpie can be easily erased by IPA, anyways.
Looking for information about using this Controller with RetroArch on Steam... any setup guidance appreciated. I have it connected and what not but the Z button isn't responding... possible Remapping situation? Newish so just looking for some guidance to get it right
I don’t have steam but I just downloaded RA to test if mine works. I plugged in the USB receiver where it connected as usual with only 1 LED and the controller wouldn’t show in the MS Game Controller app. Then held Start and B for a few seconds until the first and second LED’s on the controller were illuminated - this switches it into X or D input mode, I’m not sure which one it was in but this made it useable. Then I disconnected the USB receiver and reconnected it and the MS Game Controller application now reads it as an 8bitdo FC30 Pro. I tested with Mupen64 in RA and the Z button works
Could u not have used the NTSC version of Mario kart 64? I get that you’re from a PAL region, but you could have used an NTSC console on an LCD 60hz tv
I don’t follow if this is a question or a rhetoric. This is the NTSC version of Mario Kart 64 played in 60Hz, the display tech is irrelevant.
Does it recognize it as a n64 controller on switch without having to remap buttons or just a regular usb controller?
You need to turn on pro controller wired communication in the controller and sensor settings so I believe it’s thinking it’s a pro controller
@@MarcoRetro316 ahh thanks o though it would work just like the oem n64 nintendo controller
I press the home bottom while pairing, now it won’t work. Can some one help me with that?
I have this controllers and they worked great, but now they don't sync to the USB receiver 😢
Both of mine are still running strong. My condolences 😢
Update 20/06/2023
Looks like they are all out of stock. I messaged the seller they said they should be back in stock in a week.
So when im done playing the only way to shut the controller off is to unplug the usb receiver?
The controller will automatically turn off after several minutes of inactivity
@@MarcoRetro316 ok thanks!
Is this controller recognized by the switch as an n64 controller, or does it just show up as a pro controller?
AFAIK a Pro controller
Is the thumb grip for the joystick rubber/silicon, or plastic like the original N64 controller?
Also, has anyone tested the wireless range on this controller? I sit about 10 feet from my console and I know some of these cheaper controllers lose connectivity after about 6 or so feet.
The new stick is plastic. I’m also about 10 feet from my console and haven’t had any connection issues. The Amazon listing actually states connection up to 33 feet
@@MarcoRetro316 Thanks so much for the info, man.
I bought a similar controller by Safefun and have spent the afternoon trying to get the RumbplePak to work with project64 (or anything on PC). If anyone knows how to get the rumblepak to work on the controller with the built-in rumblepak, let me know.
I’ve never used Project64 but when I searched Google, it seems you may need to download the N-Rage plugin to enable
I don't know why, but I can't connect this controller to project 64, any reason why?

My controller I just bought won’t connect to the switch. I’ve followed the instructions and tried what was said in this video but nothing has worked
Someone else commented with this issue. This was my reply but by the sounds of it they couldn’t get it to work. If you still have trouble I’d contact the seller. They have a video on the eBay listing to show pairing but also make sure to turn on the controller option in settings first:
I had to reset the controller, then insert the receiver and held the receiver’s pairing button which should make the LED flash faster, then press start on the controller. After that the red LED lights on both receiver and controller went from flashing to solid red. You might need to turn on something in the switch controller settings first. Going off a photo from the eBay listing: system settings>controller and sensors>pro controller and wired communication> select ‘ON’
I did go to the settings and switch that on. When I press the sync button and start 1 light turns on but it never flashes like everyone says it should. I’ll try finding the eBay video
I’d try just pressing the button, or holding it, try resetting the controller and starting again. That’s as much troubleshooting I can advise otherwise if it’s not flashing it could be a faulty receiver. Hope you can get it sorted
How do I reset the controller (very technologically naive) I’ve tried taking it out and in again. It’s registering there’s a USB device for the switch but just won’t connect
@@sam-ez3zk there’s a reset button on the top left of the controller. When you press it the 1st LED light on the controller should slowly flash. Try doing that first and then plug in the receiver

How long does it take to charge?
The Amazon listing states 2.5hrs from flat to full. I’ve never ran mine all the way to 0% and is usually at 100% in about an hour
How do you pair with N64??
You would press the reset button on the controller, power the console with the receiver plugged in, hold the sync button on receiver until the red light flashes fast, then press start on the controller and it should pair. If that fails then try holding start on the controller until the controllers led flashed faster. Make sure the controller is charged, other than that it should be a pretty straightforward process
kinda sad that i live in the eu so its only 50hz and flickers very much

Does it work with firestick?
I’m not sure as it would need to be compatible with the usb receiver’s X/D input mode at the very least
Too bad they don’t have a retailer in Europe, shipping and customs will be even more expensive than the controller itself
Damn. Is there no European-specific listing?
@@MarcoRetro316Nothing that I have found so far, if I can’t find it somewhere in Europe I might just get the 8BitDo stick for my worn out OEM controllers since I have heard that the sensitivity on those are pretty good.
It was a great review of the controller, wish everyone tested controllers this extensively. Subscribed!
Edit: I just found a 2 pack on Amazon that was about $17 shipping with no import fees, will snag those!
I still haven’t put the 8bitdo replacement stick into my OEM controller I featured in this video but I’ve also heard good things. It’s more of a GC style but I’ve heard the sensitivity is on point.
Thanks for subscribing and glad you found a listing with reasonable shipping. Hope you enjoy them!
Does it work with steamdeck
I have no first hand experience to answer but if it’s like any other controller on windows, if it’s in X-input mode (Holds start and B for a few seconds) it should connect. Provided you can also remap buttons
8bitdo conversion works wonderful and cheaper too
Definitely cheaper than the official NSO controller and cool to mod one of the nicer clear shell controllers. Costs a little more than the aftermarket wireless controller though unless it’s currency conversion bumping the price up here
Will this work on mobile?
I cannot guarantee whatsoever if it will. The listing states USB-C receiver is compatible with Android so you’d need a USB-A female to USB-C male adapter to try. The controller is 2.4GHz wireless so it won’t connect via Bluetooth
E no Switch N64 Online!?
If I didn’t have OG hardware then it would appeal to me
I bought one of these based on your video. When I play Mario kart and drift, the controller locks up and I'm stuck continually crashing into wall
I never had that happen to me, I was drifting fine and nothings come up a week later. If it were me I’d troubleshoot to make sure it’s fully charged and see if distance to the console has any effect. Otherwise I’d be requesting an exchange or refund. Hopefully it’s an isolated issue and that you get it sorted
@@MarcoRetro316 ok exchanging for new one. Great video by the way!!!
Did you end up getting a working replacement
@@MarcoRetro316 I got replacement but was doing same thing. Playing with the input settings on project 64 made it a lot better. But now I think the usb dongle is going bad. Getting constant disconnects. I want to like the controller but having these issues. Have you heard anything about a firmware update?
Ah I see, I didn’t know the issue was initially with an emulator. Mines still running fine, sucks the replacement’s USB receiver hasn’t held up. Another viewer said they found the FW link from an eBay listing. I’ve looked everywhere but couldn’t find it. I reached out to the seller and they were very responsive to my questions until I asked them about the FW
Bro I bought one it won’t even connect to the switch I think there a scam
Try these Steps:
1. Using an official Nintendo Controller, go to [System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication] and make sure it's switched [ON]
2. Plug the USB Receiver into the Switch Dock and wait for it to start flashing.
3. Press and Hold the [SYNC] Button on the Receiver until it starts blinking faster.
4. Press the [RESET] Button on the Top (or Back if it's lying down) of the Controller, the 1st LED o nthe Controller should flash.
5. Press the [Start] Button on the Controller and wait for the 1st LED to stay lit.
6. Hold the [Start] and [A] Buttons on the Controller for about 3 seconds, until the 2nd and 4th LEDs light up. This turns on 'Mode C', telling the Switch that the Controller is a Switch Pro Controller.
Even the positive reviews on the american amazon listing for this controller note that it stops working right after a week or 2. A lot of people cant get it synced at all. At the end of the day its a cheap knockoff controller lol. At this point the official switch controller is better stocked, but other than that you cant really do better than the latest brawler64 bluetooth nso edition. They finally put rumble in it, duel motor rumble at that lol
If only the analog stick had the correct irregular octagon shaped gate
this PoS wont pair and wont charge.
