    Memories, I was born and raised in SF. When I was a child my Mom would take me downtown to where my Aunt Marie worked So I could visit her on the weekend. She lived in San Bruno, so commuted by train. We caught the train at Third and Townsend. The trains were all steam back then. It is one of my favorite memories.

    Very fine filming job, quite realistic! Felt like I was on that train. Wish some of the other cab videos were of this
    quality! This film is entertaining, and more importantly, historically significant, as in the future people will refer
    to this video and say, "So that's what that ROR from Gilroy to SF looked like!"

    Best thing about riding Caltrain is you can drink booze, beer or wine on-board, BYOB, of course. The Safeway at 4th and King SF is a convenient stock up point for charging down the Peninsula. Just keep your dirty feet off the seats!

    So many changes. As a native San Franciscan I'm familiar with much of the line from the Sp days. Back i 1988 I videotaped most of the San Jose to San Francisco run on a mid-day train. A railfan could film through the window of the front door back then, just like your footage. The line was basically unchanged from the old SP days. Bayshore Yard was still active. The Mission Bay wye was still there, and certainly there were more trackside customers. For about a year I had an apartment at Hayward Park. The old center siding was still in place in 1980. Tonight I played my video on my office television while matching your video on my computer monitor. I had to freeze frame or fast forward to keep pace as best I could. Lots of memories. Thank you.

      Tony Johnson You’re very welcome ! I’m very glad you enjoyed the video ! I additionally genuinely enjoyed reading your comment. It’s always a pleasure hearing from folks about how the trains have shaped their lives and how the railroad itself has evolved or remained the same throughout the years.

    It was fun to see the entire line. Way back in the 1970's, I used to ride the SP commuters between San Carlos and San Francisco. It was a great way to get to work because my office was within walking distance of the station when it was at Third and Townsend.

    Wow! I've missed so much.. I wish I could have been part of that. When I used to ride Caltrain on a daily basis, the furthest you could go was the Tamien station and before that only San Jose. It's difficult to think Caltrain would travel all the way to Gilroy or beyond. I guess they're expanding the system.

    • @Trainlover1995
      @Trainlover1995 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They've been going to Gilroy since 1992, and there were plans to expand as far south as Salinas, with branchline services to Hollister, Santa Cruz, and Monterey, but the plan now is for the Capitol Corridor to extend to Salinas.

      One thing I hate about those horns is that they always use only one horn chime in Caltrain and not both of them on the p2. Metrolink has the same type of horn here in SoCal and they barely use one horn and use all both of them. Also it the air pressure low on those horns cuz I think the low pressure is causing the engineer to use only one horn?

      @@d64tv06 The Gallery cars all seem to have issues with the high note (Number 3 bell) not sounding. The horns on these cab cars are mounted in an open box under the pilot above the rail. Dirt, grease, and other yuckies get in the horn and cause the number 3 bell to go silent. Why the number 3 bell always seems to go before the number 2 bell, I don't know.

  • @caltrain_acefoamer907
    @caltrain_acefoamer907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing I gotta say is the engineers crossing sequence is a bit dangerous due to him or her either not paying attention of the crossings coming. The horn blasts are not separated and are not for the full 15 seconds via the FRA rule. Some of the honks aren’t even the full 2 long blasts of the horn, 1 short blast and 1 blast.

    Nice job, thanks!
    It would be nice, next time, to first show us the "front"of the train, in this case it's the rear. I was curious, for instance, how streamlined that end of the train is. From the wind noise, it seems it isn't.
    Also it seemed unusual to have no engine sound, running "backwards." Cool, in a way, like a TGV except for the speed. Looks like it does get up close to 100, though. Maybe 90?
    I didn't mind the shaking, and turned the sound down due to the loud horn & bell. Maybe next time they'll let you clean their window for them! Haha!
    Interesting how the pax trains come to such a quick stop at the stations. I used to be on freights, and we had to be more gradual. More tonnage, and no disk brakes, I guess. Also the brake pads weren't maintained by the taxpayer!
    Thanks again!

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KutWrite Thank you ! Yes, this video was filmed from the CabCar end of the Caltrain trainset away from the locomotive (push mode). Typically the vestibule window of the CabCar is the only publicly accessible place to film the track view. As far as I know, Caltrain is limited to 79 MPH for its top speed, although its equipment is fully capable to handle higher speeds in addition to the infrastructure. Glad you enjoyed the video !

    • @TransitRoutes
      @TransitRoutes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dam, I want to film this for myself but I live in San Francisco so I would have to get on the bus at 1am to arrive at gilroy at 6:20am, hopefully not miss the 6:28 and pray that either the 6:28 or the 7:06 are not bombadier cars.

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Transit Routes Yeah. When I filmed this I had to leave Sacramento rather early too just to get here in time. If I am correct, typically Caltrain #217 is a Bombardier set and the other two sets are Gallery cars (#221 & #227). Otherwise, #227 could also be a Bombardier set, but #221 is almost always a Gallery set since it is a 'Limited' train and not a 'Baby Bullet' train.

This device is usually engaged to the top of the rail if a train or any rolling stock is left stationary and to prevent it from rolling past the ‘Derail’ and fouling another track. In this video though, the ‘Derail’ was not engaged (device was clear of the rail to allow for train movement).

    Why does the sign at Gilroy say Derail?

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan Udasco Typically railroads will have a device called a “derail” attached to the track as a measure to protect the track against any trains moving on that particular track; whether it be for other trains, maintenance personnel, or a dead end track, etc. The sign signifies its location and alerts train crews of the derail and if it may be engaged.

    • @BrentNguyen46

      Yes. Unfortunately though, the Capitol Corridor and Altamont Commuter Express trains currently do not have a publicly accessible window directly out the front of the CabCar to film from like Caltrain’s Gallery Cars. It is currently unfeasible unless granted permission to film from the crew area. I would’ve definitely jumped at the possibility if it were possible for sure though.

    Thanks for showing the entire video of the line from Gilroy to San Francisco. Very nice train ride. However I feel that there are too many stations the train stops at on the way. It stops for two minutes to five minutes at each station which could have been edited. from the video.

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anmol Mehta Glad you enjoyed the video ! Yes, the train does stop at a significant number of stations, mainly since it is a “Limited” train. From my experience, I’ve had mixed suggestions regarding trimming excess footage versus inclusion of the entire length of the trip; although more individuals have suggested keeping the full footage for added realism and an approximately real life experience. I usually just go off viewer suggestions as each subsequent video is uploaded.

    Why are the metrolink cars say caltrain

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A few years back Caltrain purchased the Bi-Level cars from Metrolink to accommodate the substantial increase in ridership and to alleviate overcrowding on their trains. Caltrain to date has yet to repaint the cars to their livery and still retain the Metrolink paint scheme.

    Y did this train skip Palo Alto?

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Noah Alonzo This train is running as Caltrain #221, a ‘Limited’ train which does not stop at all stations in order to accommodate specific ridership patterns and improve efficiency. Limited trains only run during rush hours to minimize station stops, but not to the extent to that of Baby Bullet trains; hence the reason why the train’s schedule skips the Palo Alto station.

    • @foreigncarfan493
      @foreigncarfan493 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BrentNguyen46 same for millbrae. Millbrae is an important station, so it's weird that some trains don't stop there

    • @peninsula_sub
      @peninsula_sub 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If all trains stopped at Millbrae and Palo Alto under the current scheduling pattern there would be severe bottlenecking and delays because of train congestion. Baby Bullet Express trains with higher priority are following right behind these specific trains and it would not be logistically feasible. If that is not complicated enough all trains stopping at Millbrae and Palo Alto have 2 to 3 minutes of padding built into the schedule so late trains can make up time.
