Just in case anyone asks, the reason why the entirety of the line to Gilroy was not electrified is because it is owned by Union Pacific, while everything from Tamien to San Francisco is owned by Caltrain, allowing it to be electrified on their own terms.
I think Caltrain should try to convince Union Pacific to electrify the the section to Gilroy. Unless Caltrain plans on getting the Stadler Flirts (hydrogen electric or diesel electrics) as well in the long run…….
@@beavermuffin as far as I want Electrification to happen, I don't see why UP would like to agree to that. At least because they especially profit from double stacks which can operate at either diesel or India's high electrification... Which again would require new locomotives in the first place plus Caltrain is under normal height wire. In short, freight companies are only focused on gaining money, even if electricity could potentially save them tons of money
At 18:34 tracks cross over the Old US 101, Monterey Highway, to the west side of the highway. Going northward, the train goes through Coyote Valley, of which much of it is off limits to development, thanks to preservation organizations.
The plan is to add 1-2 new tracks for three total in the corridor between Gilroy and San Jose, two electrified for HSR and Caltrain and one non-electrified for UP and Amtrak. That probably won’t start until CAHSR begins construction on its Merced-San Jose segment, which likely won’t be until the early 2030s (depends on when and how quickly it’s funded).

@@ThisisGabe120 thanks a lot. There’s a good chance. I’ll see the LRQ 50 is. I’ll be in Burlingame or San Mateo on Monday evening. I take it September 21 is still the cut over to electric date.
The tracks From CP Lick to Gilroy belong to UP and they dont want it electrified. For the same reason that main track one from CP Coast in Santa Clara to Tamien doesn't have any catenary.

Great video!
What are the interlockings between Gilroy and Tamien?
I think that there are only 4, 1 in Gilroy, 2 in Morgan hill, and 1 near Blossom hill
One is coyote
A much better video in 4K!

why did I think the conductor said “Now Arriving San Joaquins” 💀😂😂😂
Probably because the audio didn't get quite clear enough on the speaker.
Just in time for the cab ride on the Caltrain and some great scenery

Will Caltrain be running electric trains on the weekends in test runs quite a bit? Even during the week.

There needs to be expansion of this line to Pajaro, Castroville and Salinas.
I'm surprised Caltrain didn't extend overhead catenary all the way to Gilroy!!
Very few trains per day, so it wouldn’t make sense
