Great video as always!
I love the "waffle" It makes for a very relaxing journey. Thank You so much for these videos, I'm going to watch all of them in sequence
Excellent videos, love them.
Cheers Dale.
I really love the dusk setting..... ...cracking video cheers Dale ❤
best time to film, morn or night
Thanks Dale for another fascinating video, informative as ever. I note you say you’re going to Bangkok to ‘Let your hair down’. I think you and I would both have a similar problem in letting our hair down 😂 👨🏽🦲
Thank you dale for making me less nervous of the tube 😊
Oh, Dr. Asperger, why do I love these videos so much?
Why? because you have good taste Sir!
Great video as always, looking forward to seeing New York & Thailand videos if you're able to 😊.
Hi Dale,
I'm a member of staff on the East end of the line. Love your vids mate. I was on your train the other night but was in a hurry😂. Next time I'll be sure to say hello😁
Thanks Dale. I’m saving this for my 55” flat screen tv and surround sound for the fully immersive experience later this evening. Great videos! Keep it up mate.
I enjoy your videos way more than I thought. The Piccadilly Line was the line of my teenage years, although it was just a means of getting to the London steam sheds. In the view of Cockfosters Depot you can make out the houses in Westpole Avenue, one of which was lived in by a railway enthusiast who had old signs and number plates from GWR locos bolted to his garden wall just feet away from your trains.
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but their pearls ain't free
:)
"What i really want is control too ring me and say - driver put the train away"... That cracked me up!! 🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant as always Dale - Thank you & look forward to the next one 👍
Dale "they came on harder than expected"
Me "ooh matron.. what is this carry on London Underground" 😂
I would love to hear Sid James on the front of a train with that laugh of his 🤣🤣
Dale, thank you once again for your interesting video. Happy driving
11:55 Seems that the digital platform clocks don't agree with each other! 😂
That’s the railway for you 🤣
Thank you, Dale. I don't get up to that end of the line.
As a fellow BA flyer, I look forward to your NYC trip.
A nice distraction from England match....😂😂😂😂😂
...and not just because im Irish 😜😜😜😜😜
Great video Dale
whoever replied i cant see it
ps engerland were rubbish too
Even though Southgate was a cheeky reminder 😂
@@Lisbonized plus Dale heart my comment then took it off, maybe maybe not hahahaha
Didin't England just get lucky?
@@camotech1314 they got lucky in the qualifying stages! 😂
Those videos of unusual movements like sidings are always interesting together with your commentary
Nice video Dale. Greetings from Holland 😁👍
another great video I seem to learn something new every time looking forward to the next one
Nice one Dale
These journeys remind me of the late 70s when I worked at STC New Southgate (by ECML). I used Cockfosters and Arnos Grove for my trip back to KX and then Leeds #goodolddays
I truly love your videos, you manage to make each and every one interesting and a joy to watch.
I'm a country bumpkin and don't visit London too often and have always felt nervous using the 'tube'. Watching your videos has given me an awareness that I had previously lacked, I'm sure my next trip to London (late July) using the 'tube' will be a far more relaxing affair 😏😏
Thank you for sharing your videos with us 👍🏻
Always loved the fact that you can see the portals from the platform at Southgate
Hi Dale, fantastic commentary and great video, no mater how many times you travel over the line, it is always interesting. Stay safe.
Just want to say thank you, Dale. I love all of your videos ❤
Great video dale
Love the view towards Southgate!
Love these videos, Dale.
love your commentary. great video thanks
Thanks Dale...very enjoyable. All the best.
Great video, Dale. Many thanks.
Thanks Dale for the video, again learned a few things. Please keep the vids coming... till next time !
Brilliant mate
Love your vids mate. Thks!
Great little video, Dale. Really enjoyed. Cheers.
What a welcome surprise, lovely video :)
Nice one dale great video again
Thanks Dale. Just found your channel. Takes me back to around 1961 (I was about 5) and I used to drive the 30s stock from Wood Green to Finsbury Park !! With my dad who worked as a guard in the 50s . Really enjoy the videos.
Some great memories. 👍👍
PS im 69 now and dad no longer with us.😢
You used to drive the train when you were 5? Impressive!
I am sorry to hear that
Great Ride
Had to wait until Monday night to get the full half hour to watch this one with a distraction this week! Great commentary as always.
Really enjoy your videos. Train transit, and airplane Nerd from the Rocky Mountains!
I was out with one of your colleagues and TM’s yesterday. Wonderful bunch at Cockfosters!
Cheers mate.
Thanks again Dale…..was looking forward to a new posting🎉
Great video Dale, again massive respect to you mate for your professionalism, im sure you would make a great trainer, job for the future
Interesting discrepancy between the digital clocks at Cockfosters 🙃
If you're looking at a new Camera, the DJI equivilants are getting a good reputation
Thank you I shall look in to it
Loving the videos, always wanted to be a tube driver but unfortunately I live up north.... I was well chuffed when Train SIM ( on Xbox) had the bakerloo line on it.. and really enjoy and find it quite realistic..
Have you ever tried any commercial Train or Tube simulators (not the professional ones on tfl) ?? And how realistic do you find them??
I'm sure there's videos of them on TH-cam
I’m not one for video games so I have never played the train sims. 5 days a week on the front of a train is enough 🤣
Regards your NYC trip, you can take the Amtrak Acela from New York Penn Station to either Boston or Washington DC. Both cities are worth a visit. Several visits in fact. If you travel to Boston you will experience the networks fastest line and a good deal of history at the end of the line. If you visit DC, upon exiting Union Station you will be at the footsteps of the US Capitol and a stone's throw from the greatest free show on the planet, namely the museums that compromise the Smithsonian. Start at the Air & Space museum where America keeps some of its best toys!! DC is not marketed as a tourist destination but it really is a hidden jem.
Dale I am surprised the company don't have a CCTV camera recording ahead to prove signal changes in front of you to prove you are innocent.
It shows up on the signal system. So they can play it back to confirm what the signal did. But I do agree cameras would be a good idea for any incidents
Another great video as always, informative and interesting. One thing I've not seen out all your videos is I've not seen you go through a washer, is that done by depot staff or do drivers like yourself go through leaving depots. Keep up the great work uploading content
I have filmed going through the wash before. Here is the link Ever wanted to know how we wash the trains? Stabling the train at Cockfosters. Piccadilly line

You should drive the first 24' stock train because it would be a realy good video. Another good video idea would be an Arsenal FC home game video (except the seasons over rn). Also, I will be at the day of the final 73' stock, so I would love you to drive that to. :D
I will be driving the new 24 stock once they arrive and I have had the training
I just discovered your videos Dale, these are amazing, thank you so much for sharing! Have you ever made a video with a head-mounted camera? I think it'd be super cool to see that perspective, if possible!
I’ve not. I don’t thing that would look very profesional
@@dalecharmantravels8057 I gotcha, I kinda just meant to be able to see what you are doing!
When you brake before a station, do you start with a harder brake and then loosen the brake at the last meters or the other way round? If I remember right, I also recall you saying that you might put it to neutral between the two braking phases.
On the overnight sleeper, maybe there will be some tickets becoming available as sudden change in MPs in Scotland
Hi Dale, watching this at home after DJing for my crowd 0215 Sunday morning. Love your videos, thanks for sharing a unique insight your job!
Another great video, thanks Dale and looking forward to the next one. When the new trains come into service will all the old trains be replaced at the same time?
Always enjoy your videos and it's slowly teaching me your signaling systems over there.
Hope you can film more and keep us updated on the construction of those new sidings near Cockfosters.
I would enjoy seeing them slowly built.
You have mentioned the NEW SIGNAL'S for the new trains coming they just seem to be a version of a DWALF SIGNAL or are they something totally different?
No they are just contacting signals. They are lower as the visibility on the new trains is reduced
Thanks for the upload as always! When you swap ends at a terminus, how common is it to find issues on the train (cleaning issues, possible vandalism etc)? Do you have to hold the train until it's rectified? I feel sorry for the staff who have to deal with the inevitable on Friday/Saturday nights!
It really depends what the issue is. So if it’s bodily fluids then it will be held or out of service until a cleaner can rectify it. If it’s some thing that could cause injury then the train would be removed from service
Another very interesting video, Dale. Many thanks. The slow progress at the beginning was annoying for you and the passengers but made it very interesting for us. As always, your commentary helps us understand everything we’re seeing.
I watch your videos in “episodes” - a few stations at a time - so I don’t yet know how this journey unfolds 😀
@@TikTokBrian I won’t spoil the fun then 🤣🤣
Thank you for the video :) Question, have you had anyone recognize you from youtube during work to say hello?
I have. 3 or 4 people have come and said hi
I don't know if you've already answered this Dale, but do you have maximum permitted driving/duty hours, and minimum breaks? Great video as always, you get the commentary just right.
So it’s a max of 8 and a half hrs a day. Max 4.15 driving time before a break. We have to have a minimum of 30 mins break
19:45 - Or worse, depending on the track layout, train positioning and signal wiring, it could even show something as outrageous as red-over-green. Extinguishing the repeater altogether is just a much safer design; you don't need to know what is going on behind the red signal anyway since you don't have the authority to go there.
They say the most important signal on the whole line is the one in front of you
Loved Southgate, great memories of going to a school in that area, it’s playing fields backed onto the tunnel coming into Southgate eastbound/ leaving westbound, used to throw stones at the trains on our break, and hauled into the headmasters office in the afternoon as the drivers obviously complained.
Dale im interested in ETS moves special movements I would like to seen in and out of depots movements that kind of stuff
Hello Ben. Apart from going in to Cockfosters depot I don’t do too much depot work. How ever I will try and film them when I can
You were close to where I was at that time! Hilarious! Great video!
Hello, I'd be very interested to understand more about the signalling system, particularly how you know which of two co-located signals is 'home' and 'distant'
I'd be interested to know what you mean when you say home and distant because those words mean different things to different people.
Dale, besides the new starter co-acting signals, already discussed, I felt I was seeing some of the line signals having larger/brighter aspects then I recall. Have there been replacements or was this just an effect of time-of-day and/or camera making the lights seem brighter? Some of the multi-homes (a/b/c etc) seemed brighter also. Greatly enjoying your videos - informative and entertaining. Many thanks!
I can’t say I have noticed any difference in the brightness. Maybe I am just used to them
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Ah thanks Dale. I had read a post on DistrictDave from back in September 2023 that said "Resignalling of the Piccadilly has not yet been funded, this however hasn’t prevented expenditure on new co-acting signals for sighting purposes for the 2024 Stock at nearly every signal." and wondered if further re-signaling had occurred. I also believe I saw some signals close to starter locations that are bagged and X taped. Are those part of future signaling?
@@DrJimi so my understanding is that the new signals are only co-acting signals. They are lower due to visibility issues with the new trains. Although we have not yet had a brief with regards to it all yet. My understanding is there is no funding for a new system hence why we will be driving the 24 stock manually
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Gotcha. Thanks!
You'll probably find a lot of the lamps have been replaced with LED 'bulbs', although I can't confirm that. But that would explain signals appearing brighter than you remember. Even NR's semaphores have LED lamps these days
I recently had a LT museum trip arranged in the restored 1938 stock tube between Oakwood and Acton Town, but the day before we were notified that because of overnight vandalism to the 1938 stock tube the excursion was cancelled, I wondered where the vandals could have had access to this train, at Acton Town where the museum depot is or was it Oakwood?
I’m not sure if it was in Northfields depot or Ealing Common depot
it is strange that at Cockforsters the clocks showed different times
They are just allowing for the curvature of the earth across the platforms. Err.....
@@billseymour-jones3224errrrrrrrrr
I swear that’s mad
Hi Dale, really enjoying your videos, just wondering if you get to drive the same units each turn?
No you don’t drive the same train. Some times you might get the same one 2 days on the trot
The line direction is very confusing at the top end. I assume you know, Dale, but not all viewers might know too, that from Holborn to Cockfosters the general alignment is south to north in reality, but it's officially termed eastbound and (when coming back) westbound, so as to match up with the rest of the Piccadilly Line. In fact the last bit of the line from Oakwood to Cockfosters bends back to the west, so an "eastbound" train is actually travelling in a westwards direction in reality on that stretch of track, and the eastbound exit from the depot is located further west than the westbound exit. (It's a bit like cricket: when you're out on the field you're "in" etc.) So in these summer evening vids a train approaching Cockfosters is heading into the sunset. When I was young the station platforms in this area were actually designated northbound and southbound (at least for passenger purposes, I don't know about drivers) but they changed that over to eastbound and westbound, oh, I think in the early 1970s. I've never been able to discover the actual date.
It can get confusing. Once you are used to it it’s not too bad.
That’s interesting Eastbound from the middle platform at Arnos Grove, normally the middle is for revers heading back west?
Is there still any old 1983 stock at Cockfosters depot? Used to be a few cars.
No there are no old stocks at Cockfosters depot. The middle platform at Arnos does get used a fair bit to travel east. More often than not on my last trip I get put in the middle
Hi Dale: love your videos. I don't think I have heard you explain why the signal is always red at Southgate?
I don’t know why that one is always red. There’s a few like that. That don’t seem to have a reason for it
@@dalecharmantravels8057 ah that would be why you didnt explain it then 😛. Thanks for replying though
11:30 Interesting to see that there are two clocks and that they are about ten seconds different from each other. I wonder if something like that ever causes problems?
Not really. A lot of the clocks are wrong. You can easily make up a little bit of time if the clock you are using is wrong
Are the controls on an underground train more or less the same as on a mainline train?
Hi dale you don’t have to answer this but do you have a model railway ,I’m ex bus driver and train dispatcher and I do and collect buses 😂,take care
I don’t have a model railway 😀
you not as sad as me bud
I’m saying nothing 🤣🤣
Thanks for the cab ride Dale. Great edit. Just one question at 12:35 there are two clocks which display a 10 second difference. Is that intentional?
Agreed - I came to ask this very question.
No they are often wrong or out of sync. One at T5 is several hours behind the rest 🤣
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Lolz! 🤣 Thanks mate. ok, which timepiece do you use to run the train to time then?
Most of the time it’s the Green signal. However at places like Heathrow I just use the clock that I can see from the cab. Unless I know it’s way out
Today is 7/7.Where we never forget the 52 souls died in the underground due to a bombing 🙏
Thoughts and preyers to all those who lost loved ones in that tragic day
When you left Cockfosters, the 2 clocks had slightly different times...Any reason why? Cheers from Texas Dale!
No. The clocks are generally useless on the underground
Nice one dale. I just wanted to ask ,why did they take the points out on the District line local by any means? When you could, could Piccadilly line Trains run down to Richmond and Wimbledon? Can the Piccadilly line also potentially get onto Bakerloo line tracks up to Harrow and Wealdstone?
I can only assume it’s to do with the district running ATO ( although they are still driving manually in theta section). We could have gone to Richmond but not Wimbledon. The tracks for Wimbledon is some where near Earl’s Court. As for the Bakerloo there are no direct places from the pic line. Maybe from one of the other lines. As we could go down the met/northern:vic lines. ( there are points to run on to those lines) I hope that makes sense
7:15 please please film that train if you can🙏🏾😎
Is it difficult to drive a train? Or is it all automatic? ❤
The Piccadilly and Bakerloo are still 100% manually driven. Getting a train to move is easy it’s the stoping in the right place and all the rules and regs that can be hard
@@dalecharmantravels8057 thank you. I love the tube. It is amazing how it runs. Have a good day
Are there any plans to rename Southgate station to Gareth Southgate station for a couple of days like they did in 2018 when we came 4th in the World Cup?
Hi Dale, new to the channel. I have a question, if you are doing at a station and the starter after is red, do you come in slower and more controlled than if that stations starting single was green?
Good evening Dale, big fan of your work! I noticed that on most of the platforms there is a "T" with a cross through it. Could you explain what it is?
That’s to say the tunnel telephone wires and/or telephone are not working. Most have been disconnected on the pic line. Now all trains have radios and we all have hand held radios too
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Thanks a lot!
Hi Dale, If you pass a signal showing red are the trip cocks activated and the brakes applied? Great video as always. Best wishes John
They are yes. All stop signals have a train stop ( in the up position when the signal is red). That will trip the trip cock on the train releasing all the air out of the brakes bringing them on
Hi Dale, can you record the section between Hammersmith and Acton where you stop at Turnham Green?
There is a video of the east bound. I have recorded stopping in the west bound. That should be out next week ( I think )
@@dalecharmantravels8057 👍
...and what is the red object with a white diagonal cross at the platform end?
If that is the red with The letter T and a cross through it. That is to say the tunnel telephone and/wires are not operational
How fast does a tube train go?
The oic line is a max of 45 mph
did it say minor delays due to spad at Southgate and oakwood on thr radio?
today
I wouldn’t have thought so. They don’t say there has been a spad. They say signal issues
What happens with ice on the track and you are coasting then try to stop because of red signals?
It’s similar to driving in the rain. You just have to brake earlier than you would in the dry
Thanks Dale.
Can you clarify, does the rail company you work for operate exclusively on the Piccadilly line, or do they operate other lines too? Just wondering if you have any choice or opportunity to drive other lines, or whether you'd have to change employers?
So I work for London Underground. They run all the underground lines. I could put in a transfer to a different line if I wanted too
Is there no standard as to which side the signals are positioned? Seems like they are on both the left and the right so how do you know which is for you if there are a few together at a platform end?
It’s just experience. It’s easy once you understand the track lay out
Will you be aloud to continue filming when u get the new trains or will you not be allowed due to security reasons being that thay will be new ?
I don’t see any issue with it.
At Signal PM1 (8:12) why do there seem to be two repeaters for signal PM2? Is there any difference between the middle two aspects and the bottom two aspects?
The bottom repeater is a fog repeater. When these were installed they were used only in conditions of poor visibility and would not normally be illuminated. Nowadays they're lit all the time to try to reduce the number of SPADs hence the apparent redundancy.
5:00 Will the new Piccadilly trains be faster? West bound do you add some word to determine if the train is heading to Uxbridge or the Heathrow terminals?
I don’t know what the plan is with the speed of the new trains. I guess the testing will help determine what they can do. Do you mean for the digital voice announcer? If so we use codes for the stations and route
@@dalecharmantravels8057 You said that in your work you call it west and east, 4:46 to delineate the heading. To make clear which of the west bound branches do you add south and north or some other term for Heathrow and Uxbridge?
A question for you, Dale. Not directly related to the video. If your duty (for example) starts with a Cockfosters -> Heathrow run, but the train you are supposed to pick up has gone out of service further up the line, due to a fault or damage, etc, what happens to you?
It depends. They may be able to give you a different train. If it’s cancelled completely then you would sit around and cover the second half ( assuming it’s the first train) if it’s the second half of a duty they may let you go home early if not needed
