  • In this video, I take a completed mahogany guitar body and install a sweet quilted maple guitar top. This body has been in the works for awhile but when I got this piece of maple, I knew it had to be a guitar top.

I'm doing almost this exact project, and plan to use the rounded edge of the top, as the equivalent of binding, visually. The contrast between the quilted maple and (Sapele in my case) should be stunning.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have an old MIJ Squire Strat made of plywood I think. The body is in great shape and the neck is perfect. I thought adding a cap would be a good idea. I might have to find a wood working shop to plane the cap and possibly the body.

a great big thumbs up . invention is the mother to a good bodge and if we don't have the proper tool . just make do with what we have to hand in the shop . and i see you do take great care when your in project mode/mind . that's what that thing between your ears is for.
i'm sure that one day quite soon you will have a successful business.maybe as a electric guitar luthier modifier and upgrade specialist as you've shown in these video's you have the knack and right mindedness and aptitude . you have a honesty and a generous sprite about you that will take you far, and i wish you good luck Jeff.

Very helpful. My tele body is currently 1/4 too thin and I’m in the process of thickening it up with more wood. It’s already cut to a basic tele outline so I’m hesitant about which way to go, cut first or glue then cut.

I actually want to put a back and sides on a tele build and I've been a little unsure about if I need to shave off of the primary body blank by the same amount and how best to do it. I was going to buy that 'planing' bit from stewmac and just patiently use a drill press/sander to do it (still might). Cheers!

Absolutely beautiful end result (as usual). I will admit though.. I think the decision to (rough) cut out the pattern before gluing comes down to whether you have a nice dependable band saw (and can use it). I have a cheap one but don't trust myself to cut that close to the finished guitar body. I would rather trust a clean up router trim. But either way this is a cool project that's worth the time.

Exactly what I was looking for. I'm doing the same thing to a guitar kit, but I'm using a spalted maple top. I had the same idea as you did in the video with taking the thickness off the body and using a thicker top. I dont have a thickness planer, but I do have a router, and plan to build a sled like you used. Do you have a link for the bit you used to shave the 1/4" off the top of the body?

      ***** Yes a neck-through would be cool.
An idea; what if you took a premade neck & attached it to a piece of similar maple board, then sanded it into a neck-through shape? Add wings afterwards...
When you trust yourself to do a homemade neck-through, maybe give the sandwich idea a shot? The layered mahogany/walnut/maple Gibson uses in Firebirds? That'd be quite a piece of engineering!

    Hey,
I get excited with every new video you put up on building guitars!
With arising interest in your videos I also thought about trying to build some electric guitars by myself but I need some help for the start I think. =D
Which tools do you think are essential for guitar projects like yours?
As I am new to woodworking I don't know much about what tools I can use for what purposes and yet I am still a student and have a budget so it's not in my interest to buy too many tools just for ease of work. But if there aren't many neccessary tools, which I then probably could buy used, I might have the chance to get hands on building guitars myself.
    =D

I think your videos are pretty cool but there's just a lot wrong with how you did this. The point of book matching is so you can get matching grain patterns on either side of the body but the cut you made with the table saw was nowhere near close to thin enough(but you did get lucky to get pretty close on the match the way you did it) . Still like your videos tho 😊

You sure know how to make things difficult for yourself. I would have just put the body backside to the blade on the table saw and just took off what you needed from that. Would have cut your work time and efforts in half. Remember, measure twice, cut once.

@@roberthelmick9574 - Its clear to be from your comments that you need a hobby. Might I suggest one like stamp collecting,or mountain climbing or video games because you clearly have way too much time on your hands if you have the time to make such a comment on a video that I didn't even make.
      You have a nice day,now.

I personally would never use my table saw to make that cut. The odds for potential blade drift are too high... even at 1%. The last thing you want at this point of a project is to make a cut that screws your whole project. Running the maple top through is understandable. You still will be working with factory flat sides and thickness planing. Mahogany is much denser and harder and you don't want to make a double cut (that won't even meet). I think he made the right decision. Woodworking is all about patience and taking the extra time to make sure your project is perfect. If you might do it differently, good for you. But his results speak for himself. It turned out beautiful. So he did it right.

The quilting is in the wood naturally. You can't make regular maple become quilted. I've seen some techniques to try to imitate it but its not the same.
