I built mine in a SmartiPi Pro screen case and put a digital output HAT on the Pi, so I get optical out to my audio system - completely pristine digital data. I use PiCorePlayer because it fits into my little "home ecosystem".
That sounds like a fun build!
I was watching because I've been kinda looking into stuff like this, but that joke at 7:11 earned my like :)
Have you had issues with Volumio? Is it any more atable? I gave up on my Intel NUC style pc an Zen stream units due to all the drop-outs, reboots and connection issues. I love the idea of RPi and a better clock, I2S etc but Volumio was utter frustration. Great Video BTW. 😊
I haven't dug into what is available in the Plex api, but I could see using one of these as an alarm clock / plex base station on my night table. Nice clean build!
That's a great idea!
Love the idea, but run from Plex: they have been systematically nerfing local media in favour of content that’s media-giant-friendly. There is no indication that they will ever go back to putting user’s media first.

@mykandrew can we use any other display you would suggest. Just got a pi 5
Hi, I would very much appreciate if you could advise what are the extra command lines needed . In your video you mentioned hdmi drive must be set to 1, but the last line show hdmi_drive=2.. ? Pleass kindly advise, many thanks in advance.
Good stuff Michael. I wish I knew what you were talking about. LOL I have a Wiim Mini Streamer and Amazon Music. The Wiim is plugged into a Schiit Modi 3+ and a 1983 Harman Kardon PM-650 amp from 1983. I'm really happy with it. The amp has been with me since new and it still sounds great.
My biggest complaint about current-gen music streaming is how hard it is to plug things in to existing amps. Glad you made it happen and rocking a great-sounding system!
Hi Michael, did you have to do anything special to get the touchscreen working? I've installed the plugin (3.3.7) on Volumio 3.569. The srceen works, but not the touchsceen part....
This is an amazing form factor. Thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome!
Tinkering with Raspberry Pi's is always fun. Great video.
I love it!
Have an issue with Volumio, only a part of the albums are displays. The source is a DLNA server on a NAS (minimserver). Tested several versions always the same issue. When using 3th party app it all albums are displayed…
Hi ! Thanks for your insights !
I've just found out Pi5 can receive daughter cards for adding NVMe discs through PCIE3. Have you tried it with such build ?
I'm looking for a huge jukebox for my car player and that could do better than any ready made solution.
would be nice to see a Pi 5 streamer with a better touch screen and an M2 Ssd for storing music locally
I wonder if I would not replace my laptop with a a rasp or my armlogic android box
Used iPad 7th gen in perfect condition, $175... ARMed and ready....
Mr Mike I too am a PI lover but!!!
But a new easier more reliable build is the B-Max with x86 Volumio flasd built-in SSD+ music on USB 3 or network and its easy to make a 12 volt linear power supply al can connect to that screen
1. The bios give better thermal management.
2. Faster reliable boots consistently.
3. Lower current draw 2_amps
But I will try the PI5 because of better thermals in documentation.
( Sound Quality is equal to the PI had previous advantage SQ when you could connect it to low noise power)
I want to try this!!!
Oooo I just looked up B-Max and very interesting. Which one are you using exactly? This sounds like such a flexible x86 dream machine on such low power draw
@@wipopsuppipat4442 Bmax B1 Pro or Plus I've used both Amazon
Do you know if the screen will work with a Raspberry PI and a DAC hat?
I don’t see why not, the GPIO is open
Seems everytime you poke your screen hard it goes on strike, and a soft poke makes it go back to work.
May I suggest the name the Em-Pi-Tree
Excellent vidéo!! But I think that Volumio does not support Amazon music??
It doesn’t yet. Hopefully someday soon!
What about Deezer? Also, could i run Plexamp on this rig?
I'm curious to what kind of audio quality you can get with this? Like, can it play at least hi-res audio?
Put a digital output card on the Pi, like a Hifiberry Digi2 Pro, and it just transmits digital data to a DAC or a receiver, anything with digital input. Perfect audio, basically. The Pi does nothing more than send the data from point A to point B.
Using a USB out it will transmit whatever file in whatever quality it’s playing at. At this point it depends on the DAC you’re using. Most will suggest a dac hat that sits on top of the pi. I always like an external dac personally.
@@KimmoJaskari @mykandrew thank you both for the responses. I do have a couple of dac/amps that I could attach to it. But after rewatching this video, the instability troubles me.
Can use you flac or alac on like
Can this be used a screen for the regular Pi OS desktop?
yes, it can.
Michael, do you have a link to that screen on Amazon?
It’s in the description
So a DAC doesn’t need to be attached via USB or the pins?
Not if you use the on board speakers, which I don’t recommend lol
Great except it’s a maintenance nightmare and there’s no software on the pi that works with Apple Music. I gave up on dead end solutions like Slim and Plex a long time ago. Managing a local library just takes way too much time - and I did it for 20 years
You can just pay for Roon, if you like to keep a personal music collection, which I do. I've been too cheap to pay for it though, I use Logitech Media Server for my audio. It's not that high maintenance, I just rip the audio off a CD, and it collects the metadata basically then and there. It's a hobby. But with Roon you get a lot done for you and you get a lot more information about the media.
@@KimmoJaskari Slim *IS* Logitech Media Server. I was using that from the early 2000's until about 2016. I don't have time to manage my music collection any more, so the expense of a streaming service is well worth it to me. I can't be bothered with any player or player UI that doesn't support the service I use.
Wow that touch screens sensitivity is amazing 🙄
I thought so
Is it possible for this streamer to stream dsd512 and be controlled by a phone app?!?!
Hey, how may i get in touch with you.
Would appreciate and feel grateful to maybe have a discussion about building a solution for Wi-Fi streamers having optical out, 3.5 MM jacks, and an HDMI arc for old speakers that can be converted or utilise in a centralised home system. This is a problem that I have been trying to solve, and I did not find anything under US$120 to fix this challenge. In India, this seems to be a major challenge or a problem that can be solved. Do let me know how may I reach out to you.
You said it before: "when it works". I tried various pi projects and they are great when they work but you can go back to them next day and something isnt working and you spend hours longer fixing them. Waste of time and money for most use cases.
It’s garbage man
I’m there with you, just buy a Wiim
But how to make volumio more secure guys, someone will control it if they have its ip
I’ll look into this
What about DST music? RPi 4 power can be insufficient.
😉
This is trash, you need a digital out hat for the pi to make this a decent streamer.
Volumio sucks. Everyone knows it.
Just buy a android tablet, pi great as appliance and awful for everything else
No thanks
@@davidmaddon554I was thinking about getting either a tablet or a touch screen laptop to store all my music.
What makes you say no? I'd like to hear your opinion on which would be best and why.
@@bit1345if you go the tablet route, I would recommend to buy an old iPad as new cheaper Android tablets are very slow. The Laptop method is not bad either but you have to make sure that there no ground interference (noise through the speakers). Also for someone who is not as tech savvy, it's much easier to get and setup a table or a laptop for music streaming. Also get a good audio player software with playlist functionality and maybe even remote control
I think this is a very stupid idea. We have better computers for music playback. Using a low powered computer for music streaming is something a mobile device can easily do, far more efficiently.
Yeah but can you afford it?
@@markussmith5818 let me guess a mobile device costs around 80 to 100 dollars the same amount a raspberry pi costs
