You just made me nostalgic for my modded Squeezebox Touch. Great little gadget and my first proper streamer.
Gone up in the world now with an Aries G2 feeding a Terminator Plus but, as they say, you never forget your first, especially the excitement of having all the music all the time at the touch of a screen.

I built something similar and used a HiFiberry hat with this case. I did have to modify the case slightly to allow the coax out to fit the case. I’m also using a usb splitter with one power supply for the screen and the RPi. It’s a pretty cool setup.

Great video John, Smart pi touch pro case, allo Digi one hat, with a standard pi 4 power supply works great. The case comes with a splitter. I never get a low power and one cord. Dead silent with ropieee and controlled with roodial and a PC.

To reduce the number of power cables, use the jumper cables with the display. Use a power supply that provides atleast 3amps 5v on the usb C and the power low message will go away.

Really cool video, thanks. One thing you may find interesting is you can now change the pi to boot from usb instead of sd card. You can then us either a usb stick or a microsd card with a USB adapter and it save you having to take it apart if you need to change the OS.

i built something very similar about 5 years ago with a hifiberry dac+ lite (it had to be a lite because the non lite version uses i2c and clashes with the screen. i only used 1 power supply, a 5.5v 6a power brick w/leads soldered directly to the gpio. it powers all units flawlessly without the current limiting of the poly fuse. running osmc/kodi with a custom skin/build.i also had to flip the screen and touch interface 180 degrees but it had to be done in the boot config file. main use is for pandora and internet radio and streaming from my own media server while working in the shop. very reliable unit.

    Nice.
I packaged up my Squeezebox Touch and put it back in the box after replacing it on my bedside table with a touchscreen & pi & dac hat, because they were more stable and capable than the squeezebox. I tried volumio, but switched to PiCore player after not being able to get volumio to access files on the LMS server in the basement. I always suspected that volumio could read an LMS server elsewhere on the network, but could never find out how to make it work (there's lots of info on making the volumio be an LMS server, I could not find any for volumio as an LMS client).

When Volumio incorporated Tidal Connect last year I got an Allo Usbridge. After some ups and downs the most recent versions of Volumio allow my phone Tidal app to control my streaming perfectly. I don't know if it would even be possible to add a screen to a Usbridge Signature, but my phone basically does the same in the palm of my hand.

Another great video. I had an original Squeezebox. It died. Miss it. I eventually, with the help of my geeky son in law, moved to Pi's, first with Volumio but eventually went to Diet Pi, using the Logitech Media Software. I added Qobuz. I've had an Allo USBridge for several years, running everything, but at my age of 66, I've been thinking of simplifying and throwing out my preamp, streamer, DAC etc for an NAD C658. I also really want to try Dirac, and this looks like an easy way. But, still, here's another great option, and I'm sure I could even throw Diet PI with LMS and Qobuz in it, and truck on down the road. I had been thinking of going back to a stock Pi. Gives me pause. It's a great time to be into audio. Except for the delays. 😉

Can this be used to select music, or do you still need another device for that? Personally, I'd vastly prefer a dedicated touch device to select and control Roon vs. my phone (or desktop, etc). They're cheap enough that I could attach them to most of my end points which would allow other folks in the house to select/play music.

It's all so convoluted. I stream tidal from my phone via a node 2i and that crashes/fails to connect/gets stuck regularly. I imagine this setup Darko is proposing will also fail/crash/freeze regularly........so much work and potential for frustration to simply listen to music!

Love this idea. When the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB comes down to its normal $55 USD price instead of the current $200 I'll consider building one. Curious how the USB output of a Pi 4 compares to the Lightning port of a "decent" late model Apple iPAD as you used in a previous video? Great video by the way. Loved the presentation and clear instructions. Not getting bogged down installing all those additional jumper wires in order to power the assembly with one PSU would make it far easier and as you noted, allow it to power an external DAC.

Volumio is a nice polished OS for the Pi, but I really don't like the subscription model for what is essentially a pretty UI.
I have a pi which is running Spotify connect, MPD, Airplay 2, Tidal Connect (MQA) and a few other functions. It's headless (so no screen).
It's not quite as plug and play as Volumio, but all of the features that Volumio lock behind a premium subscription fee are readily available for the pi to install for free.

Great video. Funny you should hark back to the Squeezebox Touch.... the technology is not quite dead yet! As someone who upgraded to an Innuos server/streamer I can still use my Touch for Now Playing (for music stored locally) and navigation, much like the Pi-Fi, and also use an IR remote. (I'm not sure if this would work as well, or at all, if the Innuos were configured as a Roon Core; or if it may also work with other server/streamers.)

Speaking of hat based players, is it possible to get a screen to a player like Allo Boss2 Player or Allo Katana Player by using the micro HDMI port on the RPI? thanks.

    • @oldgit4285
      @oldgit4285 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not 100% certain but think hdmi might not work for touchscreens, I.e.you could output signal to the display but not receive touch commands back to the RPI.
Not helped that the PIs ribbon connector for screens (used to/still?) only work for the official Raspberry screen, crazy IMO. So with dac hats using key pins getting aftermarket screens attached/connected was a challenge I had - solution for me was RpI3 + IQuadio dac hat + DFRobot USB 2.8" touchscreen (ironically I rarely control the unit via the screen). The screen sends/receives signals and takes it's power via one USB cable to the RPI. This was set up in 2018 so options may have changed since then but my set up is still running today using LMS, Jivelite and Squeezer for multi-room music via main hifi and 2 Logitech SqueezeBox players. Jivelite I tweaked as std coding didn't cater for 2.8" screen

Hey....what about PiCore player and Logitech Media Server.... They are Free and better. Also snakeoil server with Logitech Media sever is the best sounding server solution.

Thanks John, enjoy your videos a lot. Can anyone speak to using Apple Music hi-res with this or a similar software on pi? I’ve built a retropie so shouldn’t all that different, I just don’t know what OS would do the trick.
