So it comes down to good planning, including backup strategies, as it should do with any decision in life. Thanks Andy. All the best, to you and yours, for 2018.
Great Video. This also highlights that by having to drive slower and having to take regular longer stops it will make driving safer IMHO. Wishing you and yours a very happy Christmas. I hope you have a peaceful & prosperous New Year. Best wish from the McBeardface clan 🖖
Your videos are always good to watch (on my husband's subscription I've realised). We collected our "new" first Nissan Leaf from the Orkney ferry in Aberdeen on Friday to bring home to Edinburgh. (Your journey was a treat for a Gainsborough girl.) It is wonderful to have an EV at last.
Thanks for the video, it was especially useful to me re zapmap, I'd been on site before but didn't realize how versatile it is. Hopefully getting my first EV in March (if Renault don't delay it anymore!!). Keep up the good work. Happy New Year.
Merry Christmas to you and family, Hope you have a good one and a Happy New Year. And thanks for your time you make for these videos, Especially the bad driver ones on your other channel, Being a local i feel your pain.
Another great video. Thanks, I live in southend, did a trip to Maidenhead. In a 24kw leaf. Never again. I will wait for the new 40kw leaf. No problems with that.yes the reversing camera is rubbish in the wet. Rather have beppers
I really like your vids. Thanks for doing them. My neighbour recently installed 20 panels on his roof, and bought an electric Ioniq. I'll do the same when my lottery ticket wins.
Great video it's just what I do when planning a journey to an unknown address anywhere in the UK from orkney or Leicestershire to deliver an EV. I too plan a earlier rapid charge if needed and also great to see you too using JUST B MODE for existing the motorway or when trying to loose speed. See the friction brakes as throwing away energy that could be harvested into miles ! Great video 😉
Thanks helpful having got my Leaf 2.Zero on reserve for Feb/Mar delivery. I delayed getting EV until I could get more than the 30kWh as I live in Basildon and want to visit my family nr Wigan to your long range trip example v. relevant. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do the trip with only 1, not 2 charging stops.
This is useful even for the Tesla drivers amongst us. I have a 2 week old P100D and suffice to say a heavy right foot at the moment so I have to charge A LOT. In Ireland we only have three superchargers so I rely on the public infrastructure which at the moment is still free for 22KW and Fast DC (no complaints there). Planning a trip from Dublin to Valencia in June so I'm looking forward to that, not a lot of superchargers in Spain so I'm looking into the equivalent of Ecotricity over there, whatever that is. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy your video's and insight!
Thanks Andy, anther great video. I live in Sussex and my son lives just down the road from you on the Lancs border. Thanks to your video, I'm gonna be brave and go electric not diesel next time I go North. Have a good Christmas.
Great video but I think I still would have gone for the nearer charging post. If there's anything wrong with the farther charging post (not working, occupied, ice'd) you have no options. At least with the nearer one, options are available. I guess it'll depend on how risk averse you are!! Merry Christmas!
I believe the Zap-Map app lets you click to navigate with Google Maps. My Toyota reversing camera is pretty useless in rain too. That’s why I paid to have sensors added too. Thanks, very helpful.
If you put the Zap Map app on your phone you can plan it the same but also click navigate to open Google Maps on your phone. Didn't notice the slider for distance from your route - very handy. Reaching chargers is one thing - finding out if they are working or busy is another - I got my car 2 days ago 24kwh and drove to 3 different chargers in an area I didn't know to try to find one. In the end I got a few rapids and was fine but I have to say - that was not the relaxing experience I was hoping for! I also use Eco D and do some slipstreaming - also use B to slow down coming to a stop or off motorway - hopefully I am doing it right!
Good video, I was just looking at plugshare to plan a trip from mine to Chester Zoo which i hope to film for my Channel shortly. Shame Nissan/Renault havn't thought about building this into the Sat Nav, or allowing you to send the route from your mobile to your Sat Nav.
Great video thanks. I noted that you achieved 5.5 miles per KWh on your trip and was wondering what range of miles per KWh you have experience with your leaf and what impact outside temperature has.
Hi. Please, can you remind me? when I had a Leaf from Milton Keyens EV Experience. using the cruise or speed limiter, lessened the range, which is it? Plus Seasonal Greeting. I thought that anyone looking on youtube would find this video very helpful. well done for keeping it straight forward.
I'm not sure that as much time as you think is lost. When driving at a fixed speed, say 60 MPH. You do less breaking and lane swapping. I _always_ set my cruise control to 60 and pootle along whilst other cars whiz past me at 80. The thing is I often see them many miles later.
The speed limiter is pretty useful in speed check areas I agree, adaptive cruise control would be nicer though. I find a tad under 60 mph is the fastest way to travel in the Zoe for a long journey given the charging time. If it isn't too cold 190 miles is possible on a charge on the motorway. I m guessing you went fairly slowly so Zoe may well manage over 200 miles at that speed. I wonder if battery upgrades will be available for older cars as the tech improves because other parts of the car barely wear out.
Hi andy hope you and the family are having a great Christmas, got an issue regarding the delivery of the 2.Zero leaf :( (I'll upload a video today or tomorrow regarding this issue) our council's, local boroughs and city centre councils like TFL in London are limiting the amount of tint on privacy glass. Our local area I work in has a 50% maximum limit, I have called Nissan UK and my local dealership to find out what is the tint level on the 2.Zero and other trims which haven't been released (here in the UK) but I have translated the French Nissan 2018 leaf and only the vista and acenta have normal tinted glass all around. I will be transferring my deposit to the acenta and will explain in my vlog why this trim is better suited to our taxi industry (also more importantly the lower trim levels come with the 16in rims and much cheaper tyres when they need replacing) cheers
Thanks. that was helpful. I will be ordering an Ioniq full electric in the new year. I should take delivery 2 to 3 months into 2018. Merry Christmas from Northern Ontario Canada present temperature -13 deg. C ... forecast overnight low -25 deg C (ouch!)
I did wonder about the "Issues reported" thing, but don't Ecotricity et al clear these when they fix them or put a comment in from an engineer, that would be useful !!
Sorry for two posts. It is worth pointing out that day to day an EV is way more convenient than a petrol or diesel car as well as costing next to nothing to charge. I never have to make special trips to petrol stations and just plug in at home when my car needs it (generally keep it close to 80% just in case). I have only used a public charger once in nine months of EV ownership and that in includes several 100-160 mile round trips.
I'm interested to know just how many companies operate charge points and the ways you pay to use them. Do you need hundreds of different accounts and cards / apps ? It would be great if you did a video about that. Cheers.
Ecotricity app and Polar card (sub) does most. Zapmap will tell you which points are looked after by which company so can plan accordingly. 3-4 apps pretty much cover everything.
Great video (as usual) and Seasons Greetings from New Zealand. FYI I was born in Yorkshire and enjoy your videos, very informative. I know you have an order for a Tesla Model 3, would you now consider a new 40 Kwh Leaf?
When I use zapmap, I don't get the slider for 'show chargers within x miles of route'. Have they removed the facility from the website or do I need to change a setting?
Electric Vehicle Man yeah, I get the route finder and I enter start and end points, I just don't get the 'show chargers within x miles of the route' slider.
Thanks, ELM. I get that if one were to slow down more than necessary the regen is much less than the power needed to get back up to speed. However, if I wanted to slow from 65 to 60 because of traffic conditions where's the harm in using B to do so? I'm not arguing, just trying to understand.
Bet that costly on that trip how many chargers did u use and how high was temperature guess need a credit card with loads of cash in it as debt card would run out quicker
Great video and some good tips in here... I always use Zap Map on my planned long journeys and do similar planning - it is a faff, but actually quite enjoyable if the drive is a leisure one without strict arrival time requirements etc... Although I must admit many of my savings have been spent on the motorway services food and coffee due to my lack of discipline! With my 24kw LEAF I have to be more careful with planning and personally I may favour services that has multiple chargers over some that have just 1 - but reliability has improved and the 'pumps' do seem a lot quieter these days due to the charging to charge changes a while back... Something I would add though which again is probably more relevant for the shorter range EV's is to bare in mind terrain... This has nearly caught me out a few times as 10 miles of steady uphill will kill that range... For example we did the leg between Penrith Reged Centre to Scotch Corner on the A66 a nice easy 51 mile leg... But of course there was a lot of uphill and 25 miles in I had about 40% left! Of course I knew the road and knew that there was a lot of downhill to follow with plenty of regen so arrived with quite a lot to spare - but it was a lesson in keeping hills in mind when planning... On the subject of EV road trips we had a great time around Scotland where the CYC rapids are AFAIK still free to use if you are a CYC member... Would also definitely concur on the speed limiter - it is the best thing ever (I never use the cruise mode).
Hi ELM, what an excellent video !!! From one Yorkie to another, thank you for showing peeps how range anxiety is not the huge issue they believe it to be. I'm on the point of buying an EV, I live permanently in France and the front runners being a new 40KW Leaf or a Renault Zoe. Any suggestions/observations. Should I buy or wait for a genuine 200+ mile range battery ?
I'll probably wait for 40KWh Zoe below £10k :) Just the other day I had to drive at 50-55mph because car following me had no satnav and had some issues accelerating. Never ever again :)
It's much simpler with my Volt. Local driving is mostly electric even with my Gen 1 and long trips are as easy as with an ICE car. No figuring out charging strategies,
It will drop to -34 deg. C for the overnight low on Tuesday. I will order my Hyundai Ioniq with the cold weather battery heat maintenance system. Check out a 7 year old Leaf in Alberta Canada. th-cam.com/video/EKxCpuVWFaw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/tP_oTFwrhHk/w-d-xo.html
Good video as always. As an old git I now know that the 30 kwh Leaf fits almost exactly with my bladder range!
So it comes down to good planning, including backup strategies, as it should do with any decision in life. Thanks Andy. All the best, to you and yours, for 2018.

There are 2 points there that are working (checked app) so not a huge risk.

The infrastructure in my country Scotland is also getting better love the videos.
Thanks for this. Very good practical advice.

You can send the route using Nissans connect website to the car.

Cruise is a bit thick. Use the limiter.
Great video mate. Keep it up in 2018. Merry Christmas.

Just need to remember that if your on the motorway services are based approximately 30 miles apart, makes it easier.
At 8:25 you pass the junction sign for my area lol
Get the kettle on next time and have the smell of a nice pie. That should guarantee he stops by for a chat! :-D

How about doing one 2021-style? A lot has changed in 4 years.
I'm interested to know just how many companies operate charge points and the ways you pay to use them. Do you need hundreds of different accounts and cards / apps ?

Click on route finder.
Electric Vehicle Man yeah, I get the route finder and I enter start and end points, I just don't get the 'show chargers within x miles of the route' slider.
Can you expand on the point about D vs B on motorways, what's the downside of B?
If you lift off you’ll lose momentum much quicker and you’ll use way more getting back up to speed than regen will ever give you.
Thanks, ELM. I get that if one were to slow down more than necessary the regen is much less than the power needed to get back up to speed. However, if I wanted to slow from 65 to 60 because of traffic conditions where's the harm in using B to do so? I'm not arguing, just trying to understand.
None at all, it’s just harder to control than standard eco, less leeway. Any significant slowdown I use b mode by flicking in and out of it.
Bet that costly on that trip how many chargers did u use and how high was temperature guess need a credit card with loads of cash in it as debt card would run out quicker
Sorry I don't understand what you're asking? All the costs were in the video.
Electric Vehicle Man I’m confused .com my self
I’m wondering, now that you have a Tesla Model 3, has your route planning process changed?
Yes. I get in the car and set the satnav. That’s it.
@@ElectricVehicleMan Yeah, same here. :)

I’d go for a 2 year deal (PCP) that’s cheap if poss and then change for a Tesla M3 or other EV which all seeem to be coming out in 2019/20.
I'll probably wait for 40KWh Zoe below £10k :) Just the other day I had to drive at 50-55mph because car following me had no satnav and had some issues accelerating. Never ever again :)
Great vid
are you still enjoying looking for points to charge yr car or is it loosing its fun now
phillip elliott 98% of my charging is at home whilst I sleep so yes. £250 cost for 20,000 miles! So yes, I’m enjoying that part.
It's much simpler with my Volt. Local driving is mostly electric even with my Gen 1 and long trips are as easy as with an ICE car. No figuring out charging strategies,
Great vid, but what a faff eh? You'd think there would be one website that could do what requires two.
You have also a better route planner for electric cars
Mmmm. Savings? You bought a cou0le of rounds of food😂👍
Merry Christmas electric leaf Man I hope you have been a good boy this year so that Santa can empty his huge sack at your house today yo ho ho
It will drop to -34 deg. C for the overnight low on Tuesday.
I will order my Hyundai Ioniq with the cold weather battery heat maintenance system.
